Change layout of a photo in Aperture slideshow

Hi all,
Yesterday I upgraded to Mountain Lion so I could buy Aperture (3.3.2) for the sole purpose of having more control over creating photo slideshows.
In iPhoto 11, I was creating nice slideshows using themes, but if I made any adjustments, such as deleting a photo, iPhoto would not adjust the frames. So portrait photos would go in landscape frames and vice-versa. I was hoping to be able to control the frames better and make adjustments in Aperture.
This seems like not too much to ask for a program like Aperture to me. Am I missing something? Is it really too much to ask to select which frame I want to put pictures into? Or at least trash a specific frame that doesn't fit the pictures well and receive another?
What do other people do to get around this problem?

In general the answer is no.
Aperture isn't a photo editor like The Gimp or PS. So if you're looking to do 'green screen' type of mods, were you isolate the foreground and change the background then no you can't.

  • Calendar theme editing?  Changing layout of Calendar photo's.

I want to rearrange photos on calendar in a slightly rotated layout. That is not perfectly vertical or horizontal. I want to lay them on the calendar in MY arragnement rather than the canned layouts from Apple.
Is there anyway to rotate photos just a little off horizontal/vertical?
Is there a way to create MY own Calendar theme?
Are there other Calendar themes available?

    MacFire21:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What theme are you using and which layout?
The answer to all of your questions is no. BUT, if you choose a one photo/page layout you can create a collage of the photos you want in the location you want and save as a 4:3 ratio image file an use that. That would take a 3rd party editor however. There is a free one, Seashore, that can do the job. If you plan on doing a lot of advanced editing I recommend Photoshop Elements. It's, IMO, the best consumer editor out there. Here's an example so some of the advanced editing you can do with it.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Dooes anyone know how to change the timing of photos in a slideshow on ATV 2nd or 3rd generation.

    Hi.Help please.
I'm new to ATV and can see no way to slow down the speed of sldeshows of photos brought over from "my Pictures" folders on my PC. (XP pro with SP3 and latest iTunes)

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can adjust the time of each slide in the slideshow settings, which you'll find above the thumbnails of the slides when you open the photo album on the Apple TV.
Note, not all of the slideshow options have time settings.

  • How do I change the order of photos for a slideshow?

Not sure how to do this. It's not as intuitive as I had hoped.

When the slideshow is selected you can drag/drop the thumbnails at the top of window into any order.

  • How change positions of photos in a slideshow?

How do I change the positions of photos in a slideshow?

Are you saying you can't change the order of the slides in this tray in the slideshow mode?
One should be able to drag and drop photos into any position you want. If you can't then try this:   make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • Can I change the order of photos in Events

I am in the process of scanning my old film photos so that I can put them into iPhoto. As I have no scanner I take them to Wal Mart and scan them onto a CD then import them into iPhoto at home. Because the CD holds the photos from a number of events I then distribute them to a number of different Event folders.
Once I get all the photos into their correct Event folders I would like to rearrange their order. Using drag and drop, or cut and paste, simply leaves the photo in it's original location. If I use the 'Moving photos from one event to another' feature the moved photos will still go into the new Event folder in the same order as they were in the originating folder, regardless of what order I drag or paste them.
The help menu has topics on how to change the order of photos in a slideshow, book or calender, but not an event. I could arrange the photos beforehand so that they are scanned in the order in which I want them to appear in Events, but with 500+ photos in completely random order it will be fairly time consuming. It also will not help with the disc of photos I have already made.
So, to finally get to my question, does anybody know if there is a way to rearrange the order of photos within an Event folder?
    Rgds

Events are strictly time based. If you put those photos in an album and in the order you want, you can set their date and time by using the PHotos->Batch Change->Date and set the date and time you want with the checkbox to add the time differential you'd like between photos. That will reorder them in the Event also.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

How can I create a slideshow that depicts only a version of a photo rather than the original?   Since the original and new versions are saved together, the aperture slideshow often choices the original rather than the desired version to display.

There are two things we use the name "Slideshow" for in Aperture:  a Slideshow Album, used for making Slideshows, and the Slideshow that is made.  (Imho, it is a design mistake to not call the containers used to create Slideshows, Books, etc., "Albums".)
The Slideshow will use the Album Pick from any Stack.  A good way to use Aperture is to promote the Image you want to regularly use (such as, for example, a Version with adjustments) to the top of the Stack.  This makes it the Stack Pick, and will be the default Album Pick.  If you haven't done that, you can still change the Album Pick for any Stack in a Slideshow Album.  Expand your Stack(s), select the Image in each Stack that you want to be the Album Pick (and thus shown in the Slideshow), and "Stacks➞Set Album Pick".  (Note the keyboard shortcut; there is also a Toolbar icon for this.)  The change is immediate.  The Slideshow will always show the Album Pick (or, if there is not one, the Stack Pick) for every Stack in your Slideshow Album.

  • Problem adding Photos, changing layout

I'm trying to create a Book and when I change layout or want to change the picture, the page goes blank and can't add/change photos or layout?

Since the new library worked OK indicates that your orignal library is damaged to the point that it's not repairable. We've tried all of the fixes we know about.
This may be your next step which would mean recreating the book from scratch:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Photos and layouts change size when adding photos in book layout

I am using the Classic layout to create books.
Sometimes, when I move a photo down into the layout, unpredictable things happen. For example, when I drag a photo down onto the page layout, sometimes the photo will change sizes, and sometimes the layout will move around (esp. with 3 or 4 images on a page). On a page with a single image, sometimes the photo comes in large, and sometimes it shrinks. On a 3 photo per page layout, sometimes the layout starts with 3 photo boxes in a row. I can add one or two, and then I add another (could be the 1st, 2nd or 3rd - it's the image file that I think triggers the change) and all the boxes scramble and instead of a row of 3 equal-sized boxes, now I have a page with 1 big and 2 small boxes. Totally unpredictable!
Is there any way to control this?
All the photo files I'm starting with are high resolution tiffs, around 8 inches square (most are squares, not 4x6 snapshots) at 300 dpi.
I have had this issue on 3 computers (and probably 2 different versions of iPhoto): a 2-year-old G5, and two brand new iMacs.
Any help or advice is welcome. Thanks.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If you Control-click on the square photo in a book frame you can select the "Fit photo to frame size" option and the entire image will be contained in the frame. there will be some white space on the short side.

trying to make an ibook and have 800 photos, want format of 8 photos/page, but default is not that- "create" the initial book from iphoto "album" it loads less than 800 pics and then when i change layout i have blanks.
if i clear the book so that it is all blanks and then try to load in the pictures i have it loses the chronology of the pictures that i had established in the album.
is there a way to import photos into an ibook template and keep the original order of the photos without having to do them one at a time?
also, is there a way to insert a photo rather than just dragging it? i have tried the cut and paste funciton but it doesn't seem to work, the target site doesn't seem to register with iphoto.
    many thanks for your help.

Photos are added to book in chronological order.  So if you want to add them to a book in the order you have placed them manually in an album do the following:
1 - select all the photos in the album.
2 - use the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Date menu option as shown here. Select any date and add 1 minute between photos.
3 - select just one photo from the album and create a book from it.
4 - in the book click on the Options button ➙ Book Settings button and make sure the checkbox for Auto-layout pages is unchecked.
5 - drag the album with your book photos onto the book icon and they will be imported into the Photos tray of the book in your pre-determined order but not into the pages themselves.

  • How do I change 'original' photos to 'referenced' photos in Aperture?

New to Aperture, I mistakenly imported photos into Aperture believing they were 'referenced', and I applied a lot of metadata.
Then I discovered they were 'original', not 'referenced'.
Is there an easy way to switch them to 'referenced', and not lose my metadata?
I need to keep the no. of photos on my laptop to a minimum, therefore I cannot store all my images in Aperture. (I probably should have gone with light room, since I hear it does this natively.)
    Thank you,
    Gina S

When you import a digicam file into the Aperture Library, you tell Aperture where to store it.  If it is stored inside your Aperture Library package, it is referred to as "Managed".  If it is stored outside your Aperture Library package, it is referred to as "Referenced".  Aperture makes it easy to store your imported files on whichever directly-mounted storage device you want, and also easy to change the storage location at any time.
Once they are imported, your digicam files are called "Originals" in Aperture-speak.  (In the manual, they also use the out-dated term "Master".)
For a quick review of the parts of Aperture, look here.  I think you'll find it helpful.
Metadata is Image-specific.  It remains with the Image, regardless of where you tell Aperture to store each Image's Original.
Lastly, to save space on your system drive, you might consider, as an alternative to referencing some (or all) of your Originals to an external drive, moving your Library to an external drive and leaving all your Originals managed.  I have run Libraries off external drives for years.
    Aperture program: on system drive
Your Library: either on system drive or on (fast) external drive
Your Originals: either in your Library (managed) or elsewhere (referenced), almost always on external drive.

  • Changing Sync photos from: Aperture to iPhoto on iTunes

I marked my previous question as solved by mistake.
I still have a problem in iTunes to sync my photos to my iPhone 6. It shows only available "Copy photos from: Aperture".
I would like to switch this back iPhoto and cannot find the way.
    Thank you.

Well, that was an interesting idea, Colin, but it didn't work. I opened iTunes, and then dragged the Aperture repository into it. It seemed to acknowledge it (when I dragged it onto iTunes, the "dragging" icon wasn't x'ed out), but it didn't add anything to the library.
If you try to do an "Add to Library" from iTunes, and then navigate to the Aperture repository, the repository folder is grayed out. It can't be selected. Same for a backup Vault created from Aperture.
Thanks for the suggestion, though. It's always worth experimenting. (Assuming everything is backed up. )

  • Import Aperture slideshow into iPad as SLIDES

I prepared a slideshow using Aperture, individually introducing texts and modifying slide layout. 550 slides, this was a lot of work.
    Then I bought an iPad.
From what I found until now, the only solution is Aperture > iPhoto > (movie) > iPad
I don't care for a movie, I want to keep my slideshow, its quality and the ability to browse my own speed.
Using the album I prepared before is not the solution, as I loose the additional information for each slide.
    QUESTION 1
CAN I INDIVIDUALLY EXPORT PICTURES AND ADDITIONAL LAYOUT PREPARED FOR AN APERTURE SLIDESHOW AS JPEG FILES ?
I moved to Photoshop to redo the editing job, then import into Aperture.
Too bad, the order of pictures is lost when exporting to iPad.
And I did not find any solution for modifying orders of pictures on iPad.
iPhoto for iPad says it would do it (drag and drop), but I did not find how yet...
Should I individually drag pictures into an Album on iPad ?
    QUESTION 2
HOW TO MODIFY ORDERS OF PICTURES IN AN IPAD ALBUM ?
There should be solutions for both. Hopefully a simple one that I did not find yet.
    Can anyone help ?

    Hi Constance,
You would first need to export the slideshow from iPhoto as a Quicktime movie.
Then you can view it on your iPad.
    Here's how:

iPhoto '11: View photos or slideshows on iPod, iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV

  • Use photos from Aperture 3 as Wallpapers problem

I chose photos from Aperture projects as desktop wallpaper by right-clicking on desktop>change desktop background. But the photos all shrank to maybe half size on desktop. I used to store my wallpapers in iphoto, so I can process them a lit bit when I want to. I am planning on migrating from iphoto to aperture 3, and I know aperture 3 can do a much better job in processing. But unable to display wallpapers in right size really bothers me. Anybody can help with this? Thanks in advance.

You might find reading [this article|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3781|Aperture 3: How to optimize Aperture for the best looking slideshow] useful in expanding on what PilotGuy74 has said. Although it's written about slideshows, what they explain there applies to your wallpapers situation too.
I have already missed the simplicity of iphoto. Maybe aperture is just too pro to me.
Don't be put off. Aperture is a very complex powerful application - you can't expect to learn how to use it all, all at once. Take it a bit at a time. Learn a little as you go and you'll find that, over time, you will develop your skills with it.

  • Multiple copies of one photo in Aperture

    Hi,
I have just bought Aperture, and I'm dying to get started. However, a very basic thing annoys me quite a lot. I would like to make an Album with photos I can perform experiments on, but no matter what I do, the changes also apply to the "originals" in the Event from which they were taken.
Isn't there an easy way to have multiple copies of the same photo in Aperture? I guess the solution must be simple, but I just can't figure it out.
    Thanks,
    Michael Knudsen

    Michael,
Either use the Command to Duplicate Version, or New Version from Master depending upon whether your experiment needs to start with the latest edited version, or from the scratch position of the Master. Then you can either Remove the original version from an Album if already there, or move the new version it to a new Album as desired.
