Creativity is so delicate a flower that praise tends to make it bloom, while
discouragement often nips it in the bud. Any of us will put out more and
better ideas if our efforts are appreciated.
Alexander Osborn (1888 - 1966)

I had some free time this afternoon so I thought I would throw in some comments for this week's entry. A great starter image and the usual great creative use of the image in this week's entries.
Alex: Nice group of entries. I think my favorite is #3 with the swirling clouds and outline of the heads. I'd hate to meet #4 when he is mad.
Anne: I missed the shark fin the first time I looked at #1, but that is a nice touch. Neat theme idea with the fight poster idea in #2.
Ben: Nice job in removing the teeth for your before image in #1. Great way to work in the See No, Hear No, Speak No Evils in your #2.
Bill: Nice way to work in the former Hawaiian dancers into this week's theme.
Bob: Stark, simple and effective use of the theme. When does it hit the theaters?
Charles: Nice cutout and removal of the light pole and wire and blurring the background.
Dave: Good job with merging the head and body. Is that you?
Donald: Great colors and image. Love the way the circles in the image flow into each other. Nice background with the blue/gray rays.
Ellen: Very nice use of just a small part of the image to create a central theme. The rain and background sunset makes me not want to be on that road anytime the creature is moving about.
Helen: I thought the gorilla was large, but he looks puny next to that monster man. Do you know how tall the man statue is? Good blending of the two images.
Kimi: Is that the re-write of the "Three Bears" story into the "Four Apes"? Nice perspective in the relative heights of each ape. I was hoping someone would use the King Kong theme in their entry this week. I don't remember King Kong smiling as nicely in the movie.
Malcolm: Wow, that really draws your eye to the center of the picture. What filter is that?
Marie: A nice family out for an outing. Nice blending of the various hair styles. Are those hand drawn or did you use the Special Shapes?
Maryilyn: What a great use of the shirt patterns for the background. Looks like the silkworms were really busy for this shot. How did you get the folds at each end?
Melissa: Love the quilts, especially #2. How did you get such realistic stitching; that must have taken quite some time.
Nancy: They always say lighting is attracted to the tallest item. How did you get such neat lighting bolts. Love the stand up hair.
Pauline: Great coloring page idea in #1. I always have trouble getting the right perspective in laying something flat on a table, but you did an excellent job. I thought of a snow scene as your #2, but I could not bring it off. You did a great job. How did you make the snow, both falling and the accumulation.
Red Sky: A fitting tribute to a music icon. For those you might not know, Syd Barrett was the founding force behind the the band Pink Floyd, who recently died. Ah, the classic car reappers-is that who I think that is driving?
Rita: Was it the recent heat that lead to a quick skinny dip? Love the way you made the shirt-was that the Liquify Filter?
Robin: Nice balloon effect in #1. Another re-use of the recent Hawaiian dancers and palm fronds in your #2. Great frame-how did you make it?
Tab: "Dude, I was hanging 10 on the lip of this gnarly pipe and then, like, total wet." Great way to use the shirt colors for the frame. A real Hawaiian feel to the whole image. A kinder, gentler King Kong in #2 with some updated aircraft. It took me a second to see your signature signature.
Tammy: Love the proud Daddy as son slides by. Great idea.
Tom: I heard of being outstanding in your field, but you seem to be out-standing-in-a-field. Love the Big Boy icon as his playmate and the foreground blurring to add some depth of field (sorry, no pun intended on that one).
Tony: As we said earlier, love the look of lapping water in your image.
Wendy: Nice way to work your image into all your entries, as you often do. I like the smooth round head with the orange hair wings. Nice use of the "raised box" accent for each image.

  • MEGA 180: A story of stupidity mixed up with bad product design

This is more for a word of caution to Mega180 users and future owners.
A bit angry as I managed to burn ( physically ) 2 harddrives  because of carefulness about 10 mins.
Spend quite some time looking for a SATA to ATI power converter while looking for a solution to CPU temp problem. Could not find one ( and  I don't know if any one does it )
As my old HD did not start the OS on Mega180 for some data transfer I was not able to use my USB external HD. So I decided to connect old HD as slave and do a HD to HD transfer. Here comes the bad design, the HD connection cable specifies a slot for a slave HD however there is only one power connector (ATI) for supported IDE HD. and there is a useless SATA power connector,it is useless as MEGA 180 does not support SATA.
Here comes the stupidity, for a min I came up with the bright idea of using the CD drives power connector ( I now remember that I ruled this option earlier, I wish I remembered it all along) As there is always a current on this cable (when there is a power connection - for the HIFI mode to work ) I guess some static electricity effected my HD. Not having realised the HD is already affected, I swapped the cables as the HD connection cable is not long enough to keep 2 HDs in a steady state.
As a result both my HDs are now not working, when I tried the original master HD I was horrified to see a spark and some fume
I wish I never tried to use my old graphics card - which I wanted only for the DVI support. This led to CPU temperatures of average 70 degree celcius and when I ever I tried to use the PC properly I was had to turn it off due to extreme temperatures over 75 degree celcius.
All I was after is a troublefree smooth working nice looking PC, yet I am stuck now... I am both upset for the data I lost as well as hours I spend in trying to put this thing together. I will decide in the morning to return or keep the product. If I keep it the next challenge will be getting my external HD to run an OS as I need to save up again to buy a new HD, I was hoping my next HD would be a SATA one :(
This is definately a bitter lesson. Such a pity that with just a little more effort MSI could have really improved the profuct most are listed here but I want to summarise:
    1. before getting the new product out try fitting a new graphics card and a TV card and operate both for 2 hours... That is if you could fit them both in the first reason why you could not is the cables from power supply is unnecessarily long for supplying power to the board and unsuitably located. the best you could do is place them all infront of the cpu fan.
    2. It is really great to have detachable ODD and HD yet Floppy drive ( card reader ) bay is static
    3. a better location for CPU or card slots would have contributed to airflow far more.
Better close here... I am still not sure if positives of the product companates all the negatives.

Simply, be aware that the power cable for the CDRom is live most all the time that your backpanel power cord is plugged in. Its for the support of CD/MP3 in HI-Fi mode. If you shut down your system, and not unplug the power, and you try to connect or disconnect anything to the IDE cable, and you are using the power cable for the CD, you can cause static/surging on the component you are hooking up....
If you must hookup an alternate drive [slave] for data dumping/imaging etc. use a Y cable from the HDD power cable. It only activates when the PC power switch is utilized....

  • Mega 180 and Media Center III----looks perfect----is it??

I DON'T want to shell out $1000 for cheap HP/Compaq or whatever which includes Media Center Edition
But I DO like the look and features of Microsoft's Media Center Edition.
In the Manual for the MEGA 180-----Media Center III looks perfect for what I want.
Am thinking of a Mega 180 using onboard video, the MSI TV/Tuner Card, onboard SoundStorm---and a cheap Barton.  I already have 2 x 512 of NVidia recommended PC2700 RAM for use with the onboard and almost all other parts----but by the time I'm done----I'd be shelling out around $400
The manual makes everything look good "on paper"----but I see from this forum their are "issues".
Did/does MSI support the 651 model well??  Bios updates----utility and driver updates??
This thing looks like a tremendous alternative to a Microsoft Media Center Edition overpriced machine.  And I'm willing to do driver updates and Bios updates----heck, I love a challenge----I just don't like a product that lies about what it can really do.
    Worth it----or should I pass.....
    Thanks-----John

I believe that function is only for viewing the videos from the preview window to fullscreen. I don't think it enables/disables "stretch mode" but i'll try that tonight.
if it works i'll post it here. if not ... well .... same thing i guess

  • Cheap Camera Challenge with- a Barbie Camera

For those of you not familiar with the Cheap Camera Challenge, DigitalRev is a site that basically educates photographers. One idea that they try to communicate is that it is not about the equipment, it is about the photographer and their ability to create art from any tool they are given.
They have put toy cameras in the hands of great photographers with amazing results.
This time they handed a competant professional filmmaker a Barbie Camera with a 240p resolution, and told him he had to create a short film. It turned out a little silly and slightly adult themed, but some of the shots are really amazing. Stick around to the end of the video.
You might find this video worth your time.
For more about Philip Bloom, click here.

Years ago the use of cheap film cameras was popular for the same reasons they are used today as expressed in above post.
I guess you could say that the original Kodak Brownie cameras were an inexpensive way for lots of normal people to shoot stuff like vacation pictures and it was easy to do by following the instructions that came with the film and camera.
For a while the " Diana" camera was a popular challenge to artists and even became a fad for a while. The professional photographers would use the cheap Diana camera ( cost about 10 cents ) which was plastic with a plastic lens and was very easy to operate. It had a button you pushed and a leaf would kinda fly through the gate behind the plastic lens ( there was one spring like wire that operated the shutter ).
With film there is often a sheet of paper that comes in the box and it has info on it about how to use the film and process it and stuff like that. There are ( or at least there used to be ) pictures to show people how to expose the film.
Like there was a picture of
    1) the sun
    2) the sun with cloud
    3) a cloud
    4) rain
    Something like that...
And THEN below each picture was a number ...like F 11, F 8, F 5.6, F 4 ....so basically you looked at the picture and then at the world around you...and matched them.
So if it was sunny out you set your camera lens to F 11.
    Pretty simple....yipee !
So that was the " basics " of camera operation...  Now the other thing that was real BASIC was the choice of what to shoot...and how to frame it.  Nothing fancy about the Diana camera.. you basically looked through the platic viewfinder and pointed at something you thought was pretty and pressed the little plastic button.  Then you had to advance the film or else you would stay there forever and just keep getting multiple exposures !!!!  OMG.
I personally used my Diana camera so much that several bad things happened eventually.  For one thing the plastic lens fell off and landed in the dirt one day.  So I had to use elmo's glue and stick it back onto the camera.  That worked out fine.
Then light started leaking into the body through the seams of the plastic door where you load film. So I had to put black paper tape around the seams after loading the film ( which was 120 size ).  That worked out fine too.
To get more " professional " in my experiments with the cheapo camera I started to use a secret method of exposing and developing the film , in order to get a specific " look " in the final prints.  I could do this cause I had my own darkroom and enlarger and all that stuff at the time.
This is black and white now...
Here's the secret.  You overexpose one stop.  That means that if you see a sun shining in the real world, and you see F 11 under the picture of the sun on your film info sheet... you open up one stop to F 8.
This is fun because a person starts to actually THINK about things instead of just using camera features on fancy cameras.
For example, a person learns that from F 11 to F 8 is twice the amount of light. From F 8 to F 5.6 is twice the amount of light too.
With shutter speeds the relationship becomes clear between F stops and shutter speeds.  For example going from 1/250 to 1/125 is twice the amount of time.  Now here's where thinking in your head really gets cool...with cheapo camera.  Let's say a correct exposure is F 8 at 1/60
Cause now a person can see that when letting in half the amount of light ( from F 8 to F 11 ) you can change the shutter to 1/30 and you still have the correct exposure !  The difference is now the DOF from the changed F stop.  So the plot thickens as a cheapo camera teaches us these things if they aren't known already.
The Diana camera made things easier than all that stuff anyway. It only had ONE shutter speed ( I think it was 1/60 , I forget ). So there was no choice about playing with F stops and shutter speeds.
However ( back to my secret overexposure method now ) there is a way to under develop film to accomodate overexposed film... and the chemical used ( developer ) in the case of black and white, has nice paper info sheets telling you all kinds of stuff about the developer, developer times and temperatures and basically tells you so much stuff a normal human would have no interest in at all. It turns out that you can under develop film so that the overexposed film comes out pretty nice. My secret developer was " Rodinol " which is made in some foreign country.
It gives you really grainy negative but sharp images and whites kinda " glow " a little bit... it is really pretty !  Not " soft " as you might think...you sorta have to SEE the print to know what I mean.
All of this stuff has been introduced here in earlier threads and although we are now in the world of digital it is easy to translate the lessons learned on Diana platic still camera ( film ) to the current digital world of still cameras. It can also be applied to motion pictures if a person keeps in mind that the film motion picture camera is based on a 180 degree shutter...
That means at 24 FPS your shutter speed is 1/48th sec.  That is what some people refer to as " the film look ".  Changing F stop and iso and shutter speeds are all related and some of having a good understanding of those things is by using cheapo equipment and doing the thinking on your own. Also, the same basics apply regarding the framing of shots and choice of subject matter.
This image below is from the Diana camera.  I was in a pond when I took that pic, and I used my secret exposure / rodinol method. I was not bit by a snapping turtle , thank gawd.  The Diana camera was not water proof but I bet you $100.00 it would have floated if I dropped it in that pond.
That's the other good thing about cheapo cameras. They are disposable !

  • [Solved]Xorg 1.6 with nvidia 180.44 2D performance painfully slow

    Hi folks,
Since the latest upgrade of Xorg and Nvidia all screen refreshes have become visibly very slow. Anything that has to redraw the whole screen takes a full second and my cpu usage jumps to 15%. The wierd thing is that glxgears is getting 200fps and looks perfectly smooth. Direct rendering is enabled and the client and server versions of the driver match. There are no errors in the Xorg.0.log apart from warnings about ACPI
I am using an Nvidia 6200 in TwinView mode with 2 identical monitors.

I lowered the colour depth to 16bpp and it's a little bit faster on window refreshes. It's good enough to be usable but it's still annoying.

  • Mega 180 Temps

Let me start off by saying that the Mega 180 is a great idea for a product but unfortunately it is not finished.  MSI is using us as beta testers - at our expense.  I build computers for people as a side business and against my better judgement, I built a customer a Mega 180 based system and I've had nothing but problems with it and it's damaging my reputation.  But, OK enough of that.
One major problem with the Mega 180 is it's CPU and hard drive temp and here's what you can do to fix it.  First off, the CPU heat sink is nice and big and made of copper - very nice.  However, the underside of the sink (the part that touches the CPU) is absolutely aweful!  The bottom should be mirror smooth.  Mine looks like the surface of a record.  Therefore, you need to lap it.  Look this process up on the net to see exactly how to do it.  Once lapped and the bottom is mirror smooth and you can see your reflection, use ARTIC SILVER thermal grease (just a tiny bit) and put the sink back on.  Your CPU temp under load will be about 8 degrees cooler.  Next, replace the small fan on the cooler with a bigger one (make sure you use one that's sensored, like the one you're replacing).  Lastly, get some flexible ducting from the hardware store (plastic, not aluminum), attach one end over the sink's big fan and carefuly route the other end to the side of the case (may not be possible if you are using an AGP card) and position it so it sucks in outside air.  Now that your CPU is cooled with fresh air, you will see another 2 - 3 degree reduction of CPU temp.
Finally, the hard drive is way too hot.  I measured it with a IR temp meter after a full defrag and my jaw hit the ground when I saw how hot it was - 152 degrees F.  That type of temp will kill your hard drive.  Fix this by placing a fan inside the case (RAM side) blowing fresh air right onto the hard drive.  This brought the temp down significantly.  It also cooled other items too (CD drive, chipset).
The only downside to this is your system will be louder due to fan noise.  However you will have fewer system lock-ups and mystery reboots (caused by overheated components).
One last idea, if the case is just too cramped for you, remove the power supply, buy a new one and mount it outside the case on the back.  It doesn't look good but it sure frees up space and improves air flow (plus you'll have more power if you buy a higher watt supply).
    Peace!

    Hey cb31,
Even though this thread is about temps, I too think noise is the biggest problem with the Mega, and my current efforts are targeted at killing the constant background noise. My goal is the same as your's - I want to leave the computer on most of the time and not be bothered with it.
I'm proceeding slowly however, and so far I've only done the following:
-Replaced the 60mm Delta fan with a Papst of the exact same size. I found the Delta to be noisy, while others report that it's doing ok. Don't know about you... The Papst is really quiet and actually cools a little bit more effective, though that's a bonus feature! But on the overall it didn't have the effect I hoped for
-The smaller Delta fan (outtake side of heatsink) already is quiet enough, so doesn't need to be replaced on behalf of noise anyway...
-Took out the PSU and put White Lithium Grease in the fan for smoother operation since I figured it made a lot of noise. That didn't help much either... I'm thinking about replacing the PSU fan with something better, even though a lable on the back of the PSU states "W/ Noisekiller". It's still a no-name fan and can be improved upon.
Right now the loudest noise in my Mega doesn't seem to come from any fan at all, but rather from the hd. And it's not so much the actual noise from the unit as vibrations reverberating through the chassis. A common problem obviously, but there isn't any room for hd suspension systems in the Mega, so other actions are required here! I tried to slide in thin sheets of plastic between the drive and the cage, to act as silencers, but that didn't have any real effect as the cage touches the drive in several places, thus transfering the vibrations anyway. A new drive cage could do the trick, but I haven't gotten that far yet, and might not ever...
The Seagate Barracuda is considered to be a silent drive, so replacing it probably wouldn't help.
To conclude: If your fans are noisy, replace them or grease them for better operation, but you might not even hear the difference...
The major flaw seems to be the internal design of the Mega, and there's isn't much to be done about that, unless you're handy with a Dremel and sheets of metal.  I might be, but I will have to get back to you on that!
    Cheers!

  • Challenges while Upgrading from OBIEE 10g to 11g

    Hi Gurus,
This is Kiran again. This time I am back with the upgradation issues. We have a client which is currently on OBIEE 10g. All components are already configured in OBIEE 10g with client on RPD, Catalog and implemented all security levels for those.
Now the challenge is to upgrade all activities which we have configured in OBIEE 10g. I have seen lot of stuff online and understood how to upgrade from OBIEE 10g to OBIEE 11g by simply clicking on ua.bat file. But I am unable to understand the process how it is upgrading the securities and environments.
Can anyone help me out by providing necessary stuff I need to take care of before taking the decision to upgrade from OBIEE 10g to 11g.
And also please clear me whether we will have any challenges in upgrading process. If yes, then what kind of challenges we will face and what kind of necessary steps we need to implement to resolve it.
What kind of Architecture we need to follow?
    How Schedulers will get upgraded?
Please help me out with your real experiences (Not the online websites). Your response will be highly appreciated and it will help lot of OBIEE professionals who are in the process of upgradation.
Thanks in Advance to all OBIEE GURUS.
    Kiran

    Hi Valli,
There is really great information available in this link. But I would like to know whether any one faced any issues while upgrading from OBIEE 10g to 11g. Please do share us few issues....

  • Keyboard not disabling past 180 Degrees (Yoga 13)

The keyboard on my Yoga 13 is (apparently ouf of the blue) not disabling when I open the Yoga passed 180 degrees.  It doesn't shut off until the Yoga is nearly fully folded back on itself (tablet mode).  This is a big problem for me as I love using the Yoga in stand mode on my lap when sitting in my recliner.
    Any way to adjust this?

    hi slydog75,
    Thanks for Posting,
    I personally would suggest
Going into Device Manager and uninstall the Drivers under Sensors
Then Restart the computer the reopen device manager see If the sensors are back then try the Keyboard again
There is a similar discussion about this issue as well Please Check as some Suggest was able to fix this issue.

  • Quota deduction when EE has been inactive for more than 180 days / Advance quota days when employee does not have enough balance

    Dear experts,
We have two requirements regarding to the "Anual leave" quota.
    1. Quota reduction when employee is inactive for more than 180 days
    2. Advance quota days when employeee does not have enough balance
We have in place an "Anual Leave" quota related to a calendar year period, that gets generated dialy in time evaluation. This quota gets the employee entitlement from a set of rules that stored the corresponding balance in a period time type, that is the one that we defined in the customizing. This is working fine. The problems start when we try to incorporate the other two requirements.
Regarding the first requirement, if the employee has been inactive for more than 180 days in a calendar year due to unpaid leave, we need to start quota reduction as follow,
First, we need to clear the balance that was calculated above in the schema.
Then, we need to calculate one leave day for every 20 days worked till the end of the year, considering as such, everyday the employee is expected to work, except days on which the employee has been absent on unpaid leave.
For the second requirement we created a manual quota call "Advance Anual Leave". So, if the employee, wishes to take 20 working days holiday, but in his/her Anual Leave quota has only 10 days available, we have to create an "Advance Anual Leave" quota manualy for 10 days. When the quota for next year gets generated, we need to deduct these advanced 10 days from it. This deduction should stop the year after.
The problem we are finding with these two requirements is that, due to the Anual Leave quota gets generated dialy, we can't get the balance right.
    Thanks in advance!
    Kind regards,
    Alex

  • Payroll Challenge

    Hello Payroll Experts!!
I am calling it Challenge because whoever I spoke to hasnu2019t given me a clear answer, and most of the time it has been u201Cnot possibleu201D.
    Logic:
    1.     There is a Wage Type (which is defined as neither Payment nor Deduction). Lets call it W1
    2.     W1 has following settings related to classes:
    a.     Processing Class 1: Assignment to valuation bases = 0 (Wage type is not included in a valuation basis)
    b.     Processing Class 20: Cumulation and storage at end of gross part = 1 (Transfer unchanged)
    c.     Cumulation Class 1: Total gross amount = Unchecked
    d.     Cumulation Class 10: Net payments/deductions = Unchecked
    e.     Reset all classes have either default or Zero value.
    Explanation:
We are defining a Wage W1 which neither adds nor deducts the salary of an employee. However, I want W1 to be processed in Payroll and finally when I do the posting it should be able to post to respective G/L account.
    Reason for activity:
Client wants to record the amount of W1 in HR, so that later a report can be generated. However, W1 is not a payment or deduction. It is a Cost (Training Cost, Visa Cost etc), which has to be linked to an employee.
I agree there is a work around to this issue; however, I am more interested in knowing if the above logic is right and will I be able to get the desired result of posting the Wage Type value to G/L Account, without making payment or deduction to employee payroll?
I hope you enjoy this case study as much as I am enjoying to research on it.
    Thanks
    Yash

    Hi Arti
You and I are thinking on the same lines. I was also thinking of a logic where I create a WT only for recording purpose in HR and not integrate it with Payroll/FI posting; that way we can at least win half battle.
Excluding the wages from Infotype 2010
I wish it can also be integrated with Payroll posting; that way I can reduce the burden on my FI/CO fellow partner and it will look like a full-fledge solution.
Logically, I think it can still work.
    1.     Store the Value of WT in HR (Say WT1=5000)
    2.     Define the property of WT as u201CDo not add/delete WT1 in Grossu201D
    3.     Include WT1 in Payroll Processing as W1=Transfer Unchanged
    4.     At the end of Payroll Processing W1 will hold its original value; W1=5000
    5.     Post W1=1000 to Symbolic Account and then to G/L Account.
What do you say? May be I will try this during our realization phase. Currently I am overloaded with BBP work, and also do not have access to Test/QA Server.
I am not sure at what level you are working but I wanted to tell you u201CYou are good!u201D. Also, I believe itu2019s a blessing to have good people around you.
    Thanks

    Hi,
A couple of problems we've had is Designer setting strict scoping on by default (it you added dynamic properties to JavaScript form objects as the garbage collection changed) and the way we used 'proto' elements (or form objects that show up under "reference nodes" in the hierarchy)

  • TV-Out on Mega 180 (Composite)

    Hi there,
I just received my Mega 180 some days ago. So far I'm really satisfied. I just have one problem an perhaps you could help me.
I at first used the S-Video out from Mega to my S-Video-Scart-In of my TV. That worked without problems.
Now I wanted to use the Composite out instead of S-Video out from the Mega 180. So I connected a composite-adapter to the S-Video port and connected a composite cable to it. Now my TV only shows the picture black/white.
I know that this is an issue connected with S-Video. So I changed in nvidia-driver the automatic detection to manual (composite). But whenever I change this, I just get a complete black screen. I tried this with many nvidia driver versions. All the same.
And now the really misteryous thing: when I de-install the nvidia driver (graphic) and start windows with standard vga-mode, I have a colored picture with the mentioned composite out without having changed anything.
Anyone has an idea? Thanks in advance.
    My Hardware:
    - MSI Mega 180
    - Athlon Sempron 2800
    - WinTV 350 PVR
    - 512 MB
    - onBoard graphicscard

  • QuickTime Pro - I am trying to find a way to retrieve my Quick Time Pro code and re-register it but, because I bought it more than 180 days ago, I cannot find the code anywhere, or any way to get an answer from Apple's website.

I have been going round in circles, trying to resolve this
I bought the MPEG2 component from the Apple UK store on 4th July 2010. I still have the email and the order number but they are no use to me because it is more than 180 days since I ordered this from them.
My operating system got corrupted and I had to do a clean install, then a return of the relevant files, folders and applications from my Time Machine. With that should have been my MPEG2 component for QuickTime Pro but it refuses to register.
I need it to convert my videos taken on my older video camera, which is a Sony, using mpeg2. I cannot look at any of these videos any more, which is deeply irritating. Still lots of editing to do.
I think it is a bit off if I have to buy it all over again
    Any ideas?
