Centro phone as modem

I keep getting error # 678 when trying to connect to the internet using my new centro. I have no clue what to do. Any suggestions?
Post relates to: Centro (Sprint)

After 3 agonizing calls to tech support and explaining what I wanted THREE TIMES (almost as hard as getting a PRL update ;-), I finally got a guru on the phone who knew within 5 seconds of talking to me what the other 2 didn't...my GRANDFATHERED vision plan wasn't compatible with PAM (palm as modem).
With a quick change in vision plan (didn't touch my calling plan at all!), and the addition of PAM, I was up and running.  If this helps, review your plan overview online.  If you're using an older vision plan instead of the SIMPLY Everything, you might need to switch to PRO PACK Vision.
Here's mine copied and pasted:
Plan add-ons for (YOUR NAME GOES HERE!)

Phone As Modem Add-On                 15.00
NIGHTS STARTING AT 6PM              10.00
I'm using the Sprint Mobile Broadband software available from Sprint.  My DUN now works with my laptop bluetooth adapter or the synch cable.
Good luck!

  • Will there be a phone as modem feature?

I can't seem to find anything about this on the news reports or official specs. At the moment, I use a phone from Verizon, and an EVDO card from Sprint for wireless broadband.
If the 3G IPhone were to provide a phone as modem feature (which all the blackberries do btw), this would bring in droves of business users.
Sure fine, there's new features to open Excel/Word documents, but I want to use my laptop when actually creating these documents. I travel a lot for work, so I'm constantly using my wireless broadband card. If I can carry just one device instead of two, that would be great. There are devices like this out there (eg the HTC), but the IPhone still has the advantage of screen size.
Personally, if I was to use just the IPhone for all my business needs, I don't really see the need to have 3G, Edge will download most email/web browsing quickly enough.

newer doesn't always mean better - totally depends on what features you're looking for - you should be able to get a good deal on an "old" iphone too with everyone rushing to get the new one & trying to recoup some of their original cost by selling their "old" one

  • Sprint's "Phone-As-Modem" and the Samsung A900M

In case you have missed it, Sprint has completely embraced the "Phone-As-Modem" concept by offering unlimited internet access via any of their EVDO/DUN phones for only $40/month. This service is a real boon to those of us wanting (or needing) unlimited internet connectivity while we are "on the road."
The only problem is that it is frequently difficult to ascertain which is the correct phone to purchase. Once purchased, it is difficult to find any documentation outlining just how to go about using the phone with your notebook computer. Since most of the phones capable of providing this connectivity are relatively new, even the Tech Support people at Sprint have little or no experience, and can provide little help.
The endeavor of this post is to point readers in the right direction, and to describe one solution that works perfectly! If you are a current subscriber to a Sprint voice plan, and are considering using their "Phone-As-Modem" plan, or if you are considering switching to Sprint for the same reason, read on...
I have been using a Samsung phone with my Sprint voice plan for a couple years, and I really liked its features. I particularly liked the software running on the phone. I had vetted the features offered by other phone manufacturers, most notably Motorola, and I always came away disappointed. So, in searching for a phone compatible with Sprint's Phone-As-Modem plan, I leaned heavily toward their offerings from Samsung. In the end, the perfect phone for my purposes was Samsung's A900M.
Unfortunately, I immediately had problems getting the phone "paired" with my Macbook Pro. As I think anyone would have done, I attempted to pair the phone via Bluetooth from my Macbook Pro. This process goes quite smoothly up to the point that the phone displays a pop-up stating that a successful connection has been made; at this point, the phone freezes, and cannot even be powered off normally. The battery must be removed from the phone in order to rectify this situation. Obviously, any services the phone might otherwise provide to the notebook computer are inaccessible during this time. I should note here that a Sprint Tech Support rep., using a Mac and the same phone, was able to duplicate this issue.
After 3 days of following false leads on this issue, I at last discovered the "trick" to making this phone work with my computer, but I can now state that it does work, and quite well! It turns out that this phone can only be paired with a Mac by using the phone to create the pairing. Additionally, the phone will normally "see" any Bluetooth connection request from the Mac as a request for modem services.
In the end, this makes the actual use of the phone as a modem much more streamlined, as you will see. What follows is explicit instruction for setting up and using Sprint's Samsung A900M for use as a modem:
    * If it is not clear to you from the above, DO NOT attempt to pair the A900M to your Mac using either Bluetooth preferences or the Bluetooth menu on your Mac. An "initial" pairing must be made from the phone.
    * On your Mac, turn on Bluetooth, and turn on "Discoverable" in the Bluetooth menu.
    * On the A900M, use the menus to select Tools>Bluetooth. This will display a list of "Trusted Devices" (which may be completely empty at this point). Choose "Options" by pressing the right "soft key," then choose "Add New" (option #1).
    * Select "Search," then press the "OK" button. Wait for your Mac to show up in the list, select it, then choose "Add to list" (left soft key). A dialogue will appear on the phone asking for a "PIN." Enter any 4-digit combination you like, then press "OK."
    * A dialogue will now appear on your Mac, asking for the same 4-digit "PIN." Enter the correct number.
A brief Bluetooth connection will be made with your Mac. Do not be alarmed if this is just a transient connection; your A900M will now have your Mac included in its list of "Trusted Devices," and it will happily accept any Bluetooth request in conjunction with a request for an internet connection. You are now ready to set up your Mac to use the phone...
    * On your Mac, open System Preferences>Network. If necessary, unlock the padlock and enter your admin password. Choose Show: Network Port Configurations, and enable (check) Bluetooth, if it is not already enabled. Drag it in the list of configurations to a location that makes sense for your setup (mine is just below “Airport”).
    * Next, choose Show: Bluetooth. Select the “Bluetooth Modem” pane. Make sure that “Show Bluetooth status in menu bar” is checked, check “Show modem staus in menu bar,” uncheck “Wait for dial tone,” then use the pull-down menu to select the “Sprint PCS Vision” modem script.
    * Select the “PPP” pane. Your phone will automatically provide any authentication credentials, so leave these fields blank. For “Telephone Number:,” enter Sprint's "DUN" number: this is #777. Leave all other settings at their default.
    * While still viewing the “PPP” pane, click the “Apply Now” button at the bottom of the window. Finally, click “Dial Now…”
An Internet Connect window should open, showing the progress of your connection attempt. Within seconds, you should be connected to the internet. While you are connected, your phone will display: “Connected as data modem to XXX,” and you will not be able to make or receive calls. You can simply quit Intenet Connect, and the connection will remain.
When you are finished with your session, simply choose “Disconnect” from the modem status menu. When you want to make another connection, turn on Bluetooth, then choose “Connect” from the Modem Status menu. It’s really that simple!! To be clear: you will not make any attempt to connect to the phone "manually" via Bluetooth when you want to use it to connect to the internet... a Bluetooth connection will be made automatically whenever you choose "Connect" from the Modem Status menu.
I hope that this post helps others that might be attempting to make a Samsung A900M work for them, or are considering doing so. I can tell you that once it is configured properly, it works amazingly well (this post was made using the A900M ;-))!

NOTE: The solution described above requires 10.4.7 or later.

    BDAqua,
I assume that you are paying $6/month for dial-up? Yes, one can use dial-up servers for any major ISP in almost any area, but this requires that one has access to a phone line. Also, it is usually possible to find "open" networks with broadband connections in most populated areas, but it is cumbersome (not to mention illegal).
What I am paying $40/month for is broadband access anywhere that I also have cell phone service. For me, this amounts to anywhere I currently am, and I have that access in seconds, without having to find a phone line, the correct dial-in number(s), etc. I don't have to connect anything to my computer; all I need do is open my MBP, log in (if necessary), select "Connect" from the modem menu, and I'm online.
For my $40/month, I'm getting the same service, and the same speeds, as someone who pays either $60/month or $80/month, depending on the presence of an accompanying voice plan; this is the industry-standard rate for use with "connection cards" (either PCMCIA or Expresscard-34).
I spend a great deal of my time on the road, and for me, the $40/month is worth it. When I am at home for extended periods of time (seasonally), I can "sleep" the service.

  • Problem when trying to sync with Palm Centro phone and Palm m500

I just purchased a Palm Centro phone and have had no problem when I try to sync the phone with the Palm software on the computer, however, my wife has an older Palm m500 and all her contacts are on her Palm, but they don't show up on the Palm Desktop software.  Is there something we're doing wrong?  All the dates show up on her desk top and everything in my phone shows up on my desktop, only her contacts are empty.
    Post relates to: Centro (Verizon)

It is likely that your wife's older device (with Legacy two-word PIMs) is incompatible with the Access Desktop/Hotsync for Verizon Centros as I believe it has only the new Extended (one-word) PIM conduits. If you are running XP you might be able to use a download of 4.1.4e. Suggest you search the Hotsync forum to see if the Centro can use this version of Hotsync (I don't have a Centro).

  • Can I use my Firefox Phone as Modem for PC?

I'm from Bangladesh. Here Firefox OS is launched in Symphony F15 phone. I want to know if I can use my phone as Modem for PC via USB or bluetooth. Have anyone any idea about this? Does firefox OS have the capability?

Firefox OS lets you share your data connection with other devices by creating a Wi-Fi hotspot or by tethering with a USB cable. Here's how:

  • 2 different Centro users-How do you sync calendar info between the 2 phones? How do you sync 2 centro phones to one computer?

My husband and I have 2 centro (AT&T) phones.  We would like to share our calendar information with each other.  He has the Palm Desktop program downloaded on his work computer.  He is using the Outlook calendar at work.  We would also like to download the Palm program downloaded on our home computer.  But we weren't sure if 2 different users can access it, etc.  How do we do it correctly?  Do we have to use one username for both Palm Desktop?  Does the computer recognize the 2 phones?  How do we transfer information between the 2 phones?  We do not have a data plan.  We would like to use the USB cable to avoid data charges.  Also, if his centro takes calendar/contacts from Outlook at work, do we have to do the same at home?  Can the Centro sync with both Palm Desktop calendar and Outlook calendar at the same time?
    Thanks very much.
    Post relates to: Centro (AT&T)

Yes he can sync it with palm desktop at home.  But if you want to share calendar and use different usernames, then you cannot do it with palm desktop but you can if you use outlook.

  • Communication with mobile phone's modem

    Dear All,
I have a work in which i need to send and receive SMS from a desktop app. I have seen that smart phone has built-in GSM modem so i am thinking to utilize a mobile phone instead of purchasing standalone GSM modem.
I looked into google a lot and found few examples on the net especially on the codeproject.com where the authors shown how we can send SMS from a modem or mobile phone (for example: http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/38705/Send-and-Read-SMS-through-a-GSM-Modem-using-AT-Com). I have downloaded and tried few of the programs but nothing worked. In all of the programs one thing is common that they are using Serial ports for communication while i am connecting my mobile to pc with a USB port. I am not sure is there any way i can do it in java or i can virtually convert my USB port to com port.
Any help and suggestions will be appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Umer

I have AT&T, and I know that they prohibit modem tethering (what you're referring to) with standard data plans. I have a $20/month unlimited data plan but if I use it tethered to my computer, they may cancel my service because I broke the contract. You can do it anyway, however, but in very small amounts. It is possible for them to track this, but if you only use it sparingly, then they either won't notice or won't care. Alternatively, you could buy the $60/month data tethering plan, which would function exactly the same, except it would be legal.
Most, if not all, wireless providers have the same policy. That's why they'll never help you with this.
If you want to do this anyway, I recommend a Sony Ericsson W600. I've been using this phone for a long time, and it's fantastic. It doesn't have 3G though. Google for "osx modem drivers" or something like that to find more info. All these drivers have been written by some nice hacker, and some work better than others, so if this is your only consideration in buying a new phone, try to find which drivers work best.

  • Moving from dead WinXP to Working Vista with Centro Phone and Palm Access

About six months ago I upgraded my Verizon phone to a Palm Centro and moved all my files from my old T|X to the new phone with no problems. The Palm Desktop "Access" was on my older computer running WinXP Pro. A week ago that computer died although I had backups of both the Documents and Program Files folders. I have installed the Verizon Palm Access software on my new computer which is running Vista Home Premium as a Administrator. When I try to Hot Sync the process hangs part way through update of the calendar. I followed the pattern given on the posting elsewhere on this forum of copying the Palm OS from the My Documents and Program Files on the backup to the new computer in their respective locations. Specifically when I click on "Details" in the Hot Sync box the first "Date Book" entry and then hangs about 30% of the way through the second one.
I hope someone can help me  so I can begin to hot sync again and thus print out a calendar.

    Post relates to: Palm VIIx

Hi..  Welcome to the Palm forums.  With it hanging during the sync indicates that the current palm desktop /  hotsync mgr sees some of your data on the centro as being corrupted.  The first thing you need to do is turn off calendar and contact conduits, right click on the hotsync icon by your clock on the computer then go to either custom or setting-applications.  Select calendar (datebook) go to change or configure and select do nothing and put a check in set as default and then ok or done.  Do the same for contacts (addressbook) and then sync.  If all syncs successfully one of those two are the problem.  Now you need a utility to clean up the date called dbfixit.  It is a free utility that will need to be found thru a google search and downloaded to your computer.  It will be in a .zip format so extract it and once you have the dbfixit.prc file double click on it which puts it into the installer and sync to install.  Then go to the device and run it.  The free version will check for errors and let you know where they are and you will have to manually fix or delete the problems.  If you spend the 12.95 to register it, it will find the errors and fix them as well.  If you decide to register it they tell you that you will receive a email with the registration code in 24-48 hrs.  Once the problems have all been found and fixed and you can run dbfixit and not find any errors, go back to those conduits and select one of them and put it on synchronize and check set as default then sync when successful go in and add the other conduit and sync.  This should fix the problem for you.

  • N95 FW upgrade using phone as modem.

    Hi!
I have 2MB data plan, and i'm using my n95 to connect my laptop to Internet. Now, if i want to upgrade my phones firmware, is it possible/safe to do it with this connection?
I think the update reboots the phone etc. which will ofcourse kill the connection. Is this a problem?

Be safe, use a cabled network connection to do the ugrade if you have access to one.
As far as I know, the NSU downloads the firmware to the PC, and then installs it to the phone without any network connection being required.
The problem may be that the mode that the phone and PC are connected in, i.e. as a modem, may confuse the installation process.
I know it aint heavy, but you don't want to turn it into a paper weight!!
Some things in life are guaranteed, but can you claim on them?

  • How to use cell phone as modem

I have a 3G enabled cell phone (Nokia E71) that I use as modem with my windows laptop
    - connects via USB
How can I do the same with my MacBook Air ?
    - have tried to connect, but nothing seems to be happening / detected

IF there are any drivers for your cellphones, they would be available through your cellphone manufacturer, or through 3rd party programmers who program for your cellphone and have written a Mac interface. Apple does not support it from their end --

  • Can't Access My Own Website when using TMobile phone as Modem

I am using my Nokia 5310 as a bluetooth modem through TMobile on my MacBook. When I try to access my own website, it redirects me to a address that says, "Great Success! Apache is working on your website..." and so on. However, when I disconnect the modem and use my airport bluetooth connection I can get to my site immediately. I've tried rebooting my MacBook, pulling the battery out of the phone, refreshing the browser, emptying the cache, all to no avail. I called Tmobile and got their "Tier 3" people who said it's not from their side but could not give me any real reason it's doing this. They reconfigured my settings to see if that would work but it didn't.
I can access all other sites but my own website. I tried Firefox and got the same conclusion.
If it's the computer why would I be able to get to my site when I use my airport? If it's the phone, why would I be able to access the site through the web browser on my phone?
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to correct this problem? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi halacious, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Airport & Bluetooth are two separate Interfaces, so that is a bit confusing.
Where is this Website hosted? Locally on your own machine, or on the Internet?
    Any Router involved there?

  • Tether MBP to Win Mobile Phone as Modem

Has anyone successfully tethered a Windows Mobile phone as a modem?

I do not have internet access setup on my phone. can
i still use the phone (via bluebooth) to dial my ISP?
for example...i would dial a number say 888.555.1212
with my user name and password configured in the
    bluetooth setting?
Yes that is possible if your phone can act as a modem (non-GPRS) though note that your speed will be 9.6Kbps which is really sssslllllooowww.
Probably okay for plain text e-mail from my experience and just not viable for web browsing.
the link you gave me talks about GPRS for phone that
has internet access, but i do not have that.

  • Powering off the Centro Phone

I am a new user to the Centro. I understand that I can shut the phone off, but the power is still on to use the Calendar, Contacts, etc.
But I wish to turn the WHOLE unit off to save the battery. I've looked in the manual and maybe I just missed that step.I
I'm finding that I'm constantly needing to charge up the phone battery.
I know this is pretty basic and the answer is pretty simple but it has escape my searching around.

You didn't miss anything - there is no way to completely turn off a PalmOS device.   This is by design.
To make your battery last the longest, turn off Beam Receive, BlueTooth (if not needed), and lower your screen brightness.
Check to make sure there isn't an email program that is polling home every 5 minutes.  This is one of the biggest wasters of battery charge.
