CF Standard, MS Exchange and SQL on one computer - best practices?

After attending Ryan Favro's session on vmware, I realized my
one box should function to it's full capacity (it's a dual physical
processor Supermicro/AMD Opteron w/ 8 hotswap Raptors, expandable
to a quad 2.6Ghz/8Gb RAM).
I had planned on running CF Standard (bought it), SQL
Express, and in fact all of my development stuff (Flex/Photoshop
CS2, which I also bought)) on this box, but that idea blew up when
I realized my PNY Quadro wouldn't run under Server 2003SBS (which,
you guess it, I also bought LOL). So, I've stripped out the
GUI-stuff - it's just going to be a server (web/email and database)
now. Webserver for my own sites, so no reason to spend money I
don't have on Enterprise CF. I will probably run a bunch of stuff
for friends under my domain in folders, i.e.,
faceitphoto.ca/mystuff, faceitphoto.ca/friend1stuff,
faceitphoto.ca/friend3 stuff...not more advanced than that. They
can forward/cloak however they see fit at their expense.
I see SQL Is available in a version that offers web services
- is that valid to me at all? Or am I good with just the MS SQL
Express?
Is MS Exchange going to function fine as the email server in
CF, i.e., can I point it as the source in Administrator? I have the
MX entry or whatever it's called from my ISP for faceitphoto.ca
pointed to my static IP.
Most importantly, as per the title, how would you recommend
setting this up? Should I buy XP Pro and run SQL under it, and CF
under my Server 2003 with the mailserver (Exchange) running in the
same environment? Is vmware the answer here?
Any other suggestions? I'm pretty much out of money after the
laptop comes...
And yes, I'm a bit out of my league here, so I will take the
recommendations to someone who knows what they are doing. I want
the OS/Apps drives all Ghosted when it's done (running, configured,
current updates applied). This isn't for a business (yet), so
please keep your $$$ recommendations with that in mind...but I am
very serious about trying to buildng something I COULD turn into a
small business down the road, i.e., I like to build photo galleries
and have 'informal' expectations at work to maybe cobble together a
dashboard with CF/SQL/Flex2/FDS2, and a few mgmt/reporting areas
(they'd run it from there, this would be a development
environment). Who knows from there...

hi
"I see SQL Is available in a version that offers web services

>Sql express is just fine for start, if you are not happy
stripped sql you can allways start to use other version and import
db's there.
"Is MS Exchange going to function fine as the email server in
CF, i.e., can I point it as the source in Administrator? I have the
MX entry or whatever it's called from my ISP for faceitphoto.ca

>yes you can. you can still use your isp mailserver if you
dont want to use/maintain exchange.
"Most importantly, as per the title, how would you recommend
setting this up? Should I buy XP Pro and run SQL under it, and CF
under my Server 2003 with the mailserver (Exchange) running in the

>same enviroment is fine. you can spend $ to dedicated sql
box but why?
you can use wmvare too, it up to yours how you want to
maintain you dev/prod enviroment.
"I want the OS/Apps drives all Ghosted when it's done
(running, configured, current updates applied)."
>set some raid to your disks like 2 system disks and rest
for data and/or apps.
wmvare and you can have easy machine images, it make life
easy when troubles come..
if you do not select wmvare you can use symantec ghost
software to create images
select some backup software and maybe external hd (network
capable) where you do your daily backups
and firewall to protect your stuff!

  • Use both iPhoto and Aperture with one library-best practice?

I'd like to use both iPhoto and Aperture, but have both programs use/update just one photo library.  I have the latest versions of both programs, but was wondering if the optimum approach would be to:
a)point Aperture to the existing iPhoto library and use that as the library for both programs
    or
b)import the entire iPhoto library into a new Aperture library, delete the iPhoto library, and point iPhoto to use the Aperture library.
I should point out that up to now I've been using iPhoto exclusively, and have close to 20K photos in the iPhoto library, tagged with Faces, organized into various albums, etc; if that makes a difference...
    Appreciate any advice!
    Thanks,
    Dave

Thanks Frank!  I'll try it that way.

I have a very old (by computer standards) MacBook Pro, and a newer one.  I've been using the old one mostly for iTunes, into which I have only CD entries.  For a long time, years, the old MacBook pro ceased entering the song titles.  This is very time consuming for me, so I finally investigated a bit further.
I discovered how to enter the track titles onto my newer MacBook Pro, and was so pleased!  But when I tried to do the same with the other laptop, it failed.
What I did, basically, was what the Apple Help suggested--choose iTunes General Preferences, etc.etc.  And yes, I did upgrade the old laptop to the newest iTunes version.
Am I just wasting my time here? Is there some reason why an older Mac Pro will not do what the newer one will, with regard to iTunes?
My older laptop is a 2.6 GHz Core Duo; it has 36 GB of "memory available."  The newer one  a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7. It has 284 GB of memory available.
Both are using the same version of Snow Leopard--10.6.8.

How can I transfer my iTunes library and playlists from one computer to another?

Copy the iTunes folder (Mac: Home\Music or PC: My Music) to the same location on the new computer. If an iTunes folder already exists on the new computer (it will on a Mac) replace it with one you copied.

No.  Time Machine won't get your boot camp partition back.  There are excellent utilities that move entire hard drive contents among hard drives such as SuperDuper! and CCC, but as far as I know they don't work with boot camp partition.  My suggestion: reinstall Mac OSX on your new Mac (you don't want to hold Option key to start it everytime anyway), partition it with boot camp exactly (or similarly) as you did to your previous Mac (install the same operating system, which should be one of the Microsoft Windows I assume).  Use Migration Assistant as kaz-k suggested to move all the stuff on the Mac partition of your previous Mac.  Reboot both your Macs from the boot camp partition - I assume they are all on Windows platform.  Now you have two computers on Windows platform.  Use Norton Ghost or similar tools to migrate all the stuff from your old machine to your new machine.  Hope this helps.  Backup all your data before such operation.  Good luck.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
iTunes and iCloud are different accounts. You can both use the same ID for the store login and share your music etc., and use different ID's to log in to iCloud, thereby keeping your calendars etc separate.

  • How to connect multiple nanos and minis to one computer and share content

I have 3 iPod nano's and 1 iPod mini in my house and would like to make a central repository of music on one computer that can be shared across nanos where users can select all or some of the available tunes. How can I do this?
    Dell   Windows XP Pro
    Dell   Windows XP Pro

You could use the update option "automatically update selected playlists only" would allow you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPods. Make your playlist a Smart playlist and limit the size to just below the advertised capacity of your iPod ( for example, around 3700MB for a 4GB or 1800MB for a 2GB Mini or Nano). You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
    To select the update option.
    iTunes 6
Connect your iPod to your computer and when it appears in the Source list go to Edit>iTunes>Music Tab (iTunes>Preferences>Music tab on a Mac).
Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
    iTunes 7
Connect your iPod to your computer and when it appears in the Source list click on it to show the preference tabs in the main pane. Choose the following option and click "Apply".
Sync Music - Selected playlists. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer. You'll find this in the Music Tab.

  • 2 minis and itunes on one computer

Is it possible to have 2 mini ipods with 2 different itunes on one computer?

We have 2 minis (my brother and me) , one computer two different tastes in music. The link to help with this is no longer available. I need a way to have one iTunes, but not mix music or have the downloads mix/delete etc. Is there an easy way? I understand about having different users under user accounts, which we do and have disabled fastswitching. I'm not the brightest iPod user so if you have simple instructions it will be very much appreciated!

  • Can I use my iPod to move photos and music from one computer to another?

    Hi,
Is it possible to have photos and music on my iPod from one computer, and then copy those from my iPod to another computer? (like with an ordinary USB-unit)
And another question: Is it possible to download movies onto my iPod? If yes, how? (owner of an iPod 30GB)
    Thanks!

Did you set it to copy full-resolution photos??? If so, enable your iPod for disk use, open my computer, click on your iPod, and open the pictures folder. You can just drag them from there. If you didn't, use a program such a CopyPod Photo (google it) to copy photos from your iPod. Note that the files will only be the same resolution as your iPod screen (320x240) and not worth using for anything else. If you want to use it for sharing, definitely go with the full-res option. It is at the bottom of the photos pane in the iPod screen in iTunes.

  • How to synchronize Nano and 30Gig on one computer

I have been using a new 30 Gig Ipod with no problems. My husband just got a 2 Gig Nano, and my iTunes software is not recognizing his Nano Ipod. If I install the software off the Nano cd, will it screw up my current software, music, etc.? Is the Itunes software different for each Ipod? How can I fix this - Please help!

You shouldn't need to use the CD, as the software that came with your iPod should include nano software -- altough you might want to download the newest version if yours isn't updated (06-28-06).

  • Can I run two separate ITune Accounts & Libraries and ipods on one computer

I have a friend visiting for a month and they want to use their IPod Nano and ITunes account on my computer. i.e. purchase and download their own songs via Itunes, sync with their Ipod etc. the same way they would on their own home computer, while they are here.
I already have Itunes installed on my computer for my own IPod Shuffle, and related account for buying music etc. and want to continue to sync my Ipod through my own account of course
Is there a way I can have both of these Ipods functioning fully with separate Itune accounts and libraries on my computer? How do I do this?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

OK.... I've ran into a problem and don't know how to proceed with this.
The 2nd user is set up with their ITunes account and we have successfully purchased a few songs.
What I expected to do was sync their Ipod and have the songs already on their IPod copy into the "new" Library we just set up. However, indications are that if I use "sync", it will erase the songs presently on the IPod and then only put back the few new songs we just purchased. (I tried a few other things but cannot get the songs from the IPOD into the ITunes Library or any other folder to preserve them)
    1. If it is even possible, how do I get the songs off the IPod into the newly established Library?
    2. If I indeed cannot sync the IPOD / Library - how do I get the newly purchased songs from the Library to the IPOD without erasing the songs already on the Ipod.
    Thanks, hope you can help!

  • I have 2 ipods, a touch and phone, on one computer.  How do i move the library of the touch to another computer?

I want to move a library for an iPod touch from one computer to another.  The computer it is currently on also shares another library as well.
HOw do i move just one of them?

Are there two seperate libraries? Just do this:
iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive
    Or
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
or copy it for the iPod to the computer/iTunes library

  • SQL Server 2012 Infrastructure Best Practice

    Hi,
I would welcome some pointers (direct advice or pointers to good web sites) on setting up a hosted infrastructure for SQL Server 2012. I am limited to using VMs on a hosted site. I currently have a single 2012 instance with DB, SSIS, SSAS on the same server.
I currently RDP onto another server which holds the BI Tools (VS2012, SSMS, TFS etc), and from here I can create projects and connect to SQL Server.
Up to now, I have been heavily restricted by the (shared tenancy) host environment due to security issues, and have had to use various local accounts on each server. I need to put forward a preferred environment that we can strive towards, which is relatively
scalable and allows me to separate Dev/Test/Live operations and utilise Windows Authentication throughout.
Any help in creating a straw man would be appreciated.
Some of the things I have been thinking through are:
    1. Separate server for Live Database, and another server for Dev/Test databases
    2. Separate server for SSIS (for all 3 environments)
    3. Separate server for SSAS (not currently using cubes, but this is a future requirement. Perhaps do not need dedicated server?)
    4. Separate server for Development (holding VS2012, TFS2012,SSMS etc). Is it worth having local SQL Server DB on this machine. I was unsure where SQL Server Agent Jobs are best run from i.e. from Live Db  only, from another SQL Server Instance, or to
utilise SQL ServerAgent  on all (Live, Test and Dev) SQL Server DB instances. Running from one place would allow me to have everything executable from one place, with centralised package reporting etc. I would also benefit from some license cost
    reductions (Kingsway tools)
    5. Separate server to hold SSRS, Tableau Server and SharePoint?
    6. Separate Terminal Server or integrated onto Development Server?
    7. I need server to hold file (import and extract) folders for use by SSIS packages which will be accessible by different users
I know (and apologise that) I have given little info about the requirement. I have an opportunity to put forward my requirement for x months into the future, and there is a mass of info out there which is not distilled in a way I can utilise. It would
be helpful to know what I should aim for, in terms of separate servers for the different services and/or environments (Live/Test/Live), and specifically best practice for where SQL Server Agent jobs should be run from , and perhaps a little info on how to
best control deployment/change control . (Note my main interest is not in application development, it is in setting up packages to load/refresh data marts fro reporting purposes).
    Many thanks,
    Ken

    Hello,
On all cases, consider that having a separate server may increase licensing or hosting costs.
Please allow to recommend you Windows Azure for cloud services.
    Answers.
This is always a best practice.
Having SSIS on a separate server allows you isolate import/export packages, but may increase network traffic between servers. I don’t know if your provider charges
money for incoming traffic or outgoing traffic.
SSAS on a separate server certainly a best practice too.
It contributes to better performance and scalability.
SQL Server Developer Edition cost about $50 dollars only. Are you talking about centralizing job scheduling on an on-premises computer than having jobs enable on a
cloud service? Consider PowerShell to automate tasks.
If you will use Reporting Services on SharePoint integrated mode you should install Reporting Services on the same server where SharePoint is located.
SQL Server can coexist with Terminal Services with the exception of clustered environments.
SSIS packages may be competing with users for accessing to files. Maybe copying them to a disk resource available for the SSIS server may be a better solution.
A few more things to consider:
Performance storage subsystem on the cloud service.
How Many cores? How much RAM?
Creating a Domain Controller or using active directory services.
    These resources may be useful.
