Change default PDF handler

I downloaded  a trial of Adobe Acrobat...didn't buy it.  Have Adobe Reader, but the default is now Adobe Acrobat.  How do I change it so I can download to/with Adobe Reader?

In either app, choose Edit > Preferences > General > Select default PDF handler.

  • "Select default PDF handler" greyed out in Acrobat XI and Reader X

MIS just installed Acrobat XI for me, and now all PDFs from the web open in the Browser, which is not the way I usually operate.  I went to Preferences > General in both programs, and in both the "Select default PDF handler" option is greyed out.  Any suggestions?

Go to Edit-> prefrences-> Internet and Change the settings to open PDF In browser.

  • Many of our users can't open PDFs.  We have to select Reader as the Default PDF Handler once a day.

What was once an infrequent problem, has become a chronic issue since some changes were made to Group Policy by an AD admin.  We've disabled all the GPs that pertain to Acrobat, but we're still having to log into users' workstations to remind Acrobat Reader that it is the Default PDF Handler (as found under Edit>Preferences>General.)
As I mentioned above, this used to happen occassionally, and I'm not really sure why.  We use versions 9.5, X and XI, and all of them have exhibited this problem in the past and currently.  If we could find a network-wide solution to this issue (rather than having to log into scores of individual workstations every day), we would be really happy.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

We think we've found the answer.  Apparently, an admin from six years ago had created an ironically named batch file called "Adobe Fix.bat" which called a login script to put the following registry key on every computer:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat\Exe]
    @="\"C:\\Program Files\\Adobe\\Reader 8.0\\Reader\\AcroRd32.exe\""
Since C:\\Program Files\\Adobe\\Reader 8.0\\Reader\\AcroRd32.exe doesn't exist on any computer anymore, no PDFs would load until you told Acrobat what software to use to open them.
Removing this script should fix the problem.

  • After installing Reader XI, why can't Acrobat be set as default PDF handler?

I've tried everything I know, including a clean boot.  Every time I try to set Win7 to open PDFs with Acrobat (Version 8.3.1), it sets it back to Reader XI.
From inside Reader/Preferences/General/Select Default PDF Handler, Reader XI is the only option.  Acrobat isn't listed.

Unfortunately there is no option post installation with Acrobat 8 to change PDF ownership. However this is possbile Acrobat 10 onwards. But yYou can choose to make Reader XI the default PDF handler during installation itself.
    1. Go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs, select the entry "Adobe Reader XI" and Un-install.
    2. Then visit link : http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/ and choose the Reader which you need.
    3. When you double click the EXE, then a screen will come showing extraction of files. As soon as extraction ends, installation will begin and you will be presented with following screen :
    4. Uncheck the checkbox which says "Make Adobe Reader my default PDF viewer"
Acrobat 8 will remain default PDF viewer on your machine.

Click the pop up menu next to: Open with
Select Safari or your default PDF reader.

  • Changing default PDF viewer

I need to change the default PDF viewer on a large number of computers
from Acrobat Professional to Reader. When I say "change the default," I
don't just mean the file association; I mean every default, including
    browser plug-ins.
When you install Acrobat or Reader on a computer on which the other has
already been installed, you get a prompt as to whether you want Acrobat
or Reader to be the default PDF viewer. I want to get at that
functionality, preferably by script. So far as I have been able to
discover, the ONLY way to get at that function is by uninstalling one of
    the programs and reinstalling it.
Is there a deployable way to do this? I prefer scripting methods, but
manual remote changes are good too.

I have no choice. This is what I've got to work with. And our Acrobat
software is controlled by a KeyServer, which is why I need Reader to be
the default (so as not to use up licenses for mere viewing of PDFs).
In any case, the two programs do know how to set a default between
themselves when you install the second one, so that functionality must
    exist somewhere, supported or not.

  • Change default pdf file name

    Hi,all
How can I change a default pdf file name from unknown.pdf to something else?
    Regards,

    HI Michael,
    Yes you can do that,
    Just do something like
         IWDAttributeInfo attInfo = wdContext.currentContextElement().node().getNodeInfo().getAttribute("PdfSource");
         ISimpleTypeModifiable type = attInfo.getModifiableSimpleType();
         IWDModifiableBinaryType binaryType = (IWDModifiableBinaryType) type;
         binaryType.setFileName("TravelRequest.pdf");  // Set file name
binaryType.setMimeType(WDWebResourceType.PDF);  // set the mime type
for example in the doInit() before providing the file for download

  • IPhone 3G S - Change Default PDF Viewer?

Have an iPhone 3GS. Bought Goodreader because I need a PDF viewer that has reflow ability. I also use dropbox to easily link to my important files. However, whenever I open a PDF file, it launches the default iPhone PDF viewer, which does not have reflow. There are ways to get my files into goodreader, but they are cumbersome. In any event, I really just want my default PDF viewer to be goodreader so every time I open any PDF file whether it be from an email, dropbox or whatever, it used goodreader. Is this possible? Thanks.

Thanks. I tried the g thing and that is a nice time saver. I know about dropboxes' web app to grab files. In fact, I'll use that with your g thing tip. Just trying to save the steps it takes to get it into goodreader from the dropbox web app. Being able to directly load from the dropbox iphone app would be better, but your g thing is quite a bit better than the next best alternative that currently exists. I still wish there was a way to make goodreader the default pdf viewer.. Thanks.

  • Changing default PDF setting

Is their a way to modify the default PDF setting used in Save as PDF or force AI to use another one for each new doc? Actually, every new document open or created will use the [Illustrator Default] setting. I want a custom one to be the default. Is this possible? How?

    Hi guys,
Does anyone know how to default my Acrobat Reader or Pro to open up certain software?
Example: I have a vector catalog with images that opens up in PDF format but when I click
on the image it's suppose to open up in Illustrator. Instead it opens up in PREVIEW.
    Can anyone help please??

  • Change default PDF viewer in Firefox

    Hi,
I use Firefox a lot for viewing the web and when I click on a PDF file I get the option of either saving it to my computer or opening it in Preview. However, I'd like to be able to open the PDF directly in Adobe Acrobat. Is there a way I can set what application should be used to open my PDF files from Firefox? And if so, how do I do it? Thanks so much.

    Georege Orville,
These look like the instructions to change the default viewer in the Finder. I don't have a problem doing this, my only problem is that when I click on a PDf file in Firefox it always opens with Preview instead of Adobe. When I right click on a PDF link in Firefox I'm allowed to open the link in a new tab and then a pop up box comes up allowing me to either "open with <application>" or "Save to Disk". But the only application I'm allowed to use is Preview, which is what I want to change. Is there a way to do this? Thanks so much.

    Hello
In my company we are required to work with a different PDF reader/editor, in order to integrate a certain digital signature.
We also work with a CRM that uses Internet Explorer's Adobe Reader plugin to display PDF files, such as invoices, letter, etc.
The required PDF reader is set to be the default reader in Windows 8.1. When a user uses the CRM, and the program calss the IE Adobe Add-In, the default reader is changed for the entire system.
    Help needed, thank you.
    Thomas

    Hi GLT,
in Firefox open Preferences and select "Helper
applications". There you should be able to define
    Acrobat as default application.
Thanks. Unfortunately, there are options for .MP3, .PNG, et al, but not for .PDF. Nor can that be added as there is no field to do so.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

  • Changing default pdf reader

how do you change the deafult pdf reader from acrobat back to preview?

Easy!  Highlight the pdf file/File/Get Info.
In the Get Info window, scroll down to "Open with:"
Select Preview to open the pdf file.
Click the "Change All..." button if you want to "Use this application to open all documents like this.”

  • Changing default pdf export

A huge part of my job is saving pdfs out of Illustrator, my question... is it possible to get the save as / pdf window to come up
with my preset (ApogeeX) instead of the (Illustrator Default) and then having to drag to mine each time?

Yes you can record an action. My action in addition first prints, then saves the .ai file, and then saves the .pdf to the desktop and closes. Recording the action remembers the pdf setting you chose. I have been using this action since alteast AI8 adn has saved me countless hours, and really nice because saves you .ai file, so you do not forget before making a .pdf.
I inserted the action flyout to insert a stop, to slow the action down. Basically this goes so fast can cause Illustrator to crash, and got tired of adjusting playback actions speed each time you restart illustrator. This also work by saving to the desktop, and you manually drag the .pdf to the final folder destination.

  • Acrobat Ignore "Set as default PDF Viewer" Setting

    Hello,
I see from previous posts that this has been an issue for a while. I have an image that contains Adobe Reader. That image is deployed to all users. Some users get Acrobat Pro. also. So I went thru the whole customization tool and selelcted "Make Acrobat the default PDF viewer" and am using the Setup.ini and .MST file. Everything else works - skips EULA, reads serial number - everything but making Acrobat Pro the default PDF reader. After I install it and launch it for the first time I am presented with the "make Acrobat reader your default PDF viewer" question. How can I set this once and for all and not prompt every single user?

Unfortunately there is no option post installation with Acrobat 8 to change PDF ownership. However this is possbile Acrobat 10 onwards. But yYou can choose to make Reader XI the default PDF handler during installation itself.
    1. Go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs, select the entry "Adobe Reader XI" and Un-install.

    3. When you double click the EXE, then a screen will come showing extraction of files. As soon as extraction ends, installation will begin and you will be presented with following screen :
