Change between graphic cards - mac crashes

Hi Apple community,
since now two weeks I have a new MacBook Pro. It is my first mac and it is very amazing.
However since the first day I have a problem for which I do not find an answer yet.
As every new MacBook Pro - my MBP do have two graphic cards. In the system preferneces there is the option to switch between them (better battery life or higher performance). When I try to change between these two options I get the - you have to log out - text. Till here everything is fine.
Now when the system logs off and in again my MacOs crashes and and I do have to press the on/off switch menu for few second, reboot my system and even then the system can get bck to normal mode, I have to press the on/off switch once again and only then I can run my Mac again.
Is this normal and if not.... how can this problem be solved
Thanks for your help

Changing graphics cards should not cause a system crash. I'd recommend a call to AppleCare. There's a Contact Us link at the bottom right of this page.

  • Cannot change between graphics cards

    Hello,
I have a problem switching between two graphics cards.
I have used the energy saver option to switch from 9400M to 9600 GT, but now it does not allow me to change it back.
Every time I try, it says it needs to logout, then it logs out but comes back again with 9600 GT.
I have a early 2010 macbook pro and I couldn't find anything over the internet to fix this.
Even the gfxcardstatus program couldn't help.
    Thanks.

  • Flash Player causes Graphic card to crash then recover successfully on two identical systems.

    Hello,
Ever since the latest update with Adobe Flash Player, I've been having problems with flash in general on my computer. My brother has the same exact computer and he also has this issue. I can uninstall Flash Player and the problem stops completely and the moment I install it again, the problem persists. I've looked just about everywhere and figured I'd post it on here for a solution.
    The problem:
The graphic card crashes and then recovers successfully when using Flash Player in general (happens most of the time when listening to a playlist on youtube and when the webpage is loading/changing to the next song). It also causes blue squares to appear on my monitor in random places. Flash videos become disturted and appear as blocks of fuzzy colors representing what they should really be when in full screen watching the video.
Troubleshot to conclude it was Flash Player:
I did extensive research and troubleshooting on my end, the problem started when I updated flash player with the auto-updater. I bench-marked my computer with running multiple programs and games to the maximum effort my computer could handle without flash installed (needless to say, no problem occurred). I then installed flash according to specs and ran a youtube playlist alone on Internet Explorer, the problem did occur. I then tried it with FireFox and Google Chrome, the same problem occurred.
I had my brother reformat his computer and install everything according to spec (all of his drivers are up to date as well) and the problem persisted with his end so I haven't done that, since it'd be to no avail.
I have even uninstalled Flash Player using the uninstaller executable that's supposed to remove everything from Flash Player and tried to install the version that worked prior to the update and it's as if something from Flash isn't being removed because the problem happens with the old version too as well.
Our computer specs are as follows:
    Manufacturer: CyberPower, Inc.
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz
    Memory(RAM): 3.00GB
    System Type: 64-bit Operating System
Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2
Graphic Card: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series (Actual card is ATI Radeon 4850)
If I should post something else, let me know and I will. This problem is kind of annoying to be honest so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time and assistance.

    Hello,
Sadly this does not fix the problem on either computer. The video still comes in distorted while watching videos and the graphic card still crashes on song change while listening to a youtube playlist. The drivers are updated on both computers. As stated, this started happening when auto-updating to the latest version of Adobe Flash Player from the system tray icon. I can't even un-install flash and revert back to the version that worked before this update since it's as if something from Flash Player doesn't get uninstalled when using the uninstaller because the problem happens on all versions of Adobe Flash Player that I've tried. Thanks for your time and assistance.

After changing my graphic card to an ASUS Strix GT 970, Photoshop opens the JPG files without show them on the screen

Try turning off GPU support in your Photoshop's preferences performance section.  Also check that you have installed the latest device driver installed for your GT 970 adapter and that all CS6 updates are installed... Your CS6 should be version 13.0.1.3....

  • Can i change a graphics card in macbook pro retina 15?

Dropped a coke on macbook pro retina 15 and need to change a graphics card can i do it???

The gfx hardware is integral with and soldered to the logic board, so "no" to your question.
If you have a black screen after a spill of a carbonated (= mildly acidic) drink, you've probably zapped more than graphics hardware.
Many such spills are not recoverable. The repair price can approach the cost of a new computer. If you have honmeowners'/renters' insurance, put them on notice of the accident ASAP. Many people have found that their home policy covers accidental damage to electronics including computers, subject to a deductible. Often it's the only financial help you'll get in recovering from a liquid disater.

  • Questions about changing the graphic card

Greetings I need to change the graphic card that came with my computer Pavilion 500-308nrit's GeForce GTX 745 4Gb with GeForce GTX 960now i have couble questions the graghic card that i'm going to buy has a bigger cooling system so is't going to fit inside the case?the GTX 960 require a minimum power supply with 400W so is't gonna be a problem if i changed the power supply?. and is there is a specific power supply that will work better with my PC? and thank you

Hi, The specifications for 500-308nr indicate an external 180 watt power supply supply. Is that true?  If the specifications are correct then you will not be able to install an internal power supply.

  • Mid-2012 RMBPro 10.9.4: Is it possible to switch between graphic cards?  Activity monitor shows the high perf card always active even through no running apps need it.

How does one switch between graphics cards on a RMB Pro that has both a regular and high performance card installed?

There's no control built into OS X to manually switch between them (that I know of). But in your Energy Saver preferences, there is setting called Automatic Graphics Switching that will either keep the discrete GPU on all the time, or automatically switch it off when not in use. Do you already have this preference turned on?
It might keep the high performance graphics card on if it's plugged into AC power, since there is no battery life penalty in that case.

  • Can I change the graphic card on Toshiba Satellite S55-A5295 or add more dedicated video RAM?

Hello, I am wondering if it was possible to change my graphics card. Currently its using the basic (Intel HD Graphics 4000/Family). If thats not possible then I'd also like to know if it was possible to dedicate more video RAM since it currently has 64MB out of the total 1696 avaliable graphics memory. And before someone mentions the BIOS option sadly its not shown there. Please let me know if I have any options!

There is no option to change the GPU on this laptop model. As per memory sharing, it is done automatically by the chipset sharing around 10-20% of the physical memory to the graphics memory.
What will you be using the higher ram?
Is it gaming, media editing (video / photo), or 3D editing?

  • Can I change the graphic card in my Imac 21.5 2012 year

Can I change the graphic card in my Imac 21.5 2012 year.

You can't change the graphics card on 2012 model of iMac (unless you are talking about the THICK iMacs then I don't know). If you do want to change graphics card, then it probably needs expertise on soldering skills. CPU, RAM and HDD/SSD can be changed. The RAM is not soldered in. I have seen someone changed the RAM. Please check iFixit website for information on 2012 iMac:
    https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iMac+Intel+21.5-Inch+EMC+2544+Teardown/11936
Also, don't forget that the screen is glued.

  • Since updating to Mavericks, my graphics card keeps crashing OSX and forcing a reboot. Anything I can do?

    Hello community!
This is the first major problem I've had with my Macbook since I got it over a year ago. This is a 15" Macbook Pro with Retina Display (Mid-2012 - 2.2 GHz).
Everything was fine until I upgraded to Mavericks, and ever since then, my entire system cuts out and has to reboot when trying to do graphically-intense applications. So far, I've had this problem with the following programs:
Safari/Chrome (when playing embedded videos that are not from YouTube)
    Adobe Photoshop CC
    iPhoto (the brand new one)
    Sid Meier's Railroads!
    Civilization V
    Demolition Company
    Roller Coaster Tycoon 3
Preview + Pixelmator (at the same time)
All of these programs are the most recent stable versions.
That this whole problem is being caused by my graphics card is merely an assumption that is based on the list of programs that make it crash. All of the rest of the applications that I use (Mail, Calendar, Tweetbot, iTunes, etc etc etc) run completely flawlessly.
Here's what usually happens - I start a game, for instance. I go through the menus and everything just fine. Once I start an acutal scenario, it loads and finally puts me into the game. It runs and I can interact with the entire UI for about 10-15 seconds, at which point, everything - the screen, the audio, the fans - instantly turn off. It's as quick as someone unplugging a desktop computer.
The computer is unresponsive to me trying to turn it back on for about 30-60 seconds (depending on the app that made it crash). Eventually, the power button "works" and everything comes back. The computer reboots normally, and presents me with an error message.
This has happened dozens of times over the last few weeks, and I can repeat the problem very easily (just open up something on the list!). Below is a crash report that I just got after the one that involved Pixelmator + Preview.
If there's anything that anyone sees that I can do to fix this, I would be extremely appreciative. Thank you so much, everyone!

I went ahead and went into safe mode and uninstalled Parallels Desktop 9 as well as Parallels Access, which I figure were the programs associated with the "culprit" you listed. I uninstalled by dragging them from Applications folder to the Trashbin, which is the only way I know how to uninstall a program as well as the way that Parallels recommends themselves. I shut down the laptop and started it again normally. I didn't bother reinstalling Paralells Desktop yet because I really don't use it that often.
Anyway, I tried a game just to see if it had removed the problem, and it did it again, unfortunately.
I then tried to run the Hardware Test, but it brought up something about an internet test instead of a hardware test. For what it's worth, that ran for about 30 seconds before giving me an error code.
Did I do something wrong, or is there anything else I can try?
EDIT: I tried the Hardware test again, and I ran into the same problem. This time, at least, I got some more details. It's trying to go into "Internet Recovery Mode," and I run into error code -1006D.
EDIT 2: Also, here's the Crash report from the one just now:

    #29: Need AGP Graphics card
    Shane's Stock Answer #29
    You either need to either:
    1) use the following hack -
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/finalcut_pro_on_oldmacs.html
    or
    2) Upgrade to FCP 5

  • Graphics card Mac Pro (Early 2008) What is supported

I desperatly need a new Graphics Card for my Early 2008 Mac Pro.
Bellow are the listed and supported graphics cards from apple site.
None of the cards listed for early 2008 is possible (Very hard) to get here in Norway.
I've read some treads here saying that ATI Radeon HD 5870 will work on Early 2008 Mac Pro.
    - Can someone please verify that this will work?
    - On the Note for early 2009 The radeon HD 5870 card requires Mac OS X v10.6.4 or later and it requires the use of both auxiliary power connections?

Note: The radeon HD 5870 card requires Mac OS X v10.6.4 or later and it requires the use of both auxiliary power connections.

    Robban1978,
I have 27 Apple Mac Pro's (between work/office, home, and clients), and have four Apple Mac Pro's (just at home) and I have purchased the Diamond Radeon HD 7970 graphics cards (7970PE53GHZ) for each of the 27 computers and the graphics cards do work great in all of my Apple Mac Pro computers (2008, 2010, and two 2012 Apple Mac Pro).
The only problem is that I have to boot directly into Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 to use the graphics cards because Diamond/Radeon/AMD have not released graphics drivers for the Radeon 7970 for OS X 10.8.x Mountain Lion (as of yet?)

Hopefully AMD/Radeon/Diamond will release updated graphics drivers for OS X 10.8.x Mountain Lion, and I believe the Diamond Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition graphics card is probably the best graphics card out on the market (based on it's price/performance), the only problem/issue is there are no OS X 10.8.x Mountain Lion drivers for the Radeon HD 7970 series graphics cards yet.
Hopefully AMD/Radeon/Diamond will work on developing and releasing OS X 10.8.x Mountain Lion drivers.

  • Can I change a graphic card settings

    Hello,
Can I change my ATI graphic card settings. (configure depth of field, blur texture details etc.)
    Thank you,
    Can

Your specific examples suggest to me that you may find the following controls useful. Starting from the Apple menu (top left of the desktop) open 'System Preferences...'. You will find a setting for 'font smoothing' in the 'General' panel. In the 'Displays Panel' you can set the display resolution and colour calibration. If you have impaired eyesight then the 'Accessibility' panel will be helpful.
Other things are normally controlled by the application and are controllable only if the developer chooses to offer the settings under 'Preferences...'. Most applications involving text will offer the Fonts panel for you to select typeface and styles but Mac developers are discouraged from exposing users to low-level settings. Apple's view is that properly designed applications should 'just work' and require users to make as few decisions as possible.
My advice is not to bother trying to make Mac OS X reproduce the behaviour and aesthetic of Window; if you want Windows, install Windows, it works great on Mac hardware. Otherwise, just relax and go with the flow. After a few days you'll get used to how things are done and after a few weeks you won't want to turn back.
    C.
