"change all" unavailable to change default application

I've been irritated that Preview constantly wants to open all of my image and PDF files. I've had to manually change the default application for each individual file (not fun when I have hundreds, possibly thousands of these files). I did a search to see how I could select Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat as my default applications, and discovered that there is supposed to be a "change all" option available for the "get info" window. I do not have this option at all.
I did the obvious things: I selected "other" under the "get info" dialog, and the application I wanted the files to default to. "Change all" did not appear. I tried the forum's advice and reset my launch services, to no avail. I've tried Disk Repair, and still the same issue.
I'm running 10.4.8 on a Dual 2Ghz G5 (pre-Intel), and Adobe Photoshop CS2 (9.0.2) and Acrobat 7.0.8. Also, the version of Preview I have is 3.0.8.
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Change All is a clickable button that should appear below the drop down menu from which you select the desired application. If the button does not appear then perhaps you have a corrupted installation of OS X and should consider doing a fresh installation.
In addition to doing Disk Repair your should also Repair Permissions.
As an alternative you can download a freeware preference pane called RCDefaultApp which is used to set associations for applications and many other defaults. You will find it at www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com.

  • Change Default Application For "All" Isn't Permanent

    Hi,
I attempted to search for this problem in the forums but don't have time to drill down and that's why we are all here anyway (i.e. to help each other) so here goes.  When I change the default application by clicking "open with" and then specify Adobe Reader and then click the "change all" button, PDF's will open with Adobe Reader until I reboot.  Then I have to repeat the entire process.
What am I missing?  I have done this like 30 times & can't find any documentation that describes the issue.  I Googled the issue but didn't get any hits so I'm not sure if it's a known glitch or if I'm just being a blonde.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions...
    Reset Launch Services...
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/resetlaunchservices.html#Anchor-Reset-47857
    Reboot.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
Try your steps one more time if needed.

  • How to change default application associated with some mime types?

When we install some new program, for example GIMP, I assume the newly installed program is added to some mime type database, and the /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache file is automatically generated.
Using my example, GIMP will be the default application for all its registered mime types, even application/pdf. I surely don't want this to happen, and I surely don't want to create all kinds of files that GIMP registered and right click on them and choose Properties and then change it in the Open with... tab. I want to systematically de-prioritize GIMP so that it will not override my previously assigned default applications.
I wrote a script to modify the mimeinfo.cache file, and it seems to work great. However, after a reboot or upgrade or something I didn't notice, the default application of application/pdf is reconfigured to GIMP. I think the cache suffix of the file indicates that it is just a cache and may be changed by system unnoticed. So I am looking for a new way to change the default applications.
As far as I know or guess from the phenomena, there should be some system utility that generates the mimeinfo.cache file, it seems to parse all the *.desktop files under /usr/share/applications and register them to certain mime types accordingly. The sequence of the *.desktop files get parsed seems to be related to the time the application is installed, and the newly installed applications seems to be parsed later and inserted in the front of the application list or be parsed earlier and appended to the application list. Is there some place I can change the sequence of the parsing? Or is there some place I can change the behavior of the system utility?
I know that I can populate my ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list to override the system wide defaults, however, I want a more elegant way to this.
Any opinion on this is welcomed.

Ah, right. Don't know what DE you are on, but in Gnome:  right-click a (e.g. pdf) file -> Preferences -> Open with.
All Applications listed there will be available from the right click menu, the marked one will be used on double-click.
    errgrh...

I guess what I am trying to propose is this: "de-prioritize" GIMP in its .dekstop file for the types you dont want it to be associated with, and manually add it back in through "Open With" for the file types you want it to be an option. Not sure if this is solving anything for you though

  • Change default application to Pages for .doc files?

When I double-click on a .doc file, TextEdit is the application that opens the file. Is there a way to change it, so that Pages '08 is the default application for .doc files?
    Thanks!

Select the file (in Finder)>File>Get Info, then under "Open With", select Pages and click "Change All".

  • Changing Default Application in Mail

Whenever I open a Word or Excel attachment in mail, it always defaults to Work or Excel in Windows (via Parallels desktop). Is there a way to change the default applications to be Word'04 and Excel'04 via Leopard?
I have Word and Excel for Leopard, and Word and Excel for Windows both installed since I run Parallels Desktop.

Option Click on the attachment and select Open With and choose the application you want to use.
Also with the attachment disembodied from the email, you can select it separately in Finder and open the Get Info to perform the same task and there you can select Change All, to the Mac application you prefer.

  • Change default application?

Is there a way using ARD to change the default application for a files. For example make PDF's open in Acrobat rather than Preview on the remote computers?
    MDA

Highlight a pdf file you want to have opened in Reader and press the Apple (command) key, plus i which brings up an info panel. One of the items in that panel is "Open with." Your defualt probably shows Preview so click the button and that will reveal other applications. If Adobe reader is not one of those, at the bottom is "Other."
Also, below that button is another marked "Change All" which will make the new selection the default for all such files.

  • How to change default application in file context menu

I know you can change the application that opens a file in the file;s info window (command i) and then double clicking the file opens it in that application. However the context menu still shows the same original default application. How to change what is shown as default in context menu?

You can't. You can change the default app in Get Info which will change the first listed app in the context menu to that default app. How the context menu is built is not under user control.

  • How to change "default" application?

How can I change the "default" application? I meen how to redirect http://host/apex to http://host/apex/f?p=100 instead of http://host/apex/f?p=4550? Thanks for answers.

Well, for one thing you can use Apache together with XE (as a proxy, easy to set up):
    Re: Existing http server
    HTTPS with Oracle XE ?
Re: How to get X-Forwarded-For value?
Here is another option using a new index.html file which does a redirect to your Apex application:
    Re: Default page
Setting the default-page for the DAD Apex might work, too (http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14258/d_epg.htm#BABFFDEH) but I am not sure about passing the parameters to the "f" procedure will work in this setting.

  • Change Default Application level setting for checkbox value from "On"/"Off" to 1/0

    Hi,
I am creating livecycle designer forms. In that the checkboxes take a default value of "On'/"Off" and I have to change it to 1 and 0 in all the boxes on layout checkbox property.
In livecycle i have to change it in Object-Binding tab.
Is there an application level setting where I can set the default to 1 and 0 instead of "on/"off" at the app level itself? this way every new form will have 0 and 1 instead of off/on
I export the form data to XML and push it to database and it needs 1 and 0.
I need the app setting for both Adobe Acrobat 9 Extended Pro
    Please help

It is 1/0 by default .....if you drag a checkbox from the object library onto the canvas and you are getting on/off as your default, then you have modified th eobject. You can set the object the way you want (anf property not just binding) and then you can drag the object back onto the Library palette. This will ask you to name it and if you choose the same name it will overwrite the one that is in the library.

  • How do I change default applications for specific extensions like .php

Every time I click on a .php or .html file it opens Adobe GoLive. Every time I click on a .psd file it opens up Photoshop.
I find this to be a complete pain because I rarely work in those applicaitons -- preferring quicker loading applications like Preview & TextWrangler which do most of what I want done with those files.
Is there any way to set my Apple system to default to those applications based on what extension of file I'm trying to open?
Thanks for all of your help.

    Hi ahbrobot
Controll-Click on a php-file. Go on "Get info", and change "open with" by clicking on "change all"
    Hope this helps

  • Changing default application for Pages and Word docs?

I wasn't sure if this was the right place to ask this...
I just got a new computer, running Tiger. I own older copies of Word (which I hate) and iWork (which I love). When I copied my data to my new computer, all my documents defaulted to opening in the new versions of those programs. Furthermore, it won't let me change the program that opens those type of documents.
I open the information on a document, tell it to open in Pages 1.0, and that works fine. But if I try to tell it to "Change All", it just reverts to Pages 2.0. The exact same thing happens when I try to tell Word docs to open in my old version of Word, or with Keynote. I can open my files just fine within the program, but it's getting really, really irritating not to be able to open documents by double clicking.
Any advice? I can't afford to buy the new programs, even if I wanted them (which I don't, in the case of Word).

  • Changing default applications

Since I started using my iPhone, iPhoto comes up, and not iTunes. Where is the default app or file that I need to change to reset what starts up when I plug something in?

When your iPhone includes photos that were captured by your iPhone, it is also detected as a camera when connected to your computer. If not, it won't.
Depending on which iPhoto version you are running, check iPhoto preferences to not launch when a digital camera is connected to you computer.
Or this can be done with the Image Capture application preferences.
Or import any such photos to your computer and then erase them from the iPhone. If you don't import these photos, what happens if your iPhone is lost of stolen? Bye-bye photos with your iPhone.

  • Change default application for mp3 extensions

Hello! Thank you in advance to any helpers. This is what I think is wrong:
I recently had some problems with safari, so I downloaded Firefox. In doing that, I think I changed my defaults for certain extensions, namely mp3.
So, all email mp3 attachments are opening in another webpage, instead of iTunes (which was the previous default). I do not have any start up disks as this is a hand-me-down laptop and I cannot figure out how to change the default back.
I tried dragging the file to the desktop, from the email, and it still showed up as a webpage. So I did the whole "get info" and "open using" and "change all" but then the system wanted to change ALL of my itunes files to the .mp3. This was because I had to rename the file (which I know doesn't do much) Any ideas?

well, I can't click on the file because it is in an email message and if I click, it opens to the internet page with a QuickTime audio player. I've checked all my quicktime stuff, too. I don't think that's it. All the songs in itunes library are ".m4a" The only way I was able to even get to the "open with" and etc. was to drag the .mp3 file onto the desktop and it wasn't even an mp3 file at that point, it was a weblink. I was able to open in in iTunes but it's not an audio file. Itunes put it in my podcast section with an exclamation point next to it.

  • How can I change default applications (Linux) ?

I have a RealVideo server, and I want to use RealPlayer to open various content-types such as audio/x-pn-realaudio and text/vnd.rn-realtext
For some types, I get a drop-down list that says "realplay (default)", but it's not, it's Totem, which is crippled by RedHat so it won't play anything except, maybe, Ogg. I can select the real realplay by browsing, which works but is tedious - my .mailcap file has all these types listed as using realplay so that's what I'd expect to be used.
For one type, it launches Totem immediately, and I don't see that in the edit/preferences/applications list so I can fix it.
Now that I think about it, it's probably got the Totem plugin installed. I'm not sure how to modify that short of disabling it altogether

You can (re)move the Totem plugins if you do not want to use them.
You can see the installed plugins that are enabled on the about:plugins page.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/about%3Aplugins
You can set the plugin.expose_full_path pref to true on the about:config page to see the full path of plugins on the about:plugins page.
It is best not to leave that pref set to true as it exposes that full path to web servers, so reset that pref to false after you are done with the about:plugins page.
    See "Manually uninstalling a plugin":
