Chain Adapters

Is it possible to chain adapters? I have a Mini-DVI to DVI and a DVI to VGA adapter. Is this configuration possible?
VGA Cable --> VGA/DVI adapter --> DVI/Mini-DVI adapter --> Macbook
Thanks

Try it out to be sure, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work, as long as the thing you're plugging the VGA cable into doesn't need a digital video signal.
(VGA is an analog signal, not digital.)

  • VGA to ADC adapter?

I have an older 20" Apple Studio Display that uses an ADC input, which I can use with my Powermac G5. I would also like to use the display with a PC laptop that only outputs VGA. Is there an adapter that will let me run the ADC monitor from a VGA source? I used to run this monitor from a mac mini using the Apple DVI-to-ADC adapter, but cannot find a similar device for ADC.
Alternatively, I see there are VGA-to-DVI adapters, can I chain adapters to go VGA-to-DVI-to ADC.

You need a VGA to DVI converter, but they cost several hundred dollars. It may be cheaper to find a VGA display.

  • Mini DisplayPort to DVI and VGA - Does it work or not?

I have just received my new aluminium MacBook Pro, and I think it is awesome. I can even get over the fact that it lacks the full-size DVI connection like the old one has just because it is so nice and shiny. I do need it to work with both DVI and VGA displays though, so I know I will need to buy an adaptor.
My question is: If I buy either the mini DisplayPort to DVI or the dual-DVI adaptor from the apple store, will either one of them work with a DVI-VGA cable? I have heard so far that the single-DVI adaptor does NOT support the VGA pass-through, but would like some confirmation. Even if it is cheaper to buy both the DVI and VGA adaptors I would prefer the dual-DVI adaptor as long as it can do VGA as well, because one adaptor is better than 2.

As far as I know daisy chaining adapters will not work for the MiniDisplay port. http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8300784#8300784
You will need to buy both adapters, the MiniDisplay to DVI and a MiniDisplay to VGA. I would also suggest you voice your opinion at http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html and let them know how you feel about needing to purchase an adapter when one should be included with the computer purchase.

  • Which Mini DisplayPort to buy and how to use it?

I am not technology savvy what so ever, so please bear with me.
I have a 13" aluminum MacBook that I bought on Christmas 2008. I love it and it is in great condition, but now I would like to buy some accessories to go along with it.
I am looking to hook my MacBook up to my TV because I'd like to be able be able to view my videos and photos on my TV screen to show to my family and friends. What Mini DisplayPort will do this?
I was told I need to figure out my TV's connection before I buy a Mini DisplayPort. Well... I'm not even sure about this either. Here is the information about my TV:
    - Apex GT2715DV 27-Inch Pure Flat TV/DVD Combo
    - Coaxial digital-audio output passes Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel signals for immersive surround sound (with a compatible AV receiver)
    - HDTV Compatible: N
On the back of the TV there are 3 sets of 3 plugs - all having the colors red, white, and yellow (this is where I usually hook up my Playstation). Hopefully this information gives you the information you need to determine what the connection is and what Mini DisplayPort I need (and hopefully my TV isn't too old!).
Someone referred me to this product: to http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB570Z/A
Yet I am confused because while I know one end hooks up to the MacBook - how does the other end hook up to this TV? There is no plug in the TV similar to that - is there another piece I have to buy?
Told you all, I am not technology savvy at all. Thank you for reading and if you can help me out, it is so much appreciated

  • 27" 2.93 external display problem.

I have had this display since my first iMac and never had this issue. The screen works fine but when the iMac sleeps the displays my external monitor instead of sleeping says out of range. When the iMac goes to sleep the monitor will turn off like normal.
This happens in both os x and bootcamp.
I have mini display to dvi adapter, then dvi to hdmi. This is a pc monitor with res of 1920 by 1200 but it uses hdmi interface.
I have used this monitor on an iMac, Mac pro and macbook pro and they work fine.

But in the past with other Macs you were not resorting to 2 daisy chained adapters. Obviously something is being lost in the double translation from the iMac to the legacy display.

  • Can I daisy chain a DisplayPort-only monitor through the 2nd TB connector on a WD 8TB My Book Thunderbolt Duo to a mid-2011 Mac Mini?

I'm very tempted by a refurb HP Smartbuy ZR2740w 27" WQHD display, but it doesn't have a HDMI port. It does have DisplayPort.
Since the mid-2011 Mac Mini I have has either HDMI or Thunderbolt to choose from, plus I've just bought an external TB storage system, I think I'd need to connect the monitor to the second TB port on the external TB storage and hope that the external storage would pass the DisplayPort signals along.
I've read that DisplayPort connections are compatible with TB ports on Macs, and that you can daisy chain TB devices.
I don't want to assume those statements hold when I'd need to connect the DisplayPort cable to the 2nd TB port on the external storage.
Anyone know if this will work?
    Is it "supported"?
    Thanks!

    23. How do I connect my Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to my Thunderbolt-equipped Mac when I have other Thunderbolt devices connected?
When connecting a Mini DisplayPort display or a display using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to a Thunderbolt peripheral (except as described in question 24), make sure the display is connected at the end of the Thunderbolt chain. You can use only one Mini DisplayPort device in the Thunderbolt chain.
Note: Systems with more than one Thunderbolt port, like an iMac, can have more than one Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor connected with a Mini DisplayPort adapter connected as each Thunderbolt port can support one Mini DisplayPort display.
    24. Can I connect my Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to my Apple Thunderbolt Display?
Mini DisplayPort Monitors or Monitors connecting with Mini DisplayPort adapters will not function when connected through a Thunderbolt Display. They must be connected directly to the Thunderbolt port on the computer or to a non-display device as indicated above.

  • No S-Video and composite video cable adapters from Apple?

    Hello.
Is it me or does Apple's http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/mac_accessories/cables/cable_choo ser not carry any video cable adapters that go to S-Video and composite inputs (an old Panasonic projector TV from Y2K) from MacBook Pros (2008 and 2012 models)? This is just for watching fullscreen videos.

Might want to canvass Mom & Pop computer stores in the area, that usually don't have such a furious inventory turnover rate as the big chains, and maybe you'll find what you need. OK and thanks. I tried to find on big retailer stores online like Best Buy, Fry's Electronics, Office Max, Radio Shack, etc. but had no luck. Or maybe I am not searching correctly (DVI S-Video and DVI composite keywords as two examples)? • Daisy Chain USB To FireWire?

    Hi all.
I'm not really sure where to post this, so any suggestions about a better place would be great. Anyway, here's my question.
I do a lot of work with photos, and they take up a lot of hard drive space, so what I'm planning to do is this: I'll buy a big external hard drive with lots of connections (1 USB, 2 FireWire 800, 1 FireWire 400). I'll also buy a smaller external hard drive with much less in the way of connections (1 USB only). The big drive will act as my main storage drive, with all the files for each image included on it. The smaller drive will act as the bakcup drive, with the top 20% or so of my best photos in only a compressed format on it. I want the smaller (backup) drive to be as cheap as possible, as I don't have much of a budget at all. Here are the two drive selections I've made: big drive:
    LaCie Big Disk Extreme+ Triple
    Small drive:
    WD Elements
    Desktop
So, here's the question: I know that you can daisy chain FireWire drives that have more than one port together, like this:
A cable from FireWire port on Drive A to FireWire port on Drive B, then a cable from another FireWire port on Drive B to the FireWire port on computer. I know this works (right?).
But I don't want to have to spend more money on Drive A (the backup drive) so that it has a FireWire port. Since Drive B (the main drive) has a USB port, I thought I would run a USB cable from Drive A to Drive B like this:
*Setup 1*:A cable from the USB port on Drive A to the USB port on Drive B, then a cable from the FireWire 400 port on Drive B to the FireWire 400 port on the computer.
Will setup 2 work? Will the data from Drive A make the crossover from USB to FireWire? If not, I suppose I could also use this setup:
*Setup 2:* A cable from the USB port on Drive A to one of the FireWire 800 ports on Drive B, then a cable from the FireWire 400 port on Drive B to the FireWire 400 port on my computer. Will this work better? Do USB to FireWire 800 adapters really work?
So, basically, all I really need to know is whether or not Setup 1 will work, and if it doesn't, whether or not Setup 2 will. Also, if anyone has any info/reviews/stories about the two drives I've selected, I'd love to hear that as well.
Thanks so much in advance for any help I get. Sorry about the long post; I hope it made sense.
    Thanks again.
    Nate

    Thanks for the response!
What about Setup 2, though? Does someone sell a USB to FireWire Converter?
Nobody has heard of a USB to FireWire converter that works.
The first example you gave would require a USB B to USB B cable or perhaps a "gender bender". Both of the drives you're looking at seem to still use the original full-sized USB B port, while many have gone to the mini-B. It wouldn't work anyways since both are USB slave devices. USB was never designed to daisy-chain.
Why can't you just connect the USB-only device to the USB port. If you're strapped for ports, then maybe a USB hub. You wouldn't even need a powered hub if you have a few low-powered devices and this external drive which doesn't use bus power.

  • Daisy-chain internal drives temporarily???

Hello! So after a western digital 1TB external drive failed on me I am looking to recover the data on my own. I have taken out the drives from external casing. Call them DRIVE A. I would like to daisy chain them through my iMac's current internal drive which we'll call DRIVE B. I have no need to copy the data from A to B. I just want to be able to get my computer to recognize A as another internal just temporarily so I can copy it all thru to a NEW external fire wire drive, DRIVE C.
So the goal is to just copy the data on DRIVE A to DRIVE C via a Drive B.
I have never daisy chained internal drives before and would really appreciate the communities guidance on accomplishing this. Thank you!

You should not open up your iMac, when there are far easier ways to do what you desire.
    1. You can get an empty external drive (either FireWire or USB 2.0 or one that has both interfaces). Put A in that case. Copy off the data to B. Swap out A for C. Copy off the data from B to C.
    2. You can get one of these USB to IDE/SATA adapters for $30.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/U2NV2SPATA/
Connect A to this adapter and connect to USB. Connect your new external drive with C to FireWire. Copy off data from A to C. You don't need the intermediate copy on B.

  • Modules in adapters

    Hi all,
is it possible to add validation in an adapter ? If we want a bad message not to enter in XI, can we use modules ? I mean, we define a Java class which validate the input file.
    Thx.

    Hi Elliot!
You can use the "module processor" for doing validation of your inbound message. Since this one is only available on Adapter Engine based Adapters you cannot use
e.g. the IDOC Adapter / Plain HTTP Adapter for that.
You will have to program your own Module (=Enterprise Java Bean) which you
add to your adapers module chain in the communication channel.
Some JAVA Programming and some hurdles to be taken but finally it will work.
We have done validation in the File-Adapter / SOAP Adapter / Mail Adapter.
However: Referencing to the latest news concerning upcoming new PI 7.1 validation of inbound messages will be available out of the box then! (Maybe you can wait some time for this

  • Chaining two Extremes--which order?

I have two AEBS, one a dual-band and other a little older. I am going to hook them together on different floors using Powerline adapters and ethernet. On my top floor is the cable modem and the main floor is where my TV is and where I want "N" streaming to Roku and Apple TV.
Should I put the dual-band second in the chain to be nearest the TVs, or is it better to have it first in the chain (upstairs) because it is the better technology.

Couple of additional questions. Under your suggestion, what should the settings be under "wireless mode?" Assuming it would be:
    802.11n (non-dual)= "create a wireless network"
    802.11n (dual)= "extend a wireless network"
Actually, you will want the following settings:
    o 802.11n (non-dual) = Create a wireless network
    o 802.11n (dual) = Create a wireless network
The only reason to choose "Extend a wireless network" would be if the two routers were NOT connected by wire.
Also, what about the checkboxes asking "Allow this network to be extended?" for each base station. Should they be checked or unchecked?
You will want both "unchecked." Again, this would be because the routers are connected by Ethernet and this option is the "other half" of the "Allow this network to be extended"/"Extend a wireless network" pair to define a dynamic WDS. Neither are required (or desired) when the routers are connected by wire.
The reason I was using WDS even though it was against my instinct is this paragraph from "Take Control" book by Glenn Fleishman ...
Glenn provides an excellent reference in the Take Control series. I believe what Glenn is referring to here is in a situation where you had two AirPort connected by wire (like you do) and want to extend the wireless range even further. Using his instruction for your case would be if you wanted to add a third AirPort ... say an AirPort Express. You could then configure the 802.11n (dual) and Express into a dynamic WDS.
Actually, in this case, it would be advantageous to switch the Extremes so that the dual would be connected to the modem and the WDS would be configured between the non-dual and Express.

  • Mac mini and firewire chains dangers

Question 7: Can FireWire devices be connected in a daisy chain?
Answer: Yes, and if the devices are designed according to the FireWire standard, they can be turned on and off as needed. For example, all devices don't need to be powered on to use the last device in the chain. For the best result, and to avoid overstressing the FireWire port, connect one FireWire device to the Macintosh, then add one device at a time to the chain. Avoid plugging in live power adapters into devices connected to the chain.
Avoid plugging in live power adapters into devices connected to the chain.
    Can anyone rephrase this statement?
It makes no sense to me.
I have a Early 2009 Mac Mini with a La Cie dual layer dvd burner plugged into the mini
and a 1 TB external hard drive plugged into that.
I turn on the external hard drive, it show up.
will it explode if I turn on the hard drive and then (unplug) re plug it into the burner?

Yeah I know bad things are supposed to happen.
Just not sure how to avoid them,
just do not get the meaning.
Do you mean that firewire is not "hot" pluggable?
Do you have to turn mini off, plug every thing in, power everything up
    and then restart the mini?
how can that be called plug and play?
    Just not getting it.
Thanks for you time and consideration
