Change link to Word document
Hi,
I have a Word document inked into my project. Now I need to create a second chm from the same project. I need to reuse a lot of topics from the linked Word document. But because of the new requirements I need to change some tiopic titles etc.
I was hoping I could 'unlink' the Word document and use the topics as if they were imported instead of linked. That would give me more options to change topics as required to make them usable for both chm files.
Is this possible?
Thanks
Hi there
You should be able to make copies of the resulting HTML pages, then import the copies into a new project and change as you see fit. Wouldn't that work?
Cheers... Rick

External Link to Word document question
Hello, fellow RoboHelpers!
I have a quick question that I am hoping someone can answer
for me. :-)
I am using RoboHelp X5 and use Microsoft HTML Help (.CHM) as
my file output. I would like to link a Word document to one of my
topics, so when a user clicks the link, they will be prompted to
open/save the Word document.
The following are the steps I use to do this:
1) I type the text that I want the to use for the hyperlink,
highlight it, and select the Hyperlink tool (or press CTRL+K).
2) In the Hyperlink dialog box, I select "File" from the
"Link To:" section and select my Word document.
3) I select "Yes" to add the Word document to my project
folder.
4) In the Hyperlink diaglog box, I select OK, and the link
has been created.
5) I generate my Help project and test the link.
6) When I click the hyperlink, I receive a "File Download -
Security Warning" box asking me if I want to Open or Save the Word
document.
Problem #1 -- it appears that I can save the Word document by
clicking "Save" without any problems, but clicking "Open" does not
open the Word document in Microsoft Word. Why?
Problem #2 -- The warning box displays three criteria: the
file name, what type of file it is, and "From". I have issues with
the "From" line. While the .CHM file is attempting to call the Word
document from within the .CHM file, which is what I expected it to
do ... the path is, well, ugly looking :-P
mk:@MSITStore:C:\Program%20Files\RoboHelp%20Office\
RoboHTML\HTMLMicrosoftHTML\VRHelp.chm::/ICBA.doc
Is there any way that I can clean up this path? If I could at
least get rid of that mk:@MSITStore, that would be a good start.
If anyone has some suggestions, I am all for it!
Thank you very much,
--Jessicaquote:

that just is part of the path if the Word document is embedded in
the help file.
Ahh, I am sorry to hear that that is the case. Thanks for the
information!

you adding the Word document as a baggage file? I don't know if
RHX5 does this automatically with your steps as I use an older
version.
John
Yes, the Word document is added as a baggage file. If I click
"Open", the Security Warning box disappears and nothing happens
(unfortunately).
In the Hyperlink properties, I realized that I had the link
opening in the "same window", so I changed it to display in a "New
Window". Now, when I generate/click the link, the Word document
tries to open in Internet Explorer (path and all). I get the same
message box as before asking me if I want to Open or Save the
document. Still, clicking "Open" will not open the Word document in
Microsoft Word. When I press Open, the box simply disappears and
the path remains in the Internet Explorer address bar. If I select
the path in the message bar and press Enter to bring up the
Open/Save prompt again, I can save the document ... but I cannot
Open it.
A thought just occurred to me while I was typing this: Would
the fact that I am using Microsoft Word 2007 have anything to do
with why the file will not open? I remember hearing that Office
2007 is not compatible with RoboHelpX5, so perhaps that is why the
document is not opening. Still, RoboHelpX5 doesn't seem to have a
problem saving the file to your harddrive regardless of the
filetype, and the Word document I am working with is a .doc file
anyway, compatible with Word 97-2003, not a .docx.

Opening a Word document
From time to time people ask how to open a Word document from
the help.
COMPILED CHM HELP - Rick advises that you can use an HTML
Help Shortcut control to accomplish the goal.
You simply specify the file name where you would normally
specify the application.
I tried to create a HTML Help shortcut by doing the
following:
1. I click the Insert Navigation Control button, then HTML
Help Controls > Shortcut
2. In the Button options box, I enter a text description for
the button and click Next.
3. In the Shortcut Selection, the first prompt says, "Program
to run when shortcut is activated." I search for my Word document
from within my Project Folder, select it, and press Next.
4. I leave the Font options the way they are.
5. I click Finish, and the button is created.
When I generate the project and test the button, nothing
happens when I click it. If I do specify the application (ex.
WINWORD.EXE), Word
does open when I click the button. How can I get it to call
a specific Word document?
Thanks for your time, guys!

How can I change a Microsoft Word document file into a picture file?
How can I change a Microsoft Word document file into a picture or jpeg file? I am wanting to make the image I created my background on my macbook pro.
After I had the document image the way I wanted it, I saved it as a web page and went from there. Below are the steps starting after I did the "save as" option in Word:
1) Select "Save As Web Page". I changed the location from documents to pictures when the window came up to save it as a web page.
2) Go to "Finder" on you main screen, or if it's on your main toolbar at the bottom.
3) Click on the "Pictures" tab and find the file you just re-saved as a web page. (I included "web page" or something similar in the new title so I could easily find the correct file I was looking for)
4) Open the correct file and then "right click" on the actual image. (Use 2 fingers to do so on a Mac)
5) Select 'Use Image As Desktop Picture", and voilà! The personally created image, or whatever it is that you wanted, is now your background.
**One problem I encountered while doing this is that the image would show up like it was right-aligned in relation to the whole screen. The only way I could figure how to fix this was to go back to the very original document in Word, (the one before it was saved as a web page), and move everything over to the left.
I hope this helps someone else who was as frustrated as I was with something that I thought would have been very simple to do! If you have any tips or suggestions of your own, please feel free to share. : ) -

Hi tinam74565130,
That does sound frustrating! It sounds as though the filename associations have become confused on your computer. You should be able to reset that easily. Here are some instructions:

Links in Word Documents to SharePoint documents
Our SharePoint site contains Word documents with links to other documents stored in SharePoint.
When the users open a Word document stored in SharePoint, and then create a link, the users select the files in the "Current Folder" which is the SharePoint Network Drive. In this case the path is
\\rcssportal.co.riverside.ca.us\DavWWWRoot\sites\teammate\
When users then open the Word document, and select a link, they receive a "Cannot open the specified file" pop up.
If users do one of the following though, after being authenticated all the links will start working:
1. In the document library, select "Open with Explorer"
2. Map a Network Drive to
\\rcssportal.co.riverside.ca.us\DavWWWRoot\sites\teammate\Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to link in Word Documents to SharePoint documents.
I try to reproduce the issue, however, I can open the Linked Word Document in the SharePoint Network Drive.
Please make sure you create Network Drive correctly. For more information, you can refer to:
Using SharePoint Document Library as a Network Drive
If the issues still exist, I recommend to select "Open with Explorer" to open the document.

Linda Li

Hi Guys,
Apologies if this is really stupid question, but I'm having problems I can't sort out. I am trying to educate project managers who report in MS Word and store data in MS Excel - because they like colours and can manipulate simple Excel features.
My intermediate solution was to interrogate the Excel data in Crystal Reports ver 10 (or BusinessObjects Enterprise XI) and link the basic report, a Word document (as the report header). The idea being that project managers could update the Word document and continue to use Excel - and Crystal would tidily put the two together.
However - no probs with Excel data but if I link the Word document into the header (or any other report section) I get ony the first table of the document! The Word document is a series of tables one of which spans several pages, with the tables formatted to allow rows to split over a page break. I can link the individual tables - but the version produced always stops at a page break.
All ideas very gratefully received - either to solve my problem or suggest a better way of working completely.
BarrieOnly the 1st page will be displayed. This is by design. For possible work-arounds see the following KBases:

Mac OS X changes windows share's links in word document
My client is having a problem with MacBook Air and samba files that are hyperlinked to MS Office Word document.
The problem is that if the client opens the document in Mac Office Word and the document has hyperlinks in it made in Windows then Mac Office changes the links and adds Volumes to the link. So once the client saves it and the file is opened in Windows office again the links do not work for anyone.
I tried to use the program called WinShortCutter but it did not work in my MacBook Pro or my clients Air.
Seems like the Mac Office does not support plugins.
The links are copied from server. One example: \\server\folder\folder2\file.xls
Mac Office changes those links to \\server\folder\volumes\folder2\file.xls
So my question: Is there a way I could change Mac Office so it does not add volumes in the hyperlinks.Hi Kobus Bensch,
I'm sorry I am not able to help with your questions about sharing from your Mac to the server but wanted to suggest that you post back the exact Mac OS version you are using. Your specs below your post suggest 10.0.x which was barely a beta version of Mac OS X. This will surely help those who are seeing your topic and trying to help.
To find the version you can simply click on the blue Apple in your top menu bar and select About This Mac.

Link to Word Document (Captivate 2)
Hi
I want to be able at the end of a project for the users to
click a button and have a word document appear which they can
complete and then print.
I need it to be in a new window as I need them to be able to
go back to the project whenever they want. I have placed the
document in the same folder as where the project has been published
I have tried the URL/Link on a click button but unless i put
an absolute path it doesn't work. I don't want to put in an
absolute path as this would mean having to change it for everywhere
different I publish it.
I have tried doing a relative path but that hasn't worked
either. I am publishing via HTML for the projects i need this for
but i will also have to publish it to a CD eventually.
I don't know much about javascript but I thought that might
be the way to go, but i just don't understand what i actually have
to do and where the JS needs to be placed.
At the moment the project is located on my H:\Inductions and
the document is called
HRI-001-06 Adelaide Office Induction Questionnaire
I have tried doing a quiz in captivate but as i only have
Captivate 2, that wasn't too successful because if they got it
wrong they had to do the whole thing again and they couldn't go
back to the project
My relative path was just the document name as above - was
that correct? and then i clicked "new"
Any help anyone can give me would be great.
I have searched the forums but have not had any luck finding
answers.Hi Michelle
The generic "F" message typically indicates that the file you
are linking to cannot be found. Perhaps it was listed using an
absolute address instead of a relative address.
An absolute address specifies the file you are linking to is
expected to be found in a specific location. Perhaps
C:\SomeFolder\SomeFile.DOC. A relative address simply expects the
file to be in a relative folder. Often, this may mean the same
folder. So you specify SomeFile.DOC and simply ensure the file you
are linking to is in the same folder as the Captivate linking to
it.

Link to Word document doesn't refresh when running from Infoview
I have a report that contains an OLE Object link to a Word Document. If I modify the document and schedule the report through Infoview, it doesn't pick up the change. If I refresh the report through Crystal Reports it does pick up the changes. Any suggestions on how I can get the Infoview scheduled report to pick up the changes?
Thanks,
TonyHello Tony and Co-Experts,
I am facing exactly the problem Tony had:
- Embedded a Word document as linked OLE object into a crystal report and stored it to Enterprise repository.
- When opening the report with CR Developer from my workstation, changes in the .doc file are reflected, the report is updated
- However when displaying and refreshing the report on the BO Server via InfoView changes aren't reflected.
The OLE link is set to update automatically (under menu edit -> links)
I tried to store the report to the enterprise repository with and without data. Yet no difference and no update in either case.
Neither scheduling nor opening and refreshing the report in InfoView helps.
So what am I doing wrong?
- On our BO server we have not installed Crystal Reports Developer. Is this a prerequisite for the OLE links to update?
- And Tony wrote that he could resolve this by changing the logged on user with CR Job Server. Where and how would I change this user?
- Any other suggestions?
Many thanks in advance!

Hi,
Here is the situation. We have a word document stored in third party system. It has got links to SAP (through fields in [http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp2005/helpdata/en/aa/8c27fbaed511d3957200a0c92f024a/content.htm] word) . Now I want to put a default value to the field, So that it always carries that value when the link between SAP and third party system is not active. I know its possible in Word 2000(using switch /d). But what about later versions? What switch to use .. Please help out. Its kind of urgent.
Thanks

Edited by: Anuj Sethi on Jul 13, 2008 9:39 AMHi Tschareck,
According to your description , my understanding is that you want to update the excel chart data when editing the chart in the word.
As a workaround, I suggest you can use SharePoint ItemUpdated Event Receiver, when you updated the chart data in the word, then reupload the excel file in the event receiver.
Here are some detailed code demo for your reference:
How to: Create an Event Receiver
programmatically upload file to sharepoint list

Problems linking to Word document
I wrote this as a reply to a similar post last week but I'm
afraid it got buried in the thread...part of Rick's response to
that poster was: "2. If you are linking to Word or .PDF documents,
there is a slight chance you will find the link actually fails for
some reason. Yet, if you simply place focus in the address bar of
your browser and press Enter to refresh, the document loads right
up. Go figure. If that begins happening, let us know and there is a
possible workaround for you."
That is the problem I'm having--can you share the workaround
you mention? It happens most--but not all--of the time, and only
with the Word documents; my PDFs and web links open with no
problem. The documents are housed on a public website. I am using
Captivate 3 if that matters.
Thank you for any help you can offer!
JulieHi Julie
Here's how it's done.
From inside Captivate 3, click File > Record/Create >
MenuBuilder Project.
Choose the Blank Project type and click OK.
Click Options > Project Options...
Configure the width and height to the smallest possible
values. This will be 320 wide and 200 tall.
Click OK.
Click Insert > Clickbox.
Type the file name of the Word document or PDF and ensure you
click to place a check mark in the "Save file with project" check
box.
Click OK and you should see a dialog asking if you want to
browse for the file. Click No.
Size the Clickbox so it covers the entire project area.
Click File > Export.
Save the project using any name you like. I frequently do
this and just use "Untitled" as that's what it suggests.
Choose Flash Movie as the type of project and click Next
>.
Type a name to identify the .SWF and choose an easy to
remember location. I often use the Desktop.
Click Finish.
Close MenuBuilder. You are finished with that (unless you
wish to create more of these)
In Captivate on the slide where you want the user to click to
open the document or PDF, click Insert > Animation.
Browse to the location where you exported the Menubuilder
file and select it.
What you are doing is creating a MenuBuilder output to drop
into a Captivate project to open files. I'm not sure why or how
it's different than the way Captivate works, but different it is.
Hopefully this helps you out... Rick -
Linking to Word Document anchors
Hi,
I realise this isn't strictly a jsp question but I want to put a link in my jsp that will link to an anchor (bookmark) created in a word document.
1) is this possible - I suspect not ( I can currently only get it to link to the top of the word doc)
2) if so - how!!
Thanks for any helpI think that the people in M$ are the only ones who know... and most probably they are not going tell you!

I just want to create a discoverer workbook that allows the user to link to a Word document. How can I accomplish this?
This can be accomplished in the Administration edition. The file path can be stored in the database table. Then through the Admin edition, create an LOV on the item, then go to properties, and set the content type to file. The report will have a MS Word icon embedded which will point to your doc.

How to link a PDF, word, & Excel file in fla by clicking
a button?sorry il try be more clear, ok so the user selects a server from a list as well as adds many other details then clicks the create button so then it is directed to a page with the report.
The report contains the information which the user has just created, so the server name will be there.
Now what i want to achieve is to create a link with this report called 'download'. So it is at this stage i would like to know if in the select statement if i can say, eg;
<code>
if (column) ---> server_name = 'server1'
link to this document
else if (column) ---> server_name = 'server2'
link to a different document
<code>
So i want to link to specific server spec document depending on that server name...
thanks

Internal links within Word documents
I have lots of hyperinks within my Word 97 document which jump to bookmarks at specific points within the document. Having jumped to the bookmark I can click on the Back arrow in Word to return to the point of origin. Will this process work if I convert the Word document to PDF format? (It doesn't work if I use Word's print facility using PDF995 to achieve the conversion; eveything else works, but not the internal hyperlinks).
Thanks for help, anybody.A purchase and install of Acrobat XI (Standard or Pro) will provide
Acrobat's PDFMaker. This provides a way to get the interactive PDF.
BUT---to use PDFMaker you have to have a compatible Office version.
Word 97 is very old and thus not compatible with PDFMaker.
An upgrade to contemporary software would let you accomplish what you want.
