Change? in iDVD OneStep from iLife '09 to iLife '11

I used iDVD OneStep with my Panasonic Digital Movie Camera to quickly back-up to DVD's. I recently upgraded to iLife '11. While iDVD recognizes the camera as attached, it does not recognize the content on the camera to download and create a DVD. Did something change in the most recent version to iLife '11 in regards to iDVD OneStep? Any suggestions to get around this?

Hi GenoMacProUser
Welcome. I see no one has yet addressed your question / concern here. So I'll give it a shot. Keeping in mind I don't yet have iLife'11 since I'm still working with iLife'09 on a Dual G5 2.0 PPC. So I'm not speaking from direct experience here but rather from the replies and threads I've seen posted on this forum. It would appear or rather it has been suggested by at least one member on this forum, that there has been one significant change based on these comments. That is, when referring solely to iDvd's One Step. In the past iDvd's One Step was the only option for making a Dvd with No Menu whatsoever. I'm not 100% certain you can do this any more within iLife'11. Or at least I've read where the app now generates a "hidden" menu even in one step. I can't verify this myself. I'll have to wait and see from feedback from others who actually use the latest version /iLife'11 as opposed to earlier versions.
If the above is correct (big if) then I could see where this might also have an effect on device (camera/s) recognition and on the content recognition of said cameras. Some newer models of camcorders and cameras will be added while other older models may eventually be dropped. Seems logical anyway. Again, this is just a guess on my part.

  • How to load IDVD (only) from ILife'11

I am waiting on delivery of ILife '11 package. How do I install (only) IDVD from this package? I have IOS Mountain Lion and it came with IMovie,Iphoto and Gagageband.  I believe they are included in ILife'11 along with some other apps.  My need is for IDVD.  Should I be aware of any pitfalls, when trying to load only IDVD?  I am a novice to a Mac and please offer suggestions, put to simple terms. Thanks.

Click on the Customize button when it comes up:

  • Why Can't I get Idvd window up to drag movie from iMovie. OS 10.8.5  idvd is from iLife '11

Have just bought update iLife 11 and installed idvd.  When I open it, it just spins 'load themes'. I dont want to use the themes - I just want the Idvd window to come up so I can drag the movie into it, loop it and burn the dvd.
Thannks for your help - I don't know much about this stuff!

Themes must be installed and used for iDVD to work. It's the nature of the beast.
Did you do a custom install?  Check in your HD/Library/Application Support folder to see if there's an iDVD folder.  If it's not there check in your Home/LIbrary/Applications Support folder.  This folder is invislbe since Lion so you'll need to do the following:
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible in Lion or Mt. Lion enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Optionsmenu to bring the this window:
I suggest you move the application to the Trash bin in the Dock and reinstall iDVD from the iLife 11 disk under the Customize option or use the demo version of Pacifist and do a customize install of iDVD which will include the themes.

  • When was iDVD removed from iLife?

I acquired a late 2011 17 inch Macbook Pro (Lion 10.7.3) in April of 2012. I am not sure whether iLife in that version came with iDVD or not. Can any one tell me if it did? Unfortunately I didn't try to burn a DVD until after upgrading to 10.7.5 and I'm wondering if iDVD was removed in that upgrade.

They didn't kill iDVD to force people to buy iCloud. The two are completely unrelated. iDVD was dropped most likely because there were free or low cost alternatives on the market and it would cost too much to rewrite iDVD to compete.
You were ripped off because you bought iLife on Amazon.com without properly researching. The issue of iDVD being omitted from future iLife updates had been widely discussed long before you bought your Mac. Had you asked here first we would probably have suggested buying iLife '09 Boxed Set. Unfortunately, much of it would not be updatable after Lion's 10.7.4 release.
I would hardly call one piece of software a demanding reason to return to Windows. You are now on a new platform with different software. Much about it you don't know. It's all a learning experience, just as it was for Windows.

  • Can't open iDVD v7 from iLife 08 on Lion?  Please help

I just got a new iMac pre loaded with Lion.  I had iLife 08 on my old 2008 MacBook Pro.  I did a custom install with the iLife disk and only installed iDVD.  It placed it in the application folder but when i try to open it i get an error message saying I cant use this version on MAC OS X.  Then it says i have version 7, which i thought was the latest version.  Is it possible to have idvd on this iMac?

Roxio Toast is great, it allows you to burn DVD's in standard definition and in high definition. However, it is also very bare bones... Many of the features that you may like in iDVD, are missing in Roxio Toast.
The following developers make some very good iDVD alternatives...

  • Downloading iDVD only from  iLife software

Being as I dont have iDVD included  I looked at ebay and saw there was an iLife 09 on offer but before buying it, I wondered what would happen in the downloading process or whether i can single out iDVD as I dont wish to lose any of my current iLife applications? thank you

If you purchase the boxed iLife 09 disc  you can do a custom install with it and install only iDVD.
Then apply the latest iDVD 7 updaters to get all of the most recent features and themes.

  • How do you uninstall iDVD from iLife '08?

I've tried numerous times to remove the iDVD components from *iLife '08* from my system so that I can reinstall iDVD from *iLife '06*. (Why Apple does not provide an Uninstall option is a mystery to me.) I've removed the application file and the Preferences file, but there must be other files that I'm overlooking (such as the Themes file). Can anyone provide me with a _list of all the components_ (by exact file name) I need to remove along with the _exact paths_ to their locations? iDVD/iLife '08 will not run correctly on my system, so I really need to try and reinstall *iDVD/iLife '06*. If anyone can provide such a list I'm sure it will help a great number of people who run into similar problems, and you will be a hero forever! Many Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You can install iDVD 6 and run it but as Ian pointed out you'll probably have to manually import photos, iMovie files, etc. into an iDVD project. The media browser probably won't work. You can certainly try it though. To uninstall iDVD 7 delete the application, the preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, and all files with iDVD in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder.

  • IDVD won't install from iLife '09 disk

Are there any reports of bad iLife '09 DVD pressings? I just tried to install iLife on two of my late model Macs- a Dual 2.3GHz Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) with Superdrive, and an Intel iMac 24" (Mid-2007) model- and the installer grayed out the iDVD selection in the Custom Install on both machines, telling me that it could only install iDVD on Macs with a SuperDrive. WTH? They BOTH have SuperDrives, and they each have an install of iDVD from iLife '08. I know that these SuperDrives both work, because I've used iDVD to burn DVDs on both of them. What am I missing?

Honestly I don't know if iDvd'08 vs. iDvd'09 are the very same version. But they are very close. Not much has changed if you are looking at iDvd alone. Still no blu-ray support within either version. Seems to me that Roxio Toast and it's Blu-ray plug in, picks up where iDvd left off (with the exception of Apple's Final Cut Studio which is much more money and has rather large learning curve).
Btw, this is not intended to compare Toast with iDvd since really one is authoring software vs. a disc burning utility. It's like comparing apples and oranges (no pun intended). However, Toast is getting more improvements lately vs. iDvd.
Did a search on Yahoo and here's what came up which seems like a valid assessment:
iLife '09 isn't as large of an update as previous iLife releases. In fact, iDVD was hardly changed, if at all. GarageBand received a facelift and has a bunch of new features, probably the most prominent of which being the artist lessons. iMovie got a few new features like image stabilization, themes and more, and isn't as annoying to use as the previous version. iPhoto got a lot of small tweaks, as well as the Faces and Places features and integration with Facebook and Flickr. iWeb also got a few enhancements, like more themes, more publishing options, and more widgets.
As for which is better, go with iLife '09. Both are good suites of applications, but if you have the money, go ahead and upgrade. The few new features you'll find are worth it.

  • Urgent help please - iDVD from iLife 09 - Won't start normal, can't quit ..

    All,
I was in the middle of a job and things were going fine. Incorporating some changes to template supplied. I really don't know what I did, but now I cannot exit iDVD. Each attempt to quit ends with a "unexpected end", and any start of iDVD starts with the last one there. I can drag and drop existing projects but can't start a new one. I've tried deleting prefs file - didn't help. I did the "boot the OS X install and fix permissions" ... still nothing. It just seems stuck with this inability to exit cleanly. Do I need to reinstall, if so, what's the best way? Should I delete the one I have and install from iLife '09 disk?
I'm right in the middle of trying to finish up a job.. Thanks in advance!!

Sounds like you have adequate boot volume space. What I would try first is to copy all video assets for iDvd to the boot volume since iDvd likes things where it can easily find them. Then I'd eject the 3rd party ext. HHD. Pro apps give you a bit more latitude in this regard but iDvd tends to be picky about what it will or will not use (at least when compared to apple's pro apps / DVDSP).
Btw, you did properly format the ext. firewire HDD with apple's disc utility, did you not?

Location of the assets has never been a problem and isn't here (nor should it be, else Apple wouldn't give us the ability to put projects elsewhere) .
It can work with every bit of the asset if I drop the project file onto the dock icon. I also have and use Final Cut Studio Pro so I'm well aware of its capabilities. All drives, eSATA, FW800, and USB are formatted correctly for Intel based Mac.
I hooked up the backup system drive, copied the plist from there, and renames all the DVDPROJ files so iDVD could not find them. A bit Draconian, but so far it is letting me back in normally, and exit normally. I'll have to retrace the steps, but as long as it holds hopefully I won't hit it again.
Interestingly, after my first attempt at deleting the prefs file, iDVD did not generate a new one, which was odd. So hopefully I'm back to a solid starting point.
On a side note, is there ANYWAY at all to add additional font sizes to the drop down list for text? I know in earlier versions there were sliders that allowed for font sizes to be changed. There are a few places on this project (4:3) where I'd like to keep things in bounds for SD NTSC output, but have text a bit larger.
    Thanks again...
    Jay S.

  • Can I install iDVD (only) from an iLife 11 CD on a new (late 2011) on-line MacBook Pro/Lion purchase that no longer included it?

Can I install iDVD (only) from an iLife 11 CD on a new (late 2011) on-line MacBook Pro/Lion purchase that no longer included it?

Purchasing iLife 11 on disk is an easy thing to do. ILife 11 will include iDVD.
If you have iDVD on another Macintosh you can transfer it to your new computer. That procedure has been discussed here many times, if you do a search you will find that procedure.

  • Purch. & installed upgrade from iLife 2 to iLife 08, but I have questions..

    Hi ~
_Purchased & installed upgrade from iLife 2 to iLife 08, but I have questions..._
First I made sure I backed up my 5,500 photos in iPhoto to an external hard drive. (The only downfall to this backing-up process is that I haven't found an easy way to back-up the comments attached to each photo. Any advice on this? Part of the "horror" to losing one's photos is also losing the comments added to them over the years.)
Back to the install... I installed iLife 08 and it installed correctly. I checked to see what version of the applications I have in the dock on my desktop - I figured it would just import existing data (photos, tunes, etc.) into the newer version and replace it in the dock - +it only did this for iDVD+, of course it wasn't that easy for the others.
I can't find the newer version of iPhoto. My iPhoto in the dock still says version 2. iTunes in my dock is version 7 (7.4.2). iMovie is version 3 (3.0.3). But the new Garageband is there in the dock. And of course, iDVD is the newer version '08.
I am most concerned with iPhoto and making sure all the photos AND their comments import correctly into the newer iPhoto 08. I am nervous about this so I want to make sure I do the process correctly.
I also want to make sure my iTunes information imports correctly to the newer version as well.
    Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Kathy

If you backed up the iPhoto Library Folder then you got everything - photos, albums, comments etc

The Dock is not important. Look in your Applications Folder for iPhoto 08. That's where it should be. The Dock is just a shortcut to that. What version is in your Apps folder?
To upgrade a Library from v2 to iPhoto 08 all you do is open the Library with the newer version.

I have a new 21" iMac to replace a 6-year old iMac 24.  My Time Capsule has the iDVD app saved (?) and I can find it, but I can't figure out how to move it to my new iMac that does not have the app.  How to do this?

You are probably better to install it from ilife disk.

  • Restoring original iWeb from iLife CD installation and the iWeb 1.1 problem

I was thinking of reinstalling the original iWeb from iLife CD and then republish my changes, but didnt want to make matters worst or lose my current iWeb online...
Anyone tried this? or any tips?

You need the following to succesfully downgrade to 1.0.1:
    1) a backup of your iWeb 1.0.1 Domain file from username/Library/Application Support/iWeb before you started using iWeb 1.1
    2) the iWeb 1.0.1 upgrade package
    3) iLife installer disk
To do it you need to:
    1) Delete the receipts first:
    hard-drive/Library/Receipts/iWebApp.pkg
    hard-drive/Library/Receipts/iWeb_101.pkg
    hard-drive/Library/Receipts/iWeb_11.pkg
    2) Delete the iWeb application.
    3) Then reinstall iWeb from your iLife disk. Then update back to 1.0.1.
    4) Put your old 1.0.1 Domain file into the correct place and open iWeb 1.0.1!
I downgraded to 1.0.1 using a backup of my 1.0.1 Domain file successfully with no problems.

  • Uninstalling iPhoto Update from iLife

Does anyone know how to uninstall the iPhoto update from iLife (and even for iMovie too)? I really don't like the new iPhoto as simple things are now more difficult or aren't available anymore. The changes seem more superficial as I haven't found any new tools or processes that help. Don't even get me started on the iMovie problems. Please tell me there is a way to go back.

iPhoto 7 did not make things harder to do, in fact it is virtually identical to the previous version!
I generally agree - But a few things are different and there is a requirement that a user LEARN how to use the new features and those that have changed - for doing that you get a greatly expanded capability so IMHO it is a great trade off - but for a user who is unable or unwilling to learn a few new things it can be difficult - as can ANY new version of ANY new software
