Certain letter combinations [ff tt fi ti, perhaps others] do not print to any printer or to an *.xps

Question

This is unnerving.  The document is fine on the screen and works with other *.pdf readers that print.  The work-around [print to image] does the trick but only if I'm smart enough to remember to use it, and to tell consumers of my output to do so as well.
This was every printer I checked and the *.xps driver as well.  Bad news.

The above PDF will look fine on the screen, but when printed to any available printer, including Microsoft's XPS printer, the noted character combinations do not print.
FULL DISCLOSURE... In preparing these samples I noted I cannot currently reproduce this phenomenon. If I simply open any of the previously 'bad' base documents in Word and do nothing but re-create PDFs, those new PDFs DO NOT have this problem of printing from Acrobat.  I have done both Windows and Office updates since I created the discrepant PDF files.
This tells me that there likely was something going on in the Word conversion to PDF that gave the Acrobat print engine (but not viewer) fits.  Peculiar other readers were OK, but irrelevant; maybe Adobe 8 was OK, too...
Given the number of different ways to solve the problem ['print image' in Acrobat settings; use other readers, forget about paper], I am less concerned.  I will, as a background task, try to bound when the issue started for me and more precisely when it stopped [looks like every PDF I created between Feb 13 and Mar 14 was messed up; only a few government contracts and letters need to be re-done]
