Certain KMS clients won't activate
Hello,
I work at a Community College where we have somewhere around 400 computers throughout the building. Up until this summer, we have been using MAK keys for our activation. However, to make our image deployment process easier, we have just deployed a KMS server
to handle our activation.
Our labs are slowly replaced over time, so pretty much each computer lab has PCs that were purchased in different years. I mention this because all of our newer batches of PCs have been activating just fine using KMS, but one style of PC which is a little
older fails while using slmgr /ato with no specific error. It just says
failed with an error, or something like that. No error codes or descriptive message. I also see no errors in the event viewer.
Our KMS server is running 2008 R2 Enterprise with a KMS host key. I know this is the right key as like I said, our newer PCs are activating just fine. I'll post a screen capture of the /dli output on our KMS server once
my account on here will let me. The current count is at 50 (the max it will display), it's status is licensed, and it's using a VOLUME_KMS_R2_B_channel key.
Our Clients are all Windows 7 Professional, and I am using one of the
generic KMS Windows 7 Pro keys with the slmgr /ipk command on those. Again, I know that's right because most of our PCs activated with it just fine. However, when running slmgr /ato on the failing clients I get that generic error.
Now our PCs are created via an image deployment, but I made sure to use the
/generalize option for sysprep. I have also verified that all other PCs created by this image have unique CMIDs or whatever the term is. I have even done a
fresh install from a CD on the PCs in question with the same result.
I have made sure windows firewall is off on these PCs, I moved one physical PC to a different area in our network to rule out some kind of network trouble, and verified several times that
DNS is hosting the KMS properly using nslookup.
We are all at a loss here, and I would appreciate any advice or suggestions on what else might be going on here.
Hello,
As I said in my original post, the PC I am currently testing is a fresh install from a CD in order to rule out any duplicate CMIDs. I am also able to telnet to the KMS server from the machine n question over port 1688. Just to rule it out,
I manually set the KMS server using slmgr /skms <hostname>:<port>. I still get the same error.
As for events 12288 and 12289, there are none under the application logs. The only event I see is under Applications and Services Logs > Key Management Services,
12290 which has a response of 0x0, indicating the request was successful. Still getting the error.
I have also determined that it is one specific set of hardware that is having the issue. We have around 60 of these PCs all the same model and they are the only ones having this error. And as I said in my first post, these boxes are spread
across almost our entire network, and I have verified that other PCs in the same subnets work just fine.

Windos 2008 KMS host can't activate Windows 8 clients
Hi, I have a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 working as a KMS Host, i can activate Windows 7, Office 2010 and Office 2013 without problems, but, when I try to activate Windows 8 clients an error is showed: 0XC004F042, this same error code us registered in the service
log of the KMS Host.
Thanks in advanced for your helpThis error almost always means that the KMSclient has successfully contacted a valid KMShost, but, the KMShost does not have the required KMShost productkey installed (e.g. a Windows8 KMSclient contacted a KMShost, but that KMshost doesn't have the needed
update/patch/productkeys installed).

Here's a wiki article I threw together:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/22510.volume-activation-kms-mak-adba-avma.aspx
Are you trying to activate Win8.0 or Win8.1?
(the required update/patch/productkey, is different...)

Certain web sites won't load on any browser on Macbook Pro
Starting yesterday certain web sites won't load on any browser (Safari or Chrome). These include sites like the New England Journal of Medicine, Washington Post, and English Bulldog News. I get an error message in Safari that the server took too long to respond and in Chrome I get a connection timeout error message. I updated Adobe Flash with a clean install as I was unable to update using the standard method due to connection timeout. That restored my access to YouTube video but today it takes ~2 minutes to load a YT video. Web sites are loading fine on my phone and household PCs.
Not sure if it is notable that my internet loading capacity has been very slow for some time. I worked with the internet company to increase the network speed but my computer has not seen benefit. No problems on the PCs in our house but my Macbook very frequently gets partially "kicked-off" the network as indicated by yellow lights seen next to the "internet" and "server" items in my Network Diagnostics utility.
I looked at old threads and ran EtreCheck (see results copied below) as was recommended to another user several months ago, but would appreciate any thoughts about where to go from here. Could it be malware? Or just a classic case of operator error? Here are the EtreCheck "red" items extracted from the full report below:

Can i Host the KMS Server in the Server which is a KMS client of other KMS Server
Hi,
Is it Possiblei can Host the KMS Server in the Server(2012 R2) which is a KMS client of other KMS Server..?
If yes ... Do i need to do any special configuration for that or normal Host configuration is enough..?
Thanks
Balaji KHi Sir,
"The KMS service does not require a dedicated server. The KMS service can be co-hosted with other services, such as Active Directory® Domain Services (AD DS) domain controllers and read-only domain controllers (RODCs).
KMS hosts can also run on physical computers or virtual machines that are running any supported Windows operating system, including Windows Server 2003. Although a KMS host that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 can activate any Windows operating
system that supports Volume Activation, a KMS host that is running Windows 7 can activate only computers running Windows 7 and Windows Vista."
Based on this ,it should work .
If you want to activate a windows server please enable KMS on a server .
"By default, client computers connect to the KMS host for activation by using anonymous RPCs through TCP port 1688. (You can change the default port.) After establishing a TCP session with the KMS host, the client sends a single request packet.
The KMS host responds with the activation count. If the count meets or exceeds the activation threshold for that operating system, the client is activated and the session is closed. The KMS client uses this same process for renewal requests. The communication
each way is 250 bytes."
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff793434.aspx
Also you can change it if that port is used by other service :

Cannot install KMS key in VAMT for KMS clients
Dear Sir / Madam,
I have some technical problems about setup the KMS host and KMS clients.
OS of the KMS host: Windows Server 2012 Standard
OS of the KMS client: Windows 7 Professional (32bit)
Question 1:
I want to use KMS host server to handle KMS keys and activations for KMS clients. Which type of KMS key need to install in KMS host ?
Would I need to install Windows 7 Professional KMS key or
Windows Server 2012 Standard KMS key in the Volume Activation Management Tool (VAMT) ?
Question 2:
I found that I cannot installed the Windows 7 Professional KMS key in the Volume Activation Management Tool (VAMT), it pop-up an error message said that the KMS key invalid. How can I fix the problem?
Thanks for your help!Hi Siu Wai,
You can also follow these steps:
1. Select a computer that you want to be your KMS host:
2. Install Windows Server.
3. At cmd prompt type the following:
Slmgr.vbs /ipk <your KMS KEY from MVLS>
The /ipk installs your MVLS key. Note if you need to change your key. For example change from a KMS_B to KMS_C key you must restart the Software Licensing service.
4. At cmd prompt type the following:
Slmgr.vbs /ato
The /ato activates the KMS host with Microsoft. You must activate the KMS host.
5. Restart the Software Licensing service.
6. Install the KMS client computers by using volume license media. You should not be prompted for cdkey during installation
7. By default these KMS client computers will query DNS and locate your KMS host and activate
KMS Client Setup Keys
To reset computers to be KMS clients type the following at elevated command prompt:
Slmgr.vbs /ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx
Where xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx is the generic VL key from the following link.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee355153.aspx#EFAA
Refer to:
Is it possibile to host multiple KMS Keys
on a single KMS server?
If there is anything else regarding this issue, please feel free to post back.
Best Regards,
Anna Wang

KMS client activation failed, but got server response?
I've been using KMS for several years. Generally there are no problems with KMS, but I have a single machine that is refusing to activate, and I cannot determine why. I've been doing extensive web searching but I'm not finding anything useful.
Windows 7 Pro client is using the Windows 7 Pro KMS client key GPDD4 as usual.
KMS Server is in Windows 2008 R2
The event log says the client is getting a response from KMS server (see below).

Windows 7 Pro was installed on this machine using Microsoft's volume activation media, and is a standard image applied via Windows Deployment Services to some 200 other computers with no problems.
We also use a variety of surplus/off-lease machines, usually Dell brand, never with any activation problems. It's a Dell Inspiron desktop. Apparently a "for the home" system? Yet it was bought with Win 7 Pro OEM installed, and so I had hoped I could roll it into the KMS easily. Tried updating the BIOS but still acts the same.
How can a "home edition" BIOS that's incompatible with KMS come with Win 7 Pro OEM?
Oddly, we have several Dell XPS systems that are using KMS just fine. Those are almost exclusively marketed as "power gamer" systems for home use. I should see if there's some way to figure out which specific Dell products do this so they can be avoided.
Fortunately it seems Windows 7 Pro edition software does not care if I use the OEM key from the sticker, so I typed that in and it activated.
(Great, one weird machine that has to be treated specially from everything else we've got.)
Probably a question for Dell to answer. For whatever reason, Dell have not performed all the necessary OEM Activation (OA) configuration tasks on this machine, perhaps due to their manufacturing/marketing strategy for this model, or perhaps due to a defective
configuration pass in the factory. Perhaps the mainboard in this machine was repaired or replaced at some stage, and wasn't correctly re-configured. Only Dell can resolve the missing marker, since it requires OEM tools.
Activating using the COA sticker product key, doesn't depend on the marker being present.

I am having trouble with iMessage being activated. It has worked up until yesterday and now won't activate and is saying no address in the send and receive section. My number is there but not ticked. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I have shut down my phone, but still no luck!
iMessage and FaceTime went down yesterday for some people. Mine is still down. My iMessage is saying the same thing about being activated. Sounds like you are still down too. Ignore the status page that says everything is fine - it lies.

My iMessage won't activate my email but will with phone number. I type my password and it says it's wrong I change it and it still says its wrong. I even made a new account and it still says the password is wrong.
Hi hectorness12!
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities! I have found an article that can help you with troubleshooting your iMessage issue. The article can be found here:

Re: Does reset all content and settings automatically sets Find my iphone off?
Jan 27, 2014 8:54 AM (in response to KiltedTim)
But when i sign in my icloud account on the activation lock, it still won't accept it. Even if i tried resetting my password. I believe that i use the right icloud account but still it won't activate it. I tried locating my device on find my iphone and the device was not there, does it mean my device has already been erased?(i resetted all content and settings) but why does it still have an activation lock after reset? Tried everything but still no luck :( reset apple id or password but still nothing :( -
After upgrading to a new 3GS, my original iPhone won't activate...
After I upgraded to an iPhone 3GS, I restored the original iPhone with iTunes. Now, the iPhone says it's got an invalid SIM in it, and when I plug it into iTunes, it won't activate it. It's basically a brick now.
Was I wrong in thinking I could now use the old iPhone basically like an iPod touch?I haven't seen any press release that supercedes that, but the one you reference refers to the ORIGINAL iPhone, not a 3G. There have been posts here and elsewhere indicating that the restore/upgrade function no longer works on the 3G once you update to 3GS.
I suppose the original poster can put a phone call in to AppleCare to see if they might be able to get some help from them. I didn't make this rule, I am just reporting what everyone else is seeing, with or without the SIM card in the 3G. -
Can no longer open two Firefox tabs at the same time. Will disappear from screen but won't close - have to go to Task Bar/ Processes to close it, some links won't activate on websites. As suggested in the support area I have gone through the process of backing up my profile, deleted existing profile, removed firefox from computer, reinstalled profile in fresh folder, reinstalled firefox 6. I have done this twice for no effect - may work as it used to for a while (30mins) then gets back to its old tricks.
It is a bit irritating.Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:
* [http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/default.aspx Microsoft Safety Scanner]
* [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware]
* [http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208283363 TDSSKiller - AntiRootkit Utility]
* [http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro/ Hitman Pro]
* [http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/ ESET Online Scanner]
[http://windows.microsoft.com/MSE Microsoft Security Essentials] is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.
Further information can be found in the [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]] article.

About two weeks ago, my iPad Air was spontaneously signed out of Messages and FaceTime when I was using it to browse the web while on the bus, connected via Personal Hotspot on my iPhone. Since then, I haven’t been able to sign in to either Messages or FaceTime. I can still sign in to my iCloud account as normal for other things like contact and bookmark syncing. It’s just Messages and FaceTime that refuse to activate.
The error messages I receive vary between the following:
“An error occurred during activation. Try again."
“Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again."
“Verification failed - The connection to iCloud timed out."
“Unable to contact the iMessage server. Try again."
This iPad Air is a replacement from Apple (quite possibly a refurbished one) that I received in November 2014, after the previous model developed a malfunctioning touchscreen in one corner. It’s worth mentioning that my iPhone and Mac are completely unaffected by any issues, and can also be signed in and out of Messages and FaceTime without a hitch.
I’ve tried an awful lot of things in an attempt to get Messages and FaceTime to sign in successfully on the iPad Air, none of which have worked, and many of which I have tried multiple times.[1]
Things I have tried in an attempt to activate Messages and FaceTime
connecting to different wifi in multiple locations (work and home) and Personal Hotspot from iPhone
signing into Messages and FaceTime with different Apple IDs (these won’t activate Messages and FaceTime either)
wiping iPad with normal restore
wiping iPad with DFU restore
resetting network settings (both after fresh install and after backup restore)
restoring from an October 2014 backup (still have to sign into Messages and FaceTime, still don’t work)
turning off the automatic timezone setting and setting the date and time manually, even though it was correct anyway
deselecting phone number and @me.com so purely using @icloud.com to sign in
running the activation process through VPN connections via London and New York
changing DNS on wifi to 8.8.8.8
updating to iOS 8.2 beta 4
I would love to hear from anybody who can provide the solution as to why Messages and FaceTime just won’t activate. Apple won't provide free support on this as the iPad is now out of warranty.
“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” - not Albert Einstein, but a good quote all the same ↩Same problem in 8.1.3

Hello, i really need help. I had just updated my iphone 3gs to i.o.s. 6.0.1, and after I updated, it won't activate.I tried it in itunes and it always says " We cannot activate your iphone at this time..." and when I activate using Wi-Fi, it says, "Your iPhone cannot be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable." I could swear that my Wi-Fi is fine, and my Itunes is on the latest version. Is this a bad thing or does this normally occurs? Can I still fix this ? I'm so desperate to use my iphone cause I use it everyday for personal purposes. I sure would appreciate any tip or help . PLSSSS ! Thank you for that wonderful being that can help.
Do not take it to a third party repair shop - downgrading causes problems and voids your warranty.
I had to unlock it so that i could really use it as a phone.
And that is the root of the problem. Unless you had your carrier unlock it, it was hacked and cannot be legitimately activated. Even if you don't care about warranty or problems, downgrading simply will not help an activation issue.
