Chance of repair?

So this is an on going problem with my iphone.. i plug it in and it says the device isnt supported for charging. Anyway no matter what i try it always says it so i cant charge it (iv gotten lucky in the past but its no longer working at all)..
so iv filed a repair order thingo and im gonna send it for repairs, the only problem is my phone has a crack in the glass and im just wondering if this will effect me getting a repair under the warranty? i under stand its damaged but this could in no way effect it charging so i dont see why this should effect it.

Fact is, it doesn't matter what anyone here tells you regarding whether your phone will or won't be covered by warranty. No one here works for Apple or is in a position to make that determination. I understand you're looking for re-assurance, but the re-assurance you get is immaterial. In my experience, Apple has always tended to favor the user when it comes to warranty issues, unless there are overt signs of user abuse. Broken glass is not covered by warranty. Your post does not indicate if the front or rear panel is cracked, or even if this is an iPhone 4. Apple will most likely not just address the charging issue without also addressing the glass issue. If I were in your shoes, I'd make the two hour trip to an Apple store...you always stand a better chance of resolving issues, in your favor, in a face-to-face meeting. Good luck.

I am using blckberry  9800 for the last 18 months. Now it is not woring lock and unlock .I contact all dealers in India and they told they are unable to service and repair since I purchased from out side India.I purchased from Dubai .What shall I do please

No matter where you purchased it, it's beyond the one-year warranty.  To repair it would probably cost more than it would to replace it with a new phone (even if it's a used phone and new to you).
    I hope that helps you.

  • Failure to start up and no chance to repair  nor verify disk

    Hi there,
My problem is that I cannot restart my laptop MacBook Pro 17" 2.16 with OSX 10.5.1
All I get is a the loading screen and when I insert leopard disc & hold down c key to repair the disk or verify, it won't let me giving me errors:
    Invalid node structure
    Volume checked failure
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
I have search the net and I have tried reseting the VRAM etc... but stil nothing!
And I am in deep trouble as I have a gig tomorrow night and I have to Dj with my laptop.
I have my iTunes library well organize and I would love to keep it like that if possible as I am afraid of the worst coming.
    PLEASE, PLEASE, HELP HERE!!
    THANKS IN ADVANCE...
    Jose Hita

From what I've read you may need to use a program such as Disk Warrior to do a Repair Disk. I presume that those error messages came when you opened Disk Utility from your Leopard instal disk. In the time frame you have I am guessing you would need to borrow a computer & try to get copies of your iTunes library from the hd. Do you have a backup?
Perhaps a feasible solution if there is no other would be to buy an external drive, preferably firewire, and instal a new system from the Leopard installer on this. You may need to reformat the external drive to Apple's specs using Disk utility from the Leopard disk. If after doing this it can see enough of your internal drive you could copy the relevant files across and run the iTunes from the external.
Startup from an external is achieved by holding the option key, then selecting the OS of your external drive when the grey window comes up with the selection option. This process should not be inhibited by the internal drive problems.

  • Any chance to repair hundreds of aliases in iPhoto

In my iPhoto preferences the [ ] Copy Photos to iPhoto checkbox was unchecked.
Anything worked fine (events, albums, slideshows) with hundreds of images - util my HD has been replaced.
but now: every time I try to view an image in iPhoto it informs me that this image cannot be found and wants me to locate that image. A pain!
Digging into the iPhoto Library packet I found the folder 'Originals' filled with aliases in subfolders. Those aliases seem to be invalid.
My question: is there any solution (Automator | AppleScript | ...) that can be used to "heal" those broken aliases?
Any help would be great! Thank You!

found a solution in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10795704&#10795704
At the moment FileBuddy is searching my Images folder for 1.635 targets and I hope it can re-connect them.
After some minutes it presented me a list of 38 aliases I had to attach manually (perhaps some settings in FileBuddy could be set to skip that).
It seems that my iPhoto collection is useable again.

  • Any chance of iMac G5 first generation repair program be active again?

Any possibility that the iMac G5 first generation repair program will be active again?
I had no idea about this program since I was away overseas for few years and by the time
I return in 2009 and used my iMac G5 again, it started to have problems with display and then later the power supply I think?
Now I have just left the iMac G5 alone and let it sit on my desk like a display only and unable to use it thinking to fix it will be way too expensive.
Then today decided to check online to see if there are other solutions other than throwing it away as a garbage,
I found there was actually an extended program and I missed it!!
Because of this encounter I disliked using apple and reluctant to buy any more of apple products due to many limitations and this
extremly expensive iMac G5 I bought in 2005 and barely used it.
Hopfully there are other solutions to this old iMac G5 I have that I cannot use any more along with the expensive Final Cut Pro ver 4.5
studio suite I bought that only works with it.

There is no chance the repair extension progrm will be renewed, but call Customer Support and explain the situation. You might get lucky and find someone who's having a very good day --  or not -- who will OK the repairs. Be polite; don't start by ranting about how you won't buy any more Macs.
But I wouldn't bet the ranch on it. The program ended three years ago, in the fall of '08, I believe. If you had reported the problem in '09 when it started, you might have had a much better chance.
Perhaps one needed to have registered the computer -- I don't know --- but I don't believe any of the affected owners, registered or not, were notified by Apple of the program. You can try making the point that you were never notified of the program's existence and therefore had no way of taking advantage of it.
The iMac G5 is by now a "vintage" Mac, and I don't even think the Apple Stores will work on it. Maybe an AASP will, but the parts they get for it from Apple, if any are still availble, may be very dicey, anyway.
There are a few places that may still work on these for far less than Apple or an AASP.

  • Repair vs replace option when MBR is probably bad?

I could use some assistance getting the Thinkvantage & F11 buttons working  again.  Fn and Thinkvantage buttons work correctly when booted into Windows as does the R&R software, but will not go into the recovery partition when booting the machine.
The blue Thinkvantage button will only show a "Startup Interrupt Menu" with three options: pressing ESC to resume startup normally, F1 to enter the BIOS or F12 to load the boot menu.
I ran the MBR repair floppy  (the CD ISO I found reported errors on download & burn with 2 different programs), but it said that the MBR might not be from Lenovo and did apparently did nothing.  Should I try the replace option instead of repair?  What will that do and will it affect my disk partitions?
I did repartition the C drive into multiple C, D, & E drives, but did not change or move the service partition which I can see in disk management.    This was all working until I booted the machine with an old drive in the SATA ultrabay.  Windows went wacko getting drive letters confused and kind of merging the boot from both drives.  I got that fixed and the preboot environment is all thats left to resolve.
    Thanks a lot

Everyone is different, and sometimes people have sentimental attachments to systems that override what makes economic sense to most people... Most techs I know use a 50% threshold. If repairing is going to cost more than 50% of a new system, it's probably not worth fixing.
USUALLY in these cases systems are 2-3 years old or more, so people can at least take comfort in the fact that they're getting a better overall system. In your case, you don't have that, so the threshold for repair vs replace should maybe be more around 75%. But from some of the liquid damaged systems I've seen, and estimates I've written up... I don't think you'll have that big of an issue making a decision. Bare minimum they'll probably have to replace the logic board. There's also a good chance the display is damaged, and replacing the battery after liquid damage is generally a good idea, just to be safe. There's a good chance the repair costs would exceed the cost of a new system.
And for the record, you did about all you could given the circumstances. The damage was done the moment the liquid came in contact with the circuitry. There's really nothing you can do with liquid spills except clean things up as best you can and hope for the best.

  • Photo corrupted, repair software for MacBook Pro?

I have transferred photos from an old PC to a MacBook Pro.  I noticed in the PC some of the photos are corrupted which ends up the same on my Mac after I transferred them.  They are photos for a large family book that I am working on.
I need to know if there is (preferably free) software to repair/restore photos for a Mac?
Any thoughts are appreciated before I back up my Mac pictures/files on an external hard-drive.  I don't want to lose any of the photos.
    Thanks!

    Linc Davis wrote:
Do not waste money on Disk Warrior. First of all, it doesn't fix corrupt files at all, ever. It recovers damaged volume directories. Second, if you have adequate backups, you'll never need to recover a damaged directory, so you'll never need Disk Warrior. In this situation, it will do you no good at all. Your only hope is to restore the damaged files from a backup. If you don't have one, there's nothing to do. You will inevitably lose all data that isn't backed up, sooner or later.
Linc, Cannot argue with that at all.
I have an enormous number of support calls where Disk Warrior resolved or even saved a corrupted drive or RAID. Almost always this is necessitated only because there were insufficient backups in place. And Linc is absolutely correct, DW does not do anything except repair and modify directories. I have owned Disk Warrior for 10 years or more and have not used it for more years than I can remember. I maintain backups of everything and always find it easier to revert to a backup than to attempt repairs of a problem RAID/drive/directory/set of files.
In your case, I would not rule it out if you owned it, but would not spend money on it now. If you cannot go to the source PC and try to recover these files, then your copying corrupted file to a different operating system has negligible chance of repairing them.

  • Using Disk Utility to repair disk not working

Hi, I don't notice any issues with my Mac but I would like to check and repair disk errors anyway. I inserted the install disk that came with my Mac, pressed the C Key while the computer restarted, afterewards I get a menu showing my mouse. What did I do wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated

Without using the correct software shutdown and normally being able
to quit open and running applications, utilities or the System, there is
a chance that repairable issues may result. And in some cases, there
may be a fair chance of damages to the OSX and applications.
Problems with the Directory and other drive/storage files could be
damaged and they may need repairs; if Disk Utility can't do them
then other tools should be used. Disk Warrior can help in some areas
where other utilities cannot do the same job or do it as well. Specialized
tools and some more general ones allow you to restore functions in a
computer's hard drive through various means.
If you do not have a full backup of your computer's hard disk drive, and
then do not have the affordable luxury of wiping the damaged drive,
zeroing it from the booted Installer's Disk Utility options, and then being
able to clone back a complete computer clone from an external hard
disk drive, then you have to see about trying to repair the damage in
the only drive you have. You can be ready ahead of time, to choose one
or another, or both paths. Options are good when you have & control them.
Be sure your third-party disk utilities are compatible with your computer's
OS X version and also with the hardware configuration. Given there are
some computers not running the latest OS X due to non-support, the
utility chosen has to also match with attention to detail, to avoid problems.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Still photos in PRE 12 and output to HD DVD for TV

    Hi,
I was using Final Cut Express 4 HD on my old iMac but bought a new late 2013 iMac and learned that FCE will not run on Mavericks (and if you install it you will destroy your OS X plugin manager without any chance to repair it)!
Ok FC Pro X is far way to expensive for me right now, as I just use the app to build nicer photo slide shows. iMove has just a single track and therefore I'm already on the limits. Ok this is where PRE 12 comes into the game and so far I love what I see in the editor. But when it comes to exporting and sharing my work for Full HD TV I'm more than disappointed.
Here is what I use. I exported all my images with 1920x1080 pixels as JPG, max quality with 72dpi and they are looking great on my iMac.
When I import the stills into PRE they are OK when I see them in the editor. I switched off the still optimization feature and set the highest quality to render the preview.
When looking at the clip on my iMac in the editor is ok so far, but at full screen the images are unsharp, blurry and have ghosting and artefacts. Well I could live with that when it would only be the preview but exporting the video a DVD with Full HD the result is as the preview, images are unsharp, blurry showing artefacts and ghosting. And I can't make it better by manipulating the settiings in the DVD dialog. Maybe I'm doing it wrong!?
The only way to make my photos in the video looking tack sharp and brilliant as they are is when I use MPEG format with Full HD settings and look at the video with quick time.
Why don't I get the same result when burning the video on DVD? Any hints?
In regards to the DVD quality I had no problems with FCE 4 HD! And the images (still photos) are the same footage I used to compare the output!
Secondly I just use the PRE 12 trial version, hope that this is not the reason? The annoying "always on" banner saying that it is a trial version is already something I dislike, but what I experience and makes it even worse is that PRE 12 is crashing again and again on different steps I take, sometimes when I change a setting, sometimes when I scrub, sometimes when selecting a fade, sometimes when importing footage and other step....
With all this the disappointing quality on DVD's and the many crashes I can't find a lot of arguments right now to make the trial a full version?!
Cheers and many thanks for help!
    Happy New Year!

First, I want you to assure that you are not bothered by pile ups of preview files, conformed audio, and conformed video files. If these files are in the default location, please check wherever they may be in Premiere Elements 12 Mac (I am strictly an Elements Windows user)....
Adobe Premiere Elements Preview Files Folder....preview files
Media Cache Folder (cfa and pek files)....conformed audio
    Media Cache (.mcdb files)....conformed video
Check Edit Menu/Preferences/Scratch Disks to assure that all the scratch disk categories are directed to a hard drive save location with adequate free space to accept them.
Now for the project itself...set the Premiere Elements 12 project preset manually, using
    File Menu/New/Project
    PAL
    DSLR
    1080p
    DSLR 1080p25
Before you close out of there, make sure that you have a check mark next to "Force Selected Project Setting on This Project". Then, when you enter the Premiere Elements workspace, import your source media into the project with Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets.
Render the Timeline and then decide if the image quality is impoved. You might explore applying a very small Sharpen effect to the images. Have the others taken you through the drill of evaluating your computer video card and its driver version?

Let us determine what we have at this stage and then we can decide if any improvement on the path to PAL DVD-VIDEO Widescreen on DVD disc.

  • My MacBook died. Again. Am I the only one SERIOUSLY regretting my purchase?

Okay. Almost two weeks ago, I turned my MacBook off only to discover that, an hour later, it would not turn on any more. At all. I took it in. The man was suprised by my issue, saying that it was one he had not yet encountered. They kept my MacBook (which I had taken quite a liking to up till that point, so the separation was tough) for five days. I got it back last Saturday. They replaced the logic board. I took it home, and it powered up no problem. Then it told me to update the firmware. I did as it said. But when it restarted to complete the update, it started having the "vertical line" issue. So. At the advice of a few knowledgeable persons on this forum, I took to zapping my PRAM every time I needed to start up. Annoying, but tolerable. I gritted my teeth and prayed that Apple would release some sort of patch to fix this problem that, apparently, several other people are experiencing as well...
Yesterday, I took my MacBook down to my Aunt & Uncles house, intending to show it off and convince them (as I quite nearly did with my cousin a couple weeks ago) that they should abandon the silly Windows machines in favour of the more sophisticated Apple (I am the lone black sheep in my family full of PC-people). When I arrived, however, much to my dismay, my MacBook (once again) showed zero signs of life when I pressed the power button. Full charge on the battery. I even tried plugging it in, to make sure. No response. I have only had it back for a week, and it's already screwed up beyond use again.
I am not pleased. At all. The worst part? I leave for school in three weeks. What the **** do I do when it ceases functioning while I'm trying to do all my classwork on it? Argh.

I'm going to see what they say when I take it in
tomorrow morning, but I know that Apple generally
doesn't just hand over a new machine past two
weeks... And I've had mine for about eight now. If
problems persist, though, I will have to start being
assertive and make sure someone makes it right...
The interesting thing is... both times it's stopped
working have been immedeately before I show it off to
someone of a more windowsy persuasion... so...
really... it's already hurting apple from a PR
perspective... perhaps if I explain it from this
    angle, they'll be cooperative...
You need to call Customer Relations (1-800-APL-CARE #3), complain that you have the same problem and kindly ask them for a replacement. I called them about mine and they told me I had to give them a chance to repair it and they would go from there. They were really quite nice. So far mines working, but if it dies again, I have a feeling they would give me a new one. Apple has always resolved any issues I've had to my satisfaction. You just need to keep cool and be patient.

As I said - look whether your original file is damaged or not. If not, I wouldn't change it and find out what in your system makes it sound like it's clipping.
Good sound file, with volume maxed out. No need to change anything.
The same song clipped - no chance to repair.

  • Hard drive died, but do i have a battery issue also?

    Hello,
Well, my powerbook has been acting funny for the last few months and I think it finally died today. I've been doing weekly bootable backups on a smartdisk firelite 100GB external hard drive. Yesterday my computer was really slow, so today I updated the backup. Afterwards, I tried running disk repair in the disk utility on my internal hard drive, but it froze while doing that and I was forced to hit the kill switch. When I started it again I got the mini-folder with a blinking question mark. Luckily, I think the bootable backup works (although I've had issues with that drive mounting in the past) and for now it looks like I have all my files and applications. I tried running disk repair on the internal hard drive by got the error message: "invalid B-tree node size, volume check failed, underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)".
My question though is about how HOT my powerbook had been running lately. I've been using a notebook cooler with a fan, but it's still very hot to the touch after a while above the keyboard and sometimes I've noticed it's hot on the lower right side (under my left wrist). The adapter on the AC plug/cord setup gets hot also. I'm wondering if the heat was because the hard drive was dying, OR if the hard drive died because of the heat? (Note: I checked my battery serial number a long time ago and it wasn't part of the mac recall.)
I want to get a new hard drive to install (at BestBuy or some other place I guess). I'll look around on the list for recommendations, but I'm open to suggestions. I don't know if it's worth wiping the hard drive I have now and restoring it from the backup, or just assume it's dead. I don't want to get a new hard drive and find out I have a battery overheating issue instead.
    Thanks for your help!
    Lisa

    Lisa:
Before you purchase and install a new HDD, just hold a minute.
Great that you have a bootable backup of your HDD. Good thinking. Are you able to boot the computer from the external firewire HDD? (From a cold start, turn on external HDD, hit computer power button and immediately after chime hold down Option key. Select external HDD in screen and click right pointing arrow.)
When you ran Disk Utility, did you notice the S.M.A.R.T Status? If it says Verified, there is still hope. If it says failing, we'll need to find you a new HDD.
+"invalid B-tree node size, volume check failed, underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)".+
This indicates serious directory issues for which you will need a utility like Disk Warrior, Tech Tool Pro, or DriveGenius. Take a look at Disk Utility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing a volume for details about the issue.
One of the above utilities has a good chance of repairing the directories. However, there is an even chance that the drive may be too damaged to be repaired. However, you won't know that until after you have run one of those utilities.
Your computer will support a 2.5" (P)ATA/IDE HDD up to 160 GB. Here are some HDDs that will work for you at OWC. If you are handy with a screw driver and have the time and patience you can probably install it yourself using these step by step directions from ifixit. If you need to install a new HDD, and think you would like to try it yourself, post back for additional tips.
    Cheers.

  • Tiger randomly stopped allowing my External Hard drive to mount and...

Hello, I have been using an External Hard Drive (1 terabyte Seagate, new) for a couple months if not a year by now for saving movies, and all of my iTunes on it. Its been working wonderfully. However it recently stopped being able to mount citing invalid hard drive and gives me the options of either eject, ignore, or initialize. Im not sure what to do. And also my computer has been acting funny every since the day it started. I will walk you through it step by step.
July 6th I was surfing the web and unfortunetly clicked on a link that aparently contained a trojan. Or atleast thats what my Antivirus notified me of. I had downloaded the trojan some how without a pop up or anything telling me I was downloading anything. (using safari) So i ran a virus scan and saw one virus was in my system and that it couldnt be deleted or repaired by my antivirus program, Im working on getting rid of that but at the time I had my Seagate 1 terabyte external hard drive attached via fire wire to my Macbook. It was working then.
Later that day I unplugged my hard drive and took my laptop around a little bit, nothing unusual. Then when i came back later that night I tried plugging in my hard drive and a pop up stated that the hard drive was unable to mount and I could either eject, ignore, or initilize. I tried may different routes, restarting, letting it all rest, etc. And in Disk Utility i try to verify the disc and it says its unable to and needs repairs. So I try repairing the disc and it says unable to due to an error.
Then yesterday I went to my applications and noticed none of my applications are there anymore. These applications were saved on the internal hard drive so it was very odd to me. However i can still use spotlight to find and open my apps.
My question is, What can I do to allow my external hard drive to mount? I dont figure it is the trojan on my system but could it be? If so how would I fix it? Im mostly worried about getting the data off the external hard drive then I can reformat it. Or if theres a way to just get it back to normal without reformatting Id love to hear it. As for the applications missing and the trojan on my internal hard drive I can fix that, at the very least Ill just reboot my system with my original OS Disc and just start fresh, its about time anyways.
But please. If anyone has ever had their external hard drive just stop mounting and figured out what to do I would be ever so grateful to hear how you did so. The hard drive itself isnt damaged, its not making any unusual sounds. Whenever i plug it into the computer it acts like normal (turning on and what not) until the computer tells me it cannot mount then nothing happens. Ive looked online and it seems to be a software issue.
If its any help I was downloading a torrent (.avi, no viruses) at the time. I know sometimes if one file on the hard drive becomes corrupt the whole thing becomes unusable. Regardless I would appreciate it if anyone knows a way to at the very least retreive the files on the drive, but preferably know how to just get it back to normal. If i could get it to force mount (via terminal or something) I know which file would possibly be the corrupt one or something so I could work with it.

    Bejan:
Thanks for posting back with the pics of the messages from your computer. Disk Utility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing a volume is a directory error which cannot be repaired by Disk Utility. Unfortunately, Disk Warrior may not be able to replace the rebuilt directory, either. Tech Tool Pro has a better chance of repairing it, although this particular directory issue can be stubborn, and is often rooted in a hardware issue. Your surest bet is to backup/clone the information on the HDD using a utility like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, completely reformat and erase the HDD (directions below), then restore data from backup.
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing an External HDD
    • Connect external HDD to computer
    • Turn on external HDD
    • Start up computer and log in
    • Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and launch DU.
    • Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    • Select Partition tab in main panel.
    • Click on Options button
    • Select Apple Partition Map (PPC Macs) or GUID Partition Table (Intel Macs)
    • Click OK
    • Select number of partitions in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
For more partitions than one, after you have selected the number of partitions adjust the size of the partition by selecting the top partition and typing in the size; then move down if more adjustments need to be made.
(See Dr. Smoke’s FAQ Backup and Recovery for tips on partitioning external HDD)
    • Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
    • Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    • Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    • Select Erase tab
    • Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID
    • Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
    • Click Erase button
    • Repeat above procedure to erase each partition
    • Quit Disk Utility.
