Certain MP3s cause iPod reset on fw 1.2

Wow, this is odd. I have two iPods that keep (or kept) me sane while travelling. I have the 60GB video ipod, and the all new 80GB video ipod.
Both are running firmware 1.2. The new ipod I manage using iTunes and the old one is managed by Anapod Explorer (which at least lets you easily add media to the iPod - without having to first go to the library).
They both now reset when playing certain MP3s. There is nothing special about the MP3 that resets the iPod, just that when you try to play it - RESET.
The MP3 are regular 44.1Khz, 128 kbps, MPEG Layer 3 files...
Anyone else got probs...

Thank you for the feedback. I just found the "hidden somewhere well deep in the abyss known as apple.com" work around for this problem... though according to apple it only affect mono MP3s which is incorrect, it also affects certain stereo MP3s.
Begs the question, if you know the problem exists, and you have the time to put a work around on the website, surely you could just as well fix the problem... and release an updated firmware.
It would be like Windows releasing a patch, that would randomly reboot you PC depending on whether or not you have a clock running on your PC and telling user to switch off the clock and wait for the next service pack... sigh.
Anyway, switching the EQ off has stabalised iPod a bit, my condolences to the other users struggling in this forum.

  • [n95 v31.0.017]Certain mp3s cause problems

With latest fw (31.0.17) I noticed that music player many times stall while checking
    for new music.
First I didn't know why, I even reuploaded same firmware, but the problem persisted.
After extensive testing, I found out that certain mp3s do that. They are however perfectly playable by
other players (e.g. winamp, amarok, corePlayer...), but seems to cause multiple problems on the phone.
    Problematic file to test:
    http://www.mediafire.com/?mpoxfexbzgn
Upload this file with vfat safe chars (the problem is not in the filename, I have other music tracks that do the same and doesn't contain special chars like this one).
    Possible steps to reproduce problems:
    1 - stalled file manager:
    - open file manager
    - browse to uploaded file
    - open it
File manager should remain half-blank, you have to kill it.
    2 - stalled music player
    - open music player
    - from first screen choose Options → Refresh
Music player will endlessly scan for new music.
I never had problems with older firmware, I urge nokia to fix this ugly bug.

I don't have an N95, but I suspect it is the id3 tags causing the problem.  They are encoded using ID3 v2.4, which isn't well supported on hardware players.  As you list Amarok in the list of players you've tried successful I'm going to assume it is the culprit, as editing tags with Amarok always results in v2.4 being used. This behavior is hardcoded, with no user configurable way to change it.
I've run into the exact same problem with my current mp3 device, and as it seems you run Linux, I can suggest installing kid3 (KDE is not necessary).  It has a 1-click feature to convert v2.4 tags into v2.3, which has far wider support amongst hardware players.  You'll find similar software to kid3 for Windows and OSX if Linux isn't your bag, but you will have to hunt for that yourself

  • Ipod resets when selecting certain mp3 files

my ipod video 5th generation resets when selecting certain mp3 files ???? As well as certain video podcasts . Whats the deal anyone ?

Is Apple working on a "real" fix for this bug or do we have to live with limited use of our iPod resources?
No one on here really knows (the creators of the programs and software do not visit the Discussions), but Apple could possibly provide a fix in the future. It may not be very "high on their list" of iPod feedback requests of new features, and bug fixes, though, since this isn't an incredibly common problem.
If you'd like to add the the voices and tell Apple about this issue, let them know here on their feedback form: iPod Feedback

  • IPod resets itself while trying to play certain songs.

For no specific reason, this has only happened so far with audio from my "Comedy" playlist. Either this is coincidental or my iPod lacks a sense of humor. Please let it be the former.
Anyway, when this occurs it takes me to the silvery Apple logo screen and the iPod resets. However, it only happens when I start to play the file. If I go through the list hitting the next button while on pause, there's no problem.
    Two questions:
    1) Has anyone else encountered this?
    2) Can anyone tell me what's going on and how to correct it?
As a side note, this also happened with my old monochromatic 20GB 4G iPod, but that issue was more randomly initiated, and was probably due to its failing battery.

This has been asked and answered a couple of times and I think that the same answer should help you out.
Seems like you're a victim of the 1.2 firmware bug. It's causing mp3 mono tracks (which I could very much believe some comedy routines would be encoded as) to reset your iPod. the only workaround at the moment seems to be to set your EQ to OFF (under Settings > EQ > OFF). That seems to work for some people.
Your other option is to try and reencode your tracks so they're not mono-mp3.
    I hope that helped. =)

  • Podcast cause iPod to reset

Since upgrading to iTunes 7, when I select certain podcasts, they open, but instead of playing, the iPod resets. This happens only with certain podcasts, and happens consistently. Has anyone had this problem?

  • Help!!!!! ipod rests when i play certain mp3 tracks

    Hi All,
Hope someone can help me. i just bought the 80g ipod Video yesterday. Everything is great except for one thing. I have some comedy shows (They are not video. It's mp3) that i downloaded onto my ipod which I also had on my 30gig. They worked perfectly on my 30 gig but on my 80 gig, it seems when i try to play them it resets the IPod automatically. It just won't play. Now, mind you.. most mp3's are either 192 bit rate or 128 but theses ones are lower. Some are 56 quality and some are just a tad higher but none the less, everytime i try and listen it just resets. But all my music seems to work just great except for these comedy mp3's. I don't understand why?? It works great with the 30 gig. Anyone have any answers to this or should I just bring it back and exchange it for another one? Thanks for your help....

is she resetting on mono mp3s, zeppelin? if so, perhaps check to see if the workaround from the following document is of any help with that:

  • After latest update, podcasts cause iPod to crash

I've had no troubles at all with my Windows iTunes and iPod, until after updating to iTunes 7.0.1. Since then, certain podcasts will not play on my iPod (they will on my computer in iTunes), and only cause the iPod to reboot (with the apple logo). Is this a glitch in the latest update? Resyncing doesn't help. Thanks

Thanks for the tip, but this isn't working for me.
Same problem persists even with the EQ setting turned
    off.
Since then, certain podcasts will not play on
    my
iPod (they will on my computer in iTunes), and
    only
cause the iPod to reboot (with the apple
    logo).
if you're getting that with certain mp3
podcasts, it might be worth checking to see if the
workaround from this document is of any help with
    that:

Hmm, I take that back. I reset the EQ to off AGAIN (apparently the first time it didn't take), and the affected podcasts play.
But turning the EQ off has to be only a temporary work-around. I am hoping Apple patches this fast.
    Thanks!

  • 5G iPod resets while listening to playlists?

Any help would be appreciated on this. At home, I recently upgraded to iTunes 7. I am also current with my iPod upgrades.
Since then, my 5G iPod (30GB) has started resetting itself seemingly randomly while I am listening to music - the song stops and the black screen/silver apple show up, then it goes back to my top-level menu.
None of my music is missing, and I haven't had any audio trouble. I am wondering, however, if having iTunes 7 at home and iTunes 6 at work (they won't let us download software upgrades) is causing some sort of system conflict.
Any advice? Is this just simply a question of rebooting the thing?
    Thx.

I have this same problem with a couple of podcasts: Democracy Now and le show.
by any chance, are those podcasts mono mp3s? if so, it might be worth trying the workaround from this document:

  • Why did my iPod  reset itself when I was trying to watch a video?

    Hi Everyone,
I was watching a video on my ipod and I got halfway through the video and the Ipod reset itself. My iPod is okay after it reset itself. I was wondering has this happened to anyone else and what can I do to fix it?
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    lizabler

    Hey lizabler!
I personally haven't experiened this specific thing myself, by I have certainly read issues like your quite a few times on the Discussions.
When your iPod resets itself in this kind of case, this happens usually because, while you're playing a video on your iPod, it's not being able to continuouly load and play that video fast enough to actually play the video at a normal speed.
This can be caused by the iPod's battery.
How charged/discharged was your iPod around the time when your iPod reset itself? Try letting your iPod's battery fully die, then let it recharge for a full 3 hours, and see if this ever happens again.
Also, if this ever happens again, have you tried resetting your iPod several times? (holding the "Menu" and middle buttons together for 10 seconds)
Sometimes your iPod resetting itself can also be caused by your iPod's memory being highly used. For example, if you have a 60 GB iPod, and you've used up 54 GB of it already, this can sometimes somehow bog up the iPod, causing it to act strangely.
If this iPod-resetting-itself behavior recurrs, and resetting the iPod several times doesn't help, try restoring your iPod to factory settings -> How to restore your iPod
I hope that info helps you.

    Hi Andrew,
What is it doing if not self-maintanence?
Well, I would assume that its a fault since no where in the iPod manual does it say that the iPod will reset itself every x number of days for maintenance. (If it was maintenance I'm sure Apple would mention it in the user manual so they don't worry people)
Also, my iPod (And other people's that I've asked about this) don't have this behaviour, further suggesting that it is a glitch or fault.
If your iPod is still under warrenty you could get it fixed by Apple

  • Normal double clicking or apple O, does not open certain mp3's

I have a few mp3's that no matter what route I go, i.e. drag and drop, manual import through file menu, or double clicking on iTunes mp3's, does not seem to open certain mp3 files. It seems to be random as I can click ten and only one will not open in iTunes. They files don't however look any different or seem to have any major differences.
I can play the files that don't open however in preview, quicktime or logic, so why can I not import and play in iTunes? Any insight here?

  • IPod shuffle 2nd gen not recognized in Mac either Finder or iTunes (but is detected and works perfectly fine on Windows)... i tried using iPod Reset Utility, but no luck...

i've been working on this for the past few days, and still no luck... iPod Shuffle 2nd generation (i know it's old).... not detected in my home MacBook... but works perfectly fine on Windows....
i tried using iPod Reset Utility, soooo many times... and i only had twice the luck of having it formatted... but even though it is formatted, it still isn't recognized in iTunes or even in Finder.... other than the 2 times of having it formatted using iPod Reset Utility, i had seen all the reuslts, like: Error ressetting the ipod blah blah: iPod has been reset, keep plugged in, until reset is completed blah blah: iPod has been reset, unplug and replug your iPod blah blah... etc, i have seen all the possible effects of iPod Reset Utility, but still no luck getting it recognized in iTunes or Finder....
and then , i tried connecting it to a windows computer (but i didn't restore it from there, and just ejected it from windows iTunes), after ejecting it from windows, and then connecting it to Mac, it worked miraculuosly.... perfectly synced and able to put music and listen to them... ejected iPod... after a few minutes, i wanted to add some other music, but when i connected it again, Bam!!!! not working again... even after connecting to windows, it didn't work anymore... guess the magic trick has been doomed...
i badly need help... puhlease...  (^_^)

Hey, I hear ya and can sympathize. I have the same
issue. The difference is that my computer can "see"
    my ipod but it refuses to show up in itunes itself;
therefore, I can't put anything on the ipod (from the
computer) and vice-versa. Apple support is clueless.
This is very frustrating to say the least. Itunes
keeps telling me that my ipod is synced to a
"different" computer, which isn't true. It's the
same computer. The difference is that when I first
got the 'pod and used it with this computer (and
everything worked fine), I was running XP. I
installed Vista and after that, all the problems
started. If I ever get this resolved, believe me,
    I'll post something here.
I'm guessing that somehow, itunes "sees" what
computer it's hooked to by "looking" at something in
the OS. Change the OS and it "thinks" it's seeing a
    "different" computer.
    Try reformatting it.
