Change mobileme imap to pop

after trying to change my mail account from MobileMe IMAP to POP, when i tried to log in, it said that either my username or password was incorrect.
any clues guys?

Sorry, but I just realized I'd asked the question backwards. IMAP to POP is actually fairly straightforward, easy to grasp, and covered pretty well in KB articles and elsewhere.
My real question: What about the reverse, changing from POP to an IMAP account? I can't find any coverage on that at all, KB or otherwise, so —
a) Are server contents (bound to be sparser than IMAP, perhaps none) also untouched?
b) Won't all the mboxes in the POP-named folder disappear? In fact, doesn't the folder itself disappear? Doesn't that mean that all messages in those mailboxes (Inbox, Sent, Trash, etc.) are lost unless you back them up or otherwise move/copy them out of those locations?

Should I change to IMAP from POP?

Hi all,
I have just purchased an older iMac which will now be my Mac at work. I will be keeping the Powerbook at home and want to be able to check the same mail boxes from there.
Is it best to change to IMAP accounts or keep them as POP?
I have had all my email accounts (5 addresses) POP for the last 5 years, but I still go into the ISP server and delete as needed. Now that I have a second machine I see it starting to get difficult to manage it manually.
I am a graphic designer so do get largish attachments often.
What is the best way I should be managing my accounts now that I have a home and work machine that I want to be able to read and write from? I have given it a go to read about POP or IMAP but haven't found a good resource that explains what would suite me best.

The easiest way to manage email accounts across multiple computers or locations is to use IMAP. Here's a good site to start learning about the differences between POP and IMAP and the advantages of the latter.

On my mac vs. mobileme - imap vs. pop - where is my mail going?

i am totally tired of this hanky panky!
so here is the problem. i use a mobileme mail account and i am trying to switch from eudora to apple mail. i imported the last three months of e-mails from eudora to apple mail, and it appeared in ON MY MAC/Import.
ok, so now new e-mail from mobileme is coming into the MAILBOXES/Inbox, and I just noticed one unread message disappear. where is it going? how do i get the messages from the Inbox to go to a corresponding folder in ON MY MAC? and what do the MOBILEME folders contain?
i know that pop servers downloaded all the e-mail to your computer, and that imap servers are meant to keep a copy on the server. i don't really want to delete e-mail on the imap server until i figure out if it is actually going somewhere on my mac and staying there.
any answers would be highly appreciated!

Firstly, activate the "Show Mailboxes" option in the View menu.
Now you can easily select, drag or command-drag to your On My Mac or to .Mac, or delete or rename any of your mailboxes, using the small wheel menu at the bottom of the Mailboxes View blue column.
Dragging a mailbox from .Mac to On My Mac should uplicate the mailbox (green "+").
Command-dragging (no green "+") moves the mailbox without leaving a duplicate at the original location.
Make sure by just draging the mailboxes (duplicating them). Then when you verified they are successfully transferred at their new location, you can delete them from the original place.

How do I change my email account from IMAP to POP on my MacBook Pro

My email provider has changed and no longer uses Yahoo IMAP, so I need to change the email to a POP account but my MacBook automatically chooses Yahoo IMAP when I try to create a new account. Any suggestions how I can change from IMAP to POP?

My email provider is BT and they have just moved me from BT Yahoo Mail to BT Mail. I deleted the Yahoo email account and then used the Other Account option to input BT Mail, but unfortunately my MacBook decided that it still wanted me to use BT Yahoo. So for several weeks I keep getting locked out of my mail and get the message box "Can't access mail' or something like that and wants me to put in the Yahoo mail password which is no longer valid. I don't actually want to use POP (and actually have no idea what IMAP AND POP do!), but when I contacted BT support they suggested that I needed to use POP for BT Mail. However having trawled the BT site I think what I was told was a load of rubbish. So I suppose the real question is how to get rid of Yahoo Mail.

I have Yahoo Mail Plus. When I first got my iPhone 4, I set it up so my yahoo email was accessible on my phone without my doing anything. I only check the email from two devices: my desktop via the internet, and my iPhone. I'm pretty sure the email set up on my phone is an IMAP protocol, because when I delete an email from one device, it deletes it on the other device.
I actually want to change it so that when I delete an email on my phone, it DOESN'T delete it from the Yahoo server. I think that's the POP protocol. I realize setting it up as POP will require that I delete the emails multiple places. I can live with that. What I don't currently like is that all of the emails I've saved in my Yahoo account, in multiple folders, are now also sitting on my iPhone. It's a risk exposure I'd like to eliminate. My iPhone password is a start, but I'd feel better if I could purge old emails off my iPhone. Right now, if I delete the various emails and folders from my phone, it's my understanding they'll also be gone from my Yahoo internet account. I don't want that.
I've read various posts saying I should delete my Yahoo email account on my iPhone and then set it up as a new account and select POP.
1. Is that the only way to change from IMAP to POP?
2. If I delete Yahoo mail on my iPhone, what will happen to my stored emails on Yahoo? Will they be saved or deleted?
3. Is there another solution?
4. Any other advice?

First off, you are correct in the assumption that emails are sitting on your iPhone. You should, however have the option to set how much to sync, as well as what folders to sync to determine what is visible. The only setting to change that is to set a passcode on the phone.
Also, deleting the emails and folders from the phone will result in them being deleted from the server, this is how IMAP works.
To answer your other quesetions:
1. That would have to be answered by Yahoo, since the server would have to be different. An IMAP server acts differently than POP.
2. Deleting will delete everything everywhere.
3. The only other solution I can think of is as I stated earlier is if there is a setting for days to sync in IMAP. I'm not sure of this since I do not use an IMAP account. I know that Exchange behaves in this way.
4. If this does not work as you want after talking ot Yahoo, then maybe selecting a POP email provider and forwarding the Yahoo mail to that and picking up the POP mail on the iPhone.
I think that Yahoo will give you information that you will need to start your search for answers.

How do I change an IMAP MacMail acct. to a POP acct on my iMac?

I have an iMac OS 10.6.8 and am using MacMail through AT&T (I know, yuck). Today I created a new macmail account. I noticed it automatically created an IMAP account. I also noticed the incoming and outgoing mail servers didn't match my other email accounts (all POP accounts) so I changed them (along w/the Port # & a few other things). When I first changed the incoming mail server to pop.att.yahoo, I noticed the Account Type changed to att.net POP. Yay! But somewhere along the line, it's back to an IMAP account w/all the POP settings. ???
I cannot find any information at AT&T nor here about how to change an IMAP account to a POP account. As I mentioned, MacMail did NOT offer me a choice when creating this new email account and there is no button-down option to choose POP on Account Type. Any suggestions? Did something in MacMail change in the past year or two?

Lablady here--> I can't seem to find a way to edit my initial post so I'm adding information in a reply:
From further research & chatting with AT&T, they keep asking me to "Deselect "Automatically set up account" if it is enabled." and that that button should be on the first window when I click to Add an Account. It is NOT there.
I've been searching the Internet and have found nothing that offers an explanation although I have seen other people asking a similar question: "Can you create a POP account with macmail 4.5?" which seems to say that someone else is having the same problem that I'm having.
Also, it was suggested that perhaps I have reached my limit of POP accounts, so macmail won't create another one. I have my primary account plus 4 sub accounts with POP. I've never heard of any limits on POP or IMAP accounts, have you?
This really is ridiculous. If there is a way to DeSelect Automatically setting up the accounts, can someone send me a screen shot? Or was that option removed with macmail 4.5?? I've been through all the information within macmail: General, Accounts, RSS, Junk Mail, Fonts & colors, Viewing, Composing, Signatures, Rules and don't see a thing about that. I've also looked through the macmail drop-down choices: Mail, File, Edit, etc. and don't see anything that says to DeSelect or even TO Select this option. What am I missing?
I don't like having anything on servers. I want my mail downloaded onto my computer & immediately deleted from the server. I really need to get this email up and running in POP so I would appreciate any ideas, suggestions you have. Many thanks!

If the setting is greyed out perhaps you have restrictions enabled that would prevent someone from changing accounts. Settings>General>Restrictions>Allow Changes>Accounts.

The Skinny on IMAP vs POP Email and work arounds

     It took me a while to figure out email so I figured I'd share what I've learned so far. Do feel free to reply with more useful tips for us all if anyone has some.
First email accounts are either IMAP or POP and the first step was figuring out the difference:
IMAP
   Mirror of the server
What is done one place is done everywhere because you are looking at the server.
       Advantage: can access email from multiple devices/locations
       Disadvantage: May have to mark as read individually when adding to a new device
POP
   Independent of the server
What is done one place stays that place because you have moved it from the server.
        Advantage: once it's delivered the mail can be viewed offline
        Disadvantage: where ever it is delivered once, the other divices do no have access to the mail
Think of the server as a huge mailbox as big as a room!
   IMAP
With IMAP the mail stays in the mailbox until you delete it permenently,
    but once it is deleted it has moved out of the main part of the huge mailbox into the trash can in the room of the huge mailbox (the trash folder settings decide when the trash gets taken out and deleted permenently) when deleted permenently it is no longer in the trash can in the huge mailbox it has been taken out the the dump.
If you read it then it's like opening the mail but leaving it in the huge mailbox.
If you move it to another folder then it's like moving it to the desk in the room but still in the mailbox.
   POP
With POP the mail is taken out of the mailbox and moved to the computer (in the other room)
Once you request/download your mail it is taken off of the server and whatever is done with the mail the server no longer has access to it
If you read it (or move it to a folder) it is the same thing as Mom taking the mail out of the huge mailbox and putting it in the car, if Dad checks the mailbox the mail may have been delivered by Dad is not going to find it because it is no longer in the mailbox it is with Mom in the car.

Finally, as promised, work around for your email:
    If you only have access to a POP email account and it won't work on your iPhone or want it to act like an IMAP account, then follow these steps~
1)   Get a free IMAP email account (using Gmail for this example)
2) Sign in to your Gmail account
3) Click the gear icon in the upper-right
4) Select Gmail settings
5) Select the Accounts and Import tab
6) Under Send mail as, click Add another email address
7) In the 'Email address' field, Enter your name and alternate email address (ie the POP address)
8) Choose use Gmail's servers to send your mail
9) Click Next Step>>
10) Click Send Verification
             (Gmail will send a verification message to your alternate email address to confirm that you own it)
11) Open your other account and click the link in the message Gmail sent
12) Add your new Gmail account to your iphone
You will be able to send, receive, reply, forward, delete, and manage folders of your other address through your Gmail address on your phone and it will appear to the recipients as though it came from your other address.

Allan, I have run into questions in this area recently since I got my iPhone. I have a long time Charter ISP POP email account which I've accessed with Apple Mail. This has worked fine. I also have a Yahoo web based account which I've also used separately.
Now when I set up my Yahoo account on my iPhone it worked great. But when I set up the Charter account it resulted in an IMAP account with incoming and outgoing servers being mobile.charter.net. Charter website implies that all email accounts on all mobile devices must be set up like this. My question is whether I can, or should, try to set up the account manually as a POP on my iPhone so it will behave similarly to the Charter POP account in my iMac?
I've run into some conflicts after using my iPhone to access my Charter email. My inbox on my desktop iMac in Apple Mail will give me the message that another client is accessing the email account when I try to get new mail soon after my iPhone has been accessing the Charter account. I've wondered whether this is a conflict between IMAP and POP?

ICloud MobileMe IMAP rejected password

Greetings,
After moving my MobileMe account to iCloud, I am now getting an error message in mail that states:
The MobileMe IMAP server “p99-imap.mail.me.com” rejected the password for user “xxxxxxx”
It keeps popping up a window asking me to enter my me.com password, but won't accept my password.
I googled this error and see a bunch of threads here and other places about problems with IMAP passwords and this same error message back in 2008/2009. But I've never seen this error before, and since it happed just after the transition to iCloud, I suspect it is realted.
Any suggestions?

My iPhone and iPad are working fine, only place I'm getting the error is on my MacBook.
In the mail preferences under "Accounts", I now see two accounts, one for MobileMe and one from iCloud.
I'm going to give things a day or so to settle down and see if the servers catch up. I'm sure they are buried with the volume at the moment. I'm not ready to delete my MobileMe account... I've got a backup, but don't want to lose anything.

Googlemail folders (IMAP vs POP Which is the lesser of the two evils)

I just changed my googlemail account to IMAP from POP as I was sick of rereading emails on my iphone that I had already read on my laptop. Now emails appear twice, in 'Inbox' and also in the googlemail 'All Mail' folder. I've tried the 'mailbox' / 'use this mailbox for' trick but it obviously doesn't work for the 'all mail' one.
I just want for my Apple mail folders to appear as they did when it was set up through POP but for it to unmark the messages I've read on other devices/online and vice vercer.
I'm tearing my hair out and ready to just revert to reading all emails online, at least then I won't have to read them twice. Any help comes much appreciated

As I understand the matter, Google IMAP keeps messages in the "All Mail" folder and just tags labels like "Inbox" or "From Uncle Al". This means that for every message there inevitably will appear a duplicate in the "All Mail" folder in Apple Mail.
If you already have read all messages and the unread counter next to the "All Mail" folder still says "7" then select "Mailbox" > "Sync all accounts" in Mail.app.
One more addition: if you don't like "Drafts" and "Spam" to be sub-entries to the white GoogleMail folder in the sidebar, you can move them by selecting each in turn and setting "Mailbox" > "Use this mailbox for".
Hope that clears up the matter.

Email Account Migration - Query re IMAP v POP

I have a query about the migration from Yahoo to BT Email, apologies if it has been raised before.
I currently use Mozilla Thunderbird on two PCs. I'm using IMAP, which synchronises both PCs with my email account such that all emails in all folders look the same on both devices, if my understanding is correct. BT have told me that I'm being migrated to their new email service next week, and I need to change my settings from IMAP to POP in order to continue using Thunderbird. However, their explanation implies that this synchronisation will no longer happen when using POP. Is this correct? If so, how on earth do I get email on all my devices to look the same? It doesn't sound like much of an upgrade to me. Hopefully I've got it wrong, but could some kind soul enlighten me without getting too technical? Many thanks in advance.

To make your life easy with the migration you should make your MyBT BTID your primary BT email address and password prior to the migration. ie. when you log onto MyBT you have to use your email address and password. ( Not the best most secure thing BT have thought of but it is what they are wanting at the moment) If you do that once you are migrated you need to log on to BTMail via
https://signin1.bt.com/login/emailloginform
and it will take you through the migration process which is fairy straight forward.

Instead of using the large preset account settings icons (Google, AOL, Yahoo, etc), use the "Other" option on the bottom. You'll have to enter more info manually, but, if offered by your service provider, you can choose between IMAP and POP by the settings you provide.

IMAP versus POP, room for improvement

IMAP su cks, and POP is 'grouchy' what to do....
I want (need actually) all incoming and outgoing mail to be saved permanently on my mac. Problem is using IMAP, when the mail from the server is deleted - it gets deleted everywhere (synced). EVEN IF YOU SET MAIL TO KEEP A LOCAL COPY. How stupid is that? POP suits me to a 'T', however with more than one platform retrieving mail from the same server a problem develops.
I set my iPhone to not delete from server when retrieving and my mac to delete as soon as the mail is retrieved. This works really well. I usually respond on the mac, and mostly use the iPhone to check mail on the road. If I do send a reply, I Bcc it back to my account so it ends up on my mac.
Trouble is when my mac and iPhone check the same account within a few minutes of each other, the mail server won't let the later of the two machines log in (as one is still logged in). This causes the mail retrieval to fail along with its associated annoying 'wrong password' messages and/or the account goes offline.
I have an elegant solution that would create a 'hyper IMAP' without breaking any IMAP or POP rules.
Using the IMAP protocol, outgoing iPhone mail could easily be copied, tagged to indicate its status and emailed back to the same account. IPhone would ignore it as it has a 'tag'. The main mac would retrieve it, read the tag (remove the tag) and store it in the right folder (sent box, or even sent form iPhone box). All mail sent/received on the main mac would be treated like POP, in that it would be stored locally. Using tags the mac would know if files should be cleared from the server or not, as any deleted by the iPhone would actually be 'tagged' as deleted. As long as a copy existed on the main mac it could be cleared from the server.
This is really basic stuff. Easy to solve, with very few lines of code. APPLE!!!!! help me out here!!! I want IMAP with the ability to keep a local copy of ALL email in and outgoing from either iPhone or a Mac to end up on my main mac. I regularly search for items in email going back many years, and need a copy on my mac to search.
I am not alone in this!! Many just put up with IMAP or POP shortcomings. Why? This is 2009!!!! and we are using such primitive methods for getting text messages.
This would really offer some great functionality with very little effort for your programing team.
Does anyone else have a better (but simple) way to do this now?

The "technology" already exists if you put a little work at it. I have an Apple Script do it for me. It's a bit complex but it gets the job done very nicely. I run the script and it does the following:
1.) Takes the account offline temporarily
2.) Copies the contents of all IMAP folders to local folders of the same name
3.) Quits mail
When I launch Mail I have the option to run in normal, online mode. Or run in offline archive mode which shows me all of my folders since the last sync that the script performed. This way I have current, archived and untouched version of my IMAP account (Inbox, Sent, Trash, all subfolders).
It works great and it sounds like exactly what you're after. I can't take credit for it, though. I actually got the script after a demo of it, during MacWorld '07. The developer indicated that he published it online (never looked for it) under the name: IMAP Anywhere Archive

The filter panel is a shortcut for the content panel and it only effects the content of that window. So if you have a folder it will only see this as a folder and not with its content. (a Stack behaves about the same, being different in only counting the first file in the filter panel criteria but not what is in the stack itself)
You have a view work arounds, first is use menu view / show items from subfolders (this can take some time especially if you have not used caching before on this content) and this builds visible thumbs for all content and that can be used for filtering.
Or use the find command (Edit / find) and inhere specify the source and fill in the criteria include subfolders and this will give you the correct result.
When you create a smart collection the find command also pops up given you the same opportunity to get the results in a collection, but since a collection is only a bunch of aliases referring to the originals you might be a bit careful with editing and deleting.
