Chakra liveCD - things to come...

Hi there,
just to inform you that the project is not dead
We have just released a video on our page which shows a complete installation from one of our pre-alpha builds, check it here:
http://www.chakra-project.org/
We are currently in the "polishing phase", an alpha release will be there in some weeks and the first stable version should be there with KDE 4.2...
If you have any remarks, questions or ideas what could be improved, let us know about it

Thanks for all the fish
Allan wrote:What are the licenses you need to agree to during it?
Currently we show the licenses for flashplugin and ttf-ms-fonts... I dont know if that is really needed, but for now its better to be on the safe side... Still needs some investigation on what we really need...
We also have a nice hw-detection that will install proprietary drivers (ATI, Nvidia for now) when a compatible card has been detected. Their license will also be displayed on that page.
dav7 wrote:- The close button image for the lightbox doesn't work, and additionally, the lightbox isn't vertically centered on the page.
First one is Fixed. Second one seems to be a bit more complex = not fixed, but i guess we will survive that
dav7 wrote:- Can has <title> attribute for the webpage? ^^
Fixed.
Its just a quickly hacked teaser page anyways. It will be replaced later
dav7 wrote:- In the License Approval section, instead of saying eg "jre" map these strings to more descriptive names, so it says "Java Runtime Environment" instead.
Good catch. I'll add this to our list.
dav7 wrote:- Your idea to run a sequence of images changed every couple of minutes when the system is installing does provide some sense of progress, but it gets boring very quickly - I fast forwarded through the video a bit. Perhaps you could use some kind of "monitor" to figure out where the installer is up to, and display an icon specific to that? So, for example, when the system is installing (coreutils et. al), we see some gears. When KDE is installing, we see a picture of a KDE desktop. And so on. I don't think a "Current file: ..." type thing is a good idea, however - rapidly changing text just detracts from the professional, "PC in charge" feel you currently have and which I like.
Well, its an OS installer, so we tried to find a good compromise between KISS and eye candy...
Currently we have 3 stages during the installation:
1 - Formatting & mounting targets
2 - Copy the live system to the target(s). (Yes, we dont install packages, but copy the complete live system without the live-specific overlay stuff, just like Ubuntu and several others do it too)
3 - Postinstall. This works mostly in a chroot and installs/removes packages, prepares the system to be usable and configures it.
Well, the "installation visualization" is still work in progress
dav7 wrote:- I saw "Please tell us who you are" in the video in the "Create user" section - I don't know if the screenshots are newer than the video, but if you still have that string in there, please change it. It sounds too big-brother-ey.
Already fixed
dav7 wrote:- Instead of just allowing the user to play music (I noticed that, nice one) allow the installer to "minimize" into a tiny window that just prints the installation progress while the user is allowed to work.
I guess thats against our philosophy. We wanted a fullscreen installer from the beginning. It doesnt distract you and its also a lot faster if your're not working with the machine during the installation. Oh, and it also uses fewer RAM, in theory You can even install the system on a 256mb machine, and we hope to bring that down even more...
dav7 wrote:- Provide a "log" button at the bottom left where you have a bunch of unused space that pops up a width-maximized, 30%-height panel at the bottom of the screen (resizing everything else appropriately) that shows what the system is currently doing - ie, what file is being copied, etc. Yes, I said this would be a bad idea earlier, but providing the information as an optional extra adds to the professionalism, I think.
Tribe + Postinstall provide a full log of the installation, which will be copied to the target after a successful installation. Well, i will talk with the other guys about your idea
dav7 wrote:- A simple progress bar showing the installation status is okay, but kinda boring. I like the old Macintosh System install animation - I think from version 6 or 7. If I can remember what juggle I did to get it to install the first time, I'll video an installation so you can see what I mean. No promises though.
We are open for every type of eyecandy, so a video would be useful

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")
Providing you are simply updating your existing details and not changing to another account, when you delete your account, all the data that is synced with iCloud will also be deleted from the device (but not from iCloud), but will be synced back to your device when you login again.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your computer, you need to sign out of the account from your computer first, then sign back in using your updated details. (System Preferences > iCloud, click the sign out button)
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iTunes account on your iOS device, you need to sign out from your iOS device first, then sign back in using your updated details. (Settings > store, scroll down and tap your ID)
If you are using iMessages or FaceTime, you will also need to log out and into your ID there too.

  • Its been a wonderful run with Verizon Wireless, but all good things always come to an end :[

    Dear Verizon,
I'm not sure if anyone would ever read this, but we've been a Verizon Wireless customer for over 10 years... I remember back in the day, my friends would have their phones from Cingular, T-Mobile, or Sprint and they'd always complain about their service coverage. With my head held high, I'd often let them use my old LG flip phone with "switchable" front/rear camera. It wasn't nearly until 6 years later I entered the era of data munching smart phones. Granted back then we had Verizon's unlimited data plan, and I loved it! I'd sit and watch youtube videos and tap at my phone screen for hours in a day. But all good things come to an end, Verizon started to end their unlimited contract, while our family held strongly to ours for another year or two; the ultimatum was given. Either keep our grandfathered data plan and never be able to upgrade our phones. Or be able to upgrade, but lose our data plan... Sadly we were assured by countless representatives that the average users rarely exceeded 2 GBs in a month, and thus our family agreed to let our existing plan go for the newer 'shared' tiered data system. It has been our greatest regret with Verizon, and for the last year or two we've been constantly keeping tabs of what we viewed on our nicest phones, how long we video chatted with friends. It feels that my phone hasn't been used the same ever since, and I frankly hate it. We've been using over our monthly limit for months in a row. In our family we share 20 GBs a month, but for the last couple months we had to extend it to the 30 GB a month plan, and the price is so unjustified.
I'm sad to say, that I'm no longer proud of Verizon's services anymore, it's been a great run. And its strange that those same friends that used to go to me when their phones no longer have data, it seems that I end up asking them to view content more than I should to preserve what precious data I have left...
    Thanks for listening,
    Jordan P.

The great thing about humans is we have something called choice.
To keep unlimited data or to get a subsidize device at 1/4 the cost of paying full price at $700 or more.
You could have paid full price and kept unlimited data. But you did not. Even though by paying higher for data overages each month would have been better spent on buying the phone outright.
You could have now bought tge phone on the 12 month payment plan and also kept unlimited data. (not syre how long ago you got the new devices, I think it was before the new payment plan came into affect)
Again it is something that was your choice. You really cannot blame Verizon for business decisions. Most other carriers are going the way of full device payment via different offerings, Companies like Sprint and T-Mobile have unlimited data and lower monthly costs but their build outs are not usually as large as Verizons coverage. Again its a choice, you have to either go to one of the other carriers for their offerings or stay with Verizon and choose what is more important to you.
    Good Luck

  • HT201210 I was in the process of upgrading to ios6 after going through all the process, the last thing to come up was a picture of the iTunes icon in blue with a USB lead leading up to the icon?  All I can do is to switch it off, HELP

  • Multicore RAW Processing-The Shape Of Things To Come

For what it's worth, here is a link to the Bibble forum with a presentation of Bibble 5 Pro on a 16 core AMD Opteron test bed running Windows Server 2008:
    http://support.bibblelabs.com/webboard/viewtopic.php?t=10962
(I tried to post this on the Beta 2 forum first, but it keeps asking me for a new "nickname" when I try to post or login and won't accept any I try to enter).

    >But why? I can't understand.
That's because you forget that we're talking about say 8 threads, each working on their own RAW image, so they read in a RAW (say 12 MB compressed) and have to write a jpeg result (say 4 MB). Now multiply that by 4 or 8 (letalone 16), and you see that you very easily go over the 20 MB/s of a laptop drive or 50 MB/s typical when doing reads and writes simultaneously of a good desktop drive. So you will need fast RAID arrays to keep up with a multiprocessor machine.
    >Bibble says Bibble 5 was not disk bound in the test. They also say that the test scales "linearly"
That means they designed it correctly and must have used a fast RAID disk. And indeed they used RAID 0 (bad idea for data security BTW) according to the linked thread. For us mere mortals with normal 7200 or 10k rpm disks, we would not be able to supply the data to keep a 16 core machine busy. I bet that with 7200 rpm disks and a 4 core machine you could already run into I/O issues if you're exporting to tiff.

  • Cubase 6: elements of things to come?

Just been looking at the specs for Cubase 6 and I think it's interesting to note the developments - it looks good and I've heard good things about it.
There are features here which point towards very interesting developments (VST Expression), as well as a nice streamlined approach to the likes of audio-quantize/comping etc. Also the instruments and effects look like quite the selection now.
I'm certainly not planning on migrating anytime soon, but I think it starts to highlight some areas where Logic could use some development.
I really think Logic desperately needs a new effects range as pretty much everything except Sculpture/Ultrabeat/Amp Designer is at least 5 years old, and the majority is 10 years old and painfully dated IMO (EXS24? Modeulation etc).
I also think that Logic has hung on to too many of it's old GUI elements which make some processes more complicated than they need to be (especially being an iphone user where we have become accustomed to streamlined processes).
I strongly start to question with the AU spec is going to be up to some of the potential developments here to.
I don't plan on starting a debate here (famous last words!), but I sometimes wish I had the time/patience/energy to harness some of the qualities in other DAWs as they all have their qualities.
    Anyway... post message.

Yamaha has been good for Steinberg, they put very few shackles on the company, only that they try and integrate some of the Yamaha high end keyboards into the product. Mainly automated setup procedures. Cubase 5 has VST expressions although with VST 3 it will be much more advanced. When AU first came out VST was at version 1.5 so Steinberg hasn't been standing still. At this point VST development has moved way beyond where AU is, not that the AU format doesn't have potential. Cubase 5 also has the Melodyne style pitch correction built in, I have to say... it works very well. When Apple dumped PC support I moved to Cubase on the PC, and kept up Logic for personal use on the Mac. Each have their strengths. Cubase is not as efficient as Logic but it has far less quirks, makes use of multiple cores better than Logic and has one of the best audio editors of any platform.

  • I want to erase a site so that it isn't the first thing that comes up when I type into the url line

Every time I type into the URL a specific site is the first thing up. I would like to erase this site. I have tried clearing the history, doesn't do any good. I visit google 20 times a day but still this site is first everytime I start to type "g". How do I :
    1) erase my preferences on the url line that pop up
    2) better yet how do I get rid of the one offender from the list that pops up.

If that site has a star at the far right then it is a bookmark and you need to remove that bookmark by clicking the star and click the remove button. If the entry is not a bookmark then highlight the entry in the drop down list and press the Delete key.

In your blog you accept you don't have an on-site service agreement. I can understand that after an allegedly failed repair it is not an unreasonable request that a follow up repair be carried out on-site rather than on a bring-in basis. However, a technichian can only replace the parts he has with him during on-site visits. At the depot there would be surely more resources for diagnosis etc.
I believe, and am only a party to your accounts of this, that the supervisor made a decision which would be , in the long run, better for both parties i.e. the best location to obtain a solution.

  • Hope my customer agent experiences are not a sign of bad things to come

Very frustrated and uneasy after spending over 2 hours yesterday to order new X1 and Internet service. It's a roll of the dice to get someone that's helpful, friendly and knowledgable of services. I originally ordered just xfinity internet online last Thursday. I had called on Saturday to ask a couple of questions and was speaking with a wonderful agent who explained the TV options very well. I decided to give it a couple days to think about it and set up a call back with her on Monday (yesterday). Didn't get a call so I call myself. This is when my patience was tested. Not because I was on hold waiting but because of agents giving me incorrect information, being unpersonable, and inpatient with me. Finally after the 4th call back, I was able to get the correct information and the order completed! I live in Chicago and don't have any other option for fast internet. I must be on the block that doesn't have other options?? I currently have stone aged DSL and Dish Net. Time to move on!! Hope I'm happy with my decision. Is the customer service that bad??

    Hello Petey48,
Sorry to hear about the poor experience. Feedback like this is an important step towards getting things corrected. Your feedback will be sent as a coaching opportunity for the agents you were displeased with.
    Thank You

I am having problems importing to my Ipod nano via windows 8.  I usually do this from a windows 7 computer and have had no problems; hoever in windows 8 I can only see items purchased in the Itunes store.  I do not have access to my entire library, which includes song uploaded from CDs and some videos.  As a result, I'm having problems uploading any new items from CDs or DVDs.  The computer with windows 8 is an authorized computer, so I don't understand why I'm having the problem.
