Change Magic Trackpad move cursor, select functions

I just got a Magic Trackpad for my iMac and it's great but... it's too sensitive to my admittedly heady-handed use. Can I separate the single-finger cursor movement function from the "touch and click" selection function so I can move the cursor but need a specific (two-finger?) touch/tap for selection?

Press down on the trackpad until it clicks.
Nope, the magic trackpad doesn't do this. That's the problem.
Huh, how odd. Mine does. Did Apple change the Magic Trackpad since I bought mine? Or maybe yours is defective?
The press-down-till-click is also used in either the left or right bottom corner to activate a right-click. Chosen in the trackpad preferences. Though I've gotten used to the two-finger tap for that instead.

I would take it to an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider  (AASP) for evaluation, or call your nearest Apple Contact Center. Visit the Genius Bar at the Apple Retail Store,  make a reservation.

  • MAGIC TRACKPAD how to select text?  There is no "mouse button" to hold down

The magic trackpad doesn't seem to have a "button" that can be held down while dragging (in order to select text etc).
I want to select text & then paste it into an input box (for example, Search).
Apple needs to add virtual Function Keys to the top of the MT, allowing you to turn on scripted functions related to selecting, dragging, copying, pasting etc.

Press down on the trackpad until it clicks.

  • Magic Trackpad stuck on selected text

The MT seems to have selected some text. I cannot seem to unselect the text. Whenever I move the cursor it selects whatever is under it. i have tried hitting ESC to unselect it but still not working.
Has anyone esle run into this problem with the MT? If so what did you do to fix it?
Thanks and I look forward to your reply.

My trackpad on my late 2008 Macbook Pro also often (sometimes all the time...) selects everything on the screen where the mouse cursor is at that time.
Really annoying, because it just keep clicking and selecting, so moves windows, change cursor position during typing and lots more annoying things.
BUT I don't think my / the problem is software related !!!!!
I have my Macbook now for little over 2 years, and what I suspect is that the housing of the Macbook (to the left and right of the trackpad) is bending down towards the bottom of the laptop (so towards your legs if the laptop is just sitting in your lap). Maybe it's material fatigue or it becomes softer when it becomes warm/hot because of the battery....
It sometimes gets so worse that I just have to touch the long edge of the laptop soooooo very gentle, with one finger, and it responds as a mouse click.
The problem comes and goes. Sometimes its not there for weeks, and other times its there for a long time.
Really annoying because the laptop is now over 2 years old, and I don't think I have warranty anymore.... (and also because it is the "old" all silver Macbook Pro 17" and they don't make these anymore. And I like the look of it better then the new line of Macbook's.
    Ideas anyone ?????
    Thanks!!

  • I accidentally changed a setting that changed the way my cursor selects objects...

I used to move my cursor over an object and would see all the paths, now when I hover a small square appears next to the arrow but none of the lines preview.  Whatever I did also doesn't allow me to transform an object's size without selecting the free transform option and it no longer shows me that objects are aligned.  I am so confused and have no idea what I did but I have tried to reset the workspace and looked at my preferences and I don't see anything that seems like it would be the right item to change...
Has anyone ever had this issue and, if so, did you figure out how to go back?

Thanks!  I tried both and the bounding box option did help with the one issue.  I think that I it must be something to do with the direct select tool because the cursor looks different when it hovers over objects and the "intersect" and "center" previews no longer display when I am trying to move objects or text on the page...

  • My magic trackpad mouse cursor disappears

I have a Macbook Pro, running Snow Leopard and from time to time my mousecursor just disappears. It's not while I'm typing but when i just hover over the screen. This happens especially when using iPhoto and Safara but also with some other applications. The cursor usually appears again when I move it over the dock and back into the application but it's kind of annoying. Any ideas how i can resolve this problem permanently? Thank you!

Please describe in detail all you have attempted to do in order to resolve the issue.   Have you tried trashing the mouse preferences?  Tried the suggestions mentioned in the Intel-based Apple Portables: Troubleshooting unresponsive trackpad issues article?

  • Need help with magic trackpad.  some touch functions stopped working.  battery full and all touch options checked appropriately.  whats the deal?

i have tried everything but the tap functions stopped working.  any ideas?

Update: I mucked about more after making this post; I installed gnome-alsa-mixer and checked the "internal mic" option and "Auto-Mute mode" (both were off), after this my headphone output works again, and does the built-in microphone (!)
I have no idea how I ended up in this "broken" situation, or even what this option does, or how to use it without gnome-alsa-mixer (I had to install 15 packages to get this, as I normally don't use gnome)... Sound on Linux still seems no better than when I started using it 15 years ago :-( (I spent about 5 hours on this...)

  • Cursor freezes soon after waking from sleep, Magic Trackpad

I have a mid-2011 21.5" iMac with a Magic Trackpad. Cursor sometimes freezes within a few minutes of waking from sleep. Sometimes it happens several times a day, sometimes I've gone almost a week without it happening. Keyboard continues to work but trackpad is non-responsive. To get it working again I go to Spotlight using the keyboard and search Bluetooth, arrow down to Bluetooth System Preferences in the Spotlight results. After a little while the cursor starts working again.
When it happens this appears in the Console:

This is what I've tried over the past six months: I have tried 3 pairs of Apple recharger batteries (same batteries work fine in keyboard) and a new pair of Energizer batteries, I have tried resetting PRAM and SMC. Three clean installs of Mavericks: First clean install I restored from Time Machine backup. Second clean install I did Migration Assistant from SuperDuper backup. Third time I created new user and did manual drag and drop from backup of user files and manually reinstall apps. I did not move over my fonts in case there were any corrupt ones, so the only fonts I have came with Mavericks. I have a new trackpad courtesy of AppleCare, as well as a new Bluetooth board. I have tried trashing the Bluetooth prefs, removing the trackpad from the Bluetooth list and pairing again. I have seached for solutions in the discussions as well as other sites.
If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it.

I had the same problem. I have found a work around - sort of. I have unchecked the option to "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" (System Preferences / Bluetooth / Advanced). I no longer have the problem. Having to wake the computer another way (I have a USB wireless mouse so no problem for me) and waiting a second or two for the bluetooth devices to connect is less annoying than continually losing trackpad connection. I hope that helps you too.

  • Magic trackpad freezes

After installing 10.7.3 when waking from sleep magic trackpad sometimes freezes. If I then I use a mouse the magic trackpad starts working.

Select  ▹ System Preferences ▹ Bluetooth. Select the device in the list on the left, then from the action menu (gear icon) below the list, select Update Services. Any change?

  • How to move cursor to a particular field in a form when the form opens

    Hi All,
Using Forms Personalization how to move the cursor to a particular field in a form when the form opens. We are using Oracle Applications 11.5.10.2
Please let me know as soon as possible.
    Thanks,
    --John.

    Hi Satya,
    Try the following
    Open the forms personalization window
    Seq: 10
    description : Move cursor
    Level : Function
    On Condition Tab-
    Trigger Event : when-new-item-instance
Trigger Object:- (The field on which the cursor is appearing now when you open the form ) for eg : If I am working on a vendor Master form in that case it would be -VNDR.VENDOR_NAME_MIR.
    Processing Mode : Both
    Context:
whatever context you want to do it respoansibility level or user level.
    On the Actions Tab
    Seq: 1
    Type: Bulletin
    Bulletin type : GO_ITEM
Argument : The field to which you want to navigate to. (In my case I want to navigate to Alternate name on the Vendor master form so it would be VNDR.VENDOR_NAME_ALT_MIR).
see if it works for you.
    cheers,
    Ankur

  • Magic Trackpad able to move cursor with finger movements, will not respond to selecting or tapping an item

    Hello,
I have a Magic Trackpad that I'm trying to get to work on a Mac Mini OSX 10.6.8.  I should note I recently purchased the trackpad second hand and not been ever able to have it fully functioning.  The trackpad connects to the mini with no issue and I am able to move the cursor in any direction with no problem.  I can not however get this trackpad to select an item or otherwise open anything.  It seems it is unresponsive to either me pressing my finger down or tapping the trackpad to select something.
Do I just have a boken trackpad?  Or am I doing something wrong/need a configuration change?  I have a magic mouse that works without issue, but this trackpad is giving me fits!

You have to press hard enough to make the feet at the front corners click, or you can enable Tap-to-Click in the Trackpad system preference.

  • The select function in Pages and other apps gets stuck and the cursor will not move. What do I do?

The select function in Pages and other apps gets stuck when I touch a word and the cursor will not move. What is the answer for this problem?

    Try reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
Note: Data will not be affected.

  • Magic Trackpad Cursor Jumps or Moves Without the Trackpad Being Touched

Magic Trackpad Cursor Jumps or Moves Without the Trackpad Being Touched.
Try turning off your Bluetooth mouse or other nearby devices, especially if you find the cursor on your screen jumps or moves without the trackpad being touched. The cursor may also act strangely when the trackpad is touched.
The closest I found to a solution was in an old support article from March 2009 (TS1449), but it was through pure luck and MacGuyverism that I figured out my wireless Mighty Mouse was still on, nearby and thought it might be interfering with the signal to/from the Magic Trackpad. Sure enough. Turned it off and the problem instantly went away! Turned it on and the problem came back. Not sure if more distance would make a difference, but I saw no need for both on my desk anyway.

I have the same issue, but my mouse is turned off. I put the pad off to the side just to make sure. I just tried removing my mouse from the Bluetooth preferences. I've never had trouble with the mouse jumping before, but I do with the Magic Trackpad.

I am having problems with my Magic Trackpad.  All I can do is move the cursor and single click.  I using the most current version of Lion.

In System Preferences > Trackpad > your preferences should look like this screenshot.  If they don't then some 3rd party driver is conflicting.  The most common conflict is USBoverdrive.

  • Trackpad will click and select but will not move cursor

After breaking the trackpad in my early 2008 MBP I replaced it.
Upon startup the trackpad will click and select but will not move cursor... I have tried all system resets short of wiping and reinstalling OS.
    Any suggestions?

Because the click has to deal with a physical button press while the movement has to deal with the trackpad detecting the movement of your finger on it.
Just for giggles, if you hold down the Option key on bootup and get to the boot menu on it, does the mouse work then?  If so, then it's an OS issue (could be a setting or some .plist that's jacked up.
