CF card + card reader + iMac + OSX Lion = Dead mouse + keyboard

When I insert a CF card to my card reader which connects to iMac 2011 running OSX Lion, both my magic mouse and wireless keyboard stop working. I have to do a force shut down to resolve. What would be the root cause and any permanent fix?

Try doing a both SMC and PRAM resets, you should try each 2-3 times if they don't work the first time. If that doesn't work then restart in Safe Mode which will clear some caches, it's possible one has become corrupt.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

I can't open almost any app on my iMac (OSX Lion 10.7.4). Every time I attempt to do so, the affected app "unexpedtely quits", showing a window (sort of expanded dialog box) with the log history, wich form a complete report wich is said to be sent to Apple. Despite that this window has a "restart" button, I haven't been able to go any further from this point, as it repeats the process again and again, impeding me to use the affected app.
This has get to a critical point, as it is afecting apps like iTunes (especifically when I turn to the iTunes Store from within te app), MacApp Store, Software Updates (I can't update anything, given this problem) and many other apps, including Aperture 3, Fusion 4, integrated Dictionary and Wikipedia, as I've been able to verify.
As far as I'm concerned, it hasn't affected apps like Office, Vectorworks, Pixelmator, iDraw, Quick Note...
Can anybody help me on this matter?
    Thanks a lot, in advance...
    Marcus

Use Lion Recovery to repair the startup disk if necessary, or reinstall the Mac OS X.

  • Request help for purchasing HD webcams using iMac, OSX &Lion

I am requesting help for purchasing a HD webcam using iMac, OSX &Lion.  Any suggestions would help.  The following is what I've done so far...
I purchased Logitech's HD C910 webcam. It was a mess in requards to freezing up, no zoom and most of all no adjustments in: contrast, hue, color, etc. You're stuck just like a car with no engine or wheels who wants that.  The other Logitech products i.e. Pro 9000 is being discontinued with no software updates in the future  and the same with the other products. Most of the other manufactures do not provide software that is really compatible provideing true HD with full features. I'm willing to spend around $199,00 or so.  Any suggestions?

Well I found my own answer to the webcam concern that I had ....I bought the Logitech C-910...Yes, I know the Logitech states their software is not compatible with OS X ...That's OK, I only use the basics supplied by Logitech to open the cam...Logitech does supply HD settings which are useful.  I like the wide angle which is there to play around. Then I use a software program called "Webcams Settings" found at Apple's App Store. There is a small charge for this download but more than worth it to have a fully functioning system.  The best way to get there is obliviously via your "Dock." Click on the icon and type in "Webcam Settings" in the top right portion of the page and presto....you have all the goodies to play like a professional. i.e.:  zoom, pan, tilt, aperture. etc. of course your webcam camera(s) must have the capability to perform these options in order to use them.
Note I have used my webcam for everything you can imagine and have a 60 foot cord (several cords linked together) to go outside (LOL) 'Just love the goodies with "Webcam Settings".  I take outstanding pics too if I do say so, please.  Funny, I rarely use my cam to Skype but knowing the option is there for me anytime I wish.  I my cam to photograph orchids and misc. even portraits and family play photos with my tripod in hand.   Just because there is a big road block in your path doesn't mean there aren't other avenues. In the corporate life it's called take a negative and make it a positive or else.......and if you have to gripe then you better have an idea on how to turn it around.  -So- I did Logitech and Apple.

  • Buy apple care plan help fix everything for the imac osx lion 10.7.5

Hi apple pplz.. I have a question to ask you. If i buy renewal my apple care plan for imac osx lion 10.7.5. Sometime in the future, if my computer is broken down or having issue on the computer. What the apple care plan coverage all the internal part if anything goes wrong it. Cause i don't want to pay for a huge money just for fixing the parts if cost more $1000, worth more than i bought it brand new??

Apple is not here, you're talking to other users.
If you buy the AppleCare warranty, it will cover any defects in the computer, just like the included one-year warranty. Note that you must purchase AppleCare within one year of the purchase of the Mac.

We have an iMac OSX Lion.  I received a CD with photos on it from a friend of mine. My friend scanned the photos to her computer and gave the disc to me. I can hear the disc spinning but the pictures aren't coming up to view. Before having the iMac I had a Dell computer.  I was able to view the photos at that time. Is there something I can do so I can view them on my iMac? Thank you.

  • White screen of death - iMac OSX Lion

I upgraded my 2007 iMac to Lion and after a few days of perfect running the think locked up.  When I forced the power off and back on it seemed to be booting fine (chimes, apple logo, disk spinning up and I could hear the drive head seeking) but then it froze up in the "White Screen of death" (WSOD).  It was complete lockd up again, and nothing would bring it back.  I had to reboot again.  And again.  Everytime it seems to be ok, but then locks up after it the screen goes white. . I did command option , p r keys with three chimes. I have unplugged it and let it sit.  I disconnected all periferals.  I reset the SMC.  I booted into Single User mode and used unix commands to check the HD.  No errors found.  I disconnected my wireless Time Capsule.
Note that it appears to be booting fine at first with the useaul Apple Logo.  And when I boot into the Single User mode all the text indicates no faults.  The display and HD appear fine.
I inserted my original OSX Leopard disk and and tried to boot from it, using the "C" boot process and the Option boot method to manuualy select the DVD.  No good.  It just went into the WSOD again.
I have no idea what to try next!

    RATS!
After ersing (and zeroing) out the HD nothing changed.  I still could not completely boot up the install disk.  I tried the original Leopard disk, and the Apple Lion USB thumbdrive.  Both started the boot process, and gave me the grey Apple logo.  But then after a minute or two jumped into the White Screen of Death.
I then replace both RAM chips.  No change.
Now I have a brick.  A very large and heavy brick.
But the computer will woerk as Target Disk Mode, and it actually goes through a normal boot cycle.  That is, I can go into the Single Ud=ser mode and all UNIX command work fine.
Does anyone have any additional ideas of what can cause this?
    Peter

  • Upgrading iMac OSX Lion to OSC Mountain Lion. Bad idea?

I've heard that some people have had lagging and freezing problems with there upgrade to Moutain Lion.
I have a iMac OSC Lion. i got for christmas in December 2011. So its almost been a full year with this computer, and i dont want to slow my computer down.
    Should i upgrade it?
Yes i am planning on using the new apps or the apps i dont have on this mac or certain features, i just dont want my mac to be lagging
and freezing and not running slow.
    Any tips?
    This is my first mac(:

Well, only you can decide for yourself, but I can tell you a little about my experience...
I have a MacBook Pro from late 2011, and it was running Lion (10.7) when I got it and has been all the way up until this week.  I was working on a project that didn't finish until mid last week, and I wasn't about to upgrade this machine in the middle of that project (although I did upgrade my late 2007 MacBook Pro to Mountain Lion as soon as I got it).  In general, my 5 year old computer is just as fast (or maybe just a bot faster) running Mountain Lion as it was with Lion.  It upgraded without a flaw, and has been workign great for me the whole time.
My 2011 MacBook Pro was a bit of a different story...  When I first tried to upgrade it to Mountain Lion last weekend, it hung in the first reboot after the installer had copied everything to the HD.  I restored from my backup (taken minutes before the upgrade attempt was started).  Over the next 2-3 days, I went through the install process probably 8-9 times before I finally get a working system.  I had deduced that the "hang" was a compatibility issue, eoither with hardware, or with some software that runs at a very low level.  After swapping the RAM back to the "stock" RAM which came in my MBP with no change, I determined it was most likely software.  I tried uninstalling VMWare Fusion, Parallels Desktop, etc.  Nothing "fixed it".  Finally, using some diagnostic tools I found an old piece of software I had installed 2 years ago that seemed to be causing the hang.  After removing that, the install went flawlessly.  For the first evening, my system seemed a bit slower, but Spotlight was updating all of its search history, and ever since then, the machine has been great.  I can't tell any difference between 10.8.2 and 10.7.5, other than 10.8.2 "seems faster" (now).
If you make a good backup of your system using a toole like SuperDuper, or Carbon Copy Cloner, you can upgrade and try it out for yourself.  If you are not happy, you can restore your backup fairly easily, and be back to your older OS version.  I made my backup on a bootable external drive, and it only took about 30 minutes to perform a restore if needed...

  • Which Sprint broadband cards work with Mac OSX Lion?

My company uses Sprint and when I upgraded to Lion, my Ovation U760 broadband modem was no longer supported. I can't find any Sprint cards on their webpage which indicate they work with Lion.

Well, you can try to shame us if you want, but the discussions I heard
around me was that it was more important to deliver cross-platform mobile
development when we did than to wait and divert energy and time to
certifying on a new OS version, and potentially wait for a new Eclipse
version before we could do that certification.  Everything under us keeps
changing and we have to pick a point in time and ship.  Then we start
upgrading and certifying on later stuff.  We are in the process of
    certifying on Lion.

  • HELP! Internet Issue iMac OSX Lion!?

Today I turn my computer on (27 inch iMac 3.0ghz intel core 2 duo) and it won't connect to the internet. When I open airport utility and network diagnostics it tells me I'm successfully connected to my router (which is an airport extreme) and that there is no problem with my internet connection. Yet when I open safari or chrome or try to upload a youtube video it 100% won't connect to the internet. I know it is not my router because I have 2 other laptops tablets and iphones that are currently connected perfectly. Just my iMac won't connect, the only thing that tells me it's not a dead airport card is that it recognizes the router and my neighbors different routers just when connected to my network I can't do anything. Any help would be great, somehow to reset that hardware or something I don't know. Thanks!!!

  • Transfer pc contact from PC to IMac OSX lion

How do I transfer my outlook contacts on my PC to my new IMAC outlook 2011?

I am wondering if there isn't a way to do this via MobileMe. For sure you can put files up into Mobile me and access them via Safari. Perhaps with a bookmark, getting to those files will be "quick".
I just can't figure out a quick way to get them from Outlook Notes into a file that I push onto MobileMe.
Is seems like some of the pieces are there at least.
    Anyone have some additional thoughts?

  • IMac OSX Lion 10.7.4 loses Wifi after waking up from sleep

So basically just like my title states, when my computer wakes up from sleep about 70% of the time the internet will not work. My mac does see and connect to my network, but something isn't being sent as I have no connection when trying to surf the web. I then reset my modem and router, and it still doesn't work. What fixes my problem is a reboot or Logging out and back in. I don't know why that does the trick but it does. I have looked at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1501, however this update is only for 10.7.3. Is there something I can do to fix this problem?
As a side note, if I have Parallels Desktop running my iMac's wifi after sleep will not work, but it will work in the Windows 7 parallel. Why is this?

Hello, this has worked for some...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

    Click OK.

  • I cannot log in past the log in screen in osx lion. Mouse not working. Help!!!

Please someone help me. After updating my computer, everthing worked fine, until I tried to reboot. Now, my mouse doesn't work and I can't even log into the the start screen. Help!!!!!

    Hi,
I experienced the same problem. Although I am using the 10.0 MS version, it seems that not much has changed behind the scenes.
The test server I am working is not part of a Domain, however, you still have to log on using the server name as the 'domain' and then the username.
So, in my case it is TESTSERVER\Administrator as the login and then the password. I guess in the Domain world, it would be something like DOMAIN\Username and then the password.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards

They found nothing wrong with hard ware. But i am having still the same problems. It just stops responding to keyboard, mouse even wifi goes off some time. I thought it may be keyboard mouse problem so i changed them to normal usb keyboard and mouse but still the same. PLEASE PLEAE HELP.  -------- LAST ERROR REPORT IS BELOW Interval Since Last Panic Report:  687085 sec Panics Since Last Report:          2 Anonymous UUID: That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:
A stale or corrupt kernel cache
    A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
    Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for your model. Memory that is either slower or faster than specified may be incompatible.
The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.
If your system is not fully up to date, running Software Update might get you a bug fix.
In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.
If none of the above applies, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least  two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
