Certain Movies not compatible with iMovie.

I've tried everything with iMovie, and there's nothing wrong with that-in fact, it seems to be a problem with certain movies. And there doesn't seem to be any pattern.
I can use a movie that I've taken from the beginning of a roll, and not use one near the end, however, all of my movies in my iPhoto library can be seen in quicktime.
I can import some movies into iMovie, just not all of them.
I'm rebuilding my thumbnail cache right now. Doesn't seem to be working.

MilaUno:
Maybe you should post your question in the iMovie forum where you're more likely to get a potential solution.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Why is a video clip from iphoto not compatible with imovie?

i have a video clip in iphoto and when i try to add it by dragging it into the videos in imovie, it says "the file will not be imported. it is not compatible with imovie". this video clip was taken with my friend's point and shoot type camera, then put on her computer, then put on a flash drive, then put on my computer. thank you so much for any help!

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
Some "..point and shoot.." cameras create movies in an iMovie-compatible ".mov" format, but others create .avi files, or they record in the MPEG-1 format which iMovie can't unscramble.
Not all point and shoot movies are compatible with iMovie, even if they play using Apple's QuickTime movie player which iPhoto relies on.
These non-compatible movies need to be converted to .mov format, or some other compatible format such as DV or AIC, before trying to import them into iMovie. If you have QuickTime Pro, you can just open the movie clips and then use 'Export' to save them in the .mov format.
..More details from me - or others - later; I'm dashing out right now for a bite to eat..

  • I just discovered my videos from my Canon digital camera are not compatible with imovie or idvd so I need new software. Any ideas?

Hi. I just discovered my videos from my Canon digital camera are not compatible with imovie or idvd (I'm very disappointed about that.) The photos are stored in my iphoto and I can burn a dvd using idvd but there is no audio So.... I need new software. I have a Mac OS X 10.5.8 and my digital still camera is the Canon Cybershot These are home movies of my kids and the viedeos are precious. Thanks in advance!

    Canon Cybershot
I can't trace a camera of that name. All that comes up is either the Sony Cybershot or the Canon Powershot!
Please confirm excactly what camera you have, and what version of iMovie.

  • External Drive not compatible with iMovie

I just purchased a WD My Book 500gb drive to store home videos I'm editing in iMovie. The drive shows up in the event library with a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in the center. If I try to drag events to the drive I get the following message "volume is not compatible with iMovie." I have searched the discussion board, but have only succeeded in totally confusing myself. I'm sure this is probably a simple matter, but I can't seem to untangle it... Please help.

  • Integral iSight not compatible with iMovie

Just found this article in the Apple Knowledge Base. It says that the integral iSight in the new iMac G5 will not work with iMovie. So much for having a $150 iSight camera built into your iMac as it is an iSight in name only, not functionality.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302749

You can capture from the built-in iSight under the following conditions:
    1. Plug-in a separate FW deck/cam, and power it up such that it's output is recognized and displayed in iMovie.
    2. Power-off the deck/cam, or just unplug it.
Very shortly thereafter, iMovie should display the output from the built-in iSight, and iSight's green activity light should come on.
I found this out just today - quite by chance. Be a little careful, it's a temporary session. As soon as you go to your clips or timeline, the built-in iSight link is gone, until you repeat steps 1 and 2 above again.

  • BlackBook graphics card not compatible with iMovie HD?

I recently launched iMovie HD for the first time on my BlackBook running Leopard. I got a dialog box that my graphics card may not be compatible and some transitions may not work. I haven't actually done any editing yet so I haven't actually tested any transitions, but what's up?
If iMovie HD isn't compatible with the BlackBook graphics card, what is?

Check out http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs.html for the minimum and recommended specs.

If you had a 9600 you might be able to run Motion, but I think you would get abysmal performance.

  • Added new backup drive getting:"This volume is not compatible with iMovie"

Anyone know why this error occurs? I just added a new backup drive and it gives me that error message. I can save iMovie clips to my other backup drive...but not the new one. Any clues?
    Thanks!

An easy way to see how it's formatted is to hold down the Ctrl key and click on the disc's icon on your Desktop, then choose "Get Info..." ..that'll tell you how it's formatted.
If it's a large disc ..say, more than 250GB.. and it's been formatted for a PC (..it may show 'PC Exchange' as the type of format when you use 'Get Info'..) then it may need to be partitioned before it can be formatted ..which may be why you get the message "File system formatter failed".
First of all, take off the drive whatever you want to keep, as formatting will erase everything that's already on it!
If it is larger than 250GB, and was formatted as 'PC Exchange' (..which will be one of the Windows/DOS file formats, such as FAT32..) then in Disk Utility, select that external disc, and choose the 'Partition' tab, then under 'Volume Scheme' click the little arrowheads and choose "1 Partition". Choose the 'Format:' as Mac OS Extended (..you can choose either Journaled or not..), give the drive a Name: and then click on 'Apply' at bottom-right.
That should correctly set it up to be used with iMovie.
P.S: Yup; from your screenshot it's a big drive ..it'll need to be partitioned before you can format it!
P.P.S: I forgot to credit Kappy, over in Mac OS X Discussions, who explained this to me some time ago when I couldn't format a large (..1 terabyte..) hard disc.

  • 3.1 library not compatible with iMovie '09 and iDVD 7.0.4 ???

I took the Aperture upgrade last night to 3.1 and Aperture itself appears to be running ok, although I haven't tested a ton of the functionality yet. What I was working on was wrapping up a wedding I shot and am putting the final touches on the movies and DVD for my clients.
However, since the upgrade neither iMovie '09 nor iDVD 7.0.4 can access my Aperture library. They seem to think they can see it, but all that happens in the wheel sits and spins. I though maybe this was due tot he current size of my Aperture library (170 gig, about 40k images) but after letting iMovie sit and spin for about 6 hours I don't think that is the problem.
Looks like there is a compatibility bug here.

To Tony: This is a known bug in Aperture 3.1 as earlier posts show. I do have the same bug. I went into few steps for solving it, but didn't find a working way. What I did:
I created a new empty library and imported few photos. This library works, iLife shows the library contents in iPhoto, iMovie and so on.
I exported few projects from my main library and created from them a new library. This library is about 30 GB and it works too.
I exported then my whole library to a new library. This tooks me over 6 hours because the library was around 300 GB with 25k photos. This library still does not show in iLife media browser.
I did a repair permissions and check database consistency on this library too. No change.
As the smaller library with only 30 GB in size does function as expected, it seems it has to do with the larger size of the second or main library or there is something wrong in there.

  • DXG 565V not agreeing with iMovie...

Dunno if this is the right place to post this, but...
I just received a new camcorder for Xmas, and tried connecting it to the computer. It pops up on the desktop and I can access .avf files or something along those letters, and iPhoto opens but doesn't read anything off the no-name camera. iMovie won't work with it at all. The camera claims to tape DV, but connects through a USB cable. The CD won't work with Mac. Is there anywhere I can download a mac driver for it, or should I just try and pull the files off the device in the Finder and try to convert them?
    Happy Holidays, by the way.

    wrong info..
according to this source, http://www.retrevo.com/s/DXG-DXG-565V-Camcorders-review-manual/id/21395ag224/t/1 -2/ your device is records on flash mem => not compatible with iMovie version 5 (topic on this board...).
maybe, if you purchase iLife08 and you own an Intel Mac, you're lucky to handle those files..

Look in your Applications folder.  If your system behaved as expected, you should have an iMovie 9.0 folder in your Applications folder.  Apple moved the old version there as even they suspected the new versions was a train wreck.

  • This movie requires QuickTieme, that is not compatible with this version of iTunes

I have a problem to play a movie, in some titles.
Error: this movie requires QuickTieme, that is not compatible with this version of iTunes (version installed on my iMac 11.0.1).

Make sure your iTunes software is up to date.
Launch iTunes. Then from the iTunes menu bar top of your screen, click iTunes > Check for Updates ...
Apple just released the 11.0.5 update yesterday which includes bug fixes.

  • My clips are not compatible with i movie 09

I am not sure how to make my video clips compatible with imovie 09. They are mpg files taken off my sony camera

the earbuds supplied by Apple for the iPhone5 are of superb technology. I want to maintain them. The problem is with my ears which do not keep those earbuds in place. (there are many people with that preblem).  I wonder whether there is something that could adapt these earbuds to ears such as mine (and thousads other)

  • IMovie plug ins not compatible with Intel Macs

I need a page turn transition for an iMovie 6 project I'm working on. I downloaded one from cfx, but apparently a lot of the plug ins are not compatible with Intel Macs. Anyone out there have any suggestions?

Any GeeThree plug-in that uses flash will no longer work, which include all the WildFX plug-ins. Apple did away with flash support in Quicktime 7.3.1 or newer! Now iMovie is basically unusable without the very cool & professional GeeThree plug-ins. If Apple keeps this up iMovie will probably go the way of the dinosaur. I've talked to Apple about this and they responded "why don't you buy Finalcut Pro". It's what Apple does best, Farm the base.....
