  • Certification Nugget: CLAD - Certified LabVIEW Associate Developer

    About the CLAD Exam:
    The clad_exam_prep_guide_english.pdf states that "A CLAD demonstrates a broad and complete understanding of the core features and functionality available in the LabVIEW Full Development System and possesses the ability to apply that knowledge to develop, debug, and maintain small LabVIEW modules."  In other words, you should be able to to string LabVIEW functions together into meaningful LabVIEW code in accordance with LabVIEW best practices.  You are mostly book-learned, but can develop and maintain small VIs, updating them as necessary.
    The test itself is a one-hour multiple-choice exam with a passing grade of 70% and is available at Pearson VUE testing centers or NI branch offices.  You'll get something to write on, and something to write with, in case you have to work out some problems.
    NI Preparation Information:
    The Certified LabVIEW Associate Developer (CLAD) Exam Preparation E-Kit is National Instrument's official CLAD exam prep kit.  You will find links to their exam prep guide, practice exams and other helpful items.
    My Journey to become an NI Certified LabVIEW Associate Developer:
    After quickly reviewing a sample CLAD test, in May of 2013 I walked into a test center, took the test and passed.  Simple, huh?  In truth, it was the culmination of about seven years of preparation - although I hadn't thought of it as such back then.  It was all about visiting the NI LabVIEW Forum at least once a day, even if I had no questions to ask.  Sometimes I just combed the forum looking for interesting topics.  If I didn't understand something, I wasn't afraid to ask questions.  I wasn't afraid to defend my position.  (And occasionally I was even right!)  Eventually I found that I was answering questions as well as asking them.  My next question to ask was to myself: "Why not try the CLAD test?"  So I glanced at a sample test, realized it felt more like a review than a test, walked into a test center, took the test and passed.
    The reason behind my getting certified was to have something on my resume to compete with LabVIEW developers that had twice as much experience - or more - than I did.  Seven years of experience may seem like a lot, but it's not.
    Since then, I had become a CLD.  With the CLAD, I showed that I knew basic LabVIEW concepts; with the CLD, I showed that, not only could I talk the talk, I could walk the walk.  (The CLA shows that you can talk the talk and walk the walk, all while chewing gum and juggling a few chainsaws.)
    My Personal Recommendations to Candidates:
    This section will be a bit different than the corresponding sections in the other certification nuggets because there are really no specific strategies to doing well on the test other than know how to do well on a multiple choice exam.  Instead, I will focus how to gather the LabVIEW knowledge necessary for you to pass the exam as well as discuss the path forward.  That being said:
    Check out the CLAD kit for sure, but I cannot stress enough the importance of being a regular visitor to the NI LabVIEW forum.  The LabVIEW Gurus live there.  Ask questions.  Ask for clarification.  Fill up from the information fire hose.  If you're like me, it will only make you thirstier.
    Follow the tutorials listed here (at the bottom, Looking for Free Training).
    If you own a copy of LabVIEW or have LabVIEW installed at work, check to see if there is an active SSP.  Oftentimes your employer doesn't even realize that the license includes free online training and is very glad to let you make use of it.  Just make sure you get permission.  It is their license, not yours.  With the SSP you can take the online equivalents of the LabVIEW CORE classes (1,2 and 3) as well as a host of other courses.
    Get the LabVIEW Home Bundle!  It's the LabVIEW FULL Development system - for $50!  You can't use it for commercial use, but heck.  FIFTY BUCKS!  Nothing like learning by doing.
    Use the CLAD as a stepping stone to your CLD.  You got your CLAD to distinguish yourself from the crowd only to learn that having a CLAD is like being a second lieutenant in the army.  (Hint: The army is full of them.)  Study hard and get that CLD!  Become a senior officer!  Show the world - and yourself - that you are serious about LabVIEW!
    Comments?
    I hope you found this nugget to be useful.  I invite you to share your CLAD experiences: "The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat," as it were.  To the candidates: Study hard.  Soak up the wealth of information from the NI LabVIEW forum.  Fear not the CLAD test.

    gregoryj wrote:
    I've been hesitant to take the CLAD because I've read that it really doesn't mean much, and should not be taken if you don't intend to take the CLD. In my current position, I never work in a team (on software) or make very large applications, so I'm not sure my experience would prepare me for the CLD.
    While it's true that it is a stepping stone to the CLD, it can also be used as a measuring stick to see how much you really know about LabVIEW.  I actually think it could benefit you greatly because it will really make you start thinking "LabVIEW" if you haven't already.  It's cheap and it's a short test.  It could be a wise investment.
    Plus, many places I've interviewed for give you a few questions right out of the practice exams to gauge your experience level.  If you show that you're a CLAD, they may waive that test.  In fact, some LabVIEW houses have been known to take a CLAD and train them up the a CLD - and pay for the test!

  • Can LabView FPGA module work with non-NI FPGAs?

    Simple Question: Can the LabView FPGA Module work with other FPGAs? Im assuming yes, but id like ot make sure first. Normaly I go with NI for most of my stuff, but they just are lacking in the FPGA hardware for what I need, but Im accustumed to LabView so I would like to stick with that to program it.
    Thanks!

    Using LabVIEW and LabVIEW RT you can access the registers on any PCI/PXI card using the NI-VISA driver. NI-VISA also allows you to handle interrupts and DMA data. For interrupts you will not actually write an interrupt service routine (ISR) in LabVIEW. Instead the VISA driver will acknowledge the interrupt to the card and then pass a VISA event to the LabVIEW application letting the application know that it needs to process the interrupt. Detailed information about this type of programming is available in the following documents.

  • Working with DIAdem REPORT in DIAdem SCRIPT

    Hello,
    I am working with DIAdem 9.1 Advanced. I would like to create a report with a 2D graph object containing one curve (X,Y1) or (X,Y2). The user has to choose between (X,Y1) and (X,Y2) via a dialog box. I want to generate this report with a VBS script without loading a predefined TDR report.
    I tried the following sample code:
    '1. Load "Example.CSV" from the DIAdem DEMO folder
    '2. Load a new blank report
    Call GraphObjNew("2D-Axis","MyGraph") 'Creates a new 2D-graph object called -MyGraph- in the report
    Call GraphObjOpen("MyGraph")
      D2AXISSYSTEM     ="one system"
    ' The user selects which channels he wants to plot via a dialog box
    ' If the channel "Sine" is selected, we need to create a new curve on the 2D-graph
    ' Do I need to create a new object for the curve? Which type of object ?
      Call GRAPHObjOpen("2DObj1_Curve1") ' ERROR -Object 2DObj1_Curve1 unknown or not open-
        D2CCHNX          ="[1]/Time"
        D2CCHNY          ="[1]/Sine"
      Call GRAPHObjClose("2DObj1_Curve1")
    Call GraphObjClose("MyGraph")
    Call PicUpdate
    Is it possible in DIAdem to create dynamically a 2D-graph when we do not know before which channels will be plot?
    Thanks in advance for your answer.

    Hello Matthieu
    Variable: ObjType
    The terms 2D-curve and 3D-curve are valid keywords for new 2D-curves and 3D-curves and the enumeration terms of the ReportObjType variable for all other objects.
    I attached some topic of the DIAdem 10 help that descibe some variables that correspond to this topic.
    The following script create a 2d-Axis system an a new curve and defines the data for this curve
    Call GraphObjNew("2D-Axis","MyGraph") 'Creates a new 2D-graph object called -MyGraph- in the report
    Call GraphObjOpen("MyGraph")
      D2AXISSYSTEM     ="one system"
      Call GraphObjNew("2D-curve","MyCurve") 'Creates a new 2D-Curve object called -MyCurve- in the report
      Call GraphObjOpen("MyCurve")
        D2CCHNXNAME      ="[1]/Time"
        D2CCHNYNAME      ="[1]/Sine"
      Call GraphObjClose("MyCurve")
    Call GraphObjClose("MyGraph")
    Call Picupdate()
    Hope this helps

  • Does Labview v6.1 work with WinXP?

    Does Labview v6.1 work with WinXP? I know 7.0 is compatable but it is
    missing the DAQ vi library.

    Hi,
    LabVIEW 6.1 is compatible with Windows XP. The DAQ VIs may be missing
    since they are intalled by the DAQ driver. If you do have the driver
    installed is just a matter of runnign the NI-DAQ installer again from
    Add/Remove programs, select modify and make sure that support for
    LabVIEW 6.1 is selected. This should bring the DAQ VIs back up.
    let me know if you have any further questions.

    Will LabVIEW 8.0 work with Windows 7?
    Thanks in advance.

    According to this kb, LV2009 is the first version to be supported in Windows 7.  We have had problems getting LabVIEW 8.6 to just install in Windows 7 machines.  You might be able to get it to work, but I would recommend upgrading your version of LabVIEW if you really need to use Windows 7.

    Hi all,
    I hope you may help me in one question.
    We develop webservices for IBM WAS 6.0 (java 1.4.2) with connection to oracle 9i and WMQ 5.3CDS12.
    But now we want to change the environment to IBM WAS 6.1 (including java 1.5.0).
    Are there problems if we develop webservices with 1.4.2 but using java 1.5.0 on websphere?
    Or should we use java 1.4.2 on websphere app server 6.1? I think WAS don't run under 1.4.2?!
    I hope you can help me.
    Thank you.

    You only need a new certificate when the old one expires. Changing JDKs has nothing to do with it.

  • Web dynpro developement works with SAPGUI?

    Hi,
    I am a developer working most of my time in 4.6C. Recently i started to upgrade myself. I have studied about web dynpro and came to know that All of business suite developement is done in Web dynpro, be it java or abap.
    My question here is once a web dynpro is developed independent of whether it is developed in ABAP or JAVA, will work in all defferent forms of ui : sapgui, webgui, etc?
    Put in other words, does business suite developed in web dynpro be accessable via a normal SAPgui?

    This is where the NetWeaver Business Client has its best use case - when combining legacy SAPGUI transactions with newer Web Dynrpo ones.  Like the portal, the two types of transactions are ran within the same navigation frame.  However because the NWBC is a desktop application, the technical integration of the SAPGUI is much more efficient.  You get easy navigation between SAPGUI and Web Dynpro screens.

  • How to share Endeca development work with team

    Hi all,
    I'm wondering what is the best way for a (distributed) team of  developers to share work when building an Endeca application in the workbench (e.g. cartridges, pages etc..). I see there is a utility to export/import entire applications but this seems like overkill if a developer is just making minor adjustments to a page or cartridge for example. Is there way to just export certain resources? Or is the standard way to have a central Endeca environment which everyone works from (this doesn't like an ideal way to work to me)?
    What's the best way to share code when working with Endeca and many team members that are building the application?
    I'm a noob in the Endeca world so excuse me if this is trivial question but I don't see how this is easily done.
    Thanks!
    Dave

    Hi Tim,
    Thanks for the response...let me be more clear on what I'm asking though. We have a VCS already in place (we're using git).
    What I'm really trying to get at is how a team of Endeca developers, each with a local install/config of an Endeca application, can work on developing pages, cartridges etc.. and then share those updates from the base application with the rest of the team.
    I'm aware of the 'export_site' script in the application that will basically export the entire application and can be reimported by other team members but that appears to be overkill when perhaps a single cartridge has been updated only or a new page has been added. Is there a way to just share those resources easily for the team? Like, just importing the necessary files that have been updated when modifying a cartridge?
    Would the approach of checking in the specific Endeca application directory (e.g. c:/Endeca/apps/MyApplication) in to git be the best approach so when updates in the workbench are done/saved against this directory in each developer environment..so git would determine the specific updates that are made and we could simply just commit what's been changed? If that's the approach are there certain files/directories we don't necessarily want to keep under version control as they are more specific to each environment (e.g. like the file/directory that stores the indexed data as that will be different between developers potentially).
    I hope that better clarifies my question on this topic.
    Thanks for the help!
    Dave
