Change default mail program without setting up account

I want to set a different mail application as my default, but my understanding is that you have to do that from within Mail on OSX. Every time I open Mail, it asks me to set up an account, but I don't want/need to set up an account, and I can't get to the prefs window (to change my default mail program) without setting up an account. Help!

Hi, yes, that's one silly thing about OSX, one way around it is a Pref Pane called RCDefaultApp 2.1...

  • Changing your default mail program

Not that I have anything against the Mac Mail program that came with my Mac, but does anyone know how to change the default mail program to MS Office Entourage? If I am on a website and I click a link to send an e-mail, it always brings up the Mac Mail program that I don't use. Thanks for any help you can give.

    River City Rat,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Open Mail and select Preferences...>General>Default Email Reader: (Choose Entourage).

  • Make Entourage default mail program for composing?

Hey folks. I'm trying to get Entourage to be teh default mail program for composing mail as well as reading mail. I already set it to be default for reading mail from the Mail program, bt when I click a "send to" someone type link, Mail keeps popping up. How do I change that? Thanks.

    DrSupachicken,
In Mail Preferences you can set your default mail reader to the preferred application. Which one is curently set as your default? I don't have Entourage installed so I Mail (3.5) is the only option. In your case you should be able to select either Entourage or Mail. Let me know if that helps.

  • Changing default email program for Control Click file to use Outlook

    Hi,
We have an interesting issue when when you Control click a file and select "New email with Attachment" it always brings up Mail, I want to change this to Outlook (latest office for Mac). I have checked everywhere for this setting and made sure Outlook is set as the default mail program everywhere.
Can someone point me in the right direction and this would be a quick win for out customer.
    Thanks,
    Bob James

"New Email with Attachment" is a Service provided by Mail.app. To use Outlook, you would need an Outlook service. If Microsoft doesn't provide one, it might be possible to make your own using Automator. If you search, somebody might have already done that.

  • Default Mail Program and Mail

Rather than Mail.app that came with my iMac, I want to use Thunderbird as my default mail program which I have set as such in Preferences in both Mail and Thunderbird.
However, I keep receiving an occasional email in the Mail.app rather than in Thunderbird - and it doesn't even appear in Thunderbird but only in Mail.
I would like to receive all of my email in Thunderbird rather than Mail. How can I make sure this will happen? Should I rename Mail.app to something else?
I would appreciate any suggestions you may have; and also, if you have good reasons for this not to be done, please let me know in a kindly manner. Because I became use to using Thunderbird in my PC, I feel more comfortable with it and would like to continue using it.
    Thanks for your help.

This doesn’t make sense. What you’ve chosen as the default mail program is irrelevant here.
If Mail receives any messages, it has to be because (1) it’s running AND (2) it’s configured to automatically check for new mail AND (3) the accounts are configured to be included when automatically checking for new mail. It looks like you’re making it really hard for Mail to not download any messages...
And except in the case of a Gmail account (which allows messages to be downloaded only once by POP mail clients), receiving a message in Mail should have no bearing on you being able to receive that message in any other mail client as well if Mail is configured with the default account settings...
    More info, please.

  • I can't find the mailto application in the tools menu. I want to make Gmail my default mail program

I'm trying to set Gmail as my default mail program in Firefox. When I go to Applications, there is no "mailto" application and I'm unable to select Gmail for emails.
    Thanks

Try to rename (or delete) the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all file actions.
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions#Resetting_download_actions
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
You can check the network.protocol-handler.external.mailto prefs on the about:config page.
If network.protocol-handler.external.mailto prefs are user set (bold) then right-click and Reset them to the default value.

Hi, how are you seeing these eMails if the account is removed?

  • Lion, Mail, and Outlook. I can't get preferences in Mail to accept Outlook as the default mail program. Outlook works fine within the Office world but not with Preview or Lightroom (to choose two that I've tried today). Any ideas?

As per the heading, I can't get Lion to accept Outlook 2011 as the default mail program. When I go through the Preferences in Mail to set the detault mail program, I can see Outlook, I can select it, but it doesn't "stick." As soon as I reopen Mail, Mail is the defailt mail program again. It also doesn't work though the Outloook Preferences menu. I'm a recent transfer to Macs, and could use some help. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

There is a forum specifically for MS Office for Macs, just click Office for Mac Product Forums and post there, they should know.
If for some reason you don't want to do that you have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support, this might be a good time to use it. You can find the number in your owners manual.

  • How do I configure Entourage to be default mail program?

After problems with the Mac Mail program, I have switched everything over to Entourage. I can't, however, figure out how to make it my default mail program. I'd like Entourage to open when I try and send an email from an internet site, but can't figure out how to switch from Mail opening to Entourage.
I have set it as the default mail program in iPhoto already.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Setting entourage as default mail program

I have entourage and word. When I click send to email recipient I want entourage to pop up. Instead Mail pops up.
I went into the preferences--> general tab and changet the default email reader to entourage. That did not solve the problem. Any other suggestions?

Do you mean that you went to the Preferences in Mail, and then set the default mail reader to Entourage? Was Entourage running, or not? Quit Entourage, if not already, open Mail again, and repeat the preference change -- had the selected held in the Mail Preferences?
What type of account do you have -- POP, IMAP or .mac?
    More info, please.

  • Mail in iOS 7 changes default mail account after entering addresses?

I just noticed that the Mail app in iOS 7 changes the sent from email address from my default to another account I have after entering in the send to address. When I first create the new email the correct default email address is showing (iCloud) but after I add any send to address it changes to another account (Hotmail) as the sent from account.
I checked my settings and iCloud is still set as the default account, I can click and change it before sending the email but I think this may be a bug unless there is something I missed.
    Anyone else have this problem?

Oh, and just to add, whilst under Settings > Mail it does indeed state 'default mail account to use when an application outside of mail attempts to send mail'.  However also when you are in the Mail app and on the main screen where you can see all your mailboxes, the Mail App also needs a 'default' account, and in my experience/opinion this is pulled from the Default account within Settings > Mail rather than which ever mailbox is top of the list within the Mail app (didnt work for me!)
But regardless, I have sent an email from an app outside of Mail and the issue is encountered:-  I have my virgin.net as my default email (via Settings > Mail).  I go into the Photo app, and select a photo to email.  My virgin.net email is showing in the From box - so far so good.  I select an email address for the To box.  My From email address switches to my iCloud.com address.  So this is the bug.  It should not be doing this.  This is the same issue it seems encountered by the original member of this thread.  Anyone know how you alert Apple to bugs in their software?

  • How Can I Change Default Mail Account in Mail Application?

I have 2 Gmail accounts. Gmail1 and Gmail2. When I changed the password of my Gmail1 account - which used to be my default mail account - it changed in the Mail application so that now Gmail2 is my default mail account.
I know that usually you can go
Preferences -> Accounts -> And on the list on the left you can just drag the mail account you want to be the default account to the top of the list. But it doesn't work. It's just not possible to move them around on the list, they are all stuck.
Can anyone help me understand why I can't reorder my mail accounts, or if there is another way to which I can change my default mail account?
    Thanks.

    Hey wilhel10002,
Thanks for the question. My answer to your question relies on what you determine to be the default account. If it is simply which account is at the top of the list, yes you can re-order the accounts in the sidebar as needed (not from Mail > Preferences > Accounts).
However, I personally perceive the default account as the account that I send new messages from. This behavior can be adjusted in Mail > Preferences > Composing > Send new messages from
    Mail (Mountain Lion): Composing preferences

    Thanks,

  • Clicking on an e-mail address will NOT open Windows Live Mail which is already the default mail program which is already set as the default mail program

Clicking on an e-mail address will NOT open Windows Live Mail. Windows Live mail is already set as my default e-mail program.

Sorry you're having this problem. I think it was previously reported only by Windows XP users.
When you reinstall, were you making Firefox your default browser? Some users have reported that ''not'' making Firefox the default browser was an effective workaround.
However, you may have success with this approach, suggested by a user in another thread, which appears to more thoroughly update the Windows registry:
    # Open Adobe Reader / Acrobat
    # Edit->Preferences
    # In the Categories column click 'General'
    # Near the bottom of the page click the button marked 'Select Default PDF Handler'
    # In the dialog, select 'Adobe Reader XI' (or Adobe Acrobat, as the case may be) and click 'Apply'
    # A Windows Configuration screen will appear. Allow it to do its stuff (takes a few minutes), then restart your computer when prompted.
Does that resolve the issue for you?
