CF Performance / Timeout Problems
Hi,
we are developing and hosting a site for a client with around ~3 million pages and around 600k visitors per month. We recently switched to a new server and in the process upgraded to CF10 from CF8. Many things like images, downloads and video streaming is done via external CDNs. The problem we are having right now is that the server/site produces timeouts and gets from time to time slower to a point where it's basically just dead. After a reboot of the virtual machine everything is snappy and great again. Now this may take a day or a week - there is no logic to it. Also while the site is perfectly snappy cfstat also shows the occasional timeout which we can't explain. The funny thing is that the server itself isn't the problem - on the hardware site it only uses ~10% cpu power and yet coldfusion runs slow.
Just some quick facts:
2 x Intel® Xeon® X5650 Hexa Core (6 x 2,66 GHz, 12 MB L3 Cache)
RAM: 16 GB
4 x 300 GB SAS 15krpm 3,5
CF is running in a virtual machine virtualized via VMware ESXi. It also runs mysql on the same virtual machine.
But now to get to a more specific question. We created a new virtual machine and are running some load tests on it to tweak it and find the problem. It seems that after the update 5 it got a bit better. But still we get unusual timeouts / slow downs every ~2 minutes. So we dumbed down our load tests to one single cfm file that has one query in it and a standard / empty application.cfc. We also duplicated the code to php and are executing the exact same query from php. The php load tests shows no timeouts / errors whatsoever. The coldfusion loadtest shows timeouts every ~2 minutes or so (not exactly, but damn close to 2 minutes). We have no idea what's causing this. The server is pretty much a vanilla installation (we tried centos and ubuntu). Also there are no memory problems we can see in the cf server monitor. The 2 minute errors are not caused by the garbage collection. I attached two pictures - first the coldfusion loadtest and second the php loadtest.
Does anybody have any ideas what might cause this? We are really running out of ideas here.
Could be Garbage Collection in you jvm? Also make sure you have the latest updaters for CF10.
I'd suggest downloading the 10 day free trial of http://www.fusion-reactor.com/fr/ and see what it says. It will show memory issues, database issues, and slow pages. I use it everyday to monitor our sites.
p.s. I do not work for them or benefit from the sale of that product...
Cheers!

Problem Description= NSAPI - WL
OP = Solaris 2.6
Hi,
In my product, I have an operation where I upload files to my website.
When I am uploading smaller size files I am not facing any problem. But when
I upload large size files (eg 10 MB) it is happening multiple times. I did
not face this problem on Windows NT. Only on Solaris I am experiencing this.
So we wrote a simple servlet to find out what is exactly happening. I am
getting timeout. I connect to WebLogic Server through Netscape Web Server
which is running on another Solaris. I tried to increase the connection
timeout in Netscape Server. It did not provide any results to me. When I
checked the logs on NSAPI, it is connecting to WL properly, the problem is
from WebLogic. Apart from the Session Timeout in Deployment Descriptor is
there any where that weblogic has a timeout settings. I want to know about
this in detail. It is very very urgent.
Here is the way my bean works, it reads the file from disk and copy it
to temporary location and then do the upload. When it started reading, it is
fine and then when it is uploading, it is getting timeout so, it started
reading the file again, it is happening till it gets out of space error.
Please let me know what is the solution, as immediately as possible. I
would really really appreciate your help.
Thanks in advance
[blank.gif]What service pack you are using? If you are using 451 SP8 or recent then it has
a new
plugin parameter called - "HungServerRecoverSecs". Here are the details:
HungServerRecoverSecs 10:300:600 for (min:default:max)
You should set this to a very large value. If it is less than the time the
servlets take
to process, then you will see unexpected results. This implementation takes care
of the
hung or unresponsive servers in the cluster. So the plugin waits for
HungServerRecoverSecs for the the server to respond and then declares that
server dead
and fails over to the next server.
Maybe this is what you are seeing. If the value is too low it will failover and
the POST will
happen multiple times.
Let us know if this problem persists.

Hi
I am doing a project, a java desktop application. I am suffering from performance related problem in proj. Actually there is one jPanel(inside jInternalFrame, which is obvious inside main frame) which contains around 30 labels + 30 TextArea fields + 2 buttons(huge amount of GUI components placed on that), and it is too large to be fit into a desktop screen. that's why i have used a jScrollpane and placed jPanel on that. But now major problem is whenever i run a project it takes too much time, around 4 to 8 minutes. I think it is just because of huge amount of GUI components are placed in that jPanel which is placed inside jScrollpane & i think that jScrollPane is a lightweight component. But then 4-8 mins is a too much time to load a project. Can you tell me that is there any other way to put a large form inside a fixed (small) area without affecting performance of project.
In short i want to put a too many swing components inside a fixed area. Is there any other way apart from using jScrollPane?
What should i do in this case? Plz reply....
Thanks.It should not take 4-8 minutes to create a GUI. Maybe 4-8 seconds. You have some other problem you haven't described.
If you need further help then you need to create a [Short, Self Contained, Compilable and Executable, Example Program (SSCCE)|http://homepage1.nifty.com/algafield/sscce.html], that demonstrates the incorrect behaviour.
Don't forget to use the Code Formatting Tags so the posted code retains its original formatting. That is done by selecting the code and then clicking on the "Code" button above the question input area. -
OW4J Notification Timeout problem
Hi!
I made an implementation of ow4j for a timesheet management application. I implemented a custom notification activity which use Apache Velocity for message generation. I re implement the notification process to use the POP3 for reply. Everything works fine for me but with a important exception: The timeout property for the notification which seems to me there is no implementation in engine. The example for OW4J work with the same exception - no timeout.
Is my first workflow experience and I'm disappointed. Dou you have any solution for timeout problem? I tried with the WAIT activity which not works because is implemented only in PLSQL
BR,
Bogdan CraciunHi !
I made all the setup stuff but the problem is with the workflow engine. I decompiled the engine and the part with timeout in the workflow definition ( . wft file)loader is skiped. In the JavaEngine the Timeout transition is not treated. There is no background process which monitor the ProcessActivities which are blocked and waiting for replay.
The method getTimeoutValue is never called in the engine. I think there is no implementation fot timeout functionality at this time. The same problem is with Wait Function. In the Java Standard functions from the ow4j demo the call is made to a PLSQL block not to a Java object method.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

IView Timeout problems...
Hello,
We're having an iView timeout problem on one of our EP (7) app servers.
(For some reason it only happens on one of them - the others, which use the same iView, don't have this problem):
The message is:
The iView has timed out. There is no cached content to display. Click 'Reload' to retrieve updated content. You may need to wait for the cache to retrieve the content from the source. Reload
Of course the Reload doens't work, but is fixed in SPS14 apparently - we're running SPS13 at the moment.
There are actually 2 iViews that reside on a page, and I've tried adjusting the page timeout to -1, with no results. Only thing we've been able to do so far is restart that one app server, and it seems to remedy the problem...temporarily.
Anyone else have any ideas as to what might be causing this iView to timeout on only one app server and not other others? I'm a bit stumped here as to what to do.
Thanks!
Edited by: Beau Bourgeois on Mar 17, 2008 11:21 PMHi,
Please check on the parameters for (right click IView properties --Show All)
1. iViewCaching ..
2.The Timeout.
Please do set them asper requirement.
This will work and you will be able to control the iViewtime outs.
Also lookout for your Page Timeout Property.

Hello Everybody,
I am currently developing a Java Webservice for Netweaver 7.11. The web service should trigger the execution of a jar file which is locally available at the server on which the web service is deployed.
The process which is locally executed needs about 60s to be finished.
But when trying to start this process via a web service I get the following message:
Invalid transport binding settings.Read timed out
But this message still appears if I set the timeout settings to a value of 900s, which is definately long enough.
I would be really thankful if somebody has an idea, where the problem is located and how to solve it.
Kind Regards,
Carl HeckmannHi Gouray,
Thanks for your reply. I assume, that I configured it correctly, since I exposed 2 web services with this EJB, and the other one is running just fine.
The code of the EJB can be found below. The Service startDataCollectionProcess does not work, due to the timeout problem. The other service, isSystemOnlineCheck works without any problems.:
package com.sap.nwdemo.sidct.services;
@WebService(name = "SIDCTServicesBean", portName = "SIDCTServicesBeanPort", serviceName = "SIDCTServicesBeanService", targetNamespace = "http://sap.com/nwdemo/sidct/services/")
@Stateless
public class SIDCTServicesBean {
* Starts the data collection process COuld be also started using the
* console
@WebMethod
public Long startDataCollectionProcess() {
SIDCT sidct = new SIDCT();
Long duration = sidct.gatherData();
return duration;
@WebMethod
@WebResult(name = "isOnline")
public boolean isSystemOnlineCheck(@WebParam(name = "SID")
String sid, @WebParam(name = "InstanceNumber")
String systemNumber, @WebParam(name = "NetworkID")
int nwguid) {
I hope this is enough information for you to tell me if the service is configured properly or not.
Kind Regards,
Carl -

this issue is normal.
I always got this error when installing/patching the J2EE and components.
If J2EE is yellow, wait for it to be green and choose resume.
If it is green, resume. If it does not work, restart the J2EE as stated.
Note 739190 is supposed to be a solution, but it changed anything for me.

Report Performance - timeout short dump
Hello Experts,
i am trying to improve the performace of a report that was developed long time ago.
Issues i found:
1. The report has many select...Endselect combinations, and selects inside the loop statements.
2. Most of the selects have the addition 'into corresponding fields of' for selecting a few fields, without the table addition.
3. Also few selects have the 'select * from' syntax.
data: begin of itab occurs 0,
f1,
f2
f3.....
fn,
end of itab.
Ex: loop at itab.
select f1 f2 f3 from table1
into corresponding fields of itab1.
collect itab1.
endselect.
select f4 f5 from table2
into corresponding fields of itab2.
endselect.
endloop.
All this leeds to performace issues.
i have checked ST05, and i have got the details of the error.
My question is which one of the reasons i mentioned above are a major factor in delaying the report performance?
Which one of the above should i conetrate first to get the long runtime down? My goal is to keep my changes to the minimum and improve the performance. Please advise.> My question is which one of the reasons i mentioned above are a major factor in delaying the report

Don't ask people for guesses, if you can see the facts!
Run the SQL Trace several times, and use go to 'Trace List' -> 'Summarize Trace by SQL Statement'
=> Shows you total DB time and time per statement (all executions), the problems are on top of the list.
Check ABAP, detail, and explain!

Timeout problem - record is not shown properly in detail page after timeout
Hi,
I am using JDeveloper 10.1.3.1.0.3984
and JHeadstart 10.1.3.1 Release 10.1.3.1.26
I have a Master View Object where there is a field ID (for example M_VO).
There is a page associated with M_VO (Page_M_VO.jspx)
There is a Detail View Object (for example D_VO)
There is a page associated with D_VO (Page_D_VO.jspx)
There is a link from M_VO to D_VO using the field ID.
When I open the page Page_M_VO.jspx and select an ID and go to the detail page Page_D_VO.jspx, it goes to the detail page Page_D_VO.jspx. It works fine.
But the problem is:
If for example I have three ID (111, 222, 333), in master page if I select 222 and go to detail page it shows the appropriate records for 222 as I selected 222 in master page. If I keep the detail page open for more than the timeout minutes specified in web.xml and then try to access the detail page again it ask for userid and password (which is fine). If I put userid and password, then it shows the detail page with the first record which is the record associated with the ID 111. But before timeout I was working with the ID 222, so it should show the record associated with ID 222 as I was working with ID 222 before timeout.
Can anybody help me to solve this problem?
Thanks
Syed Jabbar
University of Windsor
Windsor, ON, CanadaI would put my money on the fact that since your application is timing out, it is dropping any state that your View Objects otherwise had before the application timeout.
So upon reauthorizing and reaccessing the application (and going directly to the detail page) the View Object is reinstantiated and only knows to go to its default data set which is 111.
If my assumption is correct, I don't think you could really implement this without a lot of trouble. -
ALV Report performance & export problem
Hi,
We have developed an complex ALV report which accesses the data from FI Tables like BKPF, BSEG, BSAK etc., There are almost 100 lac records in BSEG and every day around 20000 records are getting added to that. Eventhough I have used specific search criteria, system is taking lot of time. Due to this I forced to run the report in background. In background also it is taking around 4 - 6 hours.
1) How can I improve the performance of the report. Especially to access data from huge database table like BSEG with lot of conditions. Any best practices
2) I want to have an option (at selection screen) to get the report directly saved in a Excel file at desired path.
Please help me.
Thanks in advance,
MallikHi Mallik,
Already i faced this problem before. At that time i follow some precuations:
1) Check the estimation cost for that report with the basis people.
2) The selection fields mentionedin the select statement and fields order in the internal; table should match with order of Data base fields order.
3) Define type statements and then refer internal table to that types.
4) Define secondary indexes in the where condition properly.
5) Add BINARY SEARCH to read table statement.
6) if possible attach package size n to the select statement.
7) Avoid nested loops and nested selects.
8) After populating the final internal table free all the internal tables.
9) check how much time taking for each select statemnt through SY05.
Hope this helps you. reply for queries.

I am trying to use the query timeout of the ODBC specification while accessing an Oracle 8i database from within a client code written in MS Visual C++ 6.0.
I use Oracle's ODBC driver version 8.01.07.810.
(Microsoft's ODBC driver for Oracle does not implement
the ODBC Timeout feature).
During my tests I use a special stored procedure which
forces my call to wait for a specified number of seconds far much than the amount I specifed in my client code
(via setting the SQL_ATTR_QUERY_TIMEOUT attribute with
SQLSetStmtAttr).
I use synchronous query execution, and ideally my code should block until either a response arrives from the database or timeout ocurs. Unfortunately, my blocked query execution never timeouts and waits until the database responds. "Enable Query Timeout" box is checked witin the ODBC Driver configuration window for the system DSN I use to access the database.
When I try the same test setting with an MS_SQL Sever instead of an Oracle connection (via the Microsoft's driver manager for SQL Server as expected), everyting works fine and the timeout occurs.
Is there anyone who has an idea on why this could happen?
Many thanks in advance.
A.F.AtesJules,
Thanks for the pointer. So what does my 'connection string'
look like with your suggestion in the above example? Would the code
Dim MM_connPathData_STRING
MM_connPathData_STRING = "PROVIDER=SQLOLEDB;DATA
SOURCE=PATHOLOGY1;UID=user;PWD=pass;DATABASE=pathnet_data"
be significantly quicker?
I *have* looked at the database but my problem is there is
nothing I can do with the underlying structure - I'm just working
with what I'm given )-; What I need is a way of connecting to the
data regardless of the response time. What I am giving the users is
a view on *their* data - essentially, if it's slow then that is
their problem!!
Again, thanks for all and any input,
Simon -
I have identified following problem in oracle.
I would like to explain it through an example for the understanding of exact problem
I created a view say ‘view_1’ and another view ‘view_2’ based on view ‘view_1’ there are some functions like sum involved in each view that’s why there was a need to make view on view … I kept on making views based on other views upto 5th level that is keeping the order my last view was view_5 that was based on view_4
Now when I run the query of view_5 I get the required result but when I query the last view e.g select * from view_5 the system goes into a very long wait state. I waited for more then 16 minutes but nothing happened so I had to cancel the query.
is there any limitation in oracle or how can i view statistics of and reasons of this wait state?
please help meThe biggest issue about the views that they are not designed for performance but for transperancy, easiness. Views can be of two types, mergeable and non-mergeable. Mostly, if the view is non-mergeable, its going to give a bad performance( not a strict rule though). So as you are using so many of them, there are chances that this thing is effecting you. Suggest you to post your query,its explain plan over here with full database version. Please use the { code } tag(without spaces) to do so.

Business Intelligence and performance point problem
Hi Everyone,
Please does anyone know why creating a dashboard from a Sharepoint list is such a hassle. I have configured performance point services, a secure store and a business intelligent website that has a data connection library and Performance Point content
list . Unfortunately anytime I try to use dashboard designer to create a new data source and specify the site settings(using unattended account method) I can't save it. It gives me an error claiming that I either don't have permissions or the data source
doesn't exist.
A search around the web for answers doesn't seems to solve my problem as it suggests that the problem is associate with many things which I'm not clear about. Please could someone who is good at this at least tell me the critical things to check and the
clearest way to set this up.
Thanks,
DominicHi Dominic,
According to your error " I either don't have permissions or the data source doesn't exist", it should be related to the unattended account permission.
Once the unattended service account has been configured, you must grant that account access to your data sources:
For SQL Server data, the account must have a SQL logon with db_datareader permissions on each database that you want to access.
For SQL Server Analysis Services data, the account must have read access to the cube or an appropriate portion of the cube, depending on your needs.
For Excel Services data, the account must have access to the Excel workbook in a SharePoint document library.
For data in a SharePoint list, the account must have read access to the list.
