Change Hard Drive Icon for Bootcamp Partition

I'd like to change the desktop icon (on the Leopard side) for the Vista Bootcamp partition, however, the normal strategies don't work (presumably due to the read only properties of NTFS). Is that icon stuck as the generic one until I make NTFS writable?

Well, NTFS is not writable by OS X, but you can change the name and possibly the icon when booted into Windows.
Although you can read/write NTFS in OS X by installing MacFuse and the NTFS-3G_2009.2.1u1-ublio-catacombae filesystem, I don't know if it enables changing the Desktop icon. You will find both items at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

Upgrading MacBook Pro Hard Drive - cannot get Bootcamp partition to work

The other day, I decided to replace my 320 GB hard drive with a 1 TB hard drive/SSD hybrid. I did a little bit of research about cloning the drive before that, and it seemed pretty straight forward to clone the OS X partition, but I wasn't really sure about cloning my Windows partition. Originally, my 320 GB hard drive had 2 partitions: 220 GB for OS X Mavericks, and 100 GB for Windows 8.1.
I bought the new drive with an external enclosure and plugged it in. The first thing I did was open Disk Utility and partitioned the new hard drive (750 GB HFS+, 250 GB NTFS). I figured I would need to partition it first and clone each partition separately. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the OS X partition, and it worked with no problem (I immediately could restart my computer and boot with the partition on the new drive, while it was still plugged in by USB).
Next, I tried using CCC to clone the Windows partition the same way (I realize now that CCC cannot do this). 7 hours later, the cloning was complete, but there was an error that a couple files couldn't be copied. I tried copying them manually but it didn't work. I wasn't sure if the Windows partition would work, so to find out, I switched the hard drives and put the old 320 GB one in the external enclosure. I booted my computer and it booted the new OS X partition with no problem. It also mounted the Windows partition that I cloned with CCC, and I can access all of the files in it. However, when I restarted and held down "option", it would not let me boot the Windows partition.
After some googling, I realized CCC is not able to clone a bootcamp partition and make it bootable, so I opened disk utility and deleted the Windows partition (using the minus button), then recreated it (using the plus button). I downloaded Winclone (paid $30), which supposedly can clone a bootcamp partition. I opened Winclone and it seemed pretty simple: you just choose the source partition on the left, and the target on the right. I plugged in the USB enclosure with my old hard drive, and in the Winclone menu the original Windows partition popped up. I chose that as my source, and chose to copy it to the new NTFS partition on the new drive that I created. I left it on overnight, and when I woke up it said it was completed.
I now had two drives mounted: my NTFS partition that I created, and a new one that said "EFI". I have no idea what EFI is. My NTFS partition looks like it has all of the files from my original Windows partition on it; however, when I restart it does not allow me to boot with it, although I now have the option to boot EFI. When I select EFI, I am given the Windows 8.1 start up screen (with the blue Windows logo), but then an error message pops up saying something like there is an issue and it needs to restart (it restarted before I could read the whole thing).
When I boot in OS X, I only have the NTFS partition (with all my Windows files) mounted, and no EFI. When I restart, I can still boot EFI, but I always get the same message and then it restarts.
Is there any way I can fix my Windows partition so that it works the same way it did on my old drive? What is EFI? Can I delete it? How can I make the NTFS partition, which seems to have all of my files, bootable? I only want 2 partitions: one for OS X, and one for Windows. Also, can I do all of this without having to reinstall either of the operating systems?

Hmm, that's a good question!
I headed over to the twocanoes website (the folks that make Winclone) and their guide mentions something about running Sysprep before you create the Windows image. If you skipped that step, that may be why you're having issues

Step 24 in that guide also mentions copying a Boot file - were you able to/did you do that?

Missing hard drive space after bootcamp partition

After making a 60gb partition with Boot Camp Assistant, Bootcamp closed without error message (i assumed it was trying to restart but i had programs running). However now in disk utility or when i try to run the windows disc, there is no partition available even though the 500gb hard drive shows up as 420gb used and 18gb unused (and 499gb big).
I have tried repairing in disk utility on startup
i have reset the NVRAM or whatever it is called.
Can't run boot camp assistaint again because it says i require at least 10gb of space.
Can anyone help me finish the installation?

If done correctly it should not be necessary to reinstall anything, just restore the clone.
Buy 2 drives, a backup drive should be at least as large as the drive it is backing up, and yours is almost full at the moment.
My suggestion, clone your internal drive to an external, this is for restoration. The restoration can be done to any compatible drive so buy the biggest you can afford/fit.
Backup is another issue, if you choose Time Machine your existing internal drive will be too small to accommodate a 1Tb replacement drive for very long, but it's a start.
Choose what you wish to do, post back if you need assistance.

Will formatting my hard drive remove my bootcamp partition? Also, downgrading...?

I have 2 partitions, one for Mavericks and one for Windows 8. I would like to do a clean install of Mavericks. I have already redownloaded Mavericks and I'm about to put it on a USB so I can boot from it and reinstall the operating system. I read somewhere that to format your hard drive and do a clean install, you have to boot into the USB and then you'll have an option to format your hard drive from there. I'm not sure if that's correct so that's another thing I would like to inquire about.
Another thing I would like to know about, although not relevant to my previous questions, is this: Is it possible to get a free download of Mountain Lion (legally, of course)? I would much rather do a clean install of Mountain Lion than Mavericks, but I've searched google and there seems to be no way to get it for free. However, I did read that it's possible to get it free within 30 days of purchasing your Mac but that 30 days have long passed for me.
So my 3 questions are the following:
1) Will formatting my hard drive remove my already existing bootcamp partition? (If it does, I don't mind but I would still like to know)
2) How exactly do I format my hard drive?
3) Is it possible to get Mountain Lion for free so I can downgrade?

Formatting a HDD will delete all user data on the drive. Yes you can do it on an older MBP by connecting to it via USB, but do you really want to? If the repair shop says the HDD is functional, there is no need to wipe it and reinstall the OSX. The problem then is something else.
It would be helpful if you indicated the EXACT model/year MBP that you have.

Changing hard drive icon?

a long time ago i changed the icon on my macbooks hard drive and since then ive installed boot camp. After that i erased the icon and reverted the icon image to the original icon (the gray silver looking one). But when i hold option when restarting my macbook to load the hard drive menu to either boot into os x or boot camp the icon on os x is still that old icon that ive erased before.. how do i change that icon image? remember the icon on my desktop for the hard drive is the stock one already. any help would be great! thanks

You can change the icon for all networked drives but not just one. You'd use something like Candy Bar do do it.

Hard drive icon appears as folder icon in dock

When I drag the hard drive icon for any of my hard drives (Mac Pro) to the dock, a folder icon rather than hard drive icon appears in the dock. It functions properly, accessing the full drive, but is harder to distinguish from the other folders in the dock.
Why does this happen? Is there any way to get the hard drive icon to appear in the dock?

You bet. Make an alias to the Hard Drive (you can put it inside the hard drive itself if you like). Then drag the alias to the dock. It will show up as the drive.

One of the things I've found with OS X (at least with Snow Leopard, which is my first excursion into OS X), is that all too often the thumbnail displayed on a file, whether a file created or one downloaded, is a false thumbnail. That is, when you do a Get Info on the file the icon in the upper left is the generic icon for that file type, rather than the thumbnail displayed in Finder. Makes it a bit difficult to copy.
Apparently Finder uses Preview in the background to generate the displayed thumbnail without actually creating one.
What I've resorted to doing, particularly with graphic images, is to process them with GraphicConverter - I have its prefs set to automatially add thumbnails and previews. With an individual file this means opening it in GC and doing a Save As. However, a much easier and faster way is when there are two or more such files; I put them in a common folder and drop the folder onto GC. GC then opens them in a catalog view, in the process adding real thumbnails and previews to each automatically. Doesn't take long to do several hundred files that way.

How in the HECK can I change my Hard Drive icon??!??!!

I've tried searching these discussion forums for how to do this, but the question has always remained unanswered! Does ANYbody know how to use this? I'd buy applecare but I'm a student and can't afford it. Would somebody please figure out how to make it so that you can paste a new icon on top of the standard icon for 10.3.9? It's driving me crazy that after I copy the icon I want to use for my hard drive that I can't paste it on top.
And I've tried doing a permissions repair in Disk Utility.

That's how other people do it, HVlaar; it's the standard procedure. Works fine for me. Are you logged into an admin account? Have you considered that changing your hard drive icon probably isn't an important thing to do anyway?

How do I change the desktop icon for an MS-Dos Fat formatted flash drive in Lion?

I have a bunch of flash drives I need to format for work, and we want to put our company logo as the icon for each drive. We wanted to format them as MS-Dos Fat so that they'll be readable and writeable on both Mac and Windows computers. But when I format them that way and change the icon, it displays as a generic preview JPEG image instead of the real image or even the default hard drive icon.
I managed to fix it so the icon will display properly in Snow Leopard, but in Lion the drive still mounts with the generic Preview thumbnail.
Is there any way I can easily format a flash drive so that a) it will be readable and writeable on Windows and OSX machines and b) have the icon for the drive appear correctly on Lion, Snow Leopard, and windows machines?

Command- i will open the info pane of your icon.
Try opening and "selecting all" ⌘-A (of your preferred image,) then copy and paste your preferred image on the high-lighted icon in the upper left.

Won't allow me to change my hard drive icon

Hello anyone! Here's my problem...I've been using Mac since 1985 and this has always been how you did this and now it's not working, has something changed?
1. Copy icon, picture, photo
2. Click once on hard drive icon on desktop and choose Get Info
3. Click on hard drive icon in Get Info window
4. Paste
5. Voila!
The blue halo that usually appears around the icon in the Get Info window is not appearing anymore. I've tried unlocking the Owner and changing from System to me as user and that doesn't help. I've tried renaming the hard drive and no luck. Has anyone else had this issue and can it be resolved. I don't want Cookie Monster as my icon anymore! Thanks!

There are a number of possible problems:
1. If you use Preview to copy the pix you might not have actually gotten the picture onto the Clipboard, so there is nothing to paste. You can check this by either "Show Clipboard" from the Finder's Edit menu, or try pasting first onto a new folder. If it doesn't paste into the folder let us know. It could be that you haven't gotten the desired picture "active" in Preview--if, for instance, it is an icns file you need to select the 128x128 icon and then click in the actual picture part of Preview's window, then copy.
2. If your picture is indeed on the Clipboard and will paste onto a folder, but you can't paste onto the drive because the wee GetInfo icon won't highlight you've got a permissions problem. I've had luck changing the icon by TEMPORARILY giving Everyone read and write permissions to the drive, using GetInfo.
As a last resort you will have to use the Terminal, there are several different things you can do, of various levels of complexity.

My PC died this summer (I still have it though).
Now when syncing any of the multiple devices (ipods,ipads, iphones) that we have with my mac book, itunes states that "an error occurred" or the "app cannot be found". Itunes wants me to erase the device and sync with my macbook. The message "The iPhone “Renee’s iPhone” is synced with another iTunes library on “Renee PC”. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library? An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library."appears.

u can give try to using external enclosre and backup ur files. I hope u will get files back. or using external enclosre with ur hdd boot into Linux and try to mount ur harddisk.

I see 10.6.3 in your profile---is tthat what you are trying to load? If so, it won't work. No PowerPC Mac like your G5 can run a Mac OS version higher than 10.5.8

Change position of hard drive icon?

Is there any way to change the position of my hard drive icon? It currently sits in the right top corner of my screen but I'd like to move it down a bit. But each time I move it and put the computer to sleep, when it wakes up it's right back where it was before.

In the Finder, go to the View Menu, and click on Show View Options (Cmd-J). Uncheck the "Snap to grid" item. Then you should be able to re-arrange to your heart's content.

My Macbook starts up, shows the screen saver, then immediately goes to sleep. I tap the spacebar, it comes back for a second, shows the tool bar and the hard drive icon then immediately "goes to sleep". This can go on forever, on, sleep, on, sleep.

This sounds like screen curtain may be enabled. Screen curtain is a feature that allows display privacy. To disable screen curtain while VoiceOver is enabled, you can three finger triple tap the screen to disable this feature. You may need to press the home button once in order to process these steps.
