Change file type icon

Hi, I am running latest version of Yosemite and am trying to change the icon artwork for my ZIP files. Seeing very strange behavior.
My zip files show no artwork in directory view :
I previously had iZip installed but deleted it instead to start using Keka. Here is whar "Get Info" shows even though I've uninstalled iZip (moved the app to the trash can): The artwork at upper left below is for iZip. I've set Keka to be the default compression app, so I'd expect the Keka artwork to be here (not iZip).
My question:  How do I change the icon artwork to reflect Keka and not iZip (which ostensibly is no longer on my system)?
Thanks,
Kevin

It appears that you have not removed/deleted iZip's associated files just the main app.
Option key>Finder>Go>Library>Preferences.  Trash all the izip.plist files that you find.
Option key>Finder>Go>Library>Application Support.  Trash all the izip folders and/or files that you find.
Repair permissions & restart your computer.
Consider using this free utility called StuffIt Expander Mac.  You can also find this utility at the App Store.  This utility will not interfere w/Get Info.

  • Missing or wrong file type icons

Got my new Retina iMac this week (running OS X 10.10 of course) and went through and downloaded/installed all my lovely programs but now some of the file type icons are showing up as awful exec type file icons (see below).
All the .indd files were created in the same version Adobe InDesign CC 2014 and InDesign is set as the default program for all these file types, but as you will be able to see, some have that awful black icon. Blergh!
    Any suggestions?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • PDF File Type Icon Not Displaying HELP!!!

    Hey guys!
I have a quick question that I need resolved. Make sure you READ before you respond as people seem to be having trouble with this one.
Something happened on my system to where .pdf files aren't displaying the PDF file type image anymore. They're just displaying the Windows default non-associated file icon.
But the weird thing is that the .pdf file type IS associated with Adobe Acrobat, and when double clicked they DO open in Acrobat.
I checked inside of Acorbat.dll and the file type icon IS in there...so this is leading me to believe that something is messed up in the registry to where Windows doesn't know to link a .pdf with the icon inside of Acrobat.dll.
So my question is this...how do I RELINK the .pdf file type with the PDF file type icon located inside of Acrobat.dll???

Before you start editing the registry try the suggestions given in the FAQ:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bbc2da9
failing that try doing a repair of acrobat from the help menu.
If still no joy let us know.

  • Where is "save as" or how to change file type in Preview in Lion?

Where is "save as" or how to change file type in Preview in Lion? I used to use Preview to change quickly change a lot of PNGs to either JPEGs or PDFs but with the introduction of versions auto save etc there no "save as" in the File menu. Any suggestions how to get this functionality back or how to get around it within OS X (no Photoshop etc)?

Just wasted 15 minutes looking for that.  What's wrong with Save As?

  • File type icons in CS6 Design and Web Premium

    Hello everyone.
I am running Windows 7, 64 bit. I have recently upgraded from CS5.5 Design Premium to CS6 Design and Web Premium.
I the process, I lost the association of file types (such as .psd) with their relevant programs, which I have now recified.
However, the filetype icons that are associated with each program, in most cases, don't seem to have assigned themselves to their respecitive icons. For example, .psd files now show as a white document with the blue Ps square icon in the centre, and the same for InDesign etc. Oddly, Illustrator has worked and has assigned it's icons correctly.
    For example:
I can't find a method of editing specific file types icons - even then, I wouldn't know where to find the particular icon sets.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance either way.

I used the CS Cleaner (http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html) and followed the steps its really easy.. but ur gonna have to re install you Creative Suite   all u do for the cleaner is open it up then select english (e) ->enter->Agree (Y)->enter->All (1) (which is the first option for a full clean i guess)->enter->Product Number its just basically asking you to input your choice number again (1)->enter and should tell u its all done then after u install CS again go to start-> default programs->associate file type->.psd for example->double click it and select Photoshop even though its probably already selected >.< but just do it again cuz it will refresh all the files on the coputer and whala you should c the correct file dysplay Heres pictures of my files before and after as proof

  • How get File Type Icon Image

how get File Type Icon Image (Windows )
    FileSystemView.getSystemIcon( File );works in swing application, can not be used for javafx.scene.image.ImageView;

    Hmm, good question.
Looking at the FileChooser, it looks like the native chooser is used so possibly the JFX guys didn't have to expose access to the icons to make it work. You might want someone to confirm, but my guess is there is no equivalent yet in JFX.
Assuming there's nothing, you could try the hacks in here to convert the image: Image conversion between AWT and FX
Failing that you're probably looking at raising a JIRA feature request to get it in a future release.
    Cheers,
    zonski

  • Change file type to pdf

How do I change file type to pdf with windows 8 without paying? I was able to do this with windows 7 without paying.

Actually, I guess it's possible you were using paid-for Adobe software and didn't realise it.
Can you remember the steps you followed to make a PDF in your old system?

  • Changing file type when saving doesn't work

How can I fix the problem where, if I change file type when saving, eg from tiff to jpg, the 'jpg' suffix is not appended in the save window? It remains as tiff. This has only started happening recently.

I have a G5 iSight running OSX 10.4.11 with all the latest upgrades. The problem is about a week old.
Yesterday I did a clean install of everything (not because of this problem) which I'm sure would have cleared the problem. But I was playing around with importing all my old PS and InDesign settings via copying the old preference files (and others), and the tiff/jpeg problem has reappeared. Seems to me like one of the files I copied, contains the problem. I suspect the only way out of this is to reload PS. But I was hoping it might be as simple as deleting a certain preference file.

  • Old icons remain after changing file type association

I have several video file types in my Movies folder: MPG, MP4, AVI, and MKV.  Many of the file types are automatically associated with Quicktime Player, (despite it being unable to process them, such as the AVIs).  Being unable to play my MKVs at all, I downloaded VLC player to supplement.  I have since grown to like the additional features of VLC, and would like to use it as my player of choice for all movie files.
Changing the file type associations was simple enough, (Get Info -> Open With, Set as default for each file type), however the pre-associated files still retain their original QT icon.
How do I go about batch changing the incorrect QT-associated finder icons for icons that correctly represent their new association with VLC?
    Thanks for reading

I was having that same trouble, but with ".rar" archives (in my case - OS X Yosemite), I tried all ways to solve it, following all kind of tips, like: choosing a new program as default to open the file, app cleaners, terminal commands, disk utility, etc.. but nothing worked. When finally I got problem solved, how I did it: 1) Download the program: Cocktail (http://www.maintain.se/cocktail/), after downloading, I got the message to register it, I simply clicked on "Remind me later". 2) Now, after installing it, configure Cocktail with this short tutorial, exactly as described (http://www.everythingmacintosh.com/tech-notes/maintain-your-mac-with-mac-os-x-co cktail/). After following 2 steps, Cocktail will be configured and will run, in the end your Mac will restart, you can now check that all your archives will be with correct icon (preview/thumbnail). Hope it helps!

  • File Type Icons Not Working

Hey everyone, the issue I'm haveing is not just with Photoshop, but sense I couldnt find a general CS5 forum, and Photoshop was the last CS5 application I noticed this for I'm hoping to find some answers here.
    So on to the issue....
I have noticed that on other computers (Macs for sure) that Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver etc... are set as the default handlers of certain file types that are associated with each application, and as such, give each filetype there own little icons reflecting such. (see screenshot)
However on my system (Windows 7 Ultimate x64) this does not seem to be the case. I can go in and set them as default manually, which I have done for the filetypes I use most frequently, but I do not get to enjoy the nice icons that are made for each filetype, i just get a bland, default icon that is the same for every filetype.
As you can see, some of the file icons are working just fine (the .ai, .eps and .php) but the files I have had to set manually (.html and .psd) give me the default windows association icon that is simply the applications icon on top of a blank file. To clear up any confusion as to what icons I'm talking about, the icons in the "Change Icon" menu are the ones that should be shown, but are not.
Is there a way to fix this issue?
    Thanks for you help.

    This may help. not sure.

  • Corrupt file type icons in finder

    Hi there,
I discovered a problem with small icons in Finder and it's driving me insane that I can't figure out how it happened and how to remedy it. Hope anyone here can help!
    The symptoms:
The problem concerns .mkv and .srt files. In the list or column view in Finder, these file types have exec icons instead of the regular VLC icons. However, when I change to icon or cover flow view, the correct VLC icons are shown. Also in quick look the correct icons are shown. So, the problem only seems to concern small icons, but not large ones.
I tried to change the icon via Command+I. The preview icons are correct, only in the tool bar the incorrect small exec is shown. However, when I drag-drop the small exec icon from the bar to the large item, also small exec icon in Finder changes to the correct VLC icons. But only for this particular file and for all files of that type. Also when I download a new .srt or .mkv file the small icons are again exec images. SOO weird!
What scares me a little is that I did a another clean install of Yosemite after I discovered this. And nothing changed! What is happening here? I hope someone can help!
    Potential cause:
The problem wasn't there after I updated to Yosemite. I did a clean install and everything was fine. However, at one point I ran the OS X version of Gmaptool  (a .img merge app for Garmin navigation maps). The app is only a command line and the file also has an exec icon. After I ran this command line, the problem occurred. Does anyone know how this could have happened?
Thanks for your help! It's driving me insane!

Perhaps it's a good idea to upload a few screenshots
As you can see in the first three pictures, only small icons show the exec icon. Large ones are the correct VLC icons. The last two show the Info windows. In the first one, you can see the small exec icon in the tool bar. It changed after I dropped this exec icon on the icon field (see second Info picture). However, this only changed the small icon for this particular file, not for all .srt files.
Is there some weird preference causing this? I also found a few system files now have exec icon (see picture below). I think that wasn't the case before. How can I change it? Can I reset the small icons somehow? Would it help to securely erase the hard drive? I have nothing on the drive anyways, so that would be an easy option for me.
    Thanks!

  • Change File Type association to match creator?

I've searched this and other forums, but not seen a similar question. Is there a way to make the Finder open a given file type automatically in its CREATOR application, rather than the associated File Type application?
I have hundreds of files created in Illustrator, all without file extensions, and with PDF compatibility, which means that the Finder sees them as PDFs, not Illustrator files, and opens them in Preview.
Can I tell the Finder NOT to open those in Preview, but still allow PDFs (not created in Illustrator) to retain Preview as their default?
I know you can easily do that on an individual basis, I'm looking for a global solution, so I can still double-click the files and have them open in Illustrator.

Fortunately, for now the OS is recognizing the old icons (from earlier versions of Illustrator). The sad thing is, if I keep those files long enough, I fear the time is coming soon that the OS won't recognize them at all.
If all they need is an extension, open Automator and create a new application. Then select the Files & Folders group and add the Rename Finder Items action. Click "Don't Add" in the alert that appears, unless you want duplicates made of all files you run this script on! Change the popup that reads "Add Date or Time" to "Add Text" and change the Add popup to "as extension", then type the appropriate extension in the box (minus the period). Save it to your desktop, then drop groups of files that need that extension onto it.
It's sad the way Apple jettisons the past, dumping support for the legacy of its users' work.
Nothing in this dumps support for users' work. Those files will continue to work just fine, as long as the application in question (Illustrator) continues to support them.
