Certain clips freeze in iMovie project

PLEASE PLEASE HELP
I am putting together a project in imovie and certain clips (the same ones each time) intermittently freeze when played back in the timeline but are fine if played back from within the event. The same clips also freeze if the project is uploaded to the Theatre.
The clips were filmed on a Flip mino HD and are .mp4 files. I have made projects before mixing both Flip and GoPro footage with no problems.
I have tried trashing the iMovie preference files but this has had no effect.
iMac (27-inch, Late 2012)
3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB
1.85TB Free Space on Hard Drive

OK
Part 1:
Then we know that the problem is in the video material You want to use.
- Note the name for each video clip You want too use
- Locate them
- Open one at a time in QuickTime-Player
- In QT-P press cmd+I (Command-key and I-key) / Open Inspector
Now read :
Movie formatted (CODEC) : nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Frames per second : YY.yy per sec
Note this to each clip.
What does they read ?
So we find out howto convert them into a CODEC iMovie can use (YES QuickTime and VLC-player - can open many more CODECs than iMovie and iDVD can use.
Part 2:
Free Space on Start-up Hard Disk.
- When Your Mac starts-up it reads Mac OS from one hard disk (most often one has just one - Named Macintosh HD) and this You see as an icon up to the right hand corner of You screen (If not set to invisible) - open this by double clicking - or press cmd+F and a window oopens then in the frame of this most often bottom but can be top frame band  - it reads - XX.xx Gb free space.
What does it say ?
Good Luck.

  • What is the best technique for "ripping" a commercial DVD and inserting this clip in my IMovie project (macbook Pro)?

How can i "rip" a part of a DVD that i bought from a vendor, when I went scuba diving recently?  My goal is to insert the  scuba  clip into my Imovie project, which I am developing in my Macbook Pro.     (This Mac is about 3 yearsold now)
I ,of course, will give credit to the company that produced the scuba DVD.
I read the posts, and Appleman1958, vernon Alexander, and Samhaque have had experience with this issue.
Which solution  do you recommend for me?  My ultimate goal is to create a DVD that includes snippets of a family trip.
thank you for your input here.
    Moshe Pipick

Let's assume that such a 'holiday video' does not have copy protection:
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Problem with importing a clip from another iMovie project

    Hello
I want to import a clip from one iMovie project to another iMovie project.
Both projects are in 16:9, but when I import a clip it's no longer in 16:9.
The clip is croped and I have a black bar on the right and left side.
How can I solve this ?

Have you tried Copying the clip in Project A and Pasting it into Project B?
When you Copy and Paste clips, try to Copy and Paste all at the same time. More here:

  • Trim a .mov clip without creating iMovie project

I would like to trim a video clip that I have in iMovie and iPhoto.  I just want to shorten the file and save it.  I do not want to make it into a iMovie project.  I know this can be done on iPhone.  Can it be done in iMovie or Iphoto or by some other simple free software?
I am running iMovie 10.0 and iPhoto 9.5 on a iMac with Mavericks.

There is free software called MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 that will do this.
I think you can also do this in QuickTime Player X, but I have not tried it myself.

  • How can I incorporate several video and audio clips into one iMovie project?

Hello all.  Basically, I'm trying to solve a problem before it becomes one.  I'm going to put together a short iMovie project for a thank-you dinner.  Several people from out-of-town will not be able to make the dinner.  I want to give them the opportunity to "speak" by having them put together a short video or audio clip.  I then need to gather up all the clips and put them together in one iMovie project.  I guess I'm looking for some assistance in terms of format, what types of files/formats to use, etc.  I've done a few movies (mainly from still pictures -- glorified slideshows with music).  But, I'm still a relative neophyte when it comes to the computer world.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  (feel free to point to a "How to " tutorial if there's a good one out there).
    Thanks.

your problem will not be the process of 'glueing stuff together'
    follow advice given here
    http://www.apple.com/support/imovie/
under 'Getting started' or follow the 'Video' tutorials ...
the real task is, to make all clips readable for usage in iM ...
before making you a technician on video-codecs:
download and install the free tools Mpeg Streamclip and Perian.org
you have to relaunch your Mac after doing so...-
BEFORE adding any of your external sources into an Event, use Streamclip to manually convert to DV, or if source is HDef, to Quicktime/Appleintermediate.
the resulting files should import flawless into iM, proceed as usual.
iM 'swallows' a lot of formats, so it could be this manual conversion isn't needed ...
don't hesitate to come back here, if probs occur ...

  • Copying SELECT PORTIONS of longer clip to another iMovie project.

I recorded a play last night.
I'm making a montage. Let's say I want a four or five second clip from a 42 minute long video. I split the clip so it is autonomous, copy it, and paste it into the new project, but iMovie copies the ENTIRE video...leaving me with a lot less hard drive space and unneeded files.
How do I just get that TINY bit into the new project?

One way is to export the 5 second clip to your desktop as a Full Quality Quicktime Movie (File/Export/Full Quality), then drag that movie into your iMovie project in place of the 5 second clip, then delete the old 5 second clip.

  • Problems with sound clips after conv. iMovie project via mediabrow. to iDVD

I have made a 30 min long project with 80 small video clips. The project is alright when viewing it in iMovie, but after I have prepared via the mediabrowser and thenaften view the project in iDVD - every other sound clips is without sound and on some video clips it mixes some soundtracks from other tracks into it. Any ideas, I'm getting very frustrated
    Thanks in advance

I'm having the same problem. Everything plays beautifully in Imovie and then when its shared with idvd or media browser it all goes weird. I get sound from footage that I either haven't used at all or audio that I have detached and deleted playing over the top of other bits, or sound going out of sync.
All my video footage was shot with 12 bit audio. For most of the footage that I've used, I've detached and deleted the original audio and put other tracks over the top, the footage that still has it's original audio, I've converted so it has 16 bit audio. I hoped that would solve the problem but my newest version of the video seems to be worse than before.
Everything plays fine in imovie and then warps when it's shared.
Any ideas would be greatly received as I am going crazy and wasting a heck of a lot of time that I don't really have!!!

  • Importing clips from iMovie project (they keep ending up in the trash)

I have never tried to import other clips from another iMovie project before and I just tried it yesterday. This is what I did:
-I went into the other project and clicked on each individual clip from that project that I wanted (one at a time).
-I copied that clip and then saved it to the desktop
-From there I copied those clips to my external drive (which holds the new project that I am working on
-I then opened up the new project in iMovie
    -I went to File<Import
-I selected the clips that I had copied over to the external drive
    -I imported them
-They all showed up fine, they played fine and I was able to edit them and put them into the time line as well
The problem I face though is after I save the project and exit, the next time I open the project, each of those clips are missing and have been placed in the trash
    What am I doing wrong?
Thanks ahead of time for your help!

It sounds like something may be preventing iMovie from properly saving the project on the external drive. The drive format may be wrong, or third-party software might be causing conflicts. More here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1852869#1852869
Another possibility is that you are opening the wrong project file saved inside the iMovie 5 project. If your project was originally an iMovie 4 project converted to iMovie 5 that's an easy mistake to make. More here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=1971832
Note that the copy/export/import routine you used can be simplified enormously. iMovie 5 lets us Copy and Paste clips much more simply. To copy clips from Project A to Project B, open Project A, select all the clips you want copied to Project B, choose Edit > Copy, open Project B, move the playhead where you want to place the clips, and Paste. iMovie will import all the files that support those clips from Project A to Project B. Note that it imports the entire file for the clip, not just the clip itself. That's so the clip inherits all the non-destructive editing features it had in Project A.
To avoid Project B becoming unnecessarily large, it's important to Copy and Paste all the clips you want together. If you copy two clips at the same time that share the same file iMovie imports their source file just one time. But if you Copy and Paste two clips that share the same source file separately, iMovie imports the same file twice.

  • New iMovie project problems

I've been trying to copy and paste clips from an iMovie project into a new project, but at some point in the pasting process, the little rainbow wheel pops up and begins spinning and everything just stops. So I have to force quit the program, except it won't force quit and I have to restart the iMac. I have several projects from which I'd like to extract clips to form a whole new project, but I'm frustrated as to how to go about it. Any thoughts?

Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but longer in Leopard.
    Background information here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
    and here:

An article on troubleshooting Permissions can be found here:

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • Problems pasting clips into another imovie

I am trying to paste a clip from one imovie project to another. I copy the clip from project A, open project B, and hit the paste command. I get the importing files box and the preparing message, but it takes forever and I am just trying to import a 6 second clip. If I force quit imovie, when I reopen it, it has placed a 9.24 GB file in the trash of the project B, called clip01_1. This is not what I copied or tried to paste. Why does it do this? What needs to be done to correct this situation? I have tried pasting with no clips in the timeline, several clips in the timeline, one clip in the timeline. I have successfully moved clips in the past, but I can't do it now!

    Thanks. Your description helps.
I converted and imported dozens of analog video tapes
into iMovie. They contain various events in a
disorganized manner, as I would leave the same tape
in and just keep recording different events, until it
was full. My goal was to open each imported "tape"
in iMovie, edit and sort out the clips, name them,
and place them in various folders on my desktop.
If the suggestions made in a moment don't work, please answer these questions to make sure I "get it"...
    1. Each imported analog tape arrived in one very long clip, right? And you want to split up that clip into several smaller clips, and keep just some of those clips?
    ---Keep and name accordingly, yes.
    2. Will you have gazillions of small clips in the project, or just a few? (If there are many, many clips you need some sort of automatic method for handling the clips. If there are only a few, a manual method will work.)
--Many clips. I will put this in caps just to emphasize my goal. It will be a common theme throughout. I JUST WANT TO SAVE INDIVIDUAL CLIPS TO A FOLDER ON MY DESKTOP.
    3. Are all the tapes in one iMovie project or did you import each tape to its own project?
--Each tape is in its own project. and there are numerous clips of my dog (as an example) spread over all the tapes. This is why I JUST WANT TO SAVE INDIVIDUAL CLIPS TO A FOLDER ON MY DESKTOP.
    4. Do you have QuickTime Pro? If not, are you willing to buy it? ($30 from Apple.)
---I would rather not add yet another layer of convoluted nonsense and expense to this situation, if I can help it. What will QTP do that QT 7.03 can't?
    5. Is it crucial that you end up with one file for each clip, or is a collection of topic-related clips sharing the same iMovie project sufficient?
---1 file for each clip is necessary. As an example, on 1 analog imported tape, I may have video of my dog, video of a friends BBQ and a fishing trip. Within each "theme" (BBQ, fishing trip etc..) , I may want to split up the video of my dog into various clips and name them accordingly. Such as "dog chasing ball", "dog swimming". The friends BBQ might have clips such as "friend puking", "friend stepping in puke", "friend putting cheese on burger" etc... On my Desktop I would have folders called "Dog", "BBQ", "Fishing" etc.. As I go through each project, I would extract and name all clips and either "share, export, massage, excise, resect, snip, cut, paste, incise, remove, chop, crop, trim etc..." or whatever magic word it takes to get that F^&%ing clip, AS NAMED, into a folder on the desktop that I choose. This, I was silly enough to think, could be done with a simple "Save As"/Desktop/<Folder> command. So, after wasting my money on iLife '05 which is supposed to "simplify my digital life", I now need to find some way to engage in a frustrating game of software masturbation, and possibly, additional cost, to accomplish this otherwise simple and benign task. How might I proceed?
Basically my destop folder structure should end up looking like this.
    DOG STUFF FOLDER
    dog running clip
    swimming
    dog chasing ball clip
    playing with frisbee
    in car
    playing guitar
    VACATIONS FOLDER
    FISHING
    big fish
    small fish
    stupid fish
    MEXICO
    drinking tequila
    drinking more tequila
    falling down
    getting up
    ....and so forth
Now, all I would have to do is import DOG STUFF FOLDER clips into a project called DOG PROJECT. Then, go to VACATIONS FOLDER and import FISHING and MEXICO into their own, or the same, iMovie projects, depending on space. Etc...
Here's the big problem: unlike digital video, analog video may not have a timecode. Without a timecode, iMovie can't separate it into clips when you import it to a project. As important here, you can't define the clips, export the project to the camera, then re-import it without losing the clip separations.
--Not my goal anyway to re-import anything to tape. I don't mind large 40 minute clips, as long as I can break them up as I see fit. And.. SAVE INDIVIDUAL CLIPS TO A FOLDER ON MY DESKTOP.
If it's okay to lose your clip separations, then that's an easy solution. Split the large clip into smaller ones, discard the clips you don't want to keep, export to the camera, then re-import to a new project. Discard the old project. The new project will contain only the video you want to keep.
---I could do the same with a VHS deck and my camcorder. So, what do I need iMovie for? Again, not my goal. I just want to SAVE INDIVIDUAL CLIPS TO A FOLDER ON MY DESKTOP.
Instead of exporting to the camera you could export to a Full Quality DV QuickTime movie that you either store on the hard disk or import to a new imovie project.
--This doesn't work well if I want to first parse all my clips from all my tapes that contain my dog in them and then import them all into a new project all at once. Or am I missing something?
There is a way to convert each (split) clip into its own Media file. When you apply a special effect to any clip iMovie creates a new file containing just the special-effected clip. If doesn't matter what the effect is. So, try this: Select a clip, activate the Effects tab, configure a Sharpen filter with the minimum sharpening, then Apply. Double-click on the sharpened clip and note it now has its own file. When you Copy and Paste that clip THAT's what gets copied, not its original source file.
---Ok..but I don't want effects on the clip. I just want to SAVE INDIVIDUAL CLIPS, AS IS, TO A FOLDER ON MY DESKTOP
You can apply a special effect to all the clips in the whole project at the same time. Drag all the original clips to the Clips pane. Option-drag each back to the timeline, which copies it (without duplicating its source file.) Split the timeline clip as you like. Discard the parts you don't want to keep. The timeline now contains all the clips you want to keep.
Select All the clips and apply the minimum Sharpen filter to all together. Wait. Rendering will take a while. Save. Now Copy and Paste the clips to whichever projects you want. A single file will arrive with each Pasted clip. Or you can drag them to Finder folders.
--Precisely.. This is another form of wasted time, effort and software masturbation that I was describing. I do not want to sit for hours while my clips render, just to accomplish something else that had nothing to do with applying effects to the clips in the first place. Once I have all the raw clips in a project, I plan on giving them to a professional video person to make a video. That's why, ALL I WANT TO DO IS SAVE INDIVIDUAL CLIPS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE FOLDERS ON THE DESKTOP.
Karl, I do appreciate your help and my tone has nothing to do with you. I'm just hoping you might be able to help me. I'm just steaming out of my ears that I gave up the PC world to use Macs precisely for the very reason of getting away from all this crap of doing a million stupid things to accomplish a goal. It's like scratching my right ear with my left foot. If I wanted to do that, I would stick with a PC!! At least, this way, I can be just as frustrated for a lot cheaper.
(Be sure to pretest this method to make sure the video you create with the special effect is okay. If a DVD is your goal, burn a DVD of the special-effected clips. You want to make sure the special effect doesn't change the appearance of the clip.)

  • IMovie Project losing audio & freezing video

About 2 weeks ago I created an iMovie Project with clips imported from a Sony Handycam HDR-CX500V. Everything worked like a charm and I even shared it via my MobileMe account. Just yesterday I tried to view the project again in iMovie and after several minutes it comes to a transition and as the cursor passes to the next clip the sounds stops and the video freezes, but the cursor keeps moving through the various clips. The MobileMe version is fine. I even went back and recovered the original version of the project from Time Machine for the day I uploaded to MobileMe and the same problem exists. So it seems to be the app and not the project, any ideas what is happening?

    Hi Heather,
Sorry to hear you are having problems with iMovie. I generally don't have any issues with it (touch wood).
Have you tried removing any transitions that may be causing the problem. I'm assuming that you are seeing the same issues as the original poster. If that helps, try introducing different transitions until you come across any that cause the freezing problem.
Try setting up a new user account and running your project under that user. User accounts can sometimes become corrupted, just like preference files. To set up a new user, go to System Preferences (should be in your Dock) and select Accounts (under the System heading).
Also, you may have something installed that is in conflict with iMovie - it could be in your Macintosh HD>Library>QuickTime folder. Look for items like Perian, Flip4Mac or DivX on your system. Sometimes 3rd party components/add-ons/plug-ins for QuickTime can cause issues. But I'm no expert in this area!
Are you using an external hard drive to store your Events and/or Projects? If so, this must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). To check the format, in Finder right-click (Control-click) on the hard drive's name, then select Get Info. In the window that opens you will see "Format" listed. If you need to reformat (using Disk Utility) be sure to back-up the disk first, as reformatting will erase the drive's contents.
Give these things a try Heather. Let us know how it goes.

  • I can't get clips from one imovie 4 project to another.

Why can't I have two imovie project open at once? I have an imovie that I want to copy some clips from and when I open another imovie, the original close so I can't drag them in. I also cannot copy a clip and then paste it into another imovie.
According to the imovie help I should be able to have up to 10 imovie projects open at one time. I cannot get two.
    Help????

That is the expected behaviour for iMovie 4. In iMovie 6 you can do what you want. (I don't remember if you can do it in iMovie 5.)

  • To save hard drive space, can I put my iMovie projects and clips on an external drive?

to save hard drive space, can I put my iMovie projects and clips on an external drive?

    Yes.
To preserve your projects, all moves should be done from within iMovie, (not the Finder).
First, the external drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). FAT32 will not work. You can reformat using Disk Utility if you need to.
When importing video from your camera, you can specify your external drive as the target on the import screen.
For existing projects, you should move using these instructions.
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#move7d66613
There is an error in the instructions where it says to drag the project icon to the icon in the Event Library. You should instead look for your hard drive icon in the Project Library.
You can move events using these instructions.
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3ac6d42c
If you want to move Events, and copy photos, copy music, etc for editing on another Mac, you should use the FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA feature after moving the Project as above.

  • After updating imovie with mavericks, clips added to a project no longer have an orange stripe. Any suggestions?

When I add clips to a project in imovie, the used portions no longer have an orange stripe on them. I recently installed mavericks and updated imovie. I could not find a setting to enable or view this feature. Thanks for any suggestions.

After using imovie some more after the update,  it may have to do with the location of clips and the project.  If the imovie project and the clip are saved in the same imovie library, the orange stripe appears when I add clips to a project.  If the movie project and the clip are not in the same imovie library, the orange stripe does not seem to show up. To make sure I can alway see the orange stripe for clips I have added to a project, I keep the clip and project in the same library. Hope this helps.
