Challenger for a serious troubleshooter - shuffles thru songs...

For some reason the Ipod will play thru an album or shuffle song lists but will not acutally play songs. All of the song info comes up on the screen but it just changes to the next song without playing. I also cannot get the ipod to reset. When plugged in to usb(pc), permanent "do not disconnect comes up". ipod is also not identified on itunes. Ipod is identified as a computer drive though. Drive contains folders called :notes, contacts, calender and a notepad file called bootex. no other files. If you try to open file you ge error message foldername is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. Bootex file reads:

may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended
that you continue.

(I just discovered this message and will run scandisk. Message came up when rebooting system after downloading ipod updater-thought it was referring to hard drive)
There is music on this ipod but no other stuff. Unit is 5 months old with little use. Not dropped. Was working fine, ear plug was pulled out while playing (on purpose)and plugged back in while playing. I may have turned it off then back on and hit shuffle then noticed it wasn't working properly. Have not tried to restore to original settings but that will but next on the list.
Has anyone ever experienced this?
Thanks
Bart

Here's what I suggest:
1) Copy the (hidden) Music directories over to your PC (assumes you can mount as a USB drive)
2) Restore/reformat your Mini via the "standalone" iPod updater (don't do it via iTunes)
3) Recover as many of the mp3's as possible (some will have unrecognizable names) and reload them into iTunes
4) Properly update you iPod
You may not be able to reload ALL of your music (depending on how much was "bought" and how much you "ripped"), but it will get you going again. I buy very little off of iTunes (most I make myself from CD's), so I actually used some of my backup recently when I upgraded my Mini.

Might not help. but you have to be in the "library" to edit them. Maybe you are trying to change in the "Ipod" section.
Got to check the easy things first, right? Hope this solves it.

  • ITunes shuffles thru songs, will not play music on multiple devices

I cannot play music from my iPhone 4 for a long time now.  Just set up a new iPad mini with same Apple ID and the same thing is going on with it!
When I go to the music app and try to play a song it hesitates, then continuously cycles through all of my songs without playing anything.  Please help!

I read something about trying to agree to new terms and conditions and that would fix it, but their only solution to get to the part where you agree to the new terms and conditions was to download a new app, then it would ask you.  Tried that, didn't get asked to agree to new terms.

  • HELP!!  iTunes causes computer to hang up when shuffling through songs.

When having songs on shuffle play, my entire computer hangs up for a few seconds while iTunes is shuffling through songs. I have tried everything, from completely uninstalling (going into system32 or whatever that is) and reinstalling, to turning off Sound Enhancer (that fixed the song-skip when scrolling thru playlist), to turning off Crossfade (fixes the problem for about 4 songs), but nothing seems to work. I got really mad at it today when it made my computer hang up for 4 minutes when changing songs. My computer is kind of old, but it's not a total dinosaur (P4 2.26, 1.25 Gigs of ram, sufficient free hard disk space, etc). Is there a solution to this problem, or am I just going to have to use some other music playing program?

Try getting rid of that Shwicon2k process, if it's on your PC. It's multimedia card reader software. You can always put it back. It might be causing a conflict.

  • My ipod touch 4th gen stops shuffling at song 12 repeat and shuffle bars are blue - what could be wrong

my ipod touch 4th gen stops shuffling at song 12, and the music stops all together, does not go to next song - I am playing my ipod on my Bose system  -  the repeat and shuffle bars remain blue - it only occurs on this particular playlist -Note:  I created this playlist on my ipad - the first ipad out - with icloud it is on my ipod as well -  I am totally baffled - and have checked settings, etc - do you think i need to connect to computer to sync?  Please help

While playing any song on your iPod, tap the artwork to bring up the scrubber bar and additional controls. On the left hand side is a option for repeat. You want to make sure this icon is white (meaning it is set to Off). If it isn't tap it either one or two times to change its current setting.
    Any luck there?

  • Is iPod Shuffle corrupting songs or what?

I have this 2th gen iPod Shuffle I've been using for about four+ years. My problem is that some songs now sound corrupted. One, for instance, plays a few seconds then starts to make noises at some points. Others play a few seconds then jump to the middle then jump to the end or near and suddenly are finished.
I deleted the first example song above from iTunes (Windows) and copied a "working version" of it, that is, without the noises. But when I played it with my iPod Shuffle it was again with the very same noises.
What is wrong? Is iPod Shuffle corrupting songs or what?
BTW, is there a way to fix stuff like that in iTunes or other Apple software? Is some sort of defragmentation possible?
TIA for your attention and help.

Try to connect your iPod to computer, open iTunes, select your iPod and click Restore (the process will take some time). If songs still sound corrupted after the restore, most likely iPod flash memory is bad due to wear.

  • My iPod shuffle erases songs when I plugg it back into my computer after I erase the songs I just put in it?

My iPod shuffle erases songs when I plugg it back into my computer after I erase the songs I just put in it?

That's how it is supposed to work.  The library on your Shuffle is set to mirror your iTunes library on your PC or Mac.  So if you add some music and configure to sync to the Shuffle, removing it from iTunes, would also remove it from your Shuffle.
The only way to avoid this is to set up the Shuffle for manual management. See the appropriate section in this Apple support document on how to manually manage your iPod's contents.

  • ITunes shuffling my songs on my computer every 5 seconds. Need help.

I am having a major problem with My iTunes music shuffling my songs every 5 seconds when I'm not doing anything. Any help would be great. Thank you.

You say, "My computer will not reconise the device."  Then you say, "It says sync has been completed but there is nothing on the shuffle."  Those two statements seem to contradict, because if the shuffle is not being recognized by iTunes, how can it say it has completed syncing?  If it is doing a sync when connected, the shuffle is being recognized by iTunes...
    have new leads.
By "leads," does that mean the USB cable.  If so, did you get the USB docking cable for the 2nd gen shuffle? The USB cable for the 3rd and 4th gen shuffle will not work, because the connector is different.
If you are using the latest iTunes, make sure the sidebar is visible.  From the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.  In the sidebar, the shuffle does not appear under the heading DEVICES?

  • Automator, iTunes won't shuffle first song

I have a remote computer running iTunes playing a shuffled playlist. I wrote an Automator task to reshuffle the playlist and start it over again. The Workflow is simple:
Get Specified iTunes Items (for a playlist with one blank song)
    Play iTunes Playlist
Get Specified iTunes Items (with the desired playlist)
    Play iTunes Playlist (with Shuffle)
I found that I need to play another playlist in order for the desired playlist to be reshuffled. Otherwise, it picks up where it left off. So the first half of the workflow does that.
Here's the curious thing, the playlist gets shuffled for all but the first song which is always the same! If I do it manually in iTunes, it shuffles fine. Using automator, the first song stays the same no matter how many times I run the shuffle automator.
If I restart iTunes or even if I play a few other playlists manually, it shuffles once, then has the same first song problem for the subsequent runs.
    Any ideas?

    Is it a smart playlist?
If it is, you could try:
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=reshufflesmart
Or you could just set that playlist as a "source" in party shuffle. And just have automator play iTunes Playlist "Party Shuffle".

  • Shuffling playlist songs

I recently created a new playlist of my holiday songs. For some reason I am unable to get the songs in that particular playlist to shuffle in either itunes or on my ipod classic. I even recreated it as a smart playlist and they still won't shuffle. I can get the songs in my other playlists to shuffle (both itune created lists and my lists). I don't know what I am doing wrong.

    Hello adlibb58,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
    To shuffle a playlist:
Go to Settings -> Shuffle and select to shuffle "By songs" Then choose a song from the playlist and you should be good to go.
If the other playlists are working as normal, make sure you are following the exact steps as you did for them to try and shuffle the songs in your holiday playlist.

  • ITunes is shuffling my songs in Album View without shuffling on

In album view, itunes is shuffling certain songs for no reason - it wasn't doing this a few days ago. I DO NOT have shuffling ticked, and itunes only seems to shuffle songs that are grouped together in the "Unknown Album" section of each artist, all of which have no track number. I do not want to assign track numbers to every song in this group. Strangely, it doesn't shuffle songs in named albums. Please does anyone have an answer to this?
Look at this example below. If I play the first song in the Unkown Album section "The Beginning Is The End Is...", then the next song itunes plays is the first song of the Album "Gish": "I Am One".
However, if I start with the song "Eye", then order goes:
Eye -> The End Is The Beginning Is The End -> [Untitled] -> The Beginning Is The End Is -> "Gish" Album...
    HELP!!!

As soon as I read this message I did a cartoon style 'boggle take' - you know, the eyeballs telescope in and out several times. I had no idea you could delete songs from a smart list. Indeed, when in the name of science I tried to do so on my Mac, I couldn't.
So I can give you no advice on why/what is happening. But leg me suggest this. Make your smart list and then create a new normal list. Drag the music in the smart list into the normal (empty) list. Now delete the music from the normal list and sync that. It will, at least, allow you to edit your play list without deleting songs.

The music app keeps shuffling my songs despite me turning off the shuffle sign...whats going on?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • "Podcasts"  vs.  "All songs"/"Shuffle all songs"

When I just shuffle all songs on my ipod the podcasts are also included; Because most of my podcasts are long talks (e.g. BBC news)it's very annoying when you only want to listen to music and you don't have any hands free(when i'm sporting, on the bike etc.etc.)
I remember this was due to an update of Apple; before this update, the podcasts were presented seperately from the "all song"-list.
My question is: is there a possibility in iTunes to have a choice, if you want to include/exclude your podcasts within your "all songs"-list?
    I thank you in advance,
    mm

I don't know if this works, but there is a checkmark for "Skip when shuffling" on each individual podcast's Options page. Just select a podcast, control+click and choose "Get Info", select the "Options" tab and see if "Skip when shuffling" is checked.

  • I paid for and tried to download the song "Cryin" by Aerosmith but it won't let me download the song each time I go to the store and click on available downloads, it looks like it's downloading and I get an error message that the file is corrupt

I paid for and tried to download a song from itunes but the song won't dowload! When I got to store and click on available downloads it looks like it's downloading but I keep getting a message that the file is corrupt.

I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not downloading properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the entry, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.
(Not entirely sure what happens after you click that link, but fingers crossed it should be relatively straightforward.)
