Change KDE Icon theme from XFCE

I just installed okular and some other KDE applications since the GNOME3 ones currently look pretty bad in my XFCE desktop. The GTK/QT themes are easy to get to match, but  there's a KDE port of my icon theme, and I don't know how to change to it. Do I have to install KDE's control center / system settings program and if so what package is it part of or is there just some file I can hand edit?
Thanks.

Well, so far I figured out that the KDE control center is part of the kdebase-workspace package which brought in about 85MB of dependencies and other stuff. So I'd still prefer to find a textual solution, but when I tried diffing my .kde4 folder before and after, I got different results different times, so I'm still working on that. Will post if I figure anything out and perhaps whip upsome bash script to change it.

  • [KDE] Icon theme in some GTK+ apps is stuck to Oxygen

I've been trying to figure out what my problem is for a few days now... For some reason, when I try to change the icon theme to anything besides Oxygen for GTK apps when I'm using the oxygen-gtk theme, it doesn't change. But if I switch to a theme such as Raleigh, it uses my icon theme.
The icon theme I am trying to set is KFaenza. I also tried Faenza-Cupertino, using Faenza as a fallback, but that didn't work either.
I saw this topic, which is almost my exact issue. This didn't help either.
I tried multiple tweaks to my .gtkrc-2.0, such as commenting out the theme name, the first "include" (that sets my theme to oxygen-gtk), and commenting out the fallback icon theme line. None of these work.
I also tried putting the icon themes in /usr/share/icons, which didn't help.
I am using the System Settings module to set my GTK+ theme. I have an up-to-date system (just reinstalled a couple of days ago).
Currently I am using an unmodified gtkrc created by System Settings.
Hopefully all this info helps, and thanks in advance for any answers!
UPDATE: I just installed gconf-editor to see if I could fix anything in there. It just turns out that gconf-editor is obeying my settings and this is a problem with Chromium and not GTK.
UPDATE #2: I also installed Firefox and it is also not obeying my settings.

Copy the icon theme folder to /usr/share/icons
(ex. if your icon theme folder's name is Oxygen-Refit, it should be at /usr/share/icons/Oxygen-Refit)
Then edit ~/.gtkrc-2.0-kde and add the line baghera suggested. It works here.
Note that you need to do this to .gtkrc-2.0 (yes, thats without -kde) too if you don't use gtk-qt-engine to change gtk themes.
Also note that every time you change the gtk theme (either via systemsettings or via 3rd party utility) this line is autoremoved from the corresponding file(s).
Finally, make sure you close the gtk app you want the change to be shown and reopen it. All newly opened gtk apps should show the change.

  • Keep customized icon after changing gnome icon themes

Is that possible under current gnome2.6? Thanks in advance.

Oh, thanks, but I think you mean to customize icon themes. I am sorry I don't explain very clearly, I mean when I choose a picture as my folder's looking, say, a post for my movie stored folder- I do like the feature - but if I changed my icon theme in the theme section, the customized looking of my folder is gone, so can I keep it not changed? I can change my desktop icon and keep it no matter how I changed my icon theme, but in nautilus I can't do so. Is there any way to do so? Thanks.

  • [SOLVED] change icons in thunar (XFCE)

    Hello all,
Me again.  Is there a way to change the icon colors in Thunar?  I copied the gnome-wine, gnome-wise, etc. from my Xubuntu test box and copied them to /usr/share/icons.  I can see they show up under System Settings, Appearance/Icons.  I can even select them, but only the icons on the desktop change colors (call me crazy, but I like the green folder icons).  However, the icons in thunar are still the grayish brown standard icons.
Is there a way to have the thunar icons use the XFCE system icons?

in xfce4 (4.8.0.3, the version I am using in ubuntu):
You can do this to chang the icons in thunar and through the xfce desktop
    1) Click the main menu (Xfce menu at the bottom-left of the screen)
    2) Click Settings -> Appearance
    On Appearance dialog:
    1) Click Icons tab (or press alt+i)
    2) if you have icon themes installed you can selec them (such as Tango)
-- this will change iconds for the entire desktop:
    Thunar, Xfce menu, etc
EDIT: I now realize that this was about changing icon colors and the above was already noted in the first post
.. any way it helped me change my icon theme to Tango...thanks

  • Xfce4 Does Not change icon theme

    Hi arch community,
I have installed xfce4, Liking it. But when I wanted to change the icons, I wanted to  use the Cheser icon theme, so I followed the instuctions here:
    http://docs.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-settings/appearance
    Under the icon section.
I could not change the icon theme, but I could change everything else such as fonts and gtk theme.
    Here's what I have tried:
    -Deleting ~/.config directory
    -Log out, then back in.
-Changing the permissions of ~/.icons to username
    -Rebooted
    EDIT:
This was somehow solved by a hard reboot, because the logon manager failed to work,I think the cleanup removed/corruped one of the files, then changed my icons!
Call me crazy, but that's how I did it.

I am having the exact same problem. It is even worse because it has happened to me in class before.
The other day, after coming to class I opened up my MBP from sleep intending to work on some things for class. As a general practice I hit the mute key as soon as I open the Mac. This always worked well with my Powerbook. However the system did not mute and the connection noises from iChat played out. This upset the teacher who glared at me for the rest of the class.
This is not an isolated incident either. I have had the tool bar and the translucent icon disagree a number of times.
I have found that if I hit the mute key twice it will generally correct the problem. But it is annoying. I hope someone at Apple is listening (in more than one way it would seem)

  • [KDE] I can't change the icons of gtk-apps

    Hi,
I'm able to change the theme of the gtk apps under KDE just fine. What I don't get to work is to change the icon theme, too. The gtk apps always use the default one.
    Her's what I have in my .gtkrc-2.0
    gtk-icon-theme-name="FaenzaCupertino"
    gtk-theme-name="oxygen-gtk"
    Any ideas?

I didn't read that the original Faenza Icon theme is needed, too. Now the next problem is that in Thunderbird the folders are brown and don't use the blue look.
You are on to something here. The key is what GTK engine you are using: oxygen-gtk. That engine has a special hack to apply KDE icons to GTK applications. What it does is actually set gtk-theme-name on the fly, your gtkrc file doesn't matter.
And here is the bug; KDE uses icons from ~/.kde4/share/icons but where does GTK try to find your theme? In ~/.icons. The solution is to symlink your icon theme from ~/.kde4/share/icons to ~/.icons.

  • Icon-theme changes problem[SOLVED]

I have murrine-engine, aurora-engine installed. I have installed gtk-engine-equinox and are trying to use equinox-evolution theme with Faenza icon-theme. I had a nice desktop for a couple of days. Yesterday it reverted back to the original icon-theme. Now I cannot change the icon-theme at all. I don't get it. Why is it OK one day but not the next? I have the themes in /usr/share/themes and ~/.themes. Same with icons. Same icons in both directorys. I'm running x86_64 and gnome.
OK. Had to remove all other icon-themes from ~/.themes. Why is it so?

I know how to change themes using the method you described; however, the icon theme that is displayed is tango. I clearly chose tamiga, and the rox file in ~/.config points to the tamiga icon theme. So my question is why isn't the tamiga theme being used? Does it have something to with the inherits line in the icon cofig file? Is there some other problem? Some icon themes display correctly, but not others.
    Thanks for trying!

  • [SOLVED] Setting Qt icon theme without KDE.

Where can I set the icon theme for QT[5] without using KDE? Is there some manual [deskop agnostic] way. E.g. Trolltech.conf, but ,if yes, what is the key?
The wiki states that "There is no way of setting the icon theme from QtConfig, but since Qt follows the Freedesktop.org Icon Specification, any theme set for X is picked up by Qt."
But how can I set the theme set for X?

  • Changing Gnome Icons...

Seems a daft question but in Appearance there is no option to change icons ?
Or have I gone completely mad lol
    MrG

    Greetings,
I have another question. How to change GTK theme icons, using config files. I have changed my theme, and font, using ~/.gtkrc-2.0 and ~/.gtkrc.mine files, but can I change icons as well somehow. I am using fluxbox, and I do now want to instal XFCE in order to use xfce-mcs-manager for changing my icon theme.
    Thank you.

  • Awesome menu icon themes

I've just started playing around with awesome (normally use gnome). Is there anyway of setting an icon theme for the menus and things?
The standard themes manually set the icons in theme.lua .
    theme.awesome_icon = "~/muh_icon.png"
    beautiful.awesome_icon
    In theme.lua there's a field theme.icon_theme which doesn't seem to do anything?

It's somewhat complicated. Where do you want you change the icon theme?
If you want to change the application icons that appear in the task bar, you must use lxappearance.
If you want to change the applications icons in the menu bar (the one that functions like dmenu), you must set the variable theme.icon_theme=Your_icon_theme in your theme.lua, like you said in your post. But there are several things to consider:
    - The folder that contains the icon theme must be in the following format:
    /... /icons/Icon_theme/16x16/actions, animations,apps,...
    /22x22/
    /64x64/
    etc
Not every theme follows that format. For example, faenza-icon-theme and faience-icon-theme from the official repositories have the directories with the categories first (apps, emblems, etc) and then the directories with the different sizes, so the script that loads the icons doesn't work.
-The icon theme must consist only of .png images. Many icon themes have images in .svg, and apparently Awesome can't load them. numix-icon-theme-git and faba-icon-theme-git from the AUR consist of .svg images, so they won't work.
moka-icon-theme-git from the AUR has .png icons and also has them stored in the correct directory format. Maybe you should try it.
If you want to use a theme with .svg icons, you can convert them to .png with imagemagick. I use the following bash script:
    #!/bin/bash
    for directorio in */
    do
    echo $directorio
    for imagen in $directorio/*
    do
    echo $imagen
    convert -background transparent $imagen $directorio/`basename $imagen .svg`.png
    done
    rm $directorio/*.svg
    done
    notify-send "Finish" "Icon conversion finished."
You must run it inside of every size folder (64x64, 128x128, etc), be sure to make a backup of the original icon theme.
For example, I converted numix-circle-icon-theme-git with that script and now my menubar looks like this:
If you want to change the application icons in the menu that appears when you click on the awesome icon or right click on the desktop, install archlinux-xdg-menu from the official repositories. After that copy /usr/bin/xdg_menu to your home directory and edit it like this:
    91 foreach my $dir (@xdg_data_dirs)
    92 {
    93 my $theme = "your_icon_theme";
    94 my $size;
Then, execute it like it's mentioned in the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xdg-menu, but using the script in your home folder for --root-menu. The icons must be stored in the directory format mentioned above.
Now, the app menu looks like this:
I hope these instructions are useful. Maybe it's a good idea to include them in the wiki.

    My knowledge is:
all is compatible, BUT the xdg-user-dirs show the fallback icons (same isue w tango-icons)
if you NOT make you "well know Directories" trow xdg-user-dirs-update, you no have problem (you can use gnome2 icons)

  • XFCE icon theme confusion

I have a weird problem with my icons and XFCE. Some time ago my gedit icon in the taskbar had gone missing. After a while, I decided to erase my XFCE config and create a new and the icon was properly shown again. But during the time I configurated XFCE, it was again as a missing icon in the xfce taskbar. In the application menu the icon is shown correctly.
Furthermore, Midori shows at the position of the forward button the icon of rhythmbox's next button, but not always, just sometimes, depending on it's mood [Update: No, not depending on it's mood but if it's a shadowed or active button].
I guess my icon theme is somehow corrupted, but removing and reinstalling did not work (using 'gnome'). I also updated my icon cache without any change. If I change to another icon theme, the problem also remains.
    Any suggestions?
