Change iBook network "name?"

I logged into my router today to see what all was connected to it. I found all my computers and devices, but one was listed as a "*" for the name. It ended up it was my iBook. For example, if my iPod touch is connected to my router, under the connected devices list, it says 'iPod." If my Dell PC is plunged in, it says (the name I windows).....etc. You get the point. So I was wondering, is there a way so that when my iBook is connected, it doesn't just have a star or come up blank? I want it to say "iBook," or "Airport" or at least something so I can identify it. Thanks!

See - the star is the iBook (I can confirm IP too) the iPod is my iPod touch, and the last one that I blanked out is the name of my PC

Everything Rick has said is like an echo to what is happening to me.
I have tried re-installing iTunes, and restarting the Bonjour service, sadly there is no change.
earlier before i updated iTunes it recognised my iPod but said that I had to update iTunes in order for it to work.
So i updated iTunes but now it's not even showing the device anywhere.
In case this helps:
OS: Windows 8.1
iTunes version: 11.3.1.8
Device: 5th generation iPod touch 16GB with ios 7

Changing the network name on my wireless router?

I bought my linksys router a few months ago and did all the setup stuff that day, including changing the network name from the default. I want to change the name to something different, but when I went to the setup address, there was no box in which to put the new network name [I was on the Basic Wireless Settings Tab in the Wireless section]. Help please?

What is the model number of the router? Access your admin pages again and select wireless tab and then select the MANUAL button. There you will find what you seek (SSID).

Can I change the network name?

Can I change the network name on a newly set up Airport wireless network? I have just set up a new 3Gb Time Capsule and got so involved with trying to make it work that I just accepted the suggested name.

I have a 2Tb in process.
If this means that you are currently backing up data to the Time Capsule, let that process complete before you make any other changes.
I think I can see how to change the network password in 'Keychain'. Is that ok?
No, you change the wireless network password the same way that you would change the wireless network name....using the same window in AirPort Utility that is pictured above.
Simply Edit / backspace out the current password and enter the new password that you want to use. Do the same to Verify and then click Update to save the changes.

Change Computer Network Name

Hi all,
I'm trying to change the network name of my computer that windows pcs use to connect. Currently, to connect to my computer, I have to type "\\new-host.linksys\" in explorer to connect to my macbook. I've found where to change the "workgroup" that the computer connects to, but I can't seem to find where to change that new-host.linksys to something like macbook.
Any help would be appreciated.

I would suggest you download Bonjour for windows.
Then once installed you windows pc's can connect to your computer using its machine name.
if you goto your sharing preferences and give your mac a name such as macbook
then its bonjour name is macbook.local

Will changing Airport network name affect clients?

Will changing the network name of my Airport Extreme affect the login of wifi clients?
In other words, my previous wifi network name was: John's Airport. I want to change it to John's wifi network.
If the clients have their current login saved on their Macs, will they need to re-login again even though the password is not changing (just the identifying name)?

Yes, if you change the network name (that is, the SSID), all clients will have to select the new network and if the network is protected by WEP or WPA, you will have to re-enter the passcode once for each client.

The way our current setup is that each room has a name, and the room name is the computer network name as well as the user account name.

you mean the computer name is like "iMac-24inch-at-room-1.local" when you browse the networks ?
If so, Just change it in System Preferences->Sharing.
or the wireless SSID, eg. Airport connected to "Room 1" ?
if this is the case, just select the new room BS and set that in Airport Pref network.

HT201577 I changed the network name on my time capsule and lost my airport express...how do I get it back?

I have tried all of the resets (soft/hard/factory default) suggested in other answers to people but cannot locate the network of my airport express. It just keeps flashing amber. I want to add it back to my time capsule to extend my network as it was before I reset the name. HELP

Which model of AirPort Express do you have?
If you are not sure, the model number is on the side or bottom of the Express. Hard to see.....you may need a magnifying glass. The model number starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.
Post back with that info.......if you want to get the Express set up again to work with the Time Capsule.
You do have another option as well, although you will have to think in reverse on this one.
Change the network name back to the original name on the Time Capsule, so the Express will work correctly on the network.
Now, change the network name on the AirPort Express. It will be blinking amber when you do this, so power it off.
Then, change the network name on the Time Capsule and let it restart.
Now, power up the AirPort Express and it will join up with the Time Capsule network since you have already programmed it with that information.

Changing my network name

My network for Airport says my first name and last name Network.. I thought I changed it but it hasn't. Is there a way I can take that off?

The Network Name or SSID, can be changed within the AirPort Admin Utility.
To change the Network Name on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), using the AirPort Admin Utility, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
AirPort tab
o Name: <enter the desired Network Name or SSID>
o Click on "Update" to save the settings to the AX.

How to change the network name and line name on iPad 4?

Could anybody help me how to fix this problem?
Previously I used qb (a mobile network in Cambodia) for my iPad 4 (iOS 7.0.4 non-jailbreak) the network name is qb.
The problem is that after I changed to use SMART (another mobile network in Cambodia) for this iPad the network name is still in QB and the Line name changed to SMART.
I don't know how to fix it now.
I have tried many methods as in restore through iTunes, reset network setting, reset all setting... but I still could not get the solutions.
I do hope to get it fix through all your experience.

E4200 Change Guest Network Name

Is it possible to change the Guest Network Name on the E4200? And if so, is it possible to do so without having to do a complete reset of the router and without using the Cisco Connect software?

Yes you need to download and install the Cisco connect Software. That is the only way to manage the Guest account for the router (unless things have changed). Be aware the new SSID will still have the -guest tagged to it.
Linksys is the only vendor that does this. Also the Guest account in NOT encrypted for security. I would not use it in a public place at all. This is for home use only. All other manufacturers except Linksys, can use full WA2-AES for encrypted information on their Guest Networks. You can also name your Guest SSID to anything you want. Something to think about.

Computer name change and Network name

Recently I changed my computer name from "XY Z's Computer" to one without the dreaded apostrophe and the spaces.
I did this in Sharing under Computer Name:
However, after doing this and rebooting, the new name is there - good - but if in Sharing Preferences, I click Internet Sharing and then click Airport Options, my original name is there, under the title, Network name:
Is there a single location where these changes can be made simultaneously?
Are there any other places where one might find the original computer name?
Is this a bug or simply something not well-documented that I should have known about?

A guest at our house was using his ipad and changed the apple netwrok name to another and put a password on it. How do I eliminate this netwrok and get back to the Apple Network?

Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details on resetting the password. Once that is done, you can access the base station to change its Wireless Name (or SSID) back to what you prefer. To discourage other "guests" from changing the AirPort settings, you should also change the default base station Administrator password.

E3000 Changing guest network name

When I first configured the E3000 I called the device CiscoRouter, and I had:
a) CiscoRouter
b) CiscoRouter-guest
I then decided to change the name of the device to: Alberto-Network, and now I have:
a) Alberto Network
b) CiscoRouter-guest
I have not foud a way to change the name of the guest conexion.
Cisco COnnect lets me change the password for the guest netwok, but not the name.
How do I change the name of the guest conexion??????

Like dalime said you have to set the Router name and then the guest account is generated based on that. But it's a bit dumb. If you've configured your router name from the web panel or after you setup your guest account it will generate a generic Cisco name.
Solution:
1) Turn off Guest
2) Change the router name (Like dalime showed)
3) (cancel) the silly usb key interchange request
4) Change the router name back to what it should be
5) (cancel) the silly usb key interchange request
6) Turn on Guest and now it will recognize the correct router name to add "-guest" in the end of
