Cfprefsd writes to disk like crazy

hi all,
do you have this process, too? There is a process called cfprefsd that writes large amounts of data to hard disk, it writes 3.4GB to disk only 30 minutes after a reboot. It's a Yosemite freshly installed a few days ago.
Also weird is, the free space of disk keeps fluctuating up and down by a few hundred MBs, so the process does not write that much to disk as the activity monitor shows.
A search with Google says the process is a valid part of OS X, but I am still worried about being hacked or something...Could you verify if your machine also have this problem? Thank you!
best regards,
-Rick

my cfprefsd is crazy too.it writes 16.5G in two days
and after reboot,it writes about 1G/hour
my Yosemite is upgrade from 10.9.5
seems 10.9 didn't have this problem

• Adobe Revel fills my disk like crazy

Adobe revel fills my disk quickly. I'm on a Macbook Air (128GB) with Mountain Lion. Although I opted in the preferences of the Adobe Revel software to not save originals on this computer, I've found that Revel still downloads the original files and puts them in a container to be found in het hidden 'Library' folder in the user folder. For better understanding, I'm not talking about the 'Adobe Revel' folder (container) that is created in the 'Pictures' folder in Finder. This is a very unfortunate situation since it will render my computer next to useless in a very short amount of time. I keep my originals on external drives off site and have no need for another copy on a computer with already very limited disk space.
This is even more frustrating because the software lets you specifically opt out of saving the originals on the machine, and still downloads these files. It defies as well the purpose of storing images online.
It took me some time to find out why I had 28GB of pictures on the computer, while the Pictures folder contains merely 4GB of image files total.
Is there a way to remedy this? This is a serious issue, as far as I'm concerned.

Pattie,
This answers my question.
Still it is somewhat confusing, since I did indeed disable the option to keep originals on the computer. More so because Revel stores these cached files in a container in a hidden Library folder, and there doesn't seem to be a limit to the cache size. If you have large picture libraries and you use Revel often, cache size expands rapidly.
It took quite some time to find out where the disk space was going. Once found, the question remains what to do, since it's normal practice to leave libraries alone, I guess that's why they're hidden.
A user adjustable cache size limit or an option to clear cache would be neat.

Geert-
Sorry you are having issues with this. Here is some information that may clear things up and help you purge the extra stuff from your Mac.
With Revel, your photos are stored in two places: Adobe’s secure cloud and the hard drive on your Mac if you have Revel installed there and have “Keep All Originals” set to “On.” This is the default setting. If you upload pictures and choose to "Keep all Orginals", Revel copies the image and stores a cache of the image in the Adobe Revel library.rvl package. You can click on the package and select "show package contents" to view the images that were stored in that package. You can disable this setting if you know you have your originals stored safely elsewhere, or if you don’t have enough disk space on your Mac to accommodate all photos.
TO DISABLE KEEP ORIGINALS AND DELETE THE DATA FROM THE MAC:
1. Before doing anything, BE SURE YOU HAVE ALL OF YOUR ORIGINALS BACKED UP SOMEWHERE.
2. BE SURE ALL UPLOADING IS COMPLETED. Check your status to be sure nothing is still uploading, that no new uploads or changes are pending, otherwise they could be lost. Let uploads complete.
3. Disable Keep Originals in Revel app settings (since you don't want a duplicate copy)
4. Close Revel.
5. Delete Adobe Revel Library.
... /Users/your user folder name here/Library/Containers/com.adobe.Carousel.mac/
When you relaunch Revel, you will have to wait while the catalogs sync up (which might take a bit depending on size of library) but no originals will be downloaded.
6. Delete Pictures/Adobe Revel/Adobe Revel Library file
7. Launch Revel. Sign in. Depending on size of library, it will take a few minutes to repopulate, download any thumbnails/previews/database info.
Please note, we cache items for preferences and performance and we cache thumbnails and previews to prevent needing to download over and over again. If you import on the Mac we'll cache some originals for performance.

• Does flush() safely write to disk on Windows?

From problems with a 'C' application on Windows 2000 & XP
that lost file data after a power failure even though it had called
flush() lots of time. We discovered that Microsoft requires a 'c'
flag on fopen() in order for a flush() call to to actually cause a write to disk.
This is non-ANSI behaviour and I wondered whether Sun's JVM
on Windows actually opened files using this flag on fopen().
From trials using W2K & FAT32 with JDK 1.3.0 (Java 2 Standard Edition
(build 1.3.0-C) the answer appears to be no, however, using NTFS the
data is still present after a power fauilure.
Does anyone know whether the Windows JVMs do pass this 'c' flag
to fopen() or use another method to ensure that flush() actually does
what it is supposed to. Any information would be appreciated. If
a change has been made in later VM's I'd like to know the version
it was fixed in.
Thanks
Steve

I'm sorry I'm not giving any juke dollars for a one word answer!
Eventually after searching the bug database on this site I found
that bug 4266941 'in progress, bug' has documented the problem
of a File flush() call not doing what you would expect. In case
anyone is interested the documented workaround seems to work for us.
That is File.flush() followed by FileDescriptor.sync().
I was a little surprised that (for our application) this major
flaw with flush() has received so little mention anywhere.

Steve

• Speed it takes to write to disk

I am looking for some T-sql that I can use that will test to see how long it takes to write to disk. I have two disks. G and H. I T-Sql that will tell me which one takes longer to write to. That should be pretty simple right?
I assume you are interested in the time it takes to write data pages. This is simple at first glance but you need to consider how the database engine performs writes.
When you insert, update, or delete data, SQL Server does not immediately write the modified pages to disk. Instead, data modified only in memory and a record written to the transaction log upon COMMIT or when the log buffer is full. The
actual writes of modified pages occur asynchronously. These writes are done by the Lazy Writer and Checkpoint background processes. You have little control over when those writes occur so it is difficult to measure timing.
Also consider that writes are actually rewrites of existing data pages. The page to be modified must first be read into memory, where it is modified as described above. These physical reads are synchronous during query execution and you also
have little control over whether the page is already in memory or not and that will influence query time.
Be aware that transaction log writes are mostly sequential and are on the critical path for performance of insert/update/delete queries. Data pages are mostly random and therefore take much longer on spinning media due to seek time. Data file
write performance helps the background processes write dirty pages to disk faster, allowing buffer cache to be reused sooner.
That being said, T-SQL is not the write tool to measure hardware performance and you need to consider what types of write I/O you want to measure (sequential versus random). I suggest you use a tool like SQLIO for this task. See

• Anyone having issues with iPad2 screen opening and closing like crazy on it's own?

My iPad2 screen just started opening & closing on it's own like crazy. Like it has a mind of it's own. Driving me insane. Just typing this out will take me over two mins. Anyone know how to fix this??

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart iPad: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPad. To turn iPad back on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.
Reset iPad: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Ignore the "Slide to power off".

No you don't.
Mac's auto-defragment by writing 2GB+ sized files and smaller to one space on the drive, so you really don't need to worry about it.
If your going to parititon your drive or need a large space of free space, then Carbon Copy Cloning the entire OS x parittion to a external drive, option booting off of it and then erasing and reverse cloning is the approved method of defragmenting and freeing up disk space, rahter than using defragmentaiton software that can cause issues and make the machine inoperatible.

If you need steps to *cough* clean your Mac of caches and whatnot less your kid/wife/mother/girlfriend/boss, see's it then the steps are as follows.
1: Clean/clear your browser caches first, delete your history etc. from within the program itself, delete any files on the machine by dragging to Trash and emtpy Trash (secure erase not needed if you follow the steps later)
2: Download CCleaner for the Mac and run that
3: Download OnyX for the Mac and run all the cleaning and maintainece, reboot at the end.
4: For scrubbing hard drives of traces (deleted files), use Apple's Disk Utility > Erase Free Space option: Zero (or 7x if you need military/foresic level type deletion, but it takes overnight to complete)
Make sure your browser plug-ins are current, Flash, Silverlight especially.
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
And your Mac needs more codecs, search for Perian, VLC and Flip4Mac, install those.

• This isn't a question but rather a warning to anyone using the new OS for iphone 4. The imessage uses up your data plan like crazy. I called Apple about it and they said no it's not doing it. I called AT

The new OS is burning through my data plan like crazy and here's why. Imessage uses your data plan and not your texting plan. So every time you send a text message to someone with an iphone it uses imessage and it uses your data, not your text plan. I couldn't figure out why I was burning through so much of my data plan so quickly. I called Apple and they said, no it's not the data plan doing it. I called AT&T and they said, yes, the imessage uses data instead of your texting plan if you are texting to another iphone. Also, the new OS runs your apps all the time, even when you aren't using them. So if you are not near wifi your apps are running and burning your data plan. The AT&T guy took me through the steps to turn off the apps. You can still use them but they won't be running constantly. Seriously Apple, you should let people know this. It does say it in the fine print on the website "data rates may apply" under imessage but most people will never read this. So my data plan started on October 10th and it's already at 175 megabytes and I only have a 200 megabyte plan. I've never used more than 50 to 75 megabytes in a month. Apple get it together and be honest with people and tell them. Quit denying the problem. Most people have probably not even discovered this yet. Wait till you get your bill.

kimmie92592 wrote:
It's not really common knowledge because I've talked to several people today and none of them knew about it. Also, when I called Apple they said no the new OS is not using data. Totally wrong answer. You'd think they'd know about it and at least tell people. The people who are going to be hit by this are people like me with the 200mb plans. I just think it's best to spread the word so people can know what's happening. I still don't know how I went through so much data in such a short period of time. It's not happening anymore though, not since I fixed everything up last night.
If you are using a free wifi connection, there are no data charges with iMessage. But in an area where you did NOT have a wifi connection, of course it used 3G and of course you got charged for it (or had it count against your plan limits).
I'll ask again - without a wifi connection, just what did you think was happening? How did you think your iPhone was able to magically send a message WITHOUT using any data connection? A little bit of rational thought would have made you realize that there was no way, over a 3G connection (which is a service provided by your cellular service provider, NOT Apple), that you can send or receive ANYTHING without your service provider's plan picking it up.
Nothing abut iMessage has ever hinted that it can, in any way, bypass your service provider when NOT using a wifi connection.

• "Can't Read Or Write to disk" Video Won't Transfer To Ipod

I have transfered videos to my ipod in the past but I have two tv shows from the Itunes story that won't transfer.
They are in the correct mpeg 4 whatever format. My itunes is the most resent version, but for some reason I keep getting the same error.
"Cannot Read Or Write To Disk".
HELP??!!
Windows XP

I've got this problem too. My 5g iPod 30gig syncs after about 3 minutes with iTunes then after loading songs and videos after 10 minutes i get the same message your getting - "Can't Read Or Write to disk". I think theres some kind of USB2 conflict or something. All my other USB devices work fine. All my drivers and software is up-to-date.

• Ipod will sync up once then says cannot read or write to disk.

Is this normal? The IPOD shows up in Itunes after the first sync but when I go and try to update the ipod again it says it cannot read or write to disk. Tech support says this is normal but it does not make any sense as the IPOD still shows up in Itunes.

the IPOd will sync up when I fiorst plug it in. the problem is when it is finished, Itunes says ipod update complete you can disconnect. I leave it connected, and if I try to update the ipod again after I download something or whatever into Itunes it comes back with the cannot read from or write to disk. I can unplug it and plug it back in and it work sfine. There is something with the software I guess that is not staying connected with the hardware after the first sync.

• Music Downloads - unable to read or write to disk.

Hi, I'm new to iPods, and when I try to download music
I get the message Unable to update iPod, unable to read / write to disk....
Originally I had no problems now unable to download more than one song at a time, and only the manually... it's taking ages...
Does anyone have any ideas? I've restored, reset everything and downloaded the latest software....

Hi,
Unless you are using OCR (optical character recognition) software when doing the scan, the result of scanning a document is only an image, a picture of the document. Since you only have a picture of the document at this point, the only thing that you can do with it in Word is to insert the image into the document. As an image, you won't be able to edit or search the text that appears in the image. You need to run OCR software to examine the image and convert the images of the characters into editable text. If you are already using OCR software, reply back and let me know which application you are using, and I'll try to help you further.
Hope this helps,
Ken

• "Can't read from or write to disk...." iPod error

I recently switched from my old PowerBook G4 (running Leopard 10.5.2) to a newer MacBook Pro (running Leopard 10.5.5). I migrated my account and permissions from the PB to the MacBook Pro, and everything is working just fine except for iTunes (version 8.0.2) and my older 160 GB iPod Classic (running 1.1.2).
NOTE: THE VERSION OF iTunes ON THE PB WAS VERSION 8.0.1.
Since the migration, I've been getting this "can't read from or write to disk..." error whenever I attempt to sync my iPod to iTunes. Previously, I'd never had any problems. I have tried to restore the iPod using iTunes - didn't work. I have tried different USB to dock connector cables - didn't work. I have even tried completely re-formatting the iPod using Disk Utility - didn't work. Everytime I begin syncing the iPod, it starts out just fine. At varying degrees of completion it ALWAYS fails with the same error.
I had an idea. I tried syncing the iPod to a different computer - my G5 4 x 2.5 GHz (running Leopard 10.5.5) with iTunes (version 8.0.2). I still got the same error. I haven't dropped it, submerged it in water or done anything to it that would otherwise compromise its functionality. So, I'm at a loss.
PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE!
Does anyone have any other suggestions? - OTHER THAN BUYING A NEW IPOD

UPDATE:
OK, after the visit to my Genius Bar; I thought of a variable that wasn't previously considered. Because their transfer of media was successful without the slightest hitch, I had to figure out something else.
Everytime I had tried to sync the iPod with my various Macs, I was using the same process. Since all of my music and movies "live" on an external 500 GB drive, I was attempting to use that same drive whenever I would try to sync. It occurred to me that possibly the failing was in the drive and not the iPod.
I have part of that library on a Power Mac G4 867 DP (running 10.4.9). I updated the iTunes on that machine to 8.0.2, connected the iPod and made a successful transfer of a large amount of media!
My only problem now is that I can't figure out how to get the 500 GB drive to stop hanging on transfer and update of my Genius information. The drive just completely stalls and I get the spinning wheel from iTunes and the application ceases to respond. When I force quit iTunes, the drive recovers fine. I don't have any problems transferring data to and from it and Disk Utility reports that the drive is healthy.
I have tried re-installing iTunes on all affected Macs - didn't help. I believe my problem may exist in the iTunes Library file or in the associated .xml document. My only concern is that if I do a completely fresh install of iTunes where those files would be re-created, I would lose all of my play and ratings data as well as the information about when my files were added. On a related note, when playing the music from this drive through iTunes. I don't have any issues at all.
ANY SUGGESTIONS?

that made no change. Help!

Already checked the Event Viewer. The only thing I could find is this critical level event
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
This only happens when I am running a flash video in IE10. In Chrome everything works fine. I downgraded flash player to 11.4 but with no luck.
From the event viewer, the reboots started from sometime in september.(this is my parents' pc)
I think I found the problem. I changed my video card, a 9600GT, a few months ago with a GT630. I switched back to the 9600GT, and it looks like the issue is not happening any more. But it's still verry ackward for the issue to happen only on IE10.
I'm still testing to be sure that the video card is the problem.
