Change Look of Hard Drive on Desktop

I bought a second G4 Mac (QuickSilver 2002) on ebay.  How do I change the look of the Desktop when I double-click on "WD1200 Boot Drive" (see picture) to the look of "Mac Companion" (see picture) when I double-click on "WD1200 Boot Drive?"

Niel, I can't get to the bottom right of the window mentioned above to re-size the window.  What should I do?
Enclosed please find screen picture.

  • HT204370 I have changed my internal hard drive on my macbook pro. I have put old hard drive into a capsule and have this plugged into my laptop. I can't find the movies on my old hard drive now? Any idea how I can move them to iTunes again? cloud taking H

I have just changed my internal Hard drive on my MacBook pro. I had recently downloaded some movies on iTunes which I want to put into my iTunes library on my new internal hard drive. I have put my old internal hard drive into an external capsule but when I open the icon of the hard drive from the desktop I can't find my movies.
At the moment I have the new movies downloading again from the cloud but it is literally taking hours for even one movie to load.
When I changed the internal hard drive I restored my info from my old external hard drive which hadn't been backed up in a month and hence does not have my latest movies...
I am concerned that I might go over my internet usage limit (flatmate is refusing to change to unlimited package!!!!) by downloading all the movies again from the cloud never mind how long it is taking...
Is there any way to restore all my info and media from the old internal Hard drive in the capsule as well as from the external hard drive?

It means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive.

  • When I try to open firefox it pops up, "do you want to allow changes to your hard drive" everytime

Firefox update while I was trying to resolve a issue with a brother fax drive to update for windows 7, now every time I go to firefox it pops up, "Do you want to allow changes on your hard drive" as if it didn't finish, so I answer "yes", firefox browser comes up, but if I get out and go back in it does the same thing.
in the pop up window is listed; C:\program file(x86)Mozilla firefox\firefox.exe
But when I search it, nothing

Check that you do not run Firefox as Administrator.
Right-click the Firefox desktop shortcut and choose "Properties".
In the Compatibility tab, make sure that Privilege Level: "Run this program as Administrator" is not selected.
You also need to check the Properties of the firefox.exe program in the Firefox program directory.
If you can't make the changes then you need to start Windows Explorer as Administrator.

  • Since upgrading to Firefox 5, I can no longer browse for attachments in AOL Webmail, and every time I open Firefox, it asks me if Mozilla can make changes to my hard drive. I've gone back to Internet Explorer.

I upgraded to the latest version of Mozilla Firefox and ever since then, every time I open Firefox it asks me if I want to allow Mozilla to make changes to my hard drive. I have to answer "Yes" or else it won't open Firefox. Then when I open my AOL Webmail and try to browse for an attachment, it freezes up the browser window and I have to open the Task Manager to close Firefox. I have now gone back to Internet Explorer which does not have either one of these problems.

Maybe just corrupted Disk Utility preferences ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DiskUtility.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.DiskUtility.plist file to the Trash.
Restart your Mac then try creating a .dmg file.

Hello, I changed my Imac hard drive which no longer worked. I installed a hard drive
Western Digital 500 GB 7200 rpm SATA3 WD5002AALX 32M Black. Sometimes I see the hard disk in the utility on the Starter CD, but access seems very slow. By cons when I want
install OS X 10.4.2 on the hard drive, I do not see the disk. What is the problem?

    Thanks for the help
I started on the installation CD OS X 10.4.2, I used Disk Utility
to partition the disk according to the document that you have proposed. unfortunately
I have not succeeded. When I partition the disk, even if I called it Macintosh HD, it
does not keep the name and it shows disk0s3 instead. I did an erase on disk.
When I mount the disk it tells me that I must repair. When I tried to repair, I got
    the following message:
    Volume check failed
The underflying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error.
    I also had a message:
    Invalid b-tree node size.
Note: The disc is new, but it has already been formatted on a computer Imac 27 inch 2011 OS X Lion.
I used a USB 2.0 to SATA cable to adjust the formatting.
What to do to fix it?

Unfortunately, that drive is long gone, probably back to the mfr. Drives are not returned when they are exchanged. You can go by and ask them, but the chances are slim to none.

  • I want to change my macbook hard drive to a bigger drive

I want to change my macbook hard drive to a bigger drive, its a duo core. I would like to know what make is best and where do i get the tools for it eg screwdriver, static protector . Where do I order my drive from.
Can I change my drive on this model. I'm in the uk. thanks for the help

These are very good instructions on How to Upgrade Your MacBook's Hard Drive.
Here is the Apple DIY hard drive replacement instructions.
The only step they left out is the need for a number 8 Torx Driver to swap a shield from the old drive to the new.
Tools can be ordered on the net or check with some friends you never know what they might have. The hardest one to find will be the Torx driver but some radio shacks carry them.
OWC carries an assotment of nice drives. Check the bottom of the page in the link below.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/MacBook/DDR2/
This will give you an idea of what you need.
Here is a place in the UK you can check.

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

Thanks for the help.

    i buy the new imac,late 2012 with a hard-drive 3TB and i want to change with another hard-drive 1TB....where i can buy?

It's also much more difficult to install third-party hard drives in current or recent Macs than it was. See:
    http://blog.macsales.com/10146-apple-further-restricts-upgrade-options-on-new-im acs
The 2012 iMacs are also in essence glued together and very difficult to disassemble and reassemble. The bottom line is: don't try it.
Why, if I may ask, would you want to remove the 3TB drive and replace it with a 1TB drive? What is it you hope to achieve even if it were possible?
    Regards.

Does Apple Genius change my iMac hard drive to SSD?? If i already bought a ssd ??? and just take ssd and  my imac to genius and maintain my apple care??

wouldn't it make a difference if the SSD was an Apple product?  And can't you order just the Apple SSD?  At the local Apple store many of the geniuses won't touch it if it's a third party item.

  • External hard drives and desktop

    Hi, and happy new year.
I use several hard drives, Firewire 400 & 800 mostly, but query would apply to USB also.
When i connect a drive it appears in a random position on my desktop ( I have a fairly cluttered desktop), is there any way to ensure that drives appear below my startup drive, nice and neat? If I'm using partitioned drives then all partitions would be nice in one neat column, rather than around the desktop. Is there away to organise them in the dock?
    regards, alan bell in uk

    No problem.
    (1) Click on the Finder icon in the Dock.  If your dock is on the bottom of the screen, it is the icon on the far left.
    (2) Now, look at the menu called Finder at the top left of your screen and find "Preferences there". Or, you can just press command-,  (command-comma).
    (3) Anyway, once the Preference window opens select the category "General" from the choices there.  You will see a list of things which you can choose to have displayed on the Desktop.  Make your selections and close the window.

  • How to change a faulty hard drive on MacBook Pro

The hard drive on my laptop is failing: overall performance has greatly diminished, the computer has slowed down, sometimes even crashing;  looking at /var/ log messages, plenty of I/O error messages are building up.
Added to this, the System Information (system report) says that the Hitachi (750 Gb, 7200 rpm, model HTS727575A9E362) SATA drive is failing (S.M.A.R.T. status)
    I have a 15" MacBook Pro (Late 2011).
So, my question: what's the best way to change it for a new hard disk drive, and be sure it's compatible?
The computer's warranty has already expired, and have no extended coverage....I've been looking around the www for laptop hard drives in Apple retail stores, and can't find any. Any help is greatly appreciated.

apple doesnt sell hard drives.  Look on newegg.com or macsales.com.  Any 2.5" that is 9.5 mm or less in height will fit.  Here are installation instructions: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Unibody+Late+2011+Hard+Drive+Rep lacement/7513

  • G4 How Can I Change the StartUp Hard drive?

I want change the OS StartUp from the factory 10GB hard drive to the 80GB hard drive (WD800BB) I added. I am using 10.4.11 Tiger and need to upgrade to 10.5 Leopard. However, 10.5 requires 9GB free space, the 10GB factory drive is really 9.5GB. This cuts it really close. I still have the original install disks for 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 and willing to "clean" the 10GB hard drive as it only holds the OS. Any suggestions?

Go to System Preferences > Syatem > Startup Disk to make the change.
Suggestion - Get rid of the 10G HD. HDs are very cheap today. Get a larger HD, like 100-120GB.
Based on your profile listing that you have a G4 sawtooth, nbut 1.8GHz processor. I assume you have upgraded the processor speed.
The sawtooth can only use HDs up 128GB. Look at these links.

  • Can't see external hard drive on desktop

I have an external firewire drive that will not appear on my desktop. I can see it if I use Disk Utility and I've run a check on the drive and it appears ok. I plugged the drive into a different computer and it showed up fine, but when I put it back on this computer, no go.
    Any ideas?

Brian, you could try installing the hard drive internally with your boot drive, jumpers set to slave or cable select depending on your setup. I had this happen once before and I had to reformat the drive from the IDE cable.
Also look at the jumpers settings, especially if it is WD. They have a different setting for Master and Single unlike most other major brands.
Since you can see it in DU try Disk Repair and Repairing Permissions and try mounting it from the DU upper menu also.
