Change default boot display, is it possible?

Hi!
I have MSI N660 TF 2GD5 OC card with two devices connected: 1) LCD monitor via DVI-D, 2) Projector via DVI-A.
Every time I turn on the PC I don't see anything on monitor until Windows starts. Video output during boot process goes to projector even though it's turned off.
Is it possible to change default output during system start up?
Swapping connectors isn't possible physically, because DVI-A have extra pins that won't fit to another socket.
If not, whats socket "default priority"? I'm thinking of buying hdmi cable for my projector to fix issue, will it help?

The dual link DVI-I connector you are most likely using for the DVI-A device is the primary connector. If it is connected to any display it will always be used for primary display when starting.
Solution would be to use the Projector with a DVI-A or I to HDMI or Displayport adapter or DVI-A or I to DVI-D adapter so you can use the monitor with the DVI-I connector.

  • How do I change default boot sequence?

I just got a K8T Ne0 FIS2R.  I am booting to a SATA 120G drive that has Win XP Prof loaded up.  When I attach my IDE drives, I have to stop the post (F11) to manually point to "BBS-0 RAID" or my machine will default to an IDE drive (which ever is plugged in) and give me "NTLDR not loaded."
Can I change the default boot sequence (i.e. so that I don't have to manually stop-n-point every time)?
All my drives (1 SATA, 2 IDE) work once I point to the right startup device (SATA 120G).
    Thanks for any helpful hints.

  • Set default boot display in dual-head setup

    Hi,
Mac Pro 2010 with AMD Radeon 5770.  One display attached via DVI, the other via DVI plus a DVI-to-DisplayPort adapter cable.
No matter which way I plug these displays in, it's always the display I consider to be the secondary one that displays the boot screen, and FileVault 2 FDE password prompt.  This display is seldom switched on, and I have it disabled during daily use using SwitchResX so that my pointer doesn't stray.  Having to switch it on purely for the purposes of boot is frustrating.
So, is there some fail-safe way to force the boot screen and FDE prompt to always appear on the primary display?  I found a thread that reported using PRAM or NVRAM resetting to contrive this, but it transpired that it was not a permanent fix.
Please, don't recommend I simply unplug the secondary monitor.

The primary display is the one that holds the tiny white stripe representing the MenuBar in this presentation in system Preferences > Displays:
Drag the white stripe to the display you would like to be Primary.

  • Possible to move boot display to different DVI port? (GTX780)

I doubt this is possible, but just in case : is it possible to force boot screens to a different port on the video card?
The MSI GTX780 has two DVI ports - one DVI-I (which includes analog display) and DVI-D (which does not). The DVI-I port displays the boot screen, BIOS, and anything that shows before Windows is fully loaded.
I currently have two monitors. My primary monitor can connect via DVI, and since it is a 120HZ monitor, it currently uses a dual link cable. The secondary monitor is older and cannot connect via DVI, so I use a DVI-I-to-VGA adapter and a standard VGA cable for that display. Unfortunately, this means that the secondary monitor shows boot/BIOS/etc.
Is it possible to move the boot display to the DVI-D port on the card?
Please note that this is not a big issue - having the secondary monitor show boot info is a minor annoyance at worst. The secondary monitor also has HDMI-in, so I can buy a cable and use that, and then move the primary monitor to the DVI-I port. I do want to avoid spending more money, but mostly, I want to see if it is possible to force the boot screens to another port. This seems like it might be a very interesting way to learn about the video card (and VBIOS, if changing that is necessary to do this).
    Thank you.

In the "Arrangement" pane of "Displays" System Preference, drag the picture of the menu bar to the picture of the other display.

  • Dual Booting Windows 7/8 - Two Separate Hard Drives App to Change Default OS

    Hi Guys
I would like to make an app to change the default OS to boot to so users can run a desktop app on either os to restart and boot to the other one hopefully by just changing the registry
The win 7 ssd is efi  the win 8.1 also but only 1 partition win 7 is disk 0 with the efi part
If its possible via altering a reg key where would i find it ?
    Chris Cullen

    Hi,
The dual boot information is stored in the bcd file in the system reserved partition, also, you can see the boot option by typing “msconfig” at the command line window, there will be two options if you have two systems
    installed on your computer:
You can set one as the default boot system, the boot information isn’t stored in the registry key, so, I am afraid altering the registry won’t help.

adobe acrobat pro x change the program's default page display to single page view - Windows 8, HP Laptop

Since there were no answers, I will take a stab at a reponse. For the 2nd method, I suspect you could simply select the print or press job options to get the desired results or turn off "use local fonts" in Acrobat. If you check the font list, the fonts are probably not embedded and that is likely the problem.
I noticed that you have both Reader and Acrobat installed and that might cause some conflict, but should not be the issue here. If you were to uninstall Reader, you would have to repair Acrobat. The conflict here is that you might have problems with the one opening when you want the other. If it works for you, then don't worry about it.
For technique 1, I suspect you may be using IE 9 that has apparently been a problem since it came out. I have refused to install it. However, it may simply be that PDF Maker does not work correctly with your browser, or got deactivated and needs to be allowed to run in your browser (IE I am assuming).

  • Boot Display Device suddenly changing upon reboot

This issue was first reported to Lenovo support back in February, when the latest BIOS was 2.10, and I first noticed it even earlier, with the previous BIOS version (I just don't remember whether it was 2.07 or 2.09), and back then my T61 was running Windows XP Professional SP2, and Intel GMA Driver version was 6.14.10.4860. It is stilll there with BIOS v2.21, and  Windows XP Professional SP3, and Intel GMA Driver v. 6.14.10.4926, so it seems to be a more general problem, and I would like to know whether anybody else has run into problems of this kind,
The problem description follows. I use my T61 both undocked and docked (in my Advanced Mini Dock, P\N 42W4631) at different times. I also have an HP LP1965 LCD monitor connected to my Advanced Mini Dock via a DVI-I cable. It is usually set into the portrait position; in addition, I have my desktop PC connected to the other input of that HP LP1965, and the monitor is often in use with that desktop PC when I switch my T61 on. For those reasons, I want to have Boot Display Device always set to "ThinkPad LCD" in the BIOS, in order to always be able to see POST and Windows boot progress on my T61 screen. However, whenever I set Windows to use the second display (i.e., LP1965 connected via DVI), and then reboot my T61, the Boot Display Device in BIOS settings is automatically reset to "DVI+LCD". It happens irrespectively of the way I set it to use the second display: I can switch it through either Windows display settings or Intel GMA driver tray control panel, and it can be in either extended desktop or Intel Dual Display Clone mode; in either case, as soon as I reboot my T61 (or switch it off and then on), the BIOS setting is "DVI+LCD". On the other hand, if I set Windows to use the second monitor, then reboot, set Boot Display Device to "DVI+LCD", then set Windows to use the ThinkPad display only, and reboot again, the Boot Display Device in the BIOS settings is automatically reset to "ThinkPad LCD", which may also be inconvenient for some users. I.e., to make it short, when T61 is docked, 'single monitor' configuration under Windows always forces 'ThinkPad LCD" as Boot Display Device in BIOS settings after reboot, and any 'dual monitor' configuration under Windows always forces "DVI+LCD" as Boot Display Device after reboot.

After many updates, including the latest BIOS (2.26), the problem is still there. I must say it is quite an annoyance for me.
When purchsing my T61, one of the key reasons I chose it over other brands was the idea of reliability, good support, etc. rather than performance as such. It is a pity Lenovo cannot fix nor even comment on that problem. (It was reported to Lenovo's official support long ago.)

If you're having trouble making changes to files that are inside your home folder (represented by a house icon in the sidebar of a Finder window), or if you can't get changes to the settings of an application to stick, then please see below.
    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password dialog will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
In the dialog, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if it's not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if it's not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Change default btrfs subvolume - GRUB problem

grub-mkconfig  creates a grub.cfg with this kernel command line:
    linux /vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=88e4e9db-0d5d-4055-bb36-6c4bc3454cb3 rw rootflags=subvol=SB0 quiet video=hyperv_fb:1920x1080
my problem lies in rootflags=subvol=SB0 where is named a specific btrfs subvolume.
I would like no subvolume be specified in grub.cfg so that the default one will be mounted as root filesystem.
The reason is I have arch installed into btrfs subvols and I would like to choose which arch variant to boot simply changing default subvol.
(I've used the installation tips found at http://www.funtoo.org/BTRFS_Fun )
    This is btrfs root :
    ~/bin > mount /dev/sda2 -o subvolid=0 /mnt
    ~/bin > btrfs filesys show /mnt
    Label: none uuid: 88e4e9db-0d5d-4055-bb36-6c4bc3454cb3
Total devices 1 FS bytes used 3.47GiB
    devid 1 size 126.81GiB used 6.04GiB path /dev/sda2
    btrfs-progs v3.19.1
    /etc/fstab :
    ~/bin > cat /etc/fstab
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    # /dev/sda2
    UUID=88e4e9db-0d5d-4055-bb36-6c4bc3454cb3 / btrfs rw,relatime,space_cache 0 0
    # /dev/sda1
    UUID=df2d9bbc-ab0a-42a5-96ae-7c90f0c15a0e /boot ext3 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 2
    These are the subvolumes:
    ~/bin > btrfs subvol list /mnt
    ID 260 gen 5129 top level 5 path SB0
    ID 264 gen 4975 top level 260 path SB0/var/lib/machines
    ID 265 gen 5092 top level 5 path SB1
SB1 is a snapshot of SB0 and both contain an arch installation
    SB1 is default one:
    ~/bin > btrfs subvol get-default /mnt
    ID 265 gen 5092 top level 5 path SB1
but if I run grub-mkconfig it picks up SB0, in my opinion the wrong one.
Please note that SB0 is currently mounted as system root:
    ~/bin > findmnt -o SOURCE,TARGET,FSTYPE,FSROOT /
    SOURCE TARGET FSTYPE FSROOT
    /dev/sda2[/SB0] / btrfs /SB0
Is it possible to tell to grub-mkconfig to not name any specific subvol ?
    If you look into: /etc/grub.d/10_linux
and search for "btrfs"  it may give an hint, but I don't understand it.
    many thanks in advance
    Andrea
EDIT: of course, if I change kernel command line by hand (:s/SB0/SB1) it works as expected, but it's not I'm looking for, being grub.cfg an automatically generated file.

I don't use GRUB anymore, but I don't recall it requiring a specified subvolume to boot, however if you've installed to a specific subvolume (SB0 in your case), then you will need to to tell GRUB where to look more specifically than just the device and partition (/dev/sda2).
What might accomplish what you're asking for is to set up seaparate boot entries for the respective subvolumes / installation variants.  Basically manually add another "menuentry" in /boot/grub/grub.cfg and change the subvolume specified:
    /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    menuentry "Arch Linux - SB0" {
    linux /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sda2 rootflags=subvol=SB0
    menuentry "Arch Linux - SB1" {
    linux /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sda2 rootflags=subvol=SB1
You'd need to fiddle with /etc/fstab a then since I'm pretty sure something would freak out if you tried to mount two subvolumes to / at the same time (e.g., duplicate entries with different subvolumes specified).  A much simpler solution would be separate root partitions with shared /boot and /home partitions.  Like so (subvolumes would even be optional):
    /dev/sda1 ext3 /boot
    /dev/sda2 btrfs / *"menuentry" in /boot/grub/grub.cfg > title "Arch Linux - SB0"
    /dev/sda3 btrfs / *"menuentry" in /boot/grub/grub.cfg > title "Arch Linux - SB1"
    /dev/sda4 btrfs /home
Basically you have two separate installations, which is what it sounds like you're asking for that can be selected at boot time and share a /home partition.  The fstabs in each root would only differ at the / partition entry.
