Change from K9N2 Diamond to NF980-G65

A question for those with much more tech knowledge then my own. Can I change my mobo out (specs below) and replace it (with a NF980-G65) using the HDD's installed on my existing system. I am aware I cannot do this when changing to another manufacturers board, just don't know if I can when they are the same.
Thanks, Tom

Second that. Spend some money on a SSD-disk, and install to that, while you're at it!
??? Why, what will that buy me?

  • MSI NF980-G65 freezes when trying to boot from disc

I just recently purchased and received an MSI NF980-G65 motherboard to work with my AMD Phenom II x6 1055T, but sadly I have had nothing but trouble.
So far the motherboard posts its bios and has the ability to detect any (and all) of my hard drives when I have them plugged in. The hard drive that has Windows installed on it currently informs me that I need to put in my Windows disc and run the repair utility, which makes sense since I was using a completely different motherboard and CPU before.
It is when I try to press any key to boot from disc that the problem arises. When I press a key on my keyboard while that prompt is on screen, the cursor jumps as if I had hit the tab key and does nothing further.
I have a total of three copies of Windows 7 at my disposal to use, two are DVDs I had burned from using my student discount to get them, and one set (32-bit and 64-bit) were in a retail copy of home premium, all of the discs performed the same action. I had tried using different SATA cables, different power adapters, and even different DVD players to try and remedy the situation.
The hard drive with windows is an IDE hard drive, but I have tried my other SATA hard drives just to be sure, none of which fixed the problem.
I have heard briefly about m-flash, but as far as I can tell, it would appear this new motherboard did come with the latest bios version (1.4).

For the boot, I have tried both setting up the DVD player as the initial boot, and I have tried just selecting it in the boot menu.
As per the posting guide, here are more specific information:
Processor: AMD Phenom II X6 2.8 GHz, 9.0 MB Total Cache, AM3 Socket
Motherboard: MSI NF980-G65 v. 1.2 bios (I'm going to try and flash this to a later now, I didn't know where to look for it before) , 601-7612-010B1004183389
    RAM: G. Skill Ripjaw DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 2gb x 1 until I get this working, then it will be x4
Power Supply: Tagan BZ Series 700W
DVD: Samsung SH-S223 DVD burner with Lightscribe

  • Cannot OC NF980-G65 from on-board switch

    I have built a system:
    Win7 64-bit Professional
    NF980-G65 mobo
AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE CPU
    8G OCZ DDR3 1600 BE memory
Whenever is try to over-clock via the OC switch on the mobo, my PC hangs in POST. Re-booting takes the BIOS back to its default configuration. Is there anything in the BIOS I should be setting so I can try to OC or has anyone had the experience that the AMD 965 can't be overclocked? Maybe this is related to the fact that I can't get SLI to function on the mobo either (see post in AMD64 nVidia boards section)?

Maybe your RAM limits you ,use a slower speed for the ram and try again.Though the BIOS should provide you enough options to do the HTT overclocking from there directly.
When that switch rises the HTT that value will force a higher speed for the RAM ,more than it can probably suport.Using some other RAM devider will lforce the RAM float under it s limit. The CPU itself can limit you too or the Northbridge speed.Decrease the NB multiplier as well if the ram trick doesnt work.
    Good Luck!

  • No voltage change from bios settings on my P7N2 Diamond

    Hello all,
This is my first post here. Yes , I am a noob, so be gentle with me. First things first, I'll give you my system set-up:
    Motherboard: P7N2 Diamond
    Memory: 2X TW3X2G1600C9DHX is a 2048MByte matched pair of DDR3 SDRAM DIMMs
CPU: E8600 Intel core 2 EO stepping
    Graphics card: EVO9800GX2
    HD: Maxtor 280 gig esata
    OS: Vista 64
OK, so here's my problem. I can not seem to change my CPU voltage settings. I go into the bios and change the CPU voltage to whatever I want, but when I boot up windows and open CPU-Z and or Everest, I get matched indications of my CPU voltage running at a constant .99V no matter where I set the voltage in bios. The only way I can see a change of my CPU voltage is by enabling EIST? or whatever the auto voltage control in the bios is called, and then I see a change from .99 to 1.14 depending on the programs that are running, and the overall load on the computer. There appears to be a similar problem with the DDR voltage, or Vdimm. I set it to 2.1 to get my corsair ram to run stable at 1600 but in CPU-Z and everest it says that it is at 1.5 volts. I cant seem to figure out why its doing that. I am thinking that its either a bios problem, a incompatibility problem with the CPU, or a faulty MB. Please let me know what you think.
    Thanks,
    Rod

Ah hah!!!! A voice!!!! .....Well, a font anyway  Thank you NovJoe for responding. I have been checking the boards regularly for a reply. Well, all I can say is that the MB comes with a program called "dual core" that is a board utility, and it matches exactly the voltage readout on CPU-Z and Everest. One program may respond slightly faster than the other, but you can generally see the voltage change "float" when I am using EIST on all the programs, and they correspond with each other. This leads me to believe that they are working, even if not exactly accurate. They do all read .99V when I am not using EIST. I am convinced that the data that they are giving me is correct, because I cranked my CPU voltage to maximum and had no change whatsoever in temperature or performance, or anything else. Thanks again.

  • NF980-G65 ram problems

when i use GSKILL ram witch i have never had a problem. i use a receiver for all my signals video/audio. so if i ever have any thing happen. i can tell. what the receiver dose is act like the signal is looping every second. but there is never a video signal (just a TV no signal blue screen). that is what happens.
now the cause. i put in extra ram. being 4 GB more. same exact ram. 9-9-9-24

a total of 8 GB of ram, but when i did that happened. i take out the ram it was fine. so i thought ok well it could be the new ram. then put the new ram in. then it was fine so long as there was only 4 GB's in . when i put in one of the of the sticks (being 6 GB) 2 GB extra it just did nothing. the board works fine for im using it now to send this, but with 4 GB's of ram and there is an APP i need to use. and can't because it won't hold the extra ram. and when i get the ram working i know i will need a 64-bit windows. the app was using 71 to 82% of 4 GB's of ram.  so i need to know if there is something in BIOS i need to set. or if i need different ram.

good info. i did not know most of that. some i did.
i will try 1333 Mhz. i will let you know on this post. if it works. how ever i know that 1066 dose work. the board info.
    on the main site. says
    Supports Dual DDR3 800/1066/1333/1600/1800/2133 (OC)
    - 4 DDR3 DIMMs (240pin / 1.5V)
    - Supports a maximum memory size up to 16GB.
i did see that and i check the MSI site. every time i buy a new board. oh and fast reply. im really glad to learn something.
It's down to the CPU[memory controller is build in there] not board.

With 2 sticks - full speed [1333, max. supported native speed by CPU],
with 4 sticks you probably will need to reduce the freq. with one level.[e.g 1066 like its current and works]

  • Boot with e-sata External HDD - K9N2 Diamond

    Hello.
Installed Windows Vista Home Premium in one hdd, but want to put it in an external case and boot it from there. Does the K9N2 Diamond support boot with an external e-sata disk ? I know that with usb does, but e-sata can't fin out.

Windows will refuse to boot from it (Microsoft does not want you to have a removable HD
This is somewhat true for external USB Hard Drive.  However, it has nothing to do with Microsoft not wanting you to do anything.  If Windows is installed on a USB Hard Drive, the problem is that when you try to boot from it, Windows will put out a BSOD.  The reason is that during the early boot phase, Windows will fire up the USB Drivers.  When that happens, there is a change of parameters which will cause a short shut-down of USB Functionality.  Ultimately, Windows will not find the USB Drive it has just booted from and tell you that the whole drive or certain data cannot be found.  This can be overcome by modifying parts of the Installation Routine that handles the Installation of the USB Drivers during boot-up phase.
In any case, the problem is related to USB Drives only.  As eSATA-Ports are hosted directly by the SATA Controller, the operating system will basically just treat it as a normal hard drive (Windows would also not know the difference, when you install an eSATA Bracket connected to one or more of the internal SATA Ports.)
Also, AHCI it basically only needed for HotPlug Support.  As long as the hard drive stays connected to the system, it will be treated like a normal SATA Drive.
    Quote
Microsoft does not want you to have a removable HD that you can carry all over the place and boot from
BTW:  This will not work unless the different systems you want to use the installation with are the same or similar to the system configuration that Windows was installed on.  A different video card and a differen chipset may render the installation pretty much useless. Also, when you change between a system that has AHCI Enabled for the SATA Controller to a System running in SATA/IDE Mode ---> and then back to an AHCI System, there is a high chance that the installation will not properly adapt to the hardware change and mess itself up trying to adapt to the situation in terms of driver intialization.  You may run into to numerous BSODs.

  • Graphics upgrade on k9n2 diamond

hi i upgraded my board and cpu recently, i feel my ageing 8800gtx is now the weakest part, getting some slowdown on games not a lot but it's noticable, i also have a 2 games i would like to play at full settings on my 24" monitor.
i set the pc up with 2 gtx 260 which seemed good but they have returned to their home now. leaving the gtx
problems i have is the gtx260's just fit in my case, the gtx will only fit in the top slot (the gtx260 is about half and inch shorter)
so im limited (don't make me change the case!) to a card of 10.5 inches. whats working well? if it worth sli? or should i just get a 280 gtx in the top slot (assuming it's longer than the 260)
any advice? it's gonna cost me so i want to get it right, i have heard the ati cards are a good buy but im guessing i cant do cross fire?

i was thinking 2 gtx260, but i had vista since it was longhorn and the 8800 was one of the first out (and expensive) so i have had plenty of vista /nvidia er joy. to be honest untill a year ago the card, was far from it's full potential and only seems to have reached it, with drivers etc when they pull the damn card, will i have the same 'joy' with the new model, i wonder!

  • K9N2 Diamond: Shared video memory, how to disable?

As on subject: I can see the entry in the bios settings and I can choose the memory amount to share, but I can't disable it (entry is gray and unselectable) and even if I try to set other values than 256M the values resets to it when I save changes to cmos.
In addition windows recognize 512M of ram (which is the maximum value selectable in bios settings about shared memory) less then it would do: I have 4Gb of ram and 2 8800GT 512M: total system ram is 5G. Windows 32 bit see 2,5G of system ram, to reach 4Gb (the maximum overall memory size recognizeble by a 32-bit os) i miss 1,5G, 1 by the graphic boards and the other 512M...I bet is the shared memory. I would disable it so to free up 512M of system ram is there a way to do it?

  • MSI K9N2 Diamond - Issues

First off I would like to greet everyone.  Now on to the fun part.  I just recently upgraded my entire computer.  Despite the poor rating of the K9N2 Diamond on Newegg I ordered the board anyway.  I counted myself fortunate that the board wasn't DOA, however it seems to be the most finicky mainboard I have ever owned.  The following are the components currently installed.
    MSI K9N2 Diamond
    AMD Athlon 64 7750+ BE
2x MSI GeForce 9600 GT OC
    Antec Earthwatts 500W PSU
    4GB (2x2GB) GSkill 1066 RAM
And the little Soundblaster X-Fi card that came with the board.
Here are my issues in (almost) chronological order.
After putting it all together I installed XP Pro x64 so I could take advantage of my 4 gigs of RAM.  The system ran well for a while until I tried to use SLI while playing Far Cry 2.  After about 5 minutes the game froze and nothing short of a hard reset would fix it.  I researched that issue for a while to find that the probable culprit are the drivers.  That was fine.  I realized that my RAM was running at 800, so I went into the BIOS to fix that.  What I read of the documentation on the board told me that RAM would run at 1066 provided it was using an AM2+ CPU, and the 7750+ is AM2+.
Anyway I adjusted the BIOS so that the RAM would run at 1066 and the machine refused to POST.  That was irritating so I pulled the power cable and waited a few minutes.  After plugging it back in and pressing power it again refused to POST.  I spent about an hour and a half trying to get the thing to POST; finally resorting to pulling the CMOS battery for about 15 minutes which made the computer FINALLY POST.
After having several more issues with XP x64 I reformatted and switched to x86.  I tried again to use SLI with the stock drivers that came with the card (ver. 175.xxx) which again froze games.
I decided since I was having so many problems that I should try and flash the BIOS to the current version.  That didn't work well either.  After successfully flashing in Windows with the MSI Live Update utility (which in hindsight may have been a poor choice) the board once again refused to POST.  I thought I had bricked it but fortunately after pulling the CMOS battery again for a few minutes solved the problem.
Cutting to the chase I am now on my third fresh install of Windows and am too worried to change any BIOS settings or enable SLI.  I thought my power supply was the culprit but after getting several opinions I'm postive that the PSU is more than capable of handling the load.  So basically I have a $1600 machine that about 4 times out of ten refuses to POST.
    Any help would be appreciated.

You have noticed it does not run well with memory speed set at 1066, so change that. There lies very little if any performance in the vibration of the "silly" memory.
If something freezes it is a sign of - strangely enough - overheating, processor and/or graphics processor. Much fast memory keeps the processor very busy, and if there is bad vibes(!) between the processor and the memory overheating comes like spam in the mail box.
I couldn't even get the board to POST at 1066, so I just left it at 800.  After three different copies of XP I decided to try Vista.  I figured it couldn't hurt considering the computer doesn't really run well anyway.  Games now crash whether SLI is enabled or not.  Always the same issue.  Game runs for about 5 minutes or so, and then it freezes and CTDs and this little pop up balloon tells me that nvldmmkm.sys has stopped responding and has been recovered.  This puts me in the same boat as I was in with XP.  I spoke to MSI tech support and the guy just sent me an updated BIOS and told me to use that.  It didn't help at all.
Interesting though, I turned on Hybrid SLI support in the BIOS just for kicks and managed to play about 8 or 9 minutes of a game without a crash or freeze.  I don't know how long that would have lasted since I closed the game.  The weird part is my video cards don't even support Hybrid SLI.  On the nvidia website the supported card list goes from 8800 GTX to 9800 GT, and I have two 9600 GTs.  This just keeps getting weirder.
Also as an addendum, the computer no longer shuts down when I tell it to shut down.  I mean everything else shuts down like the video signal to the monitor, disk drives, etc...just...the fans keep going.

  • K9N2 Diamond Hangs pre-POST PCI-Bus not working

    Hello,
I've had a happily working system for over a eyar, but the other day I discovered that the display no longer worked.  So I rebooted and noted the diagnostic leds were RED-RED-GREEN-RED. After digging around and looking at page 2-26 of the K9N2 SLI Platinum's manual, it informed me that I was hanging at Bad memory.  So I tried without ram and with new 800 speed ram, and still the same leds.  Tried new ram in diffrent slots, no change.  Tried only 1 stick, no change. Tried with no ram, mo change. Tried removing all PCI-X & PCI cards and still nothing.  Removed all drive cables and still no change.  In the end, I only have my processor installed and it still hangs at start.
I reinstalled everything and tried another approach.  I used the onboard DVI graphics port and just bided my time.  Got the usual R-R-G-R lights and waited a few minutes.  Eventually I reached the BIOS.  I checked all the settings, it was detecting processor, ram, drives, all were fine. So I let the system eventually boot into win7 and arrived at the desktop.  I then discovered that the sound card was not operating either. This led me to believe that the entire PCI bus had failed.
Has anyone else come across this?  I take it that at this point that my only avenue for fix if to RMA the motherboard.

  • NF980-G65 Quad SLI???

Hello all.  I've searched all over the forums for this topic and couldn't find anything relevant, so I appologize if this topic has already been covered.
The long and short of it:
I had purchased this board as a replacement for a failing ASRock AM2+/AM3 Nvidia based mb.  I had originally had 2 identical PNY 9800 gx2's working fine on my Asrock board, but since attempting to run them in quad sli on the MSI board, i've had nothing but problems.  Those problems being, Windows 7 boots up, gets to logon screen, and freezes up, forcing a hard shutdown.  I've also had to do several windows repairs, and sadly...I've lost my D drive... (a 500gb hdd I had been using for storage)
I've run the Safe Mode/Normal mode gambit:  Disabled all services, then bring them up one at a time.  Win7 seems to hang, once I enable either the Nvidia drivers, or Aero effects/themes...essentially anything graphical.
I've uninstalled/reinstalled the nvidia drivers, (196.60?  NOT the 196.75, as this has been removed from Nvidia's site due to the overheat issue) reset the bios and nothing seems to work.
    The question:
I've read in several places that this board is supposed to be Quad SLI compatible (requiring a space between both pci-e x16 slots) but from my experience, I'm starting to wonder if thats true.
    What am I doing wrong???

    * Check BIOS option[Chipset Feature] "On-Chip VGA": Enable/Disable

There is an option to enable/disable these in Bios, but I'm not sure what setting they're supposed to be at.

Have you attached the SLI bridge between them?
Have you connected power cables to each VGA's?
Yes the SLI bridge is connected, as well as both 6-pin and 8-pin connectors.  I also verify they are receiveing power, because both of the card's pin connectors (not sure if thats what they're called) are lit up green, and not yellow or red.

That means that you can't install VGA drivers or can't enable the SLI once they are installed?
Exactly.  Everytime I do so, even after changing the memory timings from 1333 to 1066 it still crashes.

You have pretty much three options right now:
    1) Install a processor officially supported by BIOS Version 2.3 to start the system and then update your BIOS.
    2) Ask in a local computer shop or contact your reseller to do the same thing for you.
    3) Alternatively, you can try this (at your own risk, of course, and there is no guarantee that it will work):
    - Download the latest BIOS Archive: http://download1.msi.com/files/downloads/bos_exe/7375v24.zip
    - Unpack the BIOS File (A7375NMS.240) and rename it to AMIBOOT.ROM
    - Copy the AMIBOOT.ROM file to an empty floppy disk
    - hook up a floppy disk drive to your K9N2 Diamond and insert the floppy disk with AMIBOOT.ROM on it
    - hook up a PS/2 Keyboard and disconnect all hard drives, optical drives and USB Devices (and use one memory stick only)
    - Clear CMOS with main A/C power cable removed from PSU
    - Start-up the system and press CTRL + Home on your PS/2 Keyboard multiple times after start-up
    - If you are lucky, the key command will trigger the AMI BIOS Recovery Routine which will attempt to read and program the AMIBOOT.ROM File on the floppy disk.
If option number 3) does not work for you, go back to 1) or 2).

The board I tried a different CPU does not work
Please advise whether it is a bad CPU, motherboard, both, or was damaged only to the BIOS.
Voltage processor running at 1.55 V OK-cooled liquid.

I don't know if there are beeps for faulty memory on this motherboard. Please try memory, too.
Did you maybe mistype, that you get to BIOS? If you did mistype, things are not as bad as you fear.
    Memory??
I try to turn on the PC, nothing happens. Only when I disconnect from the motherboard connector PWR-1, the motherboard gets going, but unfortunately no image

  • GTS250s in SLI on NF980-G65 mobo

I have installed two GTS250s on a NF980-G65 mobo. One is in PCI-e slot 1 (closest to CPU) and the other is in PCI-e slot three. I'm running:
    Win 7 Pro 64-bit
    MSI NF980-G65 mobo
AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE CPU
    8G OCZ 1600 BR RAM
For the life of me, I cannot get the second card (slot 3) to SLI. Whenever I go into the nVidia control panel and select SLI, any game I start has red bars flickering down the screen that disappear when SLI is not configured. Another thing is that the nVidia System monitor shows that all the third card's speeds have been reduced by 2/3's (hopefully I can attach a screen print of this display which also shows that the mobo's bus speed for these slots is exactly the same). This problem is the same if the boards are reversed or placed in the one and two slots (doing this causes whichever board that's in slot one to extremely overheat because of the close tolerances between the two boards).
Is there a SLI configuration that I'm missing in the BIOS? I'm running nVidia driver 197.45 so it's the most current.
Sorry, I seem to not be able to insert any picture or document here showing the screen print of the low speeds.
Is this a mobo, card manufacturer or nVidia problem?

Could be something to do with CPU Throttling and Windows Power Settings.  Check under 'Control Panel/System and Security/Power Options' and 'Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Power Options'.  Believe the theory is to set your Power settings up for "Performance".  Don't know for sure, just remember reading something about it from research I've done before.  Came across what I just mentioned from Googling "windows 7 power settings and sli".
EDIT:  OK, I found something else I was looking for.  When under 'Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Power Options' , when you select 'High Performance', continue on and click on "Change plan setting", then on next window click on "Change advanced power settings".  Check there for any SLI settings and in particular for 'PCI Express/Link State Power Management', select "Off".  Under "Processor power management", set the 3 settings shown under it for 100%, Active, and 100% respectively.  You'll find that under CP/S&S/PO, the same setting.  Go ahead and be redundant and check to see the settings you changed under Hardware and Sound show there as well.

Ok I see NF980-G65 manual it says 4 DDR3 DIMMs 240PIN/ 1.5v is this the minimum voltage that it supports? Whats the highest?
The memory I bought is 8GB Patriot Viper II Extreme Performance DDR3-1600Mhz PC3-12800 Modules
    Speed PC3-12800 (1600MHz), Memory Timings 7-7-7-20, Voltage 1.9v
Here is the website for info on the ddr3 memory

Just because it says it was tested on intel setups doesn't mean it won't work with amd systems! Which its working fine on my amd setup at auto voltage running 1600Mhz I just wanted to know what the maximum voltage this msi board was ok with?

It may work, but its not guaranteed and there is high change to fail
