"Certified Repaired HDD" on a new desktop--What an insult!

I just removed the HD from an HP desktop where it recently went bad.  Much to my surprise, this Seagate HD is marked "Certified Repaired HDD".  I bought the PC brand new and HP installed a refurbished Hard Drive????  What an insult.  If this isn't crooked, I don;t know what is.  Thanks for confirming my switch to an Apple was the correct one.  Couple this with its horrendous technical support, and I should not be surprised.

Kenteman, welcome to the forum.
I can't see how this is dishonest.  It was well marked and it would be covered with the same warranty as a new hard drive.  Therefore, if the computer is still under warranty, you can get the hard driver replaced.

  • Does your brand new laptop come with a "Certified Repaired HDD"?

The hard disk of my HP G72-B63NR laptop has just crashed. I bought this brand new in Jan 2011 but did not purchase any extended warranty, so I am fully prepared to get a new hard disk and restore the system myself. However, to my surprise, when I remove the hard disk, I discovered that it is a "Certified Repaired HDD" from Seagate!
I googled and found a post from someone saying that their HP computers at work are like that too. Does anyone else have the same experience?
I bought the laptop brand new, so I am sure the hard disk came with the laptop because I have not changed my hard disk. Like I said, I am prepared to get a new disk myself, but this really leaves a bad taste.
    This question was solved.

Thanks much for the information. According to our database, the hard drive in your system is replaced in July 2011 in a HP service Center.

It slows down my surfing, a lot and I do not notice the error page, until I notice the slow speed, because it is as small as a page can be, showing only the " -, +, & full size boxes with a border"

  • Music on portable and what to transfer to new desktop

I have used my portable for couple of years with my IPod Shuffle. Santa brought new desktop because portable hard drive fading. How do I transfer all my music (besides Apple bought) so that I can use Shuffle on desktop? It appears that I can only import from shuffle Apple bought music. Am I missing something here?
    Thanks in advance.

Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your second computer is to network it with the first one and copy your iTunes folder across. Start by consolidating your library. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them: Consolidating your library - Windows
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the default location on the new computer. On a PC this is \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\ (or C:\Username\Music\ in Vista). You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers.
You can also use this method with an external hard drive, you drag the folder from the first computer to the external drive and then from the drive to the second computer.
Some iPods can be used as an external drive and you can use them to move your iTunes (this option isn't available with the iPod Touch): How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
Once you have copied everything over hold down the Shift key in Windows when opening iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. Navigate to where you placed the copy of the library file and open it up: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file
If you have any iTunes purchases in your library don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play them. Also if you are disposing of the old one remember to deauthorise it so you don't use up one of your allowances: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

  • What scanner to go with the new desktop 20''  iMac ?

Wife recently had to get a new 'Mac as the old G4 died. She now has the new desktop Imac with the 20" screen.
She needs a scanner to use with this, 'photos and text, just for home use, nice and simple please !!
What is recommended ? We are in the UK if this makes any difference.
    Cheers and Thanks

    HI Brian,
*"She needs a scanner to use with this, 'photos and text, just for home use, nice and simple please !!"*
I've had excellent service over a 20 yr period with Epson. I have the Epson Stylus CX3200. It's the all-in-one print/scanner and copier and never given me a moments trouble. It's not the cheapest on the market, nor the most expensive. I started with Epson printers early 90's and nary a problem. And zero compatibility issues with the Mac OS X and their support area on their site is good. Also easy to purchase ink cartridges too.
Check MacWorld or Cnet for printer/scanner reviews. Just search on their sites.

  • My desktop was stolen and my laptop hard drive failed, now I cannot activate cs5 on a new computer, what are my options?

Someone robbed my apartment and made off with my imac. I filed a report with the police and insurance bought me a new one. Around the same time the laptop I use crashed. I has installed cs5 on both of these computers. I was able to activate cs5 on my new desktop, I'm guessing because I backed up my account on an external hard drive, but since the laptop crashed and was fixed I'm unable to activate cs5 again (the message claims I've activated cs5 on too many computers). The hard drive in the laptop was replaced. How can I reinstall cs5 on my laptop?

You need to contact Adobe Support either by chat or via phone when you have serial number and activation issues involving inaccessible machines.
Here is a link to a page with options to help make contact:

i have a laptop mac 3 years old i did not pay the extend warranty plan, so know i can't update the iPhone 5 because thai do not accepted a update for iTunes the new version what i have to do call to apple or make repair

You need to be running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or newer to sync the iPhone 5; this may require buying a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store. OS upgrades aren't covered by the warranty.

  • How do I change what the desktop background is for new desktops?

I am on OS X Mavericks and I want to change my desktop background so that every new desktop I create has that background, but whenever I change the background, it only changes the background for the desktop I was currently in and all new desktops I create still have the old background. How do you change the background for new desktops?

Create a new Desktop and activate that desktop.
Control click to open the contextual menu>>Change background.
When it opens System preference/Desktop&ScreenSaver  but takes you back to Desktop #1, simply drag the SysPreference window to the new Desktop to make the change.  You can do this by mission control .

  • Can I use disk utilitiy recovery to clone original hdd to a new one

    Hi,
My original hdd refuses to boot up, and using disk utility via recovery mode to try and fix it just gives me an error "disk utility stopped repairing the drive, salvage data and format etc." giving an error about invalid node structure or something. Tried using target disk mode with a friend's mac when I was at work but the drive didn't even want to mount. Assuming it's about to die, I have just bought a new hdd (XT Hybrid) and since my mac is pre-Lion era (2010 model) I don't have a built in recovery mode, but strangely enough hooking up my old hdd with a dock and option-booting to it I can still access the recovery HD partition on it.
So I was thinking if i can essentially "clone" my original hdd to the new one using the restore tab on disk utility, and try using disk repair on it to get it working? or is there another app I can use that will do this (being mindful that I don't have access to another mac or the OS on the HDD to run it, so it'll have to be "live", and preferably free)
Or should I just cut my losses and just put a fresh install on it...
Yes I do have a time machine backup, but there's two reasons I want to see if this works - one is that although time machine is quite up to date (within a week I'm guessing, can't remember), it's obviously won't have the new content created during the day(s) before I was able to plug in my external hdd, and secondly since I don't have access to another mac to create a lion install usb drive, I'll have to use the internet recovery, and knowing my internet connection, 4gb download would take probably overnight and nearly a whole day to finish (assuming it doesn't drop out).
    Thanks in advance.
    Roy.

c boot off the 10.6 disk and Zero erase the new drive to map off bad sectors, format GUID with OS X ext. journaled.

install 10.6, differnt name user Admin account use, software update fully, option click on purchases and reinstall Lion and update.
install programs from fresh sources, and migrate the user account  back from your TM drive just to minimalize contamination from older OS X or programs on the bad drive.
if it goes badly, you can log into admin account and delete the user, try again
next get yourself Data Rescue $99 and hook up the bad drive, run that against it and send the output to another drive, then pick through the files.
     Data recovery efforts explained
if migration on the TM drive doesn't work, you can run Data Rescue on that too, a lot more files to pick through.
consider cloning your boot drive, it's a much better option than TM

  • Repair camera or buy new?

During a holiday trip to Italy, my trusty old Panasonic NV-DS38 PAL mini-DV camera broke down. It's from 2001 and it seems as it's the tape mechanims. It seems as it can't pull the tape out of the cartridge. Yes, I tried cleaning it and I tried several different tapes.
Now, how much better is a 2007 model compared to a 2001 model?
Or, in other words, should I repair it or buy new?
It must be a miniDV camera as I have loads of tapes. I have no need for HDV as I don't have a blu-ray burner or player and I don't have a HD-TV.
My camera has 15x optical zoom that I like.
It has digital picture stabilization (that doesn't work when zooming or panning).
It has analog in- and output.
I also have a wide angle adapter that's really useful indoors.
It also has decent low light capability.
    So, what is your opinion?

What about low light capability on 1-CCD vs 3-CCD? Which is best?
there's no generic answer on that, cause:
it depends on optics of camera and of size of ccd.. you should use guides as camcorderinfo.com, which provide indepth info on that.. some camcorders shout '3cdd!' but with small chips.. = due to the process of 'splitting' the incoming light, some show noticable 'noise' under low light conditions.. so, a good 1ccd could offer better pic quality than a cheapo 3ccd ...
so, if 3ccd, then 'full size' ccd... as the Pana gs400 I mentioned above ...
if you do not need analog-in, there's a very wide range of products... I like to 'touch' such devices, wether my fingers find all knobs&switches... when I bought my Sony (I like Sony, excellent quality, Zeiss opttics, Stamina battery management etc) , the other competitor was a very small Panasonic.. would be my 'shirt pocket' camcorder... finally too small for my hands..
and, it depends on your needs of 'manual control', some devices offer a 'focus ring' as on old film cameras, other allow settings only on touchscreens... free white balance?
do you need ext. mic input?
If I had to buy a new one, I would look only for optics, lenses + full size 3 ccd...
... and, after winning the lottery, that HiDef AVCHD HDD-JVC thingie..

  • Hard Drive Opens New Desktop Session

Having a weird bug after 10.9.1 update.  When ever I open my primary HDD, it default to Desktop #2.  I have Mission Control/Spaces setup with 4 desktops.  Never had this happen.  Normally drive just opens to what ever desktop I am on at the time.  Now it switches always to #2.  Anyone else having an issue like this?
    Thanks.

I discovered another issue that is somewhat related.  So let's say I move an application, for instance Mail, to a new desktop space (#2, 3, 4) and then switch back to desktop 1.  Normally if I click the mail icon on the dock, I will be quickly switched over to the space that mail is open in.  After 10.9.1 this no longer works.  I can click on the icon over and over, I need to manually jump into my hotcorner and manually go to the desktop space where Mail is sitting.
These problems are really trying me crazy.
No one noticing anything wrong with their Mission Control?

  • T500 Booted to New Desktop

I've been using my T500 for 3 months or so with no problems what so ever. It has been a solid machine and really like the Lenovo products.
This morning however was a different story. I woke up, swiped my finger to log in and went to take a shower. When I came back my desktop was the "Original", Welcome to Windows XP with no content of mine on it. I almost had a heart ATTACK!
I had all kinds of system tray icons that needed updates and none of my files or folders where anywhere to be seen. It was like a brand new computer!
It was like I had recovered my entire computer even though all I did was shut down my computer last night after surfing the web and turned it back on this morning.
After I regained myself, I simply shut down my computer and turned it back on by pressing the "ON" button. Everything is back to normal now but I don't want to shut down my system again! I'm afraid I'll lose everything.
I called Lenovo Tech support and they had no answers for me. The guy just said, "if it happens again give us a call". What a d bag.
Has this happened to anyone or does anyone know what could have caused this?
Lenovo T500 - Windows XP Professional

being logged in with a "new desktop" is one condition of a corrupted user profile -- either permanently or temporarily due to the logout switch not being properly written to the registry.   usually this is temporary unless something in the registry is damaged.
the fingerprint reader likely has nothing to do with it.   i'd want to know what happens when logging in without using the reader.   if the problem is intermittent then it will be difficult to diagnose.   examining the event viewer is about the only recourse.
i've had permanent account corruption happen before with an admin account in a server 2008 installation.   the only remedy was to reinstall windows as a repair.   the account was rebuilt and windows reinstalled without losing profile and application data.   since then the account has been ok.

  • Can you advice to a configurations of a new desktop to work?

    Hi friends
I´m not an expert in computer specifications (at true I have just an overall knowledgment about this) and I do not want to compare computer manufactured by specific companies (this is not the intention of this post).
We work with Dell computers since 2005. Now we are thinking about buying a new desktop computer for work. We are focused on social movies, like weedings, birtdays and so on. We record and edit in FullHD. We work with Premiere, After Effects, Encore (also other Adobe softwares like Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and sometimes we do some work with 3Ds Max to make some animations.
Well, acessing the Dell´s website we perceived there´s two models of computers that has a similar price (but a considerable difference in configurations). The first is a New Dell XPS 8700 and the second is a workstation Dell Precision T3600.
    New XPS 8700
    > 4ª generation of the processor Intel® Core™ i7-4770 (3.4GHz up to 3.9GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0, 8 Threads, 8Mb Cache)
    > Windows 8
    > 16 GB (SDRAM DDR3, 1600 MHz)
    > HD 2TB, SATA (7200 RPM) + INTEL® SRT 32Gb Solid State Drive
    > Video board NVIDIA® GEFORCE® GTX 660 (1.5GB DDR5, 192-bit)
    Workstation Dell Precision T3600
    > Processor Intel® Xeon® Quad-Core E5-1603 (2.80 GHz, 10M Cache)
    > Windows® 7 Professional 64-bit
    > 4 GB (SDRAM DDR3, 1333 MHz)
    > HD 250GB, 6.0Gb/s (7200 RPM)
    > Video board nVidia® Quadro® 600 1GB
if you would choose from one of them, which one would you choose? Why?
With my poor expertise about computer specifications, I tend to choose the XPS, because of the bigger Ram memmory, the bigger HD...should I assume the video board and processor of XPS is worst than the Dell Precision??? this is why the price becomes similar?
    Any advide?
    Thank you a lot
    Gustavo.

As configured, the XPS is much better.
The GeForce GTX 660 blows away the Quadro 600.  The Quadro series, being more "pro" or better specced, is false marketing.
For either system, I suggest at least two drives: one for your OS/system, the other for your footage.  (Check out Harm's guide here.)  If your budget allows, using a SSD for your system drive would be beneficial (not sure the 32GB in the XPS would be large enough).
Also, the more RAM the better.  The 16GB in the XPS should be sufficient...but I personally have 32GB and sometimes it's not enough.
Just curious...what format are you primarily shooting in?  AVCHD, P2, etc?

Based on what you've posted, your computer does not have the right tuner.   You need a QAM tuner to record locals from FiOS, or a CableCard tuner to record all local and cable channels from FiOS.
