Change Default 'Open With'

Folks,
I changed something, but don't know what. I want ACR to open for RAW or JPEGs. I believe my prefs are set correctly in both ACR and Bridge. DblClk in Bridge should open ACR; it opens photoshop.  I've gone to Finder and a file Get Info > Open all files with Adobe Bridge. This isn't working. How can I change the Right Clik >Photoshop CS4 (Default) to either ACR or Bridge?
Frustrated,
Regards to all,
Charles

How do you use JPEGs? Seems to me the easiest way to make minor JPEG
adjustmentisACR! Dclk > Adjust >Done.
I don't make adjustments to jpegs
Only work in Raw and save as PSD files. Those files can be resized and saved
as jpeg to customers needs. Once you have saved a jpeg you should not make
changes to them because that will cause loss of quality, you don't have that
whit PSD or Tiff files.
When you have good reasons to shoot in jpeg you should do so but the changes
that you can make with them in ACR are very limited compared to use of Raw
files.
My importing from camera  continues to be a mixed bag. I shoot raw 90% and
make JPGs via ACR (after importing) as I need them. It''s the copying to
folder, subfolder, other drive, convert to DNG, Add meta data, Keyword...ALL
on Import seems overwhelming; and it is. I just import to a folder and decide
then, almost one by one.
I use Adobe Photodownloader for that, in Bridge choose Get files from camera
and explore the advanced setting, you can do a lot in one click.
Thanks for the input on 'Open With'. I've been having some problems with
Expression Media 2 and I've been trying different methods to get that right.
One of the things I tried was to Repair Permissions in Disk Utility. I think,
but I'm not certain, that that may have corrected the Open With situation.
It is always good to use system maintenance every now and then
Here's a question about Replying to this forum. How do you include the partial
reply? Do you 'Copy & Paste' a selected text? For example, How did you add
"Still can not change the 'Open With' etc., etc." comment in your reply?
On the forum site you can do so when you use the reply button and then use
the tool bar above to quote.  But I use my email application (Office for Mac
2008) and simply select the text I want to quote and then choose reply.

  • Need to find a scripts for changing default "Open with" iTunes app to Quick

    Hello all...
I'm new to scripting but need a script really quickly...
I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find a script that will change the default "Open with" of audio files placed within a certain folder on my desktop...
I'm making sound clips with WireTap and dumping them in a folder called WireTapExports as .mp3. I then need to play them without using iTunes (and importing them by default) but going into the "Get Info" and manualy changing the "Open With" settings for each file is taking ages...and it's very irratating...
Is there a way I can make all audio file put in that folder automaticaly open with Quicktime instead.
I know this is quite easy to most but I've only just started looking at Applescript (i.e. a few days ago) and but I need this to work now...
    Many thanks in advance...

Not what you want, but if you hold the control key while getting info it changes to summary info which then lets you change the preferred application on a batch of files in one go.

  • Changing default open with for file type for all users

    hello
can I change the default app to open a specific file type for all users and not juist for my user?

What applications are offered for open with depends on the application itself informing the system it can open certain files, plus your own custom selections for opening files. Evidently the alternate app you want to use does not claim to be able to open the files you are assigning it. If you have a plist editor and know how to use it you could edit the info.plist file inside the application itself to add the file type you want to the application's declaration of file types it will open. Then restart so the system will read that declaration. I think it would be far easier to simply launch the application and then drop a file you want it to open onto its icon in the Dock.

  • How to Change Default 'Open with' Program

Right now my default pdf viewer is epdfview. When I click on a downloaded file in the 'Downloads' it opens using epdfview. How can I make AcrobatReader default for this action?
What I am NOT writing about: I don't want to change the Action what happens, when I click on a pdf file, because this Action is 'preview in Firefox' right now. I would like to change the associated DEAFULT program, which opens a DOWNLOADED file.
I know how to choose 'Other...' programs in the 'Open with...' dialogue, I want to see AcrobatReader as a DEAFULT in the 'Open with...' dialogue.

  • How to set a default open with, for all files

I would simply like to make all my .avi files to open with VLC, rather than Quicktime. I have done the "change default open with", but it's only for that file.
Any way to make all avi's open with VLC?
    Thanks!

Right-click any .AVI file and select Get Info. Under the "Open with" section, select the app you want, and then press the "Change All" button.

  • Problems changing the Open with... setting

    Hi,
Having recived my new MacBook Pro with the trial version of Office 2004 I removed this using the remove utility as I have the full version of Office X.
However, I get the error code -10660 when I try and open documents. I have tracked this down to the fact that the default Open with... setting is Word 2004 etc.
I can manually select the correct program to open these files with, but when I set it so that all files with .doc open with this older version of Word it defaults back to the new version. (I am using the Change All... option under the Get Info option).
If I manually do this using Open with.. for each file it works, but this is both time consuming and silly.

Missed the post above. Running this at the terminal did fix the problem:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/\

The question was, why should I have had to have done this!!

  • Group Policy For 2008 Terminal Server Users Default Open With Not Working

I'm trying to change the default open with behavior for jpg files on my terminal server. I created a Group Policy that changed it to MS Paint to Office 2010 Picture Manager. The policy appears to apply correctly but jpg files still open in
Paint. When a user is logged on, if they look at the properties of a jpg, it shows Photo Gallery as the program to open it but when opened, it opens in Paint.
Has anyone seen this behavior before?

Since yesterday all my usual .xls files will not open (Office for Mac 2011). CAN open .xlxs files. Default 'open with' is Microsoft Excel.app. No software updates done yesterday or the day before (or maybe a Silverlight or an Acrobat one by accident?). Have repaired disc permissions. HHD name is still same as it always was. What next? Thanks
PS I'm not a great techie so assume I don't know what you're talking about!

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

  • Default Open With won't change

I am using ThinkFree Office as an alternative to Microsoft. It works off the same file formats as MS Office and therefore adds the xls extension to its spreadsheets, etc. etc.
I tried changing the default application using file->get info-> open with -> change all. It then asks me if I really want to change thinkfree files to use thinkfree (doesn't make sense). I select yes (actually it says continue, I think), and then it changes it right back to MS Excel as the default.
Bottom line: I can change individual files to use thinkfree, but I can't change the default.
My iMac came with an MS Office test drive, which I have removed, deleted, trashed, etc. etc.
Has Big Brother Bill put something on my machine I can't change? How do I get rid of this so my xls files will always open thinkfree (same with .doc and .ppt)?

Did you follow these instructions to remove MS Office test drive:
On your hard disk, open Microsoft Office 2004 folder that contains the Test Drive. Any documents you saved in the Microsoft Office 2004 Test Drive should be moved somewhere in your documents folder.
In the Microsoft Office 2004 folder, double-click "Remove Office". In the Results window, choose Microsoft Office 2004 (including Test Drive) and then click "continue" and follow the prompts.

    You might also try this:
Navigate to /library/caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-xxxxx.csstore. You may have more than one with different negative numbers. Delete all of these.
Then navigate to ~(yourhome)/library/preferences/com.apple.launchservices.plist and delete this also.
    Then restart. Let us know.

  • How to open documents by default with Pages 4 ( "Change All", "Open With" info option)?

    Hello I installed Pages 5, which I don't like.
So I would like to open all my documents by default with Pages 4. However, I can't get the system to fix this default. In the "Info" panel of the Finder, under "Open With", I can set Pages 4 as a default app for one single document, but when I ask to "Change All" documents and use Pages 4, the system refuses to use the setting I select, and keeps reverting to Pages 5. Any suggestion, short of uninstalling Pages 5? Although I don't like it, I need to use it sporadically, so I don't want to uninstall it.
    Thanks.
    l.

As far as I know, there is not any built-in way to do this. Perhaps an add-on can modify how the "star" works or add a new button for this function?
Until then, you'll have to continue changing the pop-up list:
    * when bookmarking a page, double-click the star, and change "Unsorted Bookmarks" to "Bookmarks Toolbar" and then click Done
    * when bookmarking a page, press Ctrl+d or right-click the page > click the star on the context menu, and change "Bookmarks Menu" to "Bookmarks Toolbar" and then click Done
Some users like to drag the padlock or globe from the left end of the address bar to the Bookmarks Toolbar, but if you always want the new bookmark added at the end, then this is not efficient.

  • How do I change the default "open with" application for certain files??  I've tried EVERYTHING!!

    Hi guys!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE someone help me!!!  I have been trying for ages to change this!!  It is SO frustrating!!  I recently bought a new MacBook Pro 13" after my old one (2009) got stolen.  Went from Snow Leopard to 10.8.2, restored all my apps and files etc (thanks goodness I backed up).
NOW I have a problem!  All my .xls and .doc files open up with Pages and Numbers, and not OpenOffice.  NO MATTER WHAT I DO!!!
The basic "change open with" "always use this application" story doesn't work.  It always reverts back to Pages or Numbers.  I also tried a Terminal Command I found on this forum from way back in 2010.  But that doesn't work either.  I also tried a .pst deletion but I don't have a .com.apple.launches.pst file!
PLEASE GUYS.  PLEASE!  SOMEONE HELP ME HERE!!!!!!!!!!  It's driving me nuts!!!!!  LIKE NUTS!!!!!!!

Here is what I would do:
Update OpenOffice to the latest Mac OS X version for improved compatibiity with Mountain Lion.
Boot into Safe Mode to clear caches, verify/repair permissions, and rebuild font database, etc.
Reboot, holding down the shift key until you see a progress bar on the grey boot screen.
At the login prompt, and before you click the right arrow button to login, press and hold shift again.
    Reboot normally.
Now follow sig's advice, and specify OpenOffice as the can opener for Word and Excel files.
If OpenOffice installs into a /Applications folder as individual writer, and sheet applications, then use these names respectively for Word and Excel files.
LibreOffice (what I use) only offers the LibreOffice application choice.

  • How do I go back to default  Open With application in /Library/Mail/cache

Help! I was trying to find a mailbox that got deleted. In looking at /Library/Cache/Mail/ to see if the mailbox was there, I tried to open a cache. There was no application to open the document, so I clicked Mail Document, or something--I don't even know what I clicked. The cache did not open, but all the caches in the group now say Mail Document, and Open With: Mail. I am afraid I screwed up some important files in my computer. How do I get the files back to their original settings?

There seems to be no way to make it say <none> again, if you set it to something. First, it may be fine with it set to something, since you would normally never double-click on those files. But you may be able to change it back to the "default" setting by using a System Preferences extension called RCDefaultApp.
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22977&mode=info
This installs as a new pane in System Preferences. It has an Extensions tab. If cache shows up as one of the extensions, try setting it to <default> or, if that doesn't work, <disable>.

  • Keynote Saves .key files to default open with Powerpoint

I've been finding that whenever I create a new keynote file and save it somewhere, if I double click on the file it will automatically attempt to open it with powerpoint. After powerpoint opens it will obviously say it does not recognize the file. I can correctly open the file with keynote by right-clicking and manually opening with keynote.
If I open 'get info' on the file I will see that it is selected to open with powerpoint. I can open the drop down menu to change the opening option and see that powerpoint is selected but keynote is listed right below with '(default)' beside it. If I select keynote (default) and close the drop down menu it will stay as keynote and the file will correctly open with keynote all subsequent times.
However, if I click the 'change all' button below to set all files of this type to the selected option (keynote - default) then my selection automatically changes back to powerpoint in the drop down menu. It is really weird and confusing.
    Any help?

I've posted this many times & others have posted their methods more than once as well.
This is what works for me. After I installed the new iWork updates I created a folder on an external drive & named it "other applications." I then moved the new iWork apps to this folder & renamed the applications Keynote 6, Pages 5 & Numbers 3. I have icons for two versions of Pages & Numbers (I rarely use Keynote) in my Dock. Even with two versions of Pages & Numbers running, double-clicking an existing file opens in Pages 4.3 or Numbers 2.3. This should also keep the Mac App Store from nagging you to update.

  • Temporarily changing the "open with" app for a batch of files

I've written a number of scripts which have been saved as application bundles. One of the resource folders (named "Image Files") contains all the image files used in the script -- but the image files may have a variety of default applications for opening.
I'm working on a separate script to facilitate editing the application bundles if and as necessary, and editing the image files is part of that. I need the option of opening the image files with an application other than the file's default application -- for example, I might want to open the image files with Photoshop.
In my editing script I can easily enough get a list of the image files. But to open them with, say, Photoshop, I find that I have to use a Photoshop tell block and the full path to each file as it is called (otherwise it opens with its default application). If there are hundreds of image files, that's a lot of work!
I'm seeking a "global" command that will tell all files in folder "Image Files" to open with app "Photoshop" (just in this script, as I don't want to change the defaults).
    Possible?

I probably didn't explain my requirements thoroughly
    Your suggestion:
    "You mean like:
    tell application "Finder"
open every file of folder "Macintosh HD:path:to:Image Files" using "Macintosh HD:Applications:PhotoShop.app"
    end tell"
    isn't quite it.
(For one thing, that has the somewhat alarming result of opening all the image files in the folder simultaneously, and there may be hundreds.)
In plain English, what I had in mind was more like:
"Set the 'open with' application of every file in folder 'Macintosh HD:path:to:Image Files' to Adobe Photoshop.app"
such that, if I were to have those files in a list, and were to open them one at a time, they'd open with Photoshop without further instruction -- this without affecting the default applications (or 'open with' applications) of the files from which those files were duplicated (assuming that there are such 'original' files).
Since this still may be unclear, here's another explanation:
    • Say I have ten .jpg files on the desktop, all set to 'open with' Preview.
    • I duplicate those ten files to the Image Files folder of the application bundle.
    • If I open any one of those files at the desktop, I want it to open in Preview.
    • But if I open any one of those files in the Image Files folder, I want it to open in Photoshop. (The
files in the Image Files folder could each have its 'open with' application reset manually, but
with hundreds of files I'd much prefer AS to do that. As far as I can tell, doing that -- manually
or with AS -- would result in different 'open with' settings for a file on the desktop and the
corresponding file in the Image Files folder, which is basically what I'm after.
Can I get AS to do this?
