Change app download folder

i have 2 hard drives, a 60GB (Windows 7) system SSD and a 2 TB HDD. my SSD is filling up because i initially installed some programs, most notebly itunes, after building my computer not knowing how much the folder size could expand. i have been able to move all my media to the HDD and have it work with itunes fine, but whenever i update apps, it keeps downloading onto the SSD even though i have changed the place where media is downloaded in my itunes prefrences. is there a way to change where apps are downloaded too or am i stuck having to cut and past them to my HDD every time i up date my apps?

Here are the typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
From what you say it sounds like you have a split library in the old layout. This leaves the Mobile Applications folder inside the library folder on the C:\.
You can use File > Library > Organize Library > Reorganize files in the folder "<Media Folder>" and then File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate files to get iTunes to store apps inside the iTunes Media folder.
In the layout above right, with the media folder (everything in the red box) inside the library folder, the library is considered to be portable. A portable library can be moved from one path to another without breaking the links between the library and the media and being self-contained is much easier to backup (You do backup, don't you?).
You can rearrange things to make a split library portable by taking a number of small steps which don't break the library.
The basic non-fatal manipulations are:
You can connect to an alternate set of library files by holding down Shift (Win) or Option (Mac) when starting iTunes.
You can move the library files to a new location as long as the media stays put.
You can move the library files and the media together if the media folder is a direct subfolder of the library folder.
You can rename the media folder to iTunes Media (if it isn't already) if the media folder is inside the library folder.
iTunes uses the name of the folder holding the library files as the window title. Having made a library "portable" you may need to take a final step of renaming the library folder to iTunes or, if the library files have ended up at the root of a drive, moving all of the library files and content folders into a new folder called iTunes.
After each change you need to open, test and close the relevant library before attempting another change. If a change broke the library, undo it or revert to using the previous set of library files.
In essence all you need to do to make your library portable is copy the library files into the parent folder of the media folder on the external/secondary drive and use the hold-down-shift/option-when-starting-iTunes method to connect to it. Other manipulations may be required to normalize the library so that the library and media folders have standard names.
If you are interested I can give specific steps for your circumstances.

  • Bookmarklet that changes the download folder and the open a website

    Hi,
is there a way to create a bookmark that changes to download folder to a known location and the open a website, like a normal bookmark would do.
i think the browser.download.dir; option in about:config is the right one.
    examle:
    1. click the bookmarklet
    2. change the folder to d:\temp\asdfasdf
    3. open the website http://www.asdfasdf.com
i didn't found information about changing the about config
    please help thanks

Sound like a damaged library. Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • How to (successfully) change Mail Downloads folder?

    Hi,
I've been trying to wrestle with my Mail Downloads folder location without success, so I thought I would ask.
I dislike having a separate "Mail Downloads" folder because stuff accumulates endlessly there. The default Mail Downloads is at ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Mail Downloads. Here's what I have tried:
The obvious: change "Downloads folder" in Mail prefs. No matter what I choose, the files are still downloaded to the default folder.
I removed ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Mail Downloads and made it a symlink to my ~/Downloads folder (where I'd like to put everything). This causes opening attachments from Mail to hang (I have to save them first, and then open from the saved location). I get these messages in Console (in this example, trying to open an attachment named "Manual.pdf", and PID 56818 is the Mail app):
9/13/12 11:52:29.707 AM CoreServicesUIAgent[56818]: Quarantine resolution refused to pid 56809 because it is not allowed to read /Users/a10022/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Mail Downloads/Manual.pdf
    9/13/12 11:52:29.000 AM kernel[0]: Sandbox: sandboxd(56817) deny mach-lookup com.apple.coresymbolicationd
    9/13/12 11:52:30.221 AM sandboxd[56817]: ([56809]) Mail(56809) deny file-issue-extension /Users/a10022/Downloads/Manual.pdf
    9/13/12 11:52:30.238 AM sandboxd[56817]: ([56809]) Mail(56809) deny file-issue-extension /Users/a10022/Downloads/Manual.pdf
    9/13/12 11:52:30.253 AM sandboxd[56817]: ([56809]) Mail(56809) deny file-issue-extension /Users/a10022/Downloads/Manual.pdf
Any thoughts? The symlink trick was working fine in Lion and before, the trouble started with the upgrade to Mountain Lion.
    Thanks,
    --Diego

    Hi,
I have spent quit some time on this and there is no decent option to do so. Mail is a buggy product since it ignores the default preferences. Old tricks with the symbolic link don't work. Most likely because Apple wants you to look at all the nice inline attachments in stead of treating them as a real attachment. Just like they do in their commercials.
I found some posts on how to move it to another disk but that was not my goal. So in the end, there was only one option left for me and that is to just make it a faourite folder in my finder so I can at least review it daily to clean it up.
Sorry for not having a desent fix but this works for me.
    Good luck!

  • Changing "Mail Downloads" folder for attachments

It seems in Leopard Mail, when you double click an attachment to open it, it is temporarily saved to ~/Library/Mail Downloads. This is in contrast to (I think) Tiger, where it would be saved to the Downloads folder set in the General preferences. There is still a setting for the Downloads folder in the General preferences, and according to the help window, it is to "Specify the folder in which to temporarily save attachments you open from a message". To me, that means the same as the Tiger behavior. However, if I change this preference to, say, "Desktop", it seems opening an attachment (not explicitly saving it) still saves it to the ~/Library/Mail Downloads folder, not the assigned folder. Is this the correct behavior? If so, the help window is misleading. Personally, I would like the option to change this folder, although I suppose there are workarounds such as changing the Mail Downloads folder to an alias of the desired destination folder.
    thanks.

Ok, so much for that clever workaround. Doesn't work, Mail just throws up an error and refuses to save the attachment. Any other ideas? I just want Mail to auto-save opened attachments onto the Desktop, in case I forget to explicitly save it, and so I don't have to root into subfolders to find it.

  • Change of download folder?

    Please can you help?
With a document open, go to save as, pdf, save in, "downloads".
Is it possible to change this default folder to another.
    Many thanks

I cannot reproduce that.  If I open a document and follow the same steps as you, it will always present me with the folder where the document originally resides (e.g. My Documents).
If you open an online document from your browser, then the browser will temporarily store it somewhere, e.g. your temp or download folder; naturally when you want to save it, you will be presented with that folder.

  • HT1848 My iTunes is transferring all of my purchases into my trash. How can I change the download folder back to the backup folder?

I just noticed that all of the purchases I just transferred have ended up in the trash. Tried it again after downloading a new app and it happened again. Does anyone have any idea how my Trash folder became the designated download/backup folder...and how can I change this?

In iTunes open Prefs > Advanced and see what it says for "iTunes Media folder location."

  • Why does the folder repeate twice when I change the download folder or save files to location?

If I choose another folder to save my downloaded files to, it repeats that folder twice. For example, I will choose my desktop and it will place the location as C:\Users\PC\Desktop\Desktop instead of just C:\Users\PC\Desktop. I tried disabling all add-ons and running it in safe mode, resetting all preferences, deleting the .perf file, reinstalling Firefox without saving preferences, yet I am still having the same problem.

  • My Option window in Firefox displays only partly. I can't change the download folder. 'Browse' is not showing. And the Advanced tab is not showing either

The Option Window in Firefox is incomplete. It only shows
General, Tabs, Content, Applications, Privacy, Security, Sync
The Advanced Tab is not showing and the Browse button to change download location is missing also.

If you are using an add-on theme switch to the default theme. If that isn't the source of your problem ....
Try the Firefox SafeMode. <br />
    ''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.'' <br />
    # You can open the Firefox 4/5/6/7 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    # Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. <br />

  • Download folder changed, please help

I was screwing around with some terminal commands and I changed my downloads folder.
The bar with 'name', 'date added' etc has changed and I can't sort my files anymore.
I added a picture showing what it looks like now
Any of you know a command to revert it?

Sometimes settings can get into  a funny state and doing what you did, toggling the setting from what it is to something else and back again, will clear it.
Be careful with the terminal. In a sense you got off with a mild wake up. Most cases of 'I did something in the terminal and now I can't …' usually end with something like boot!

  • How do i change my default download folder?

i cannot change my download folder in FF 3.6.2.

    Bad idea.
I disagree. I like having the desktop set as my download folder, because it serves as an always-present reminder that I need to do something with the downloaded items. In the past, I have fought endless clutter in various other download folders, due to the fact that I was able to forget about them most of the time. When I needed something, it was a hassle to find it in the clutter, but at that moment I didn't typically have time to clean it up.
However, it is important to be aware of the problems related to having too many things on the desktop.

  • Changing Apple Software Updates download folder location

    Hi,
My C drive is full so my computer won't allow me to update iTunes. I have moved Apple Software Updates (as well as my iTunes and media folders) to my D drive but it still downloads the update files to my C drive which doesn't have room to allow the download to happen. Can anyone tell me how to change the download folder location for ASU?
I'm hoping if I can change the location it will work. Any help or other suggestions would be much appreciated!
    Thank you

    HI,
Saving files to the Desktop can lead to poor performance on your Mac, read here.
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7667118#7667118
If you still want to save files to the Desktop regardless, and you can change the default location in Safari Preferences, then make not of your Safari Preferences and then delete this file.
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences.
Move that file to the Trash and restart your Mac. Try Safari Preferences/Downloads, click "Other" and see if you can navigate to the Desktop.
You would be much better off creating a folder and keeping in your Dock.
*"i want my downloads to go to a folder on my desktop called downloads."*
    Name it anything but Downloads.

  • Downloads Folder

    Hey everyone!
I'm sorry if I asked the wrong question in a wrong place. I really do not know where to got to ask this question. Here we go. I know how to change my icons on my Mac from Finder to the trash can, but I do not know how to change my Download Folder, and what not. I mean I know how to change it, but when I change the icon to a basket. The stuff I download are not in the basket. They are usually infront of the basket where you can't see the basket, or behind the basket where you can't see what I downloaded. How can I set it up where I can see the basket, and the stuff in my basket. I know this is a hard question to understand. Maybe some of you do know what I'm talking about, but I do need some help please. I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
    -Tyson

Are you talking about changing the icon that shows up in the Dock where the Downloads stack is? I assume you're using the method where you put an empty file/folder with the icon you want in the Downloads folder (not actually changing the icon of the downloads folder itself).
The Downloads folder is sorted by the date the file was added (so you can see the order in which you downloaded files). You can right-click it and sort by name to keep a certain icon in front (so the basket would show up above the others).
If you update to 10.5.2 or later, another method that might work better (but you wouldn't be able to actually see the stuff in the basket) would be to set the icon of the Downloads folder itself as the basket (Get Info on the basket, click the icon, copy, get info on the downloads folder, click the icon, paste), and then right click and Display As Folder. This will set the downloads Stack to show the basket (and only the basket, with nothing behind or "in" it) as its icon. When you click it, it would still pop out all of the files in the Downloads folder.

  • Jar download folder?

    Hello to all,
i am proving to write code for using with webstart and have a problem. I want to my aplication unzip the jar files that were downloaded but, where does webstart download them? I have searched and i have seen that a structure od folder are created depending of the domain and port. How can i compound the whole tree? Webstart rename some folders and the jar files too. I need the whole path to pass it to my application to catch the jar's from the correct path. And.. is it possible to change the download folder?
    Another question:
Tracing my program, i have seen that webstart doesn't run my program in the jar's download folder. It runs it in my user desktop folder, and so, my program doesn't find any jar to unzip there. Are any way to tell to webstart where to run the application? I.d. the jar download folder.
Thak you very much for you attention

I run into the same problem. The user of the application will need to alter some files to use the
application. There are two possible solutions:
-Store the configuration files on the server
    -Store them locally
Storing them on the servers would be nice however:
->There will have to be a server that automatically stores & sends back files as requested by
the user. Implementing such a server is not trivial on one hand and second, depending on
the network speed and file size can be quite slow. Also, there will have to be a login necessary
    to access files and ...
Ok, I decided to store them locally. I am just about to do it, so that's the plan:
-> ZIP the files to be unpacked on the local system and put them into a .jar file sent as resource
when loading the Java Web Start Application. Accessing will be easy and can be done with:
    this.getClass().getClassLoader().getResourceAsStream("PATH TO ZIP FILE");
The important part is to put the zipped files again into a jar file, that way, unzipping can be
done easy without having to find the jar file on the local file system!

  • Mail.app prefs. fail to change location of Downloads folder.

I recently migrated my mail from Eudora to Mail.app (Mac Pro, OS 10.6.8). I usedthe Mail.app Preferences to change the location of the Downloads (i.e. attachments) folder from the default location (Users>Library>Mail Downloads) to the subfolder in the OS Downloads folder that I used in Eudora. Despite this my attachments still end up in the default location. Help please!
As an aside I would be running straight back to Eudora were it not for the death sentence pronounced by the absence of Rosetta in Lion. Here are some comments that I recently posted to the TidBits newsletter where there is an excellent article by Adam Engst on making the changeover to Mail.app:
The major surprise for me was how really crude the Mail.app experience seems after 14 years of using Eudora. The way Mail handles mailboxes has been a source of major frustration. With Eudora I found it convenient to create separate Eudora Folders for my three accounts, each accessible via an alias of the respective settings file in the dock.  That way I could locate an item that I need much faster than when the mailboxes (and their subfolders) for all three accounts are crammed into a single sidebar - especially as mailbox folders enclosing subfolders will not open with a double click, precise clicking on the triangle is required.  The ability to access mailboxes from the Eudora Mailbox menu - drilling down through successive subfolders, if required - is vastly superior.  Similarly Mail's procedure for moving messages and/or creating rules is really primitive compared to Eudora's facility to create destination mailboxes as part of a single seamless process.  Given that development of Eudora ground to a halt in 2006 one could be forgiven for expecting a lot better from Apple's in-house e-mail client in 2011.

    Mike,
Where in the Sidebar to the Mail window do you see any Sent mailboxes? Is there one beneath the Inbox when viewing at home? Check and report the settings at Mail Preferences/Accounts/Mailbox Behaviors, please. If you have to do this when at home, I understand. There is a way to instruct Mail to use a particular folder for a particular purpose that probably needs to be done on the home computer, but I would like to know those preference settings before proceeding with that.

I am running iTunes on an IBM compatible system running Windows XP with a relatively small hard disk (70gb). I have 4 kids with 4 IPOD Touches, multiple IPOD Nanos, etc. Their apps and album art are eating up the hard disk space. I changed the Media Folder through Edit, Prferences, Advances, iTunes Media Folder to an external hard disk. The new music downloads and purchases go there but the apps and other items do not. How do I get the apps and other iTunes software and downloads to go to the external hard disk

There is no built in function to make this happen.
    Your options are:
    Upgrade the existing hard drive.
Try creating a link for the app folder on the external drive... this may or may not work.
Realistically, a larger hard drive is a better solution, then use the external drive for keeping a backup of the ENTIRE iTunes folder and any other personal data on the system.
