Change default alarm

Hi chaps, when I add an event to iCal it's alarm for email defaults to 15 minutes before, I always change this to 1 day before, is there a way of changing the default please ? Regards Roger

See here for BBEdit, however you don't need to be editing the plist file using an advanced text editor to do this.
The terminal has a defaults command that allows to to do this without messing around your preference files with a text editor (to my mind a sure recipe for disaster if you don't know what you are doing).
Quit iCal.
Open the terminal (Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
Copy the line below (changing the word Tink to the name of the sound you want) into the Terminal window and press return
defaults write com.apple.iCal 'Default alarm sound' 'Tink'
Open iCal, new default alarms should now use that sound.
Best wishes

  • Possible to change default alarm from "Message with Sound" to "Email"?

I was wondering if there is a way to change the default alarm when creating an event in iCal, from "Message with sound" to "Email". The option is not available in preferences, and I was just hoping that there might be a way to change the default, using Terminal, and if not, perhaps there is another way. If anyone knows of a way to accomplish this, I’d sure appreciate it.
Thanks very much for your help.

Your not alone - I'm also looking for a solution to this problem.

  • How to change default alarm sound for events

I remember initially when setting up ical, it gave an option to set a default sound for messages. I want to change the sound, but cannot find the option to do so. currently when creating a nerw event, the message with sound option shows up with the default sound (Basso) that I selected initially. And I have to change it manually every time a new event is created. Is there a way to change the default sound?

Settings > Sounds > Calendar. Maybe it was inaudible because yoursound was not turned up.

  • How can I change the default alarm for events in ical?

    How to change default alarm

I've been curious about this issue as well. I think it would be nice if there were more options to select the default alarm... from within the preferences themselves. Even being able to choose how many days before vs. always figuring out how many minutes are in multiple days.
While someone has found a method for changing the sound to accompany messages, users are still not able to select the type. I prefer message only (no sound), although I supposed this is the same as the current default minus any sound. I tried blank and "" entries for 'Default alarm sound' in the .plist file with no success (blank reverts back to Basso, and "" just didn't work).
I wonder if there are some other items that could be listed in the .plist file to offer more choices such as "Default alarm type". Is there a way to figure out what key variables/values iCal uses for? Someone must have figured out that iCal will look in the .plist file for a 'default sound value'. I'm guessing that there are more of these values that could be set by the user.
A similar question - it would be nice to be able to set the default alarm time for all-day events. I suppose it doesn't matter all that much since 11:45pm probably means I'll just get the message the next morning; I still guess I'd prefer something like 8am though.
    Forgive the novel...

  • How do you set/change the default alarm TYPE in iCal?

I like to think I'm a power user, but this one I just can't figure out.  The question/problem is: How do you sent the default alarm TYPE in iCal?  The problem is illustrated in the picture below in the blue circled area.
Specifically, whenever I set a new event in iCal, it defaults to this window with the default alert being "Default (1 hour before)."  The one hour before is fine, but the problem is, WHAT is the default?  It seems to be just a sound, but that's not good enough to actually alert me of anything.
The goal I'm trying to achieve with this post is to determine how to CHANGE the "default" new event alert FROM "Default (1 hour before)" TO one of two alerts that I actually find useful:  I want MY "default" new event alert to be either "email" to the primary address, OR, "Message with Sound".
    Any ideas, folks?  Thanks.

Understand.  I am in the edit mode for my contact.  I see all the contact info.  There is no right click or other means to change the DEFAULT address that autofill uses (it also is first to appear if I type my name in an e-mail). For instance for a group e-mail you can change the default addresses of each contact by control-clicking on the group in Address Book. I can't seem to make the default change in my v-card.

  • How do I change default sound for alarm on iphone 5c?

I don't like the default sound for my alarm on my iPhone 5c. How do I go change the default so I won't have to continually change it?

I know it's important to customize your device naivebelle. I'm sorry to hear that you are not pleased with the alarm tone on your Razr M. If you have already checked the main volume settings, I have attached a link for notification sounds. http://vz.to/1jEbaq4 I'm sorry we don't have specific information on changing the alarm sound specifically. This is likely just a slight change within the new OS itself.

  • Default alarms changed.  Why?

For many moons since, my iCal default alarm in Inspector has been to send an email to me, which is what I wanted.
Recently and with no known action by me, (I cannot with certainty say when but perhaps with the upgrade from OSX.6.5 to OSX.6.6?) the default alarm in Inspector has changed to Sound / Basso / 5 hours before.
How can I get this to go back to my preferred email default and why has it suddenly changed?
I've looked in Preferences and can see no way of changing it, nor can I find anything which I might be able to change elsewhere.
    Many thanks in advance.

May I trespass on your collective good will and resurrect this query? It's still driving e nuts!
Another thread (here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12785168&#12785168) talks about changing the default alarm sound, but I want to change the default alarm type.
I'm very nervous about altering "standard" files as I'm highly likely to screw things up, so can anyone help me change the Alarm default to email rather than an alert sound?
Given simple instructions (+very very+ simple!) I'm prepared to have a go at editing things, but only if they are really really simple and understandable by a lobotomised amoeba!
Until an update a while back, email was the [my?] default, but it's now Basso sound which is absolutley useless for my needs.
I know I can change it manually every time, but that is a right royal pain in the fundament and I often forget.
    Thanks in advance.

  • How to change iCal alarm defaults

I have one frequent event that requires an alarm when I put it on iCal.  However there is no consistency to when that event occurs so each must be entered manually.  This event can occur up to 6 times a month.  When I set the alarm each time, the default is 11:45 the night before.  I would rather have the default be same day at 8 am.  Is there a way to change the default so I don't have to change each alarm event manually?

If it takes a while to input new information, it might be quicker to duplicate the event and change the due date & time. I don't think you can specify a time in the default, just minutes prior to.

  • Can i change the default alarm sound on Iphone 4s

Can the default alarm sound be changed for new alarms. My mother got an Iphone 4s recently and she can use Siri to set alarms for her, however the default alarm sound is always chosen and that is just not a loud enough sound. And it takes a some messing about to change the sound of the alarm and my 60 year old mother has trouble with changing it.
Is there any way i can make it change perminently, any help would be much appriciated.

The default alarm sound is the last sound you used.

  • Changing default Calendar alarms in Mavericks' Calendar?

Is there any way that I can change the default Calendar alarm to email?
I don't use the "pop-up" on screen alarm, which appears to be the default, because that relies on me being in front of the iMac at the time whereas I can read email alarms on any computer (even at Client's premises) wherever I am, and having to remeber to change every single appointment to "email to" is a positive nuisance.
I seem to recall this was possible a couple of generations ago in iCal on Snow Leopard but the option was inexplicably removed in a no doubt "improving" update!
Surely Apple should provide the option to change the default alarm to personal preference?
Or am I being stupid and overlooking something obvious?
    Thanks in advance.

As a long-time Apple user, Apple evangelist and stockholder (I bought the stock when it was $41/share), I'm really annoyed with the numerous issues in the latest version of OSX. In all the years I've used Macs, this is the first time I really feel like their new version is simply not ready for primetime.
And it's not just the inablility to customize alerts in Calendar. The iWork app suite (Numbers, Pages, etc.), also has major issues, e.g., no more initial caps when typing.
Many of these changes are reportedly due to Apple's desire to increase cross-device and iCloud capability between the Mac and various IOS devices. Apple is also touting the fact that the iWork suite is now free and supposedly simpler.
Don't get me wrong. OSX 10.9 Mavericks is extremely stable. And there are many new features which certainly improve my overall computing experience. But a major unintended consequence of these "upgrades" and "improvements" is the sacrifice of basic functionality.

  • How to change default alerts in iCal?

    Hello.
Every time you add a new event in iCal, the Info panel of the event contains a series of default alerts that you may want to add to it. However, all of them are useless to me (e.g.: "Send email to <my address> 4 days after), so I need to manually edit them event by event. Anybody knows how to change them? I have already inspected all the plist files related to ical, and looked inside the ical package content, but I found no indication of where to change these values. Using iCal version 5.0.2
    Thanks,
    l

John: Thank you, this is exactly what I wanted. I was indeed inspecting the plist with bbedit, but what I did not realize is that the file has some parts which are binary, so I could not see the PersistentMenu-lastUsedAlarms part by using a text editor. I opened it with Xcode and I did find what you were saying, and erased all the junk that was in there. In fact, the issue I had was also described here:
    http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Uk/uk.comp.sys.mac/2010-06/msg02349.html
For some reason, it looks like after some upgrade the program adds were some positive values in the plist and I was stuck with default alarms that were set *after* the events I wanted to set an alarm for.
I did what you suggested, then added by hand new values to the PersistentMenu part of the plist, and I am now happy.
For everybody's information, to know what I did, it is enough to know to add Dictionary items to the  PersistentMenu-lastUsedAlarms, with 3 fields:
-- AlarmTypeKey (this determines if you want a sound, or else an email, or else the other default alarm type keys. For example, sending an email is a Number, value 4; having a message with sound is a Number, value 3)
-- AlarmDurationKey: This is a Number, in seconds, that determines when you want your alarm to trigger. E.g: -172800 will be two days before. Must be negative for "before", of course)
-- AlarmParameterKey: This is a String, where you store the value that you want the alarm to have. For example, if you want an email to be sent, the AlarmTypeKey will be 4, as explained above, and this field will contain your email address. Instead, if you want the alarm to be a sound, the AlarmTypeKey will be 3 and this field will have the name of the sound you want (e.g., Basso).
That's it. Thanks a lot for the solution!

  • Default alarm for all-day events

When I set up iCal, I used a default alarm at 11 pm for ALL-DAY events.  I don't stay up that late anymore, and now I have to manually reset the alarm to a more sane time every time I enter an all-day event.  How do I change the default to earlier?  Note: This is not the same default as for regular timed events ... that one I can change in Preferences.

Well, I couldn't figure this one out, so I just moved the calendars back to my main machine, and published them to the web for sharing with my laptop. On my main machine they worked fine.
Can't figure out why it wouldn't work on the server. Maybe it'll change with Leopard's iCal server.

  • ICal default alarm

I have iCal preferences set up to automatically create an Alarm 15 minutes prior to the scheduled event. When an event is set up as "all-day", the alarm will go off at 11:45pm the prior day. This makes total sense on why Apple does this and it is pretty obvious that a user can change the alarm start time. However, if my preferences have been set up that my day starts at 8:00am and ends at 5:00 (my work day), wouldn't it make more sense that an event that you create as "all-day" default to an alarm start time of 8:00am (user start time preference) and not at midnight. Why would I want an alarm to go off at 11:45pm when I'm in bed sleeping? It would make more sense for the alarm to go off at 7:45 am (15 minutes prior to my day start preference).
is there a defaults write com.apple.iCal setting that I can change to make this happen?

No response from anyone from Apple on this. I did find that you can tell iCal to set a default alarm +- minutes. So If you set an all day event and want the alarm to go off at 8:00 am, you would go into iCal preferences and set default alarm to go off -480 minutes. That works good for all day events but the thing that stinks is when you go to set up a new event that only lasts from say 4:00pm - 5:00pm, this default setting will set an alarm 8 hours AFTER the time. Not what you really want. So, the answer I'm afraid is to go into each event that you need an alarm set, and change the alarm time manually. I'm hoping this will change in a future update due to the many MS people that don't like this default setting.

  • N82 Only default alarm tone

I'm having the strangest problem: i can't change my alarm tone. I have a microSD card inserted, it has mp3s on it, the phone recognizes each and every one of them, i use some of them as ringtones etc. So everything seems to be working.
However, when i want to change the alarm tone, i have only 3 options: default; download new; off. I've tried creating a new alarm, editing my current, changing the tone in Personalise-> Tones (same options). Nothing worked.
    Please, help me.

  • How change default alert in Calendar?

    Hello
Because the default sound "Basso" isn't the best alert sound for me I want to change the default sound of Calendar items in Mountain Lion.
I was able to do this in the past, with Lion, but unfortunately this isn't possible anymore I see...
Changing the com.apple.iCal.plist file doesn't help, since this plist file doesn't exist anymore.
And despite what I saw on several websites (see http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/80_os_x_mountain_lion_tips_and_tricks#slid e-3), I can't change this in Calendar neither (see image here below)
I checked the settings in notification centre, where I can choose to have sound alerts for calendar, or not, but cannot adapt the default sound.
    Can you please help?

    Hi,
here is a solution that is working for me in 10.9.5 (thanks to Wakko from http://iszene.com/thread-165772-post-1927711.html#pid1927711)
    (Make TimeMachine backup)
    Quit calendars
Go to ~/Library/Calendars. Here, for each calendar there is a folder with its UUID (i. e. 9C36543C-8BA1-4264-8E3F-C1BB9FB207BE.calendar). To find out what calendar it is referring to open info.plist within it. Chose the calendar's folder you want to change the alarm sound for. It should also be containging the folder /LocalDefaultAlarms with the two files EventAllDayAlarms.icsalarm and EventTimedAlarms.icsalarm. If it does not open calendars and create a test event in that calendar. Go to 2.
Open EventAllDayAlarms.icsalarm and EventTimedAlarms.icsalarm. Find the line ATTACH;VALUE=URI:basso and change basso to the sound you like. I had to place the sound file in /System/Library/Sounds.
(By the way: If you want to change the default hour for alerts for all day events, change TRIGGER:-PT15H accordingly. PT stands for pacific time, -PT15H means 9 AM (15 hours before beginning of the day).)
    Reboot
EventAllDayAlarms.icsalarm and EventTimedAlarms.icsalarm are re-created and reset to basso each time calendar prefs are saved. So, in order to prevent overwriting your manual settings accidentally, set them to read only.
    Good luck!
    Florian
