Chances the KIN TWOm ever shows up as a free Certified Pre-Owned Feature Phone?

Does anyone think or know if the KIN TWOm will ever show up as a free Certified Pre-Owned Feature Phone?
I only ask because virtually every other feature phone ends up showing up there sooner or later, but it seems like the KIN might be the exception...
If it did show up there, how long would it take (approx.) after its release date?
fisharefriends, you out there?

I will predict yes, it will eventually show up as a CPO device. It usually takes months after release though to have enough in stock to offer it online. In addition, it may be available in some areas, but not others, depending on ZIP code.
I can tell you it took about six months for the Bold 9650 to be offered as a CPO. That's the only timeline I can think of off the top of my head. The Kin was re-released in early November, so maybe this summer???

  • Has anyone else bought the Kin TwoM and found it the worst thing ever??

I got the Kin TwoM and found it the worst cell phone I have had EVER.It never keeps its battery life but for a day and the screen is way too touchy and I can not send people photos or post them online I have yet to get the wi fi to work anymore it just stopped.I hate this cell and if I had the money I would buy different one right now but instead I am stuck with it.

Maybe I should clearify this a bit the issue wasn't the device but more along the devices popularity with the customers, this information is basically posted on a number of forums but I dont see Verizon addressing this as a issue because the device works well for some but it simply wasn't for everyone..  If you search the forum you could find a number of reported reviews...

  • How to check in the KIN TWOm is in a store near me?

I am wondering if there is a way to check through the website if a store near me has the KIN TWOm is in stock

I don't think you can check through this site. You will have to call the stores directly. There is a Store Locator button at the upper right though.

  • Latest firmware version to date for the Kin TWOm.

What is the latest firmware to date for the Kin TWOm? I understand that there may not have been an update in a long time, if any for that matter, but I wanted to check in with what the latest firmware is if anyone here was sure. Then at least we'll all be on the same page about it & update if necessary.
    Thank you!
I believe, to check, it's under SETTINGS > ABOUT YOUR PHONE
Looking under "Software version" I think. Mine reads "1.0.1 (4704.0)

We just received word on facebook that a new version exists with 1.10.  Can we get a clarification on this? He even has a picture to prove it!  His firmare version says 1.10 (4704.8).  My version is exaclty what is listed above, 1.01 (4704.0). How do I get the newest version of the firmware???
    Hi Daveman80,
I have checked my resources and I learned that Verizon Wireless has not released a software update for the Kin TwoM. The latest software available for this device is the one you currently have in your phone. Please note that some customers install unapproved Beta software updates on their phones at their own risk. The post you saw on Facebook most likely includes pictures of unapproved software update.
Please be assured that we will push any approved software updates to your phone when provided by the manufacturer.

  • Anyway to read books on the KIN TWOM

    Hey all,
I was wondering if anyone had found a way to read books on this phone. I apologize if this has been answered somewhere else.
    Thanks for your time.

I posted this response to a similar question:
I recently added an ebook called Planet of the ******, to the Kin Twom .  Of course, this being a Kin, I had to get creative.  I found freeware called RasterBook to convert a html ebook to .jpg.  This allowed me to load the jpegs through Zune.  Now, when I go to camera -->albums, I can read the ebook.
The way I figured out to do it:
    1. Download the freeware RasterBook
    2. Open notepad and type in the following: start RasterBook.exe --width 480 --height 320 --rotate 90 --overlap 20 --format jpeg
    3. Save the file as kin.bat in the directory C:\Program Files (x86)\RasterBook
    4. Download a .html version of an ebook.  I found a free one (Planet of the ******) at Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page)
5.Double click on the kin.bat file.  This launches RasterBook
    6. Open the folder containing the .html of your ebook. Drag and drop the .html file into the RasterBook window.
    7.  Click on the button "Render Book" in the RasterBook window.
    8. You will see your .jpg files start to generate.
    9. Finding the resulting .jpg files is a little tricky.  The RasterBook freeware kept throwing the ebook .jpgs in the folder C:\Users\<your username here>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\RasterBook or C:\Program Files (x86)\RasterBook.  There seems to be no rhyme or reason to where the hundreds of jpg files save to.
    10. Once you find your.jpg files load them using Zune to your Kin.
    11.  Then go to camera --> albums and you should be able to find the book.
    12.  To read each page of the book swipe the screen to the right or the left to advance to the next page in the book.

    Thanks sergig4925 for the suggestions!
    Nase97,
I would be happy to check and see if we carry the earphones in our inventory!  Just reply to my direct message with the requested information, and will be happy to assist.

  • Certified, pre-owned .. the real scoop

so what gives? The phone I want is free with my new every two but only with a certified pre owned.  OR I pay 150.00

If you want the phone, get the pre-owned, if not pay $150. The warranties are the same.

  • Why has Verizon stopped selling the Kin Twom?

    Several possibilities:
Is it because they don't want people to be able to access the Web without using data? They would prefer pushing people to smartphones?
Is it because the manufacture has stopped making it? Are there REALLY no new ones available?
Is it because it isn't selling well?
My son liked mine so much that he wanted one. He had to resort to buying one through a Craigslist ad.

Thanks to the community members for your input. Indestructo, were you needing assistance with the messaging issue? Were you able to send your messages? It is a good practice to refresh your phone by power cycling it off and on once every few days. This only takes a few moments and will refresh your signal connections. The longer the device is kept on without power cycling, it can affect how the device operates. Here's a link for assistance in troubleshooting issues for text messaging.  If your needing online assistance with your Kin Twom, here is a link. You could also send me a private message if you need further assistance.

  • What is going on with the kin TWOm??

I want this phone so bad!! I have called everybody that has anything to do with this phone!! Nobody is giving me any answers at all. However i called the manufacture and they said they stopped making them a month ago soo... ?? Please verizon can i get a answer that is right. And is their any way at all I  could get this phone? anywhere?
    Thanks!!

For about the past week there've been several "Kin Twom" phones ebay auctions in "new other" condition which ebay and the seller define as
"New other (see details): A new, unused item with absolutely no signs of wear. The item may be missing the original packaging, or in the original packaging but not sealed. The item may be a factory second or a new, unused item with defects. See the seller’s listing for full details and description of any imperfections."
"The phone may be classified as Overstock, Manufacturer Refurbished, Buyer Remorse / Carrier Return, or Used. Since we purchase in large quantities, we do not know the specific history of each model."
And now and then I see a "Kin Twom" phone in "new" (not "new other") condition for auction on ebay.

  • Contacts saved on the KIN TWOm

I just spent a few hours keying in all my contacts from my old phone.
Now I'd like to know if there's a way to save or export them to my computer.  If this phone needs to be replaced under warranty and I get another KIN TWOm I sure don't want to have to repeat this tedious process again.
Is there a way to export my contacts that are on my KIN TWOm and import them if needed?
    Thanks

I am not sure if it would be possible. You probably already know, that backup assist syncs the backup to an online database, that you can access through My Verizon. I am not sure if there is a 'sync with computer' option from the website, if it could grab your outlook, gmail contacts, etc. Assuming it could: then it would be similar to treat the backup assist and your computer as the same source. Now, from there, like stated, you can get contacts from backup assist to the phone (it requires a trip to the store): i'm not sure if they have to physically hook up a separate phone, to the kin phone, to do so. But if they do, then it would be about as simple as loading the backup assist contacts to a separate phone, and then hooking up that separate phone to the Kin. I don't know if you own the phone, or if you are currently shopping, but the phone does have a hidden programming menu (accessed by dialing ##77647266488, access code is 000000; note that you have to dial this from the 'phone app', you can't call it from a saved contact, etc because it isn't actually dialing a number, it is just running a process that goes to the programming menu). In that menu, there is a contacts menu, and in there, an import contacts, and export contacts.
    screenshots of the programming menu:
The problem: no one knows where the phone imports from, or where the phone exports from. When you press export, it will say 'contacts successfully exported!'. My guess is, it creates some 'standard' file type containing your contacts, and when you go in-stores, the machine that they use accesses the actual memory of the phone, and in whatever folder it stores it in, they can just pull it from there, or import a file into the phone in the same manner. I do know, that a while back, i was playing around in this menu and accidentally pushed 'import contacts', and then i had duplicates of every contact, which was a pain to go through and delete. So it seems likely that they have that file type i mentioned ont he phone, and depending if you push import or export, it'll either create the file, or import that file type into the phone contacts list (maybe..could it be as simple as connecting the phone to the computer via usb while pushing this button..?? but i doubt it, its never that easy with microsoft; maybe you or someone else can try it though, just in case ).
I don't know how much computer knowledge you have, but I read another thread saying they were trying to use a workaround, with a program called 'Python' (also another method in-progress called 'bitpim') to access and edit the phone, both its code, and just as a file on the computer (think, mass storage device-type access). I also read somewhere that someone was able to open the phone's contents ont he computer, but the problem was he couldn't open individual files like they were locked, or read-only. But I bet, if you can open it up on a computer, then you can pull the file out, or copy one in, and then it would make transferring contacts possible at home on any PC. But, if you're like me and either/both don't have the knowledge or the time to figure this out, then you have to live with no exporting contacts. If you do have this computer knowledge though, go ahead and try it out.
With one exception, i bet in-stores, they are able to access the phone's files and pull out that export file, so maybe they would be able to transfer that to My Verizon, or another phone/database to back-up. Just to warn you though, Verizon reps are not computer science majors, so they likely wouldn't be able to figure this out (if they haven't already, that is), and from my experience, most reps don't even know that this phone was re-launched.
I'll just ask though, if you do figure this out, please share Many, many of us would like to know.
Edit: Here is a link to the microsoft forums that has an extensive, technical discussion about reading the phone as a usb device, editing the phones and trying to get contact importing/exporting to work, etc. Within this thread, 3 other threads working ont he same thing are also linked.

  • Has anyone else honestly had GOOD luck with the Kin TwoM?

I recently purchased a Refurb Kin TwoM off ebay...I havent yet activated it but I did want to pass this along to others (as I was curious about) that I WAS able to take my old Samsung Intensity to a VZW Store and they transferred all my contacts within about 5 minutes! I wanted to make sure that would work first before anything!  Also, I tested out the wifi @ home and Mcdonalds and it connected just fine!..its like a Wifi-Enable Mp3 player right now and it only cost me $40, so hopefully once i fully activate it the actual PHONE will work!  There are a few quirks Ive noticed like others have pointed out..such as the screen lock doesnt actually lock the volume controls on the side....and the browser is awesome for a basic phone but isnt quite as smooth or 'fluid' for webpages like our Ipod Touch is...(but you really shouldnt compare it to any smart' devices that like) Im not sure if its true for all Kin's but I havent been able to play videos offline like Youtube? anyone else have this issue? I also wish with there were some simple Apps like FB / Twitter/ Maps available but I suppose I cant expect too much!

I know I'm tempting fate by posting this, but yes, I've been quite happy with my KIN TWOm.
I got mine originally in June, 2011. A couple of weeks later, it dropped from the holster on a dirt path and must have hit a pebble or something, because a small section of the screen stopped working. VZW sent me a "Certified" replacement (cost me $99 because of the apparent physical damage), and it has been performing fine for the past 13 months.
Sure, there are some software quirks (It's Microsoft, remember?) but the benefits clearly outweigh those.  Probably the thing I miss most is the lack of any voice recording/command function.  But I love that it has WiFi, and the nice camera and 8GB memory let me take over 400 pictures when my normal camera was stolen on the second day of a trip to Europe.  The Zune music player is nice as well, and the e-mail client, while limited in function, is much nicer than the one on my previous phone.
As for the actual phone functions, I text more than I talk, and the physical keyboard is very nice for that. As for voice calls, I do that pretty seldom, but have not had any problem with dropped calls, volume, etc.
OK, the big elephant in the room is the "black screen" that seems to affect so many people. It's happened to me a few times as well. I think my background as a computer guy has helped me deal with this.  When this has happened to me, it's always been when the device was "sleeping", and just didn't want to wake up. Like maybe it wasn't recognizing the interrupt from the "back" button. In those cases, I've found that holding the button down a little longer, opening the keyboard, or briefly pressing the power button will get its attention. Or sometimes I just need to let the device rest for a minute or two and it manages to untie itself.  There have just been a very few times when I've had to do a cold boot (remove/replace the battery).
You also need to be careful as to how you put the device in your pocket or belt holster. Make sure that you don't position it in a way that the power button can be accidentally pressed when you sit down. There have been a few times when I take the phone out of my pocket and the little power off confirmation box is displayed. If that happens, be careful not to touch "OK" -- unless you want to power off.
Anyway, maybe mine is living on borrowed time, but overall I've been very happy with it so far.
I know there are others who have not had such a good experience, but this thread asked for people who were happy with their KINs, and I am.

  • Is the KIN TWOm a good upgrade?

I have to get a feature phone (no data plan for me) and at the moment I have an enV touch. I was pretty much thinking of getting a Samsung SCH u370 or this phone but I wasnt sure which one to get since the Samsung phone looks really similar to my enV touch. Do you KIN TWOm owners like the phone? It seems there are lots of negative reviews about it and people saying theres like nothing to do on it.
    Thanks

Well, I guess you could say that there's nothing to do on it other than talk, text, take pictures & videos with the 8 megapixel camera, download and listen to music on the built-in zune player, retrieve and send e-mail from multiple accounts, and use the web with WiFi.
On the other hand, if you're looking for something to download games and other apps to, then you won't be happy with this device. You can't use VZbackup, VZnavigator, etc.
Basically, if you're looking for a portable communications device with a pretty nice camera, music player and WiFi to avoid data charges, I think you'll be happy.
If you're looking for a device to play games and download apps to, then you should probably look at something else.
One more thing...when I was looking for my phone, I noticed that several of the feature phones (Samsung Intensity II for example) had 2.5mm headphone jacks rather than the standard 3.5mm.  That means that most headphones/earbuds you may have won't fit without an adapter.  Also, while most do not have WiFi, some don't even have 3G. They just have 1X (or 2G), which is much slower.  The Kin 2 has a standard 3.5mm jack and 3G in addition to WiFi.
So it really boils down to what's important to you.

  • Cool features of the Kin Twom(if you are considering one or want to know more about your phone)

    1. Surf the web and talk at the same time - I was watching a commercial for the AT&T iphone talking about how it could surf and talk at the same time, so I decided to test the kin out as well. Turns out, the KIN is easily capable of doing this! An excellent feature IMO, so enjoy!
2.Call log swipe - Many have thought that a call log doesnt exist for this phone, but if you are in the phone app and you swipe the screen, you will see the call log with a shortcut to text your friends as well. Another great feature.
    3. Playing games on your KIN - One of the more popular sites to use is playtouchgames.com. I have tested numerous games on the site and they work quite well.  Im sure there are several other sites but this one seems to work the best. Saving it as a favorite is the best way to go.
4.Sending ringtones to your phone - One issue I have seen posted numerous times is that the ringtones arent liked by that many people. Personally, I love them, but if you wanted to send your own ringtones, all you need to do is send them to [email protected]  and you can add them easily. If you utilize free ringtone makers online, you can basically put any song/tone on your phone with ease!
    5. Saving Mobile applications on the phone - Most mobile applications are web based, and you can easily save them as favorites, accessable on the top of the browser screen, or you can actually pin them to your "apps" screen for easy retrieval. Whenever you find the mobile application you like, such as mtv, facebook, twitter, etc, click the star and you will be prompted with a "add to favorites" or "pin to apps" screen. This makes using the web browser so much easier and efficent.
Feel free to add your own..

Thank you, Daveman, this info was very informative.
One quick clarification though: regarding (1) and surfing and calling at the same time, I am 90% sure that Verizon is not able to call and access the 3G network simultaneously. However: you CAN access wifi at the same time, and this is the same case with most/all phones; wifi is a completely separate entity, and while it access the internet and serves the same function as 3G, it is physically unrelated to calling and 3G (has a separate antenna, etc). But since most kin users use wifi-only anyways, this is very good news; couple that with an above-average speakerphone quality, and the sky's the limit.
And personally, thanks for the link to the games site! If you know of any others that do work and you've tested, i'd very much be interested in finding out and if you could share, it would be much appreciated I've tried looking for game sites that work, and haven't found one; good thing you are better at finding them than me
And last note: as far as the apps go, the Kins can't actually have the apps on them, but you can link directly to the websites that the apps originate from (and pin them to the main 'apps' screen, lik you mentioned); many apps are made for convenience of viewing on a phone and the smaller screen, but that is just something you will have to live without with the Kin phones; if you can't, then get a smartphone.

  • Are there any QR code reader's that work with the KIN twoM? Any web based appliacations? VZW based?

ANy help would be greatly appreciated. thank you!

Well thank you! I just recently learned about them myself  because the company I work for is about to start using them. Many companies are utilizing these now and I bet youll see alot more in the years to come. For example, best buy is actually using these on their price tags. Here, take a look: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=best+buy+qr+code&view=detail&id=07500A4A6E4E35B28119067F5FA2091D12CFCC6D&first=1&FORM=IDFRIR
See the QR on the lower left side? If you scanned that with your phone(or did I what I suggested with the kin), it would lead you to best buys mobile site for the item you are looking at.  With that link,  you can access further information about the product before you purchase it. Like all the specs listed online. So it seems like it could be a very useful tool. Recently bought a copy of Jack@ss 3d and a QR code was on there as well.  I believe that one linked you to some extra scenes or stuff like that.
