Change all referenced files in Aperture for entire library?

Hi experts...
All my Aperture files are on an external HDD and I had to copy everything over to a new drive recently. The old drive was called "photos", the new drive is called "My Passport". Without thinking about it, I made the new directory structure a bit different. On the old drive, my structure looked like this:
Volume = photos
File Path = photos/year/month/name_of_project/original_files.NEF
On the new drive, the structure is like this:
Volume = My Passport
File Path = year/month/name_of_project/original_files.NEF
When I started poking around in some of my projects, I found that Aperture told me that the originals were either missing or offline. I figured out how to reconnect all the originals in a given project - but I've got several hundred projects and reconnecting everything is going to be tedious and time consuming.
Is there a way (either through the program or via a script) that I can tell Aperture, essentially..."hey, for all the images in my library where the master used to be on drive 'photos' at <filepath>, they're now on drive 'My Passport' at <same filepath name except for top level directory>."
Alternatively, if I rename my new drive to "photos" and then put all the 'year' folders under a directory called 'photos', will Aperture be able to find everything magically?

A HA!!!!
I believe that did the trick. Aperture is chunking through all the referenced files now and reconnecting them...so I wait. But I'm pretty sure this will work, now that I think about it.
Once all the images are done reconnecting I'll come back and mark this as "correct answer". Thanks!

  • Changes in referenced files

I have a project using referenced files.
I have made changes to the files in aperture (color, levels, etc.), but these are not reflected in the referenced file (I "locate referenced file" and I find it, in the correct directory, but it doesn't have the changes).
If I "show in finder" it goes to the same file that I get when "locating referenced file," which doesn't reflect changes that appear in Aperture.
When I "export a version," the file does have the correct changes.
    Can someone explain what's happening?
    Thanks.

You are mistaken about the basics of Aperture's file handling.  Aperture features a _non-destructive_ workflow.  That means that your Originals are never altered.  (You can over-ride this, but not without knowing that is what you are doing.)
The Images that show in the Browser and the Viewer are rendered on-the-fly from your Original and the instructions in the Version file.  (The Version is actually a set of text instructions.)  Changes to the Image are saved to the Version file.  They are not saved to the Original.
Image = Original modified according the the instructions in the Version file.
Furthermore, your Images don't exist in memory or on disk when you close Aperture.  (Previews do, but let's leave those for later.)  Images are created when needed and stored in memory.  That is why, when you want to have a file to share with another program, you must export your Image from Aperture.  "Export" = "make me an image-format file of the selected Image(s)".
That's how Apeture works.  The gain in storage efficiency (for multiple versioning) is enormous.  What you have discovered is normal and correct.  (And has nothing to do with whether your Originals are Referenced or are Managed.)
Some additional information you might find helpful is in the "Version" section of this very short guide I wrote to the parts of Aperture.

    Hello guinness guzzler,
You can set the equalizer from the View menu, which will affect any songs played in iTunes.

  • Referenced files in Aperture 3 are not reading from new hard drive.

I just merged one libary into another library on my machine in Aperture 3. Everything seemed to work fine with that. Many of the images in the new large library are referenced images. I had many of them initially referenced onto external drives. I'm not consolidating into one larger drive (with a back up too of course). I copied the files onto the larger drive from the individual external drives. I plugged in the new external drive with all of the photos on it and when I went to locate referenced images in Aperture, I found them, however many times the "reconnect" or "reconnect all" buttons are greyed out when I choose the photo. It's not letting me reconnect the images and they do have the same file names.
I have no idea what to think or do. I don't want to have to plug in all of the old drives to get to the pictures. I want everything on one drive to access my large aperture library that is now all in one place as well.
    Please help!
    Thanks!

I meant the full version number:
With permissions I meant the following:
You need to have read & write permissions to the files to be able to reconnect the files. To check the permissions, select an original image filein the Finder and press the key combination ⌘I to launch the "Info" panel. In the Info panel disclose the "Sharing&Permissions" brick.
Check if you have Read&Write access to all your image files, also to the folders containing them. If there is a permissions problem, change the permissions to "Read&Write". It would help to set the "Ignore Ownership on this Volume" flag. You'll find this flag in the "Info" panel for your external drive.
But the safest way really to solve this would be to let Aperture relocate the files to your new drive and not to move them manually. Connect the original drives with your original master image files and move the masters by using Aperture's command "Relocate original file". Then their would be no need to reconnect.

  • All referenced files broken....

    Hey,
i recently did a clean install of snow leopard and used timemachine to restore all my files however i have been working with a referenced file management structure in aperture 3 and although all the files are in the correct path and the hardrive name has not changed etc, aperture wont recognise my library files is there any way of forcing it to recognise them, or building a new managed library without losing all the versions of my files?
    Thanks
    Anthony

I have a referenced file library. I started having this problem after I installed the 3.1 update in October - I did NOT have this problem prior to that installation.
After the 3.1 update, when I unsuccessfully tried to export a version, I found that many - indeed most of my files have the 'red-line' badge, indicating that the referenced file cannot be found.
I do the File / Locate Referenced Files thing, reconnect my photo, and sometimes (yes, sometimes!) the red slash goes away. I've tried to determine why is seems to be hit-or-miss, but I've been unable to identify why they connect and usually not. I test by trying to export a version.
So then, after checking the support boards and this forum, I tried rebuilding my library. (And yes, before I did the rebuild, I ran the 'Repair Permissions ' and 'Repair Database' fixes also. Multiple times.)
Here's a real whacky part of this problem: Sometime when I attempt to reconnect my referenced files, the red-slash badge remains, but I'm able to export a version. And just as intermittently, again after attempting to reconnect referenced files, the badge will go away, and I'll think I have success, but the histograms reads "Image offline." (And it is - I cannot export and my reconnection has failed.)
Today I took my external HD with my to the Apple Store for a 1"1. They initially removed the plist, which didn't change anything. My store has a pretty knowledgeable crew, but this one stumped them too. I showed them what I did, they did the same thing, with the results I described above. They told me to AppZap and re-install A3 and A3 updates - which I've done. My problem persists. They thought that if a clean install didn't work, that maybe I might have a 'corrupt library' - which sounds serious - and I'm not sure I understand HOW that would've happen.
I sure could use some help on this one - when A3 works, I love it! But I've had major headaches after the last two updates, and I'm just exasperated. (Oh yes - I'm stressin' too since my wife is asking me about the photo cards and gifts we were planning on giving for Christmas. Since I can't export, I'm kinda stuck. I haven't tried reprocessing my images in CS5 just because I thought I could fix this...)
    Many thanks ~

  • Can't locate Referenced Files in Aperture 3

All my photo master files are in separate directories on a NAS (network attached storage; 4x1Tb) and I import Projects from that into Aperture on my IMac.  I migrated my MAC Aperture Libraries to a separate external drive and lost some of the references to the Master.  I can reconnect some Projects to the masters on my NAS, but not all.  Some projects won't reconnect using  Locate Referenced Files.  I can find the files and match the photos and Aperture looks like it reconnected, but when I look at the separate images, I get "File not found."  I know the original photos are on my NAS because I can see them using a separate PC hooked into it, but can't seem to complete making the link to the master.  My intent is to move all masters into my Aperture Library because I can't stand losing photos this way anymore, but I need help making that link.  Any ideas what's happening and what to do.
Even though I have the originals on my NAS, all my processed versions (4 and 5* photos) are in my Aperture Library and I hate to lose those.
Update: I seem to be able to connect one photo at a time, but selecting an entire set of Project photos and doing "connect all" doesn't seem to be working.  I have thousands of photos and working one at a time is impossible.
    How can I get help?
    <Email Edited By Host>

I migrated my MAC Aperture Libraries to a separate external drive and lost some of the references to the Master.
How is your NAS formatted, where your original masters are stored? And how is the external drive formatted that holds your Aperture library?
Your Aperture library needs to be on a drive formatted Mac OS X extended, Journaled. If the drive should not have that formatting, move the Aperture library to disk with the coorrect format.
If you cannot reconnect originals, that are clearly there, the reason may be, that your Aperture library needs repairing, see: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual
I'd try to repair permissions and to repair the library, before trying to reconnect again.
Since you want to consolidate all originals in your Aperture library, I'd try to copy the originals that cannot be recoonected, to the same drive that holds yor aperture libryr and try to reconnect them there, then consolidate them from there. It can be, that the network connection of the NAS is not reliable enough.

  • Deleting referenced files in Aperture 3

With version 3, I'm trying Aperture for the first time and have a deletion question.
    I've imported both ways:
    1) "in the Aperture Library", and
    2) "in their current location"
My question concerns method 2, aka Referenced Files.
Is there an option that can be set so the referenced file will be moved to the OS X trash when the Aperture trash is emptied? In other words, method 2 behaving the same as method 1.
    Thanks,
    Al

I haven't done it with Aperture 3 (I moved back to managed files) but in general with referenced files it behaves the same as option 1, except it asks you "Do you want to move referenced files to the trash?" and if you say yes then it deletes them.
    Have you tried it?

  • How to update after external change of referenced file

Hello, I've imported some pictures as referenced. Then I've changed one of those pictures with another program (just orientation) and my expectation was to see the change update as well in Aperture, but when I re-opened Aperture the thumbnail was still with the previous orientation as well as the image itself. Is this correct ? How can I update the informations in Aperture as soon as a referenced file is changed by an external program ?
    Many thanks.
    Davide

Hi Davide.  Never.  That's just not how Aperture works.
In fact, it works much better than that.  You do know that Aperture has extensive and robust image adjusting tools?  In many cases -- and certainly in the trivial case of changing an Image's orientation -- Aperture's adjustment tools are more than up to any job you throw at it.  In the cases where it is not, you can use plug-ins, or any external editor you have set Aperture to use.
You should _never_ change, move, rename or in any way alter any Referenced Master file except using the controls within Aperture.  Doing so will almost certainly break the link between the Image (in Aperture) and the Master file, with crippling results.  Sometimes these breaks can be fixed.

  • IPod Touch changed all music files to other

I'm using a 2nd Generation 16GB iPod Touch. My friend was playing with it yesterday, and he played with it till the battery was completely dead. I turned it on briefly and I looked at the music and I noticed that only one song was in my iPod, Hot for Teacher by Van Halen, a song I had bought earlier that day through iTunes from my iPod Touch. Normally I have over 6GB of music on it.
So I plugged it into my PC to charge it and such, and when I started iTunes and looked at that bar that tells you how much of each type of files you have (music, video, photos, apps, and other) I saw that I now had over 6GB of other and around 5MB of music. I think that my iPod somehow messed up when my friend used it till the battery died, and changed all the music to "other" except that one song.
So guessing this, I synced my iPod with my computer. I got all the music back on it, but now there is still 6GB of "other", and my iPod is nearly full. I want to know how I can remove all that "other", I never had 6GB of it before.
    Thanks.

That much other indicates corrupted data on your phone. The fix is a restore in iTunes. Here are the instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414. iTunes will reload your songs, etc after the restore.

  • Any way to redo "Determining gapless..." for entire library?

I have iTunes7 installed and it's working flawlessly. I know about the gapless checkbox option in the song options area. However, is there any way to have iTunes7 go back through teh entire library like it does when you start it up for the first time?
I am using Libra to manage multiple libraries so while this process was done on the first library when I first opened iT7, it didn't do it when I switched to anotrher library. So, I was trying to see if I could force the process to repeat on this secondary library but didn't see any option for it.
    Anyone know? Thanks.
    Jeff

This seems to be an issue with ALL online book order places. Every one of them uses these stupid random templates at start up and then none give you any way to change all the pages at the same time. I too have wrestled with this and still don't understand why they think we want every page completely randomly picked and that we couldn't possibly want the same layout through out the book.
I feel your pain and don't have a good answer for you.

  • Equalizing song volume for entire library

    Hey folks,
Does anyone know if there is a way to equalize the volume of every song in my iTunes library so that they all play back at the the same volume on my iPods?
Most of the CDs I've loaded into iTunes play back at about the same level on my iPods but some play at a very low volume. I was hoping that I could highliht the entire library and click something that would stabelize the volume of each and every individual song so that they are all at the same level and I wont have to keep manually adjusting the volume on my iPods.

You can turn on Soundcheck in iTunes and on your iPod.
Or you can try a 3rd party solution like MP3Gain: http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/

  • Using referenced files in Aperture and changing names of Master files

My Aperture library (masters) are stored on an external hard drive. The label for each image is simply the one that the camera supplied on the SD card. After importing the images into Aperture, I give them a more meaningful version name. Is there a way I can now add those version names to the masters stored on the external hard drive? (I would eliminate the numbers provided by the camera) Please give specific steps if this is possible. Thank you so very much!

You can change the name of the Master as it is imported into Aperture, have a look at the manual regarding Import Options:
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=4%26sec tion=6%26hash=apple_ref:doc:uid:Aperture-UserManual-91292IMP-SW8
For masters already added to your library you can rename them to match the version names, have a look at the manual regarding Renaming Master Image Files:

  • All .m4v files only import for 1 second (PRE 9/Windows 7)

    Hi,
I'm a new PRE 9 user and am experiencing a really significant problem with importing .m4v files: Every .m4v I select ends at the 1-second mark and there does not seem to be any way to make the program see past that 1-second mark in the source file. Other file formats I've tried seem just fine, but most of the source material I want to use is already in .m4v files and have to think that this is some kind of bug.
Does anyone know what's going on here--and, more importantly, how to fix the problem so I can access the entire content of the .m4v files I want to use in PRE 9?
Thanks a lot and take care,

    Hi Hunt,
Thanks for the rapid reply (and the welcome too). I think most of the files came from Handbrake (importing DVD content) if memory serves. All these .m4v files play just fine in Windows Media Player, QuickTime Player, etc.
I opened the properties for the last .m4v I tried to use (this morning) in PrE and the properties are listed as follows....

Also, new PrE project appear to default to: "NTSC-Hard Disk, Flash Memory Camcorders-Standard 48kHz" (which I'm assuming is the default, as I don't recall changing anything).
