Certain Keys are not working. Have tried everything!

Hi, I was hoping I could get some help with this issue that I've had for a long time now. My "x", "s", "w" and "2" keys have not worked for the longest time now. I have an HP Probook 4510s.
Things I've tried:
- I've tried reinstalling the drivers multiple times.
- Have tried the power off and holding the power button trick multiple times.
- Have replaced the keyboard and the same exact keys do not function on any keyboard.
- Have cleaned the keys as well as the inside of the computer multiple times.
- Have reinstalled windows twice.
Nothing works! I have to keep using the on-screen keyboard to use these keys but it's an inconvenience especially when I'm trying to type up reports and other homework. Can anyone shine some light on this please? Thank you in advance.

Hi,
Sounds like a hardware problem because those keys are on the same line. My suggestion: bring it to an authorized repairer to have a check.
Regards.

  • Certain keys are not working

    Hi there -
After hearing a repeating noise when opening some applications (can hit ESC to stop) I noticed a change in my keyboard.  One letter key does not work anymore, and I get a strange window showing different letters.  It looks like a different language.  I went back into system preferences, and verified I have English/US selected.  One person I asked said they thought I hit the option, command or control key and brought up a different keyboard.  Any idea on how to get things back to normal?

I'm not sure how to see if a have a "stuck" key...
Maybe that's why I'm hearing that sound sometimes.
    Here's the weird window:

  • Page Up and Down keys won't work - have tried everything

My Page Up and Down keys won't work. I've tried hitting F7, the Fn key, checked that the "Always use cursor keys to navigate" box is not selected in the Advanced Options tab and made sure that the "Use autoscrolling" tab is selected. I tried uninstalling and re-installing Firefox, tried hitting buttons F1 through to F12 and then checked that accessibility.warn_on_browsewithcaret is set to 'true'.
It also won't work in Internet Explorer - I have no idea what else to try. My Up/Down arrows are working, just not the Page Up/Page Down buttons. Please help, this is driving me nuts. It's only just started happening; I've never had a problem with it before!

What is the value of the pref [http://kb.mozillazine.org/accessibility.browsewithcaret accessibility.browsewithcaret] on the about:config page?
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Satellite C850D - keys are not working when trying to log into laptop

First I would like to say sorry for my lack of computer knowledge. My C850D is only 2 months old, last night it was working perfectly... this morning when I turn it on to type in my password not all the keys would work.
I got a little angry and just reset the laptop. Still not working and even after that.... any advise to why my keypads no longer works.

    >My C850D is only 2 months old,
I guess you have an hardware problem.
    Looks like keyboard malfunction.
The warranty should be valid if the notebook is only 2 month old
Therefore get in contact with Toshiba authorized service available in your country to get this issue fixed under warranty conditions usually the unit should be fixed free of charge.

    Hi,
Try using Recovery Manager to reinstall your original AMD graphics driver - the procedure for using recovery manager to reinstall Software and Drivers is detailed in the relevant document on the link below.
    Recovery Manager - Windows 8.
    Recovery Manager - Windows 7
After the reinstallation has completed, restart the notebook.

I have the macBookPro and the problem is the mouse pad does not work I tried everything but still does not work what should i do ?
so i'm using the usb mouse

I want to clarify the issue.
The issue is with the MBP trackpad, and it works fine with an attached USB mouse.
With some ingenuity, you might be able to fix this yourself, but I suggest visiting your local Apple Store/Genius Bar. Some have fixed this issue and have posted their results online, but the Apple Store should be your first destination.

  • Function keys are not working correctly

I've been looking all over the various threads and I can't find an answer that solves my problem.
    Here are the details:
I bought the computer in the U.S. where I live.
I have a iMac 2.4GHz intel Core 2 Duo  EMC 2133 with a 20" screen. Bought it new in February 2008.
I have Mac OS X 10.5.8  (I am waiting for my order for OS Snow Leopard to come in!!)
I have been using a wireless mouse and Keyboard (Love not having cords!)
Recently, my wireless keyboard got a short and quit working. I went down to the apple store and got a new wireless keyboard.
I had the computer with me at the genius bar so, yes, the apple employee saw exactly what I have.
I took it all home got the thing all put back together and got the new keyboard paired up and working with the computer.
    Here are the problems:
Went to go use the function keys while using iTunes and found they weren't working properly. The F10, F11 and F12 do not control the volume of sound as the keyboard indicates they would, they instead activate dashboard, spaces, and application windows.
Following the advice of other threads, I looked over in the system preferences and made sure the "Use all F1, F2 etc." box was unchecked (it was unchecked), things still didn't work.
I tried the fn key but it appears to not work at all it has no effect on the functioning of the function keys.
I went under keyboard shortcuts in system preferences and found the F10, F11 and F12 keys, it confirms that those keys control spaces, dashboard and application windows as they are performing but shows no options to either reassign to volume control (as marked on the keyboard) or make the fn key work.
I've gone back and forth trying various combinations of checked and unchecked boxes to see if anything would work, so far I've come up with nothing.
A couple more important or interesting facts:
Yes I have turned off and taken the batteries out of the old keyboard. My bluetooth connection currently shows it as disconnected.
    I have restarted the computer.
One thing I find odd; when I go under preferences and go to Keyboard and Mouse when I go under the section "Bluetooth" it shows Bluetooth mouse with the name of the mouse and the battery level. BUT nothing is showing up under bluetooth Keyboard, I can't figure out how to change this and don't know if it is contributing to the problem.
When I go under the bluetooth logo on the top bar I find the mouse and both keyboards referenced, the old keyboard is shown as disconnected and the other two are connected. I have tried to update the device's name but it doesn't seem to let me.
I have double clicked on the device under bluetooth and it shows the new keyboard as discoverable, paired and connected. Hence, I am using the new keyboard to write this inquiry.
Please, any assistance would be of great help. I have tried to be thorough in order help narrow the possible problem. Thanks!!

Just thought I'd let you know.  Our suspicions were correct, it was the OS. After I installed Snow Leopard (10.6.8) all the problems were corrected.  I also updated the RAM from 1 gb to 6 gb. The mac is working all around better. Sorry it took so long to get back to everyone. My superdrive had pooped out. Rather than replace it I got an external drive from OWC connected with firewire 800.  So far everything is running very well, as far as I can tell this external drive is better than the original superdrive. My superdrive has always acted funny, infact I returned the first mac I got after a week because its superdrive was also malfunctioning. Anyway, all that to say everything seems to be fully functioning again.

  • Keys are not working

my keys on my mac book pro are not working properly.  the shift and control keys are not working and do not show up in the viewer.
any helpful hints on how to get them working?

seems like various different keyboard issues, requiring different solutions.
however, for what it is worth, I DID resolve a related issue. In my case, the problem was definitely SOFTWARE related. "s" key stopped working, as well as a couple of keys on "number pad", including "enter" key, etc.
when i did time machine backup and transferred to new computer, i found that the "s" key (and others) STILL NOT WORKING on new computer!
i should also note that, before the transfer, i had also tried different keyboards on old computer and had same problem: no "s" key, etc.
this made me think problem had to do with that old computer, since same problem with different keyboards. but, after problem remained after transfer, it was pretty obvious that I had transferred the problem to the new computer, which made me conclude the problem was SOFTWARE and NOT HARDWARE.
well, first thing i always try (as IT guy) is to set up and test new Apple user account. when i set up a new test account (administrator; not standard or guest, etc.), I noticed that the "s" key was WORKING (and I assume others - new keyboard was NOT extended; so no number pad to test those keys). When I logged back into the old account, once again, the "s" key not working.
i duplicated all of this testing on the new computer; so THE PROBLEM WAS DEFINITELY A SOFTWARE PROBLEM WITH THAT PARTICULAR USER ACCOUNT. I guess somehow an ACCOUNT can be specifically affected (corrupted) in some way that other accounts are NOT so affected.
Doubt if this would apply in case of UNRESPONSIVE KEYBOARD (which seems to usually be HARDWARE related); but in the case where only SELECTED KEYS are not working, you might want to simply try setting up a NEW USER ACCOUNT.
Unfortunately, Apple has NO easy way to transfer files between accounts. But, of course, I would likely NOT want to do that anyway, in this case, as I might end up transferring software problem to the new account. Therefore I DID have a bit of work to do, in terms of tranferring PICTURES and MUSIC to the new account from the old, etc. But that seemed minor compared to working on a computer with certain keys not functioning!

  • Some Keys are not working on Lenovo G570

    Hello all
I am new here, looking for some help regarding my Lenovo G570.
Yesterday, it was working perfectly, I properly shut is down. I have set a BIOS pasword.
Today, when I switch it on, I was unable to type the pasword becasu some keys were not working. However, I managed to loged in with the help of On Screen Keyboard. After analysing it, I came to know that some keys on numpad includeing 0,2 and on the 2nd line(vertical numerical keys) 1,2,3,4,7,8,9,0 are not working. I tried to re-install the OS but I set a BIOS paswoed containing one of the missing keys.
Please let me know whether it is a software problem or should i take my laptop to some repairing shop?
    Thanks

If the external keyboard works fine and if the keypad is not working then it’s a issue with the keypad of the laptop.

    Hi,
While this could be a hardware issue, it's always worth trying the following.
Open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager, expand Keyboards, right click the entry 'Standard PS/2 Keyboard' and select Uninstall.
    Shutdown the notebook.
Then unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.

  • My arrow keys are not working inside flash games

    Hello,
Whenever I play any flash game, my arrow keys are not working. They work perfectly fine when I am scrolling the site with them, but not in flash games.
I am using Google Chrome, flash player version 10,3,181,36 and my operating system is Win7 64 bit.
    Solutions I've already tried:
    Use another webbrowser
    Re-install Flash player
    Restart PC
    Try another keyboard
I have this problem ever since the last Flash Player update.

    Hey there Questionair1.
It sounds like your arrow keys are not working correctly. I would start with these steps from the following article named:
OS X Mavericks: If keys on your keyboard don’t work
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13809
You may have accidentally set an option that changes how your keyboard operates.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Dictation & Speech, then click “Text to Speech.” If “Speak selected text when the key is pressed” is selected, deselect it or click Change Key to select another key.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Accessibility, then click Keyboard. Make sure Slow Keys is turned off. If Slow Keys is on, you must hold down a key longer than usual before it’s recognized.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

Before anything else, I would attempt cleaning the keyboard. For more information on how to clean a notebook keyboard, please reference this guide: How to Clean a Laptop Keyboard
