  • Change itunes from PC to Mac with external drive

Been using a Dell with itunes for my music system in mt home. I installed an additional 80G that i've maxed out with tunes. This is in addition to the 30G that came with the system. I have a Mini and just purchased a 500G Western digital external drive. I want to transfer all the music on the 80G (PC/Windows)to the 500G(which is not yet formatted)and set the Mini up as the music system. Could use some pointers on the best way to do this.
    Many thanks

First, make sure that the hard drive is formatted for FAT32; then it can be used by either the PC or the Mac.
Then the easiest way will be to just drag the entire iTunes folder to the external hard drive (the one actually titled "iTunes", containing the iTunes Music folder and the iTunes library files). Then connect the drive to the Mac, hold down the Option key and launch iTunes. You'll get a dialog box offering to either create a new iTunes library or use an existing one. Choose the "use existing" option and select the iTunes folder on the external drive. Then just make sure the drive is connected and mounted on the Mac before you launch iTunes (otherwise it will reset back to the default location on the internal drive).
    Hope this helps.

  • Changing iTunes from Apple to Windows

I use iTunes and duel laptops, a Mac and a PC. My Mac, with my main play lists crashed. I have my iTunes backed up; is there some way to import the Mac .xml to a PC? Also, Can I reformat my iPod to PC?

*Can I reformat my iPod to PC?*
Connect your iPod to the PC and restore it in iTunes for Windows. Restoring will erase and reformat the iPod's hard drive, reload the software with the Windows version and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes

  • Upgrading to Mountain Lion changes iTunes from 10.7 to 11?

This may be a silly question, but I am interested in upgrading to Mountain Lion, but was curious if 1). With the upgrade to Mountain Lion there is an automatic change to iTunes 11 or 2.) do I have the option to keep iTunes 10.7 if I upgrade to Mountain Lion.
If with the upgrade to Mountain Lion, there is an automatic change to iTunes 11 or if there is a rather technical detailed route to avoid changing to iTunes 11, then Ill pass on the upgrade for now, but if I have the option to keep 10.7 or there is a way to keep 10.7 I sure would like to know!
    Thanks!

The latest version in the App Store is 10.8.5 - do you know if it has iTunes 11? I can't find anything that says yes or no for which version of iTunes is in 10.8.5
I'm in the same boat as Eureka0000 -- I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but not if it means having to use iTunes 11.
    Thanks.

I recently purchased an ipod classic, I deleted itunes and redownloaded it in order to start out fresh. When I opened my new itunes a screen pops of with the 3 different ipods and says "Lets get started" after I select register a screen of agreement terms pops up but the only options that appear are cancel save, now Ive saved, repeatedly, I have a feeling that there is something further to the right but there is no scroll therefore I cant get to it. What do I have to do to register my ipod?

No, an external drive will not always be mounted. If the drive goes to sleep, it can unmount, or it may unmount for other reasons. As Chris said, confim that the drive is mounted and active before launching iTunes.

  • Is it really possible to operate iTunes from external hard drive?

The internal hard drive on my Mac Book Pro is full and most of it is music for iTunes. I have been told that it is possible to operate iTunes from a library on an external drive but it hasn't worked for me. I have moved the iTunes folder on to my external hard drive. Then I did two things...First, I opened iTunes while pressing the "alt" key. Then I clicked on "choose library" and directed it to the iTunes folder on the external hard drive. Second, I opened Preferences>Advanced>iTunes Media Folder Location and then clicked on "Change" and directed that to the iTunes folder on my external hard drive. It should work right? Well, it worked the day that I did it but the next day I had "!" beside every song in my library of nearly 10,000 songs. It says that it can't find the location of the song file and asks if I would like to find it. When I show it where the file is it works but it will take me forever to do that with each individual song. Can this really be done successfully?

    One question. What is NAS?
Here is a link http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751 . I did it exactly this way the first time I tried, including consolidating and the organize library part but it made a mess of my iTunes folder. Luckily I had it backed up on another partition of my hard drive using Time Machine. So, I deleted the iTunes folder and started over.
I dragged the iTunes folder over last night to the partition on my hard drive that I want to operate iTunes from. It took about an hour or so to copy the files over but the iTunes folder looks organized the way it should be again. Then I Alt>Clicked on iTunes in the dock and picked create library. Then I directed it to the new iTunes folder. Next I chose preferences>Advanced>Change media folder location and directed that to the new Itunes folder. Then it asked me if I would like iTunes to organize the folder(or something to that effect). I can't remember exactly but I chose "No" or "Cancel" this time, I didn't the first time. It has been working ever since but I am waiting for something to go wrong. Because, it worked last time for a day and then stopped.

  • I had to change my hard drive, now i'v tried to reinstall itunes, it is saying i have to restore my ipod touch to factory settings, will i loose all my films by doing this, as now my ipod wont work anyway unless i restore ?

I had to change my hard drive, now i'v tried to reinstall itunes it says i have to restore my iopd touch to factory settings and will loose my files. I have a few films on there and they show up on my purchases. If i restore, will i be able to get my films back ? as at the moment my ipod wont work now untill i restore anyway.

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your ipod. Only if you back up your device manually before syncing, you can restore from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Here's how to:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your ipod to your computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your ipod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your device for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the ipod for the first time.

  • HT1727 how do I transfer my iTunes from an external hard drive to a different computer?

How do I transfer my iTunes from an external hard drive to a pc?

If you don't have all of your music files within the iTunes Music folder structure, simply moving all of your music to a new location will not result in your iTunes library automatically updating the file paths to all of your songs appropriately. If you have a few other locations in which you store your music, you can take the ExportImport script turingtest2 wrote, make the modifications below, export the results, paste them into Microsoft Word or Excel, do a Find and Replace with the correct file location, and then import the new locations. To use the script, follow turingtest2's instructions on this thread as posted on Dec 19, 2012 6:28 AM.
Note that the modifications, while they worked for me, show my lack of experience with VB as the progress bar will no longer work. Definitely be sure to back up your iTunes library file before executing the script with the below modifications, but doing this for 3500 items didn't even take 2 minutes for the script to run.
    Line 89 was:        Prog=True
    Line 89 is now:     Prog=False
    * I had to do this because otherwise the progress bar was erroring out. So, i just turned it off.
    Lines 164-165 were:
'File.WriteLine "<#>" & .Location           ' Not so useful if working with missing tracks
    'File.WriteLine "<Album>" & .Album
Lines 164-165 are now three lines (the middle one is the only uncommented line):
'File.WriteLine "<#>" & .Location           ' Not so useful if working with missing tracks
    File.WriteLine "<Location>" & .Location
    'File.WriteLine "<Album>" & .Album
Finally, insert this whole block around line 270 so that it looks similar to the others:
            Case "<location>"
If T.Location<>Value Then                ' Don't update if value won't change
                T.Location=Value
                U=U+1
                Trace T,"Updated Location"
              Else
                V=V+1
              End If
'If Trace Then MsgBox "Updated Location"
Note that I had to comment the very last line as well or else the program errored out. You won't be able to trace the results either.
Just thought I'd share this in case anyone else needed something like this.

  • ITunes from an External hard drive

I just moved all of my iTunes music files to a La Cie mini hard drive. I set my iTunes preference to find the files on that drive. When I go to play a song in the library, it tells me it has to find the file. Once I manually locate it, it plays. How can I set this up so it finds the files automatically? I have already deleted the music files from my PowerBook. The files are only on the external drive at this point. Help. Thank you.

    KLH1 hello,
You can't set iTunes preferences to find files... iTunes gets that information when the songs are 1st added to the library ... if iTunes moves them it is okay but if you move them you will have to tell iTunes where you put them and then iTunes will update the Library file where the info is stored...
You can sort it out OK... set the iTunes pref.> advanced > general tab NOT to copy files when adding to library and DO keep iTunes Music folder organized... ok any changes.
From file menu select 'add to library' and choose the folder, with the data files inside, on the Ext HD ... iTunes will do the rest...
    take care KLH1 ... TP

  • Transferring itunes from one computer to another - D drive to C drive

Is there an easy way to change the drive location in iTunes for stored music and videos?  I am getting a new computer, and my current data resides on a "D:" drive.  The new computer will just have a single "C:" drive partition.  I don't want iTunes to reorganize my files from their current folders.  The only thing I want to change is the drive letter designation.  Thanks!
