CF vs Joomla CMS

Hi.
Noob, sorry!
Currently I have been running joomla 1.5 on our website, http://www.4yacht.com
We are now searching for alternative solutions to better our user experiences. We find we can do a lot with the current CMS, however we like the flexability on CF in regards to the op system.
Do you feel that CF might be a better solution for us?

If the users have not Internet and Information system background,
forget Joomla.
Make your own CMS with CF,
CF is so easy and powerfull to build any system you want.
Then you can customize your CMS to the user level.
I have seen so many Joomla users, getting mad with the administration ...
This is my strategy, I make my own CMS and other packages with CF,
then you have the full control on fonctionnalities to adapt them to customers levels.
And they are so happy.

I guess I have two answer on two levels. The wordpress plugin (EdgeSuite) allows you to place compositions inline or use iframes, so it is not really plugin vs. iframes.
EdgeSuite brings various benefits (if you ask me):
First of all, it comes down to just uploading stuff, place it, done. No ftp upload, filehandling or whatsoever.
More over that the plugin enables sharing of core edge libraries. E.g. if you place two compositions on a page without modifying them, all the edge libraries (edge.js, jquery, yep, easings...) will be loaded twice as they sit in different directories. Same with viewing compositions on different pages, each composition loads its own set of libraries. 10 different compositions results in 10x loading of all libs. Edge Suite on the other hand alters the path for the resources and places them in one directory. Libs are only loaded once, for the whole page.
If you have a simple website cluttering your webspace at root level might be an option. If you are using a CMS and have 10 compositions that is just awful. EdgeSuite places all composition files in a clean file structure within subfolders, no cluttering.
That's just from the top of my head.
The iframe topic is a bit more difficult. Personally I think iframes are mostly bad practice. It's like in the early days of the web with table layouts and framesets. There are cases where iframes make total sense and are the best way to go and that's why EdgeSuite can also render iframes. But I personally only want to "see" an iframe when there is no other option. If you can do it inline, do it inline. Bad SEO, loading times, semantic fragmentation... security aspects, sandboxing on the other hand are just a couple of the most common arguments. Most of the arguments don't directly apply to the context of Edge Animate, but still... decide for yourself

Importing DW site Into Joomla CMS

I have finalized my site using dreamweaver CS6, and it works fine if i just upload it to the remote server directly. However, i know in te near future tis site is going to be updated regulary when it comes to articles. I Have liased with Joomla before, but i seem to have problems figuring ou how to just carry my site created in dreamweaver and ave it sit in Joomla so that i can be doing regular updates. Is there anyone wo can help me on ow to go about this.

Thanks for the reply, That really does help, when i think of rebuilding te site through joomla, i just want to loose it, with all the small changes i have made to the site using CSS and HTML, i think it will be an over whelming task, put in mind the deadline. with the customization and all the other details i have made, i do not see how joomla is going to be of extra help, offcourse that will change when it comes to regular upload..i will definetly be changing articles through dreamweaver. So if am to ask, how do i set my dreamweaver site to link with the database on my bluehost. and how do i make sure that the articles i upload, will store in my php admin. i would highly appreciate the advice..

Joomla Publish plugin

I am looking in to writing a publish plugin for a gallery component running under the Joomla CMS (1.5).
I don't know lua, so I'm going to have some learning to do, but my question is has anybody done something similar?
If so, was xmlrpc or another authentication/protocol system used? Although I undrstand PHP and C++ I'm unsure of the best method to use for remote user authentication and everything else!!!
I realise I am going to have to write the api for the component (Joomgallery - http://www.en.joomgallery.net ) because none exists, but before I embark on this I need to know the best way to go about this.
I realise this is a big ask, but if someone has done something similar it will give me a starting point to research, I have never used xmlrpc either so maybe more stuff to research.
My ultimate goal, to create a plugin that will handle publishing of categories as well as images, the ability to retrieve comments and rankings and ultimately the ability to link to the cart system i.e. retrieve orders to create collections with sub collections of print sizes/finishes of selected images.
Any insight of where to start, what to research etc would be much appreciated.

I'm not familiar with Joomla, but I have written plugins that communicate with servers via xml-rpc.
Download any of my plugins and inspect the code for checking the server for an update - it uses the usual client as master, server as slave, which is the easiest to do.
I also wrote a system whereby server can be master (client replies to server commands instead of the other way around), and one where both sides were peers (either side could issue spontaneous commands that the other would reply to), but client side as master is simplest (the usual: client issues commands, server responds) and therefore recommended if possible.
Note: xml-rpc is great once the infrastructure is in place. Although if you only have a relatively small set of things you'll need to do, and don't plan to reuse the parts, and/or talk to foreign servers that also speak xml-rpc..., a regular web-app kinda thing (using url-params) may get you to a working solution sooner.
If Joomla speaks xml-rpc already, then maybe it's a no-brainer...

Received a call from Manager and we will be using Two Technologies :), PowerPoint Capture will be done by Camtasia as we are already using it and have recently upgraded from 6 to 7.
@John I am abit confused on your last statement. Can you please explain it abit.
Let me clarify more my requirements:
We will be shooting on a 720P Camera or Cam Corders and I guess it's HD.
We will be conducting Interviews and more Class room trainings on a White Board.
We will capture that and remove the noisy or unwanted part and then distribute it online as well as on CD's or DVD's.
I guess it's pretty much simple.
So please give me your Final suggestions:
Director or Premiere Pro + Encore or Premiere Elements.

Php_oci8.dll won't load

hi all
i have problem for loading the oci8.dll extension for php 5.2.2
in my computer:
i use wamp5 version 1.6.6 (apache 2.2, php 5.2, mysql 5) on win xp sp2
i want to connect my oracle server on different computer to my webserver using instant client.
my oracle is 8.1.7, instant client 10.2.
i try the step by step guide from the underground pdf (adding the environtment value in path and tns_names), but it's not working. i also try the registry editing for those value, but it still not working...
any suggestion?

there is no error shown, even though i already turn the startup error on and all error notification on in php.ini
and i have the path right, because all other extension is loaded nicely ( so the ext folder is right).
i have two webserver that i'd like to connect to oracle database, the first one, oci8.dll is loaded, i just followed the oracle guide. but has error like this:
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
the other one, is not, it don't show any error notification, but in phpinfo() the extention is not loaded.
but both computer has different specs.

Viewing HTML stored in database in Dreamweaver

For the longest time, I have tried to figure out how to
access, view and edit html/php code stored in a database. I build
most of my sites using the Joomla CMS so all of the content is
stored within its database. When I am working on a page, I need to
open the site, go into HTML view, copy the code, paste it into DW,
make my changes and then copy it back to the CMS.
What I want to do is create a direct DB connection so that I
can open, edit and save the changes all from within DW. Is there
any way to do this?

The thing is I don't know if DW has the ability to extend in
that manner because it would affect the way in which DW connects to
the database which seems to me to be a bit above and beyond what
the extensions were designed to do. I personally have not designed
extensions, but maybe one of the PVII guys who hang around this
forum or even Murray might be able to shed some light on this
subject.
The reason I don't believe it can do this right now is
because it does not have the database editing technologies built
into it, although I do believe that might not be a bad feature to
recommend (

). I know it is too late for CS4 because that is already in the
beta stages and not too far from production from the looks of it
and what has been discussed on the CS4 forums. Probably a couple
small patches and it is ready to go. Although it is possible for

Using Mac as a test web server over network.

I'm trying to play around with the Joomla CMS. I want it setup on a mac that i have setup as a server in my simple home network.
I have mamp (www.mamp.info) setup on it to easily have an apache and mysql server going.
on the mac, i can easily start up joomla by going http://localhost:8888/joomla/ in a browser.
How would I get to that from another computer through the network? I've tried it's network ip address with no luck.
Please help me out.

You mean you've tried "http:192.168.0.3:8888/joomla" or similar from another computer on the same local LAN?
If so, then is the software firewall enabled on that Mac? And if so, have you opened port 8888 on that Mac? (Sys Prefs | Sharing | Firewall > New, and add a new service that allows unsolicited port 8888 traffic -- or you could turn the Mac firewall off -- probably okay if you have firewall in your broadband modem enabled, and as long as you trust that none of your local machines will get a trojan that attacks another port (e.g., smtp, telnet) someday)

As far as I know Mac doesn't have any software like that.

Default File and Folder Permissions

Hello everyone,
Is there anyway to set a default file/folder permissions for a parent folder and then if any new files or folders get created within that folder that files use 0644 and folder use 0755? I'm running MAMP for a localhost test site to run Joomla CMS, I have the parent folder set to 0755 but when ever I install a new extension in to Joomla the files are not writable. Is there a way I can set the main parant plublic_html / www folder to work like this for new child files and folders?

Need to create a background for hompage header and site background - HELP

I would like to know how to create these types of images. I know my way around PS and FW but I'm new to the tiling, etc. that is necessary to make quick loading web pages. Any help would be great. Sorry for offtopic, but I want to ask you: why does your friend prefer WordPress CMS for this site? I see, that you are doing site for restaurant, by the way, good idea! But, WordPress, in my opinion, better for blogs, communication and simple sites. Why dont you take Joomla, for example? Imagine: you open site of restaurant, looking for best dishes, than order them - add to a cart and courier brings it to you:) You stay at home and have good dishes! But WP is not good varuant for such site, I see that you have no "add to a cart" function. It's better to use Joomla CMS for this purpose. So, you may look at this variant wilema-mebel.by and see, that there is this funtion. Think that site will get more clients) And you can find a lot of templates for Joomla and correct them with PhotoShop

CSS property Inspector shows no properties when inspecting .php file

Hello,
i`m trying to use the new Dreamweaver CS5 ability to inspect files from my joomla CMS. The site is working, has a testing server and i can browse through the site in Live View mode. Also splitscreen with Liva Data and Live View mode is working fine. But when pressing the inspect-button, the single elements are shown in Live View mode (with all the colored padding and margin boxes around each element) but there are NO CSS-properties shown in the CSS properties inspector except for one inline-style: font-size: 100% which one can see as a body-property in live data view.
Is there a error in configuring Dreamweaver or is this problem caused by joomla? There is a video at Adobe-TV in which Dreamweaver manages Wordpress files and works just fine.
Help would be great!
