  • Possible to change the DAC in iPod Classic?

I have a 160GB iPod Classic filled with around 300 cds in lossless format. The size of the hard drive and ipod interface are great but the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired. I use Sure SE530 and Etymotic ER4P earphones, which sound amazing through the headphone amp in my regular Hi-Fi so I know it's not them. I have read that the Cirrus DAC is very likely the weakest link in this generation. Is there any way to change it out with a higher quality DAC Chip?

Apple could pretty much own the digital audio segment if they made a commitment to audio quality. If they were to make lossless files available on itunes, and built high quality dacs into their ipod and computers, they would put the CD player, transport and music distributors industries out of business. Until they find religion, we will have to fend for ourselves. Your question is really important, for if you are going to the trouble and expense (hard drive capacity use) of storing lossless files, you are also interested in the quality of the sound that comes out of your machine. Well, the solution is difficult. Most commercially available ipod docks are not line level and fewer still are digital out. If you can adjust the volume on your ipod after it is docked, then you are basically listening to the output that you would hear from your headphone jack. The reason the headphone jack sounds so bad is that is uses the internal dac of the ipod, and due to the limitations of headphones and earbuds, the headphone out bass is also attenuated. Therefore, it is important to find a dock that will use the digital source prior to the dac from your ipod. There are a few out there. Wadia makes a very expensive truely digital dock, and then you have to hook it up to your own dac with its digital out. Also, Red Wine Audio will mod a 3rd generation Ipod and upgrade the dac. Unfortunately, these solutions are so clumsy and expensive that you're better off using a Macbook or MacMini, with lossless files, and a USB dac to your audio system rcas. Someone needs to invent a compact digital dock with an integrated dac to make the ipod practical as an audiophile source. Their material doesn't get specific, so I can't figure out if the SRS iWow for the ipod is a dac, or an equilazer, but I suspect it does not bypass the ipod's dac. I'll have to call them in order to pin them down. If it simply acts as a preset equalizer, it is not much of a product. It will not add detail back to the music, nor will it be able to process the digital data in a refined manner, when compared to a quality external dac. In the meanwhile, any mac or pc can be converted into a digital source better than cd players selling for many thousands of dollars. I have one mac mini hooked up to a tube dac (and to tube monoblock amps), and another mini hooked up to an external dac and a tube buffer (and to a single ended tube amp). My next project is to figure out how to wirelessly stream my music files from my main mini, to the other one or my macbook, and to use mac tv to backup my main computers' files. I was told tonight that I can change the settings on my Airpot Extreme to do this, and I can add the mac tv later to back everything up. Other than that, all you can do is pray that Mac introduces an ipod for audiophiles. Then you can just put docks by each computer you use, wherever it is in the world, and have a first class digital source. I use dac and a USB chord with each of the other systems in my house and just plug the macbook into whichever system I want to listen to at a given time. Good luck.

  • Cannot change column size in iPod Classic

I received my Classic today and transferred over all my music. After making changes to various things, I tried to adjust the size of the columns. I cannot.
I was able to delete a column, then re-add it then change the size. In my 5th Gen Video ipod I could just but the cursor on the right side of the column and click, it would adjust to the size of the largest, Name, Artist, Album etc. I am able to change column sizes in itunes, just not the ipod.
I've looked through threads to find something that resembles my problem but most seem to be with itunes and not the ipod. Both computers I use are updated to 7.4.1
I was wondering if I restore the factory settings would I be able to change the column sizes without having to delete and re-add them? Or is this another new lovely and VERY annoying update to itunes/ipod?
    Thanks.

I can confirm that it's not (specifically) your iPod and it's not your OS. I'm running the newest iTunes through Mac OS 10.3.9 with a 3G iPod and just made a playlist with the same problems. NONE OF MY OTHER PLAYLISTS are affected - the columns there adjust just fine, but any NEW playlists I generate on my iPod will not allow me to individually adjust columns. Right-clicking on a column header does not even allow me to "Auto Size Column", but only to affect ALL the columns, or choose a column to add or remove.
Interestingly enough - new playlists I generate in iTunes (not on the iPod) work normally. However, it isn't feasible for my 10GB hard drive to automatically sync with my 15GB iPod, so I can't test and see if dragging a playlist to the iPod will generate one with alterable columns.
My opinion is that this is in some way related to the 7.4 or 7.4.1 update. I believe I last generated a playlist before the 7.4 update, and had no problems.

  • IPod Classic no longer showing folders unless I manually sync

I have had my iPod Classic for years, and am connecting it to my MacPro running 10.8.3 and iTunes 11.0.3. Have not had any problems with it until recently. I keep some of my playlists in folders, and have always only synced some of them (I have way too much in my library to sync everything). All the sudden in the last week my playlists in folders stopped showing up on my iPod. The folder shows up, but it is empty. My only solution has been to switch to manual syncing, and then the folder shows up and all the files within it (and they are already there). I have tried reformatting my iPod and resyncing, but the same problem occurs, and I have to revert to manual syncing, which is really bad when you can't break it off into it's own window.
Anyone have any ideas? this is really frustrating!

Any one else having this problem?
The only solution is o manually sync (which ***** now that you can't open multiple itunes windows) or to remove playlists from folders and they sync fine with my iPod. This only started happening recently so it must be some change in iTunes wity iPod classics.

  • Why is genius not supported on 30gig ipod classic

    Whats the deal, apple?
I highly doubt that hardware limitations have anything to do with skipping the slightly older ipod classic.
    Please release a software upgrade!
its a pain to be limited to using your new software on my laptop!

You won't be able to update an older iPod with features from a new one. As an example, when the Late 2006 version of the 5th Generation iPod was introduced it had a new search feature, this was not added retrospectively to the earlier model. The changes made to the iPod Classic and the other models are much more extensive than that one was so I wouldn't expect any aspects of the new features added through an Apple firmware update to earlier models.

  • Does the latest Ipod Classic use the same charging pins as the earlier versions?

Does the latest Ipod Classic use the same charging pin positons as the earlier versions as I want to use it in my Audi where my 5th gen Nano will play but not charge as the pin configuration for charging changed from that of the earlier models.

If your 5th gen nano doesn't change, then a new iPod Classic will not either.
The "change" was that older iPods used firewire to charge the iPod. But that's 12volts (the same voltage as a car's battery). Then along came charging by USB, which is 5volts. So car manufacturers who were on the ball, introduced electronics to drop the 12v car battery voltage to 5v and put that 5v on the appropriate USB pins. (I would hope, that by now, every car manufacturer has sorted this out, but of course that doesn't help anyone with an older model car.)
The incredibly obvious - to anyone with technical knowledge - was that one day, Apple would stop the 12v charging method on newer models of iPod. But somehow, a lot of manufacturers of devices that charge iPods failed to see this. (It really was incredibly obvious, believe me!)
It wasn't just car manufacturers who were caught out by this, so were Docking Station devices. I know of one make, where the manufacturer recalled the ones still in shops so that they could re-work them to charge using the 5v USB pins.
In my car, made around 2006, I had an external device fitted so that I could plug my iPod into the car stereo through the Dock Connector. But hey, guess what? That device will charge my iPod Classic, but not my iPod Touch.
A long-ish answer, but hopefully it not only answers the question, but tells you why too.

  • When I sync my iPod Classic, the changes I made (Ratings, Last Listened) do not show up on my computer.

When I sync my iPod Classic, the changes I made (Ratings, Last Listened) do not show up on my computer.

Try another Sync. On occasions, I've know a first Sync to behave like this.

  • When connected via USB, my Ipod Classic 160GB mounts as a disc drive, then changes to a white drive.  When iTunes automatically opens, it crashes trying to mount and/ or sync.  When it times out, my only choice is to restore, but that doesn't fix problem.

I'm running OS 10.6.8 on my 3.06 GHz iMac Intel Core 2 Duo.   I recently upgraded to iTunes 10.5.2.  I'm not sure when the trouble started but I attempted a restore when the iPod would not play correctly.  It would start to play a file and get stuck on 0 seconds.  If I put the iPod on shufle, it will stall on 0 seconds for 15 seconds or so and then move on to the next track and stall again and so on.   Seemingly randomly, it will play a few tracks but eventually start skipping again.  This will continue until the battery is depleted which is fairly quick since the drive is constantly spinning.
My 160GB iPod Classic after restore attempts now is up to date with 2.0.4. and of course, nothing works as it should and I would say the skipping issue is worse than ever.
When I connect with any of three USB connectors, the iPod mounts to the desktop as a grey/silver disk drive picon exactly like the Macintosh HD picon.   Then Finder will stall for a few minutes- spinning pinwheel.  Somehow, the dock is never affected and I am able to open other applications like Safari or tab through open windows- just no action on the desktop.  Eventually, iTunes automatically opens and Finder becomes responsive again.  At this point the grey drive picon on the desktop becomes a white drive mount picon, but the iPod does not mount in iTunes, yet.  At some point, the iPod attempts to sync, iTunes crashes with the spinning pinwheel and eventually times out and I am prompted to restore the iPod again.  Once restored,  the iPod properly mounts under devices in iTunes and, as I have done this several times, even occasionally changes to the regular iPod picon on the desktop.
I have restored several times going as far a completely deleting iTunes from my iMac, downloading the latest directly from Apple.com, and attempting to restore again, but to no avail.
I have even used the disk utility to verify and/or repair my Macintosh HD and iPod.
It seems lots of folks are going through this ordeal.  Has anyone had any success in fixing the issue, even if only temporarily?

one more detail, after a restore, when I attempt to reload music to the ipod, if I try and move, say, 20 files, the transfer seems to work as it should but then stalls on the last file.  Eventually, the status will change to "Updates Files on (my ipod)" a and suggests the iPod is syncing  even though I have the auto sync feature turned off.
This process eventually works itself out, and seems to take longer relative to the number of files I attempt to transfer.   Once done, howver, if I try and eject and dismount the iPod, iTunes stalls with the spinning pinwheel and I am warned that the iPod is syncing again with the spinning candy cane status bar.     Eventually thisd works itself out and the iPod dismounts from iTunes and the desktop and eventually the iPod is free to disconnect.
Then if I try and play the music I just transfered, the iPod says there is no music loaded.
    Ideas?

  • Is there a way to transfer songs from a Sony 16GB MP3 player to an iPod Classic? Tried dragging the songs to iTunes, only accepted 1400 of the songs. MP3 player was full.  I also had compiled the songs in a specific order and iTunes changed order.

The songs from the Sony MP3 player need to be imported into your iTunes library first before they can be synced or added to your iPod Classic.
Regarding the songs that didn't import into iTunes, what format are they in and what seems to be different from them compared with the tracks that did import?

  • Itunes is no longer synching with my ipod classic. I have changed computers a few times. itunes knows it's my ipod, but won't synch. Possibly something I need to do with the network?

I haven't been able to synch for a very long time. I'm finally tired enough of the same music constantly on my ipod that I'm trying again to find some help. I'm computer literate, but not a tech person by any stretch.
According to itunes, I'm not due for a software upgrade until later this month and yet it seems also to reject my request to check for software upgrades. Which seems like there isn't a connection. The fact that it says I'm not due yet makes me think it does happen.
One thing I've gotten lately is the message "itunes isn't my default" and when I go to make it and check everything for itunes and nothing for windows media, nothing changes and I get the message again. This morning I checked "All" and will see if that makes a difference.
I was unable to connect to itunes store until this week. For some reason it worked and I was able to download a movie.
Apple says I have no coverage for help from them -- of course.
    Anyone?

Sorted it out. • I can't sync my iPod classic any longer to itunes on my iMac because it tells me I no longer have the priviledge to make changes? does anyone have a solution to this?

I can no longer sync my iPod classic to my itunes on my iMac because I'm told I no longer have the priviledge to make changes? any ideas?

    Hello Zabagon,
I was looking through our resources for information based on what you are describing here. I found an article that may just get you back up and running, called iTunes: Missing folder or incorrect permissions may prevent authorization found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1277.
    Symptoms
With Mac OS X, the Shared folder is required to authorize your iTunes Store purchases. With Windows the iTunes folder is also required. If either of these folders are missing or have incorrect folder permissions, you may notice one of the following symptoms:
You are unable to complete a purchase from the iTunes Store.
You are told that you do not have permission to modify your iTunes Media folder when downloading from the iTunes Store.
You cannot play content you purchased from the iTunes Store.
An alert appears with the following text:"There was an error storing your authorization information on this computer. The required directory was not found or has a permission error."
    Resolution
    Collapse All | Expand All
    Mac OS X
Log in to your computer using an administrator account.
In the Finder, choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
Type: "/Users" (without quotes) and click Go.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • I keep all of my music on my iPod Classic. I inadvertently changed the sync setting on my iPhone 5 to sync the music with my phone. I am overcapacity and want to remove the music from my phone. How do I do that?

I keep all of my music on my iPod Classic. In error, I changed the sync setting on my iPhone 5 to sync the music with my phone. I am overcapacity on my phone and don't want any music on my phone so I want to remove the music from my phone without disturbing my iTune music files on my PC and iPod. How do I do that?

On your phone: Settings>General>Usage>Music...tap the Edit button...then the red minus sign. This will delete all music on your phone.
