Change computer's name?

At the very top of the tree I have my computer's name, I seem to remember during the setup process that the name I typed (for something) would be set forever, I think it could be this as I find no way to change it.
Is the computer's name set in stone and if not how do I change it please.

The Computer Name can be be changed in System Preferences >> Sharing >> Computer Name

  • Change Computer Network Name

    Hi all,
I'm trying to change the network name of my computer that windows pcs use to connect. Currently, to connect to my computer, I have to type "\\new-host.linksys\" in explorer to connect to my macbook. I've found where to change the "workgroup" that the computer connects to, but I can't seem to find where to change that new-host.linksys to something like macbook.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I would suggest you download Bonjour for windows.
Then once installed you windows pc's can connect to your computer using its machine name.
if you goto your sharing preferences and give your mac a name such as macbook
then its bonjour name is macbook.local

Go to the control panel and then to user accounts. Select the Change Your Account Name option. Change the account name from Test to Christina.
That should do it for you.

  • How to change computer network name?

We're swapping 2 computers in our office. How would I change their network names to represent their new user/location? As well as changing the computer's user account?
The way our current setup is that each room has a name, and the room name is the computer network name as well as the user account name.

you mean the computer name is like "iMac-24inch-at-room-1.local" when you browse the networks ?
If so, Just change it in System Preferences->Sharing.
or the wireless SSID, eg. Airport connected to "Room 1" ?
if this is the case, just select the new room BS and set that in Airport Pref network.

  • Change computer's name - network

    Hi All,
Am about to network 3 iMacs in an office. I would like to change the name of the computers - so they're more easily identifable.
Before I do, I wanted to check I can edit the Computer name (in Sharing, right?) without nasty side effects to files etc that use the existing name.
Any ideas? All help greatly appreciated.

Thanks Kappy - everything (two computers at present) is backed up to Time Machine/Capsule ... I'll change that too.
Phew - that would have been close.

  • Where to change computer's name?

My brother just bought an iMac and I've been trying to help him via the phone to get things set up. He's a switcher and so there's some interesting communication that happens. I have a new found respect for anyone who does phone help-desk troubleshooting.
One non-critical issue is that the iMac somehow ended up with his wife's name on the intitial account. I helped him set up a new account with the proper privleges, but when he does things like add printers, the location show's up as "Sharon's iMac". Annoying.
How do you rename the computer?

Thanks! Exactly what I was looking for.
Talking with somone is easier than email, but it can get pretty frustrating when you're trying to walk someone through a process but can't see what they see. So many of the things I do automatically and take for granted are completely new to him and it requires a good deal of patience. I wouldn't want to do it for a living!

  • Noob ? How change computer name

I've Googled my brains out and can't find the answer, and I did RTFM. But still can't figure out how to change the name in name column of the computer list.
When I add them the name appears as the IP address on some, as the full DNS name on some, and as the regular text name (e.g. Bill's Computer) on others. For the life of me, I can't find any way to change the one's with IP address to names.
    Anyone know how?

The ones with IP address are users that probably don't even know they can name their machine, much less where top do it.
Shouldn't the IT department be the ones who name the computers, so as to keep them conformed to a standard naming convention? Are the systems not installed from a master image, all preconfigured? Sounds like bad computer management.
Regardless, changing the DNS name in the ARD admin app can be done by right clicking on any client and choosing Get Info.
However this will not change the DNS entry for the computer on your DNS server.

  • Authentication popups after computer name changed to computer record name

    Hi
I'm not sure if anyone else is facing this issue, but I have been unable to find anything in the forums.
I have setup a number of client machines on Lion Server, all using 10.7.4. I used WGM and Remote Desktop to make some changes and deploy software
Since then, I have been getting the following authentication popup on all client machines (twice after login, and then every 30 mins or so afterwards):
Mac OS S wants to make changes. Type an administrator's name and password to allow this.
The changes made prior to this happening were:
    - Overplay VPN installed (using RD pkg install)
    - Adobe CS 5.5 installed (using Adobe Enterprise Deployment Tool and RD package install)
    - Evernote installed (using RD copy)
    - Set computer name to computer record name (From WGM > Computer Groups > Preferences > Options)
I have now removed all the installed software from one machine, and log in as administrator, unbind the machine, rename the computer manually to the record name, rebind the computer.
As far as I can see, I have reverted all changes one at a time, and am still receiving the admin password requests when logged in as a network user.
The only machine that seems to be ok, is the one where the name change to computer record name was unsuccessful.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can fix this issue?
    Thanks
    Suraj

Issue resolved. It turns out none of my changes caused the issue as much as Google Chrome Autoupdates. The new version constantly checks for updates which makes clients on Lion Server go haywire. Solution to turn off auto-updating:
    Open a Terminal window:
    defaults write com.google.Keystone.Agent checkInterval 0
    Relaunch Chrome.

  • Change Computer name from previous ower's

My computer still is named Matt's Computer from the previous owner. How do I change it?

You'll need admin privileges; go to System Preferences, click on the 'Sharing' preference pane. The computer's name is displayed at the top. Just click on it and change to whatever you want.

  • Changeip command? Trying to view or change the DNS name of a computer.

Hey guys, I did a time machine on computer but it is still remembering the old DNS name.
I looked it up and it looks like you can use the changeip command to change the DNS name but when i try and run the command it says changeip command not found.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Hi
Apple have changed (sic) the changeip command. In 10.6 Server it now does not have the same functionality it used to have in previous versions. Reason being it was not always successful in doing what it was supposed to do. To change the hostname use scutil:
    sudo scutil --set HostName thenameyouwant
The changeip command does not exist on the client OS.

  • Change main computer user name

I purchased a computer that was on display. Someone had gone in and put in a user name I went to change the user name and it changed only for logging in. When I go to download something or save something that name is still there. How can I change it?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Seems like everyone here is answering the wrong question
Bea, you need to create a new account and then transfer the profile from the old account over to the new one.  You just renamed your logon account and that left the folders still referring to the previous account name; among other things.
Please refer to this forum link for detailed step by step directions on how to do this -

  • How do I change my computer's name?

Right now my computer's name is my first and last name and then 15" G4 powerbook. How do I go about changing the name(if I can). Because when I am in a wireless network I find the name a bit too revealing of my identity. Thanks.

    Hi Sepehr --
Here's everything you need to know: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh632.html
Short answer: Go to System Preferences (click the Apple menu in the upper left-hand corner of your screen) > click on the "Sharing" preference pane and just type in whatever name you wish in the space provided.
