Change file kind description

In the Finder "cfg" files are listed as "LightWave Config Files" (even after uninstalling LightWave 3D). When I open the info panel (cmd-I) the kind description is set to "Document".
Is there a way to change the kind description in the Finder? There is no program associated with this file format, but on another Mac the kind of cfg-files is "Document", both in Finder and the info panel and not "LightWave Config File".

I have just installed Snow Leopard. It seems it solved my "problem" with cfg-files which were recognized as LightWave Config Files. Anyway I still wonder if it is possible to change the file-kind-description manually.
According to this article
http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2009/08/mac-os-x-10-6.ars/3
under Snow Leopard Mac file-type/creator codes are kept in an "extended attribute" in the resource fork. I'm not sure what the best tool is for modifying those.

  • How to change File Kind (not "how to assign an application to open a file?)

I build the toc.ncx file (part of the ePub setup) automatically, based on user input and source file content. It's fine, except that the file Kind (as shown in Finder Preview, for example) is Plain Text.
The Kind should be Unix Executable File (the actual description is "zmedia-type="application/x-dtbncx+xml") in order for the file to function correctly with the rest of the ePub generation.
I could set the file Kind in the program (I think!), except that I do not know what the code for such a Kind is.
    Can you help?

To make the file a Unix executable can be done as follows:
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder and enter the following:
    sudo chmod 755 /pathto/filename
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password at the prompt; it will not be echoed. Alternatively put a space after "755" then drag the file's icon into the Terminal window.
If you want the Unix icon simply set the file's default application to Terminal by selecting the file then Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. Change the default application in the Open With section. If you want all .ncx files the same way then click on the Change All button.

  • Change file kind?

Is there any way to change a file's "kind?" I've got some .package files which should be unix executable files, but they have the wrong kind. They are either listed as text documents or terminal documents. Any way to change this? I've tried everything I can think of. Any help is appreciated.

Nevermind. I got the files working.

  • Changing the file kind's description

On my MacBook Pro running Leopard, I have several PHP files whose kind in Finder is displayed as "HTML Document". When I display the "Get Info" pop-up for a PHP file, the Kind field under General is not editable.
I would like to change the file's kind description from "HTML Document" to "PHP Source File". I have done a lot of digging and searching via Google to find a solution to this and I have not found anything that describes how to do this.
Is there a way under OS X to change the file kind description?

    Hello jk:
I do not use those files, but I suggest you do a Google search on "PHP." There is a lot of information there.

  • Is it possible to change the file Kind, e.g. mkv to video and not document?

Is it possible to change the file Kind, e.g. mkv to video and not document?
I can't find where I can change this in Finder or OSX.  Is this really hardoded in the OS?  Get Info gives me no options, but that is where I set the default apps for file kinds (types).
I hope this is possible because I have lot of document kinds and the arrange by kind view in Finder is thus not very useful.
    Thanks in advance.

It has to be hard-coded in the application that claims MKV files as a type.

  • TextEdit files' Kind is "Unix Executable"--how do I change this?

For some mysterious reason, a whole bunch of my TextEdit files now show up as Unix Executable files! I'd like to change the Kind of these files, so they once again are identified as Rich Text Format (RTF) or SimpleText documents.
I was able to change their extension, so at least they now open up in TextEdit when I double-click them, but I'd like them to show up as well when I search for Kind, or list files by Kind.
Any suggestions of how to change this would be welcome!

OK, I figured out a quick and dirty method. Open each file in TextEdit and save it. It changes the kind back to TextEdit.
First, open several files at once in TextEdit (do that by dragging the files to the TextEdit icon--if you double-click they'll open up the Terminal which you don't want.) Then, it's a simple matter of keeping your finger on the Apple (command) key, while you alternate between pressing S (for command-s for save) and W (for command-w for close). You can sit there mindlessly going through the rhythm, back and forth, and process dozens very quickly!
In case anyone else runs into this problem, here's a way of finding all the Unix Executable files. Go to your Documents folder. Do a Find (command-F), pick Documents folder, select Search by Kind, select Other, and type in Unix Executable. Voila! A list of those files. Save the search so that you can repeat this as needed. (I also discovered that you can search for contents and type in Unix Executable and find them.)
WARNING: BE CAREFUL! Some of the files may not be textedit files! Or you'd rather have them open up in another program such as Word. So, you'd have to do the open, save, close shuffle via that other program.
Alright! I just discovered some more in another folder (I hadn't started with Documents). So I'm off to fix those, too!
Still, there must be a good batch processor somewhere (freebie hopefully) that would convert the Kind quickly. (And here I don't mean the type and creator as some of these files showed TXT and .txt but still had their Kind as Unix Executable.)

  • Change File Type/Kind of File

I have a file on my MAC that I use in Windows, which I run on my MAC using Parallels.
    File 1
Under Get Info, it shows the file Kind as a Unix Executible File (since there is nothing associated with it on the MAC) - in Windows it correctly shows the file as a QuickBooks file.
    File 2
I fooled around with the extension and made it XLS. Now under Get Info, it shows the file Kind as a Microsoft Excel Workbook - in Windows, I can change the extension, but it shows the file type as a Excel file.
I'm trying to change the file Kind from Excel to Unix Executable File, or other. I think if I can say what it opens with, it might work. The problem is that the file doesn't open with any MAC program, so I can't do that (note with file #1, the open with field says <none>, which is okay).
Can anyone offer any help. The file works fine, I just don't want my Quickbooks file to say that it is an Excel file. This is not an extension issue, it is a hidden coding issue that I can't figure out.

I was able to change the extension in Windows, which then changed the file type. I'm still curious as to how to make the change directly on my MAC.

  • ITunes cannot change video kind for multiple files

i put many video files to library, and then i want to change each video kind into music video, but unfortunately i can't find an easy to change those files at once.
i have to change them one by one.
my question is: is it possible to change "video kind" of many files at itunes library at once? how?
    thx

No, it's not possible to batch-edit the fields on the Video tab. This seems like an outright oversight and will probably be corrected in a future version soon. What's worse, after you take the time to change the Video settings on your files one at a time, iTunes won't bother saving all the changes in the file itself. The Video Kind setting will change to the default "Movie" when the file is removed and added back to the library. For instance, all the "TV Show" files you back up to disk become "Movie" when added back to the library later. You have to edit the Video tab one by one again! It's maddening.

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • File Info Description Copyright Notice text problem

I want to change the Copyright Notice text in File>File Info>Description in a way that is permanent.  Back in 2009  I set the text to say "Copyright 2009" and now I want it to say Copyright 2011.  Changing the text works for the current image but the next image I open, it reverts to 2009.  How do I fix this?

that there are DEFAULT values for both Photographer and Copyright Notice that are loaded (from SOMEWHERE) every time I launch Photoshop.
Sounds like you may already have a Script to add the © notice.
Yes, I did misunderstand the need.
Good luck, and I see that you are suffering from a "split-personality." Post with both I.D.s to the Forum Comments forum, and Adobe-Admin will help you straighten things out. Note: Adobe is on Summer holiday, until July 10, so John might not be working, until then.

  • Changing Media Kind To Podcast

    Hi,
I have downloaded some free podcasts from Soundcloud but they are not going into my podcast tab in iTunes. I have clicked
'Get Info" and changed media kind to Podcast but it just disappears from my library and seems to go missing. It still plays from "Recently Added" Playlist but doesn't show in Podcasts tab or Music Tab. Can anyone explain why?
    Thanks
    Matt

I'm also unable to change a couple of files' media kind from 'Music' to 'Podcast', no matter how much info I include.  I can change the media kind to 'Audiobook' and they appear in the "Books" section, but if I change it to 'Podcast' and click OK they remain in "Music", and when I check the info the media kind has reset to 'Music'.  Very frustrating.
Ironically, they were podcast episodes I had to purchase through iTunes as I accidentally deleted the original downloads.  They downloaded as music not podcasts (since they were purchased, not "subscribed" to) and when I tried to change their media kind to 'Podcast' I had the above problem, but after the first try it simply greyed-out the media kind drop-down.  I then re-encoded them as MP3s thinking that the protected MPEG-4 files wouldn't allow a change in media kind, but after the re-encode I've had the above problem.  I just want to put them with the rest of the podcasts in the series/season.

  • Changes  Web Template Description

    Hi all,
Is there away to changes Web Template Description ?
    Thanks in advance
    supriatna

    Hi,
When you launch WAD, you should have three windows viz., properties, web items, and template. If you don't see the properties window, you can try to turn this on from the menu "view" --> turn the flag for properties by selecting it. Then you should have the properties window.
If you still can't find properties window, what you can do is, from the menu tools --> settings --> directories tab --> get the path for web template files and remove the file SAPBWWebAppDes.wsp from that folder in your pc (it's a temp folder). This file gets generated every time you launch WAD. If for some reason you can't see properties window, by deleting this file, you should be able to generate a new file to see the properties window. From here, you can change the description of your web template.
    Hope it helps,
    Sree
