Change of DNS server setting caused Exchange outages!

I am trying to google/bing my way through this, but here are the main points:
All remote Exchange servers had a) static IP addresses and b) were instructed to use DNS servers in Edmonton and Calgary
If WAN links dropped, they lost DNS
SOLUTION! Point remote servers to the domain controller in that location as the primary DNS server. WAN outage means Exchange still resolves names locally.
Well the day came and we add the local DNS server for each remote site as the primary DNS server at the top of "DNS server addresses, in order of use" portion of advanced TCP/IP settings dialogue box.
A reboot is performed
Voila! Exchange shits the bed! Hub transport servers in Edmonton and Calgary cannot resolve remote server names; as in no host(a) record exists for them anymore. And we have a 91 minute outage until the DNS is sorted out (ipconfig /registerdns run on each
server).
Has anyone encountered this or have some deep knowledge of DNS (relative to my own) that could at least throw out a theory as to why this might happen?

Hi, please issue Get-ExchangeServer -Identity "ServerName" -status | fl and check:
CurrentDomainControllers
CurrentGlobalCatalogs
CurrentConfigDomainController
The server must been linked to the wrong server. You can change that in powershell too.

  • Can't change DNS server setting on airport express

new airport express, comcast cable ISP, i cannot change the DNS server settings, they are greyed out.  why  is there no way to change this?

    Mark-
Did you get the AE to actually use the OpenDNS servers?  I have the new AE and Airport Utility 6.3.1 and while I can enter the OpenDNS server settings (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220), they don't work.  When I use a Wi-Fi connected device (my iPhone, for example) it sill uses the Comcast DNS settings, totally ignoring the OpenDNS settings.  I don't know when they stopped working, but they worked in the past.  I've used the old Airport Utility as well (5.6) and it says the OpenDNS settings are active, but they aren't.
I want to use the OpenDNS settings for Wi-Fi connected devices in my home for content filtering.  If anyone knows of a DOCSIS 3 cable modem that allows setting DNS servers, that would be an option too, but unfortunately, my Motorola SurfBoard SBG6580 does not.

  • Pragmatically change the DNS server

I have been trying to figure out how to write a program to change the DNS server, like you can in the control panel. I have played with Resolv.conf and a whole bunch of low level APIs.
From the terminal window, things like nslookup work (use the right dns server) but Safari doesn't. It still is using the original DNS server. I can stop and start safari and go to web pages it has not visited before and it still uses the old DNS server, so its not just pulling up cached pages.
It seems the low-level API stuff doesn't work for higher level applications like Safari (its the only high level app I know of that uses DNS to test with).
What is the API to use to change the DNS server address such that everyone,, like safari, will use the new DNS address?

Yeah, but I am changing all the DHCP entries in the system and it still gets out. However, it is solved by updating the system config. I was just curious as to where it got its DHCP server info from when the system config was blank and resolv.conf was set to my DHCP server.

    Hi All,
This is a critical bug in Windows 7/Windows 2008 and Windows 2008 R2. Is there any way to get rid of it? I am planning for for a deployment with new DNS server IPs.

  • Changing primary DNS server in Unity 10.5

We have a Unity server that has a DNS setting that is no longer valid. I was wondering if it would change the license MAC and invalidate the licenses if I were to change that primary and secondary DNS setting.
    Thanks,
    Jordan

I believe you only need to delete and add again in PLM if you do that, and you're using co-res PLM where you're changing that

  • Changing default DNS Server

    Hi,
I'm a new BT broadband customer.
Like most, I have a house full of pcs and gadgets connecting to the Internet.  Many belong to my children.  Naturally, as a responsible parent, I want to do my utmost to limit their access to inappropriate content.
The basic first line of defence is obviously to have dns filtering.
However, my Home Hub 3 won't let me change the default dns gateway to some filtering service like OpenDNS, nor is there anything to suggest that BTs own dns service has this capability.
Can you please, as a matter of the greatest urgency (I believe that my children are currently able to access the most inappropriate content on their mobile devices), tell me how to get this in place.
    Thanks

Many thanks for the replies on this thread - they are much appreciated, especially the email address.
As I said, I would regard dns filtering as the first line of defence.  And a very necessary one, as my main concern is with my kids wifi connecting mobile devices.
What interests me about all this is that, as people have pointed out, there are ways to set the dns gateway per device.  To my mind that completely undermines any argument for not allowing it to be changed on the HH.
Why might BT want to disable dns setting in the Home Hub?
    i) Because they can then offer valuable dns based services, such as 404 redirection?
But users can override the dns setting on each device!
ii) Because it is one less thing that could be miss-set, so cutting down support calls?
But users can override the dns setting on each device!
iii) Because Government might ask us to ban access to certain sites and controlling the dns lookup would help us do this?
But users can override the dns setting on each device!
Am I missing something here?  Is there actually a really good reason - because I would shut up if there was one!
Meanwhile, my kids remain unprotected for a 3rd day

  • TS3408 What on the Router or DNS server would cause this?

Good information and easy steps to resolve. My question is, what is wrong with my DNS or Router that is causing an issue with Pre-Fetching? An ideas on what would cause the issue?

Not all DNS severs prevent pre fetching.
    Try this...
Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS
    Click + and type:
    208.67.222.222
Click + again and do the same.
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
Or try the terminal command from that link.

  • DNS Changes (Mountain Lion Server & Airport Extreme)

I'm using a Mac Mini Mountain Lion Server with a Airport Extreme Router. The router is currently providing the DHCP funtion. Is it possible to change the DHCP settings on the router to use the DNS server on the Mac Mini Server rather than the one in the router.
I can't see any setting on either the Airport Utility or the Server App I was wondering if the DNS Server setting could be change via the comand line.
    Many Thanks
    Darren

    Hi Darren,
Have you tried putting your Airport Extreme into Bridge Mode? That should enable you to use the DHCP service on your server.

  • Changing DNS Server on Lion OD/Kerberos Master

I have an interesting task ahead of me, but am unsure how best to proceed.
I spent days setting-up my new Lion Server and attached Pegasus RAID array.  There are 140 users, 8 share points, and hundreds of different ACL permutations within the AFP shares that reside on a thunderbolt-attached Pegasus array.  The only services running on the box are DNS, AFP, and OD.
I added a secondary server and intended to use it as an OD replica (redundancy is great, but the speed increase would also be great).  Problem is that I set them both with .local names.  I can't get an OP replica to run unless they are within the same DNS zone, and so that is what I am looking to do.
I have read a lot of Apple support documents and a couple books, and understand that changing the DNS server will likely break OD (certainly Kerberos).
My goal is to re-zone the DNS while preserving OD users, groups, passwords, and most importantly: how they relate to the ACLs on the Pegasus unit (I would very much like to avoid having to re-do all those permissions - particularly within the Lion Server UI).
If I need to do a re-install and then laterally migrate, I certainly can.  I am hoping for the path of least headache to be sure.
If anyone has advise on how to do this as painlessly as possible, I would appreciate it.

Will the OD archive contain the old DNS settings and somehow muck this up?
I don't know the answer to all of your questions but I do know this: If you have an OD archive from a master that had an incorrect hostname, this information was put into your archive.
"Open Directory" is comprised of three components: PasswordServer, LDAPv3 and Kerberos. This is what is backed up during an OD Archive. So if you have a archive from a machine with messed up DNS, I would not trust that everything will be fine after the restore.
Maybe somebody else can chime in and offer you further help...

  • DNS Server change

Forgive me if this has been asked before, I've been searching for an answer and can't seem to find one.
i am using the previous version of iweb and i have just published my site.
I am trying to figure out how to use my registered domain name.
I know i need to change my DNS server but don't know how to find out what the .mac one is..
and if iweb 06 can even do this.
also, when i published my site to my .mac account the first page comes up but none of the other pages that i linked from the main page.
any thoughts or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
    aavalenti

    Hi aavalenti,
For the Domain I'd like you to have a look at the following page
    http://alyeska.altervista.org/en/iWeb_Domains.html
However .mac doesn't provide DNS servers.
For the question about the page and not working links you need to reupload the site from iWeb by making a publish all. Seems like some pages aren't on the server.

  • DNS Server problems with ASA 5505

    Hi guys,
we setup a new ASA 5505 which is mainly used as our VPN gateway. The ASA is configured and controlled by our ISP (and this is where the problem starts )) and they somehow cannot manage to get the VPN settings really working.
    So, here is our problem.
our machines(Windows 7) are configured to get the network settings through DHCP (Windows 2012 Server).
Before I connect with AnyConnect to our VPN gateway, the DNS Server setting in the network settings for the adapters(IPv4) are set to 'dynamic'
When I now connect, this setting is changes to a statc entry (which is our DNS server).
When disconnecting, it is not reverted back, which means I have to do this always manually.
What I do not understand is the fact, that the DNS server is set for all the adapters, shouldtn't it be only set to the anyconnect adapter?.
The interesting thing is, that when I connect to a different ASA, this does not happen. The ISP is now saying, that the machines are configured exactly the same and that they cannot reproduce, but I can't believe this.
This issue shows up at every machine which connects to our vpn, so it is not only a single machine which might be misconfigured.
Do you have any idea what might cause this issue?
btw, the second ASA (which works) is from our partner company, so we cannot simply copy the config
    THanks in advance
    Patrick

Nice to see someone from BT has addressed your issue
I have this exact same problem, seems completely bizarre, I'm pretty sure I had the same problem with the original home hub (i have the latest one now). Can you confirm whether the problem does affect anyone with a bt home hub and not just the one that the dyndns is pointing at? I'll try and confirm by hitting your domain from my home connection.

  • DNS Server Having Intermittent Issues with Open Directory

I work for a school and we're undertaking the large task of moving from Xserves running 10.6.8 to Mac Minis running 10.9. I have a lot of experience with OS X Server (I held ACSA up until they ditched it, and ACTC through the current OS) but I've hit a fairly large snag in configuring our DNS server. We currently run DNS via an AD server that is being retired at the end of the summer, so this is the first time our DNS will be Mac-based. That said, our network is ridiculously simple as we are a very small school. For the most part it's a flat network using the same IP range for our wired and wireless internal clients (we do have a vlan for guests but that's through Aerohive). I configured the DNS by hand, recreating the entries in our AD server (there were only about a dozen) and then adding in things that should have been there in the first place (e.g. printers and some other devices with static IPs that I'd like FQDNs for). Everything seemed to be working fine...until trying to log into Open Directory accounts.
For some background, the DNS server running 10.9 was the first server we upgraded and it was a completely clean install. We run DHCP on another Mac Server currently running 10.6.8 and it does have the proper OD server listed. All DNS entries for the OD server match our current DNS server. The issue is that it's taking some users 5-6 tries to log in with their network accounts. The errors they receive range from the login window shaking to it stating the user cannot log in at this time. This seems to be worse on client machines running 10.9. but it's appearing on machines running 10.6.8-10.9.3.
In my troubleshooting, I found that if I log in as a local user to one of those machines and do a dig for the OD server the results vary, this is where it gets weird. For example, if I dig ourodserver.ourdomain.org it will sometimes return host not found or it will sometimes resolve. If I ping the same thing it will sometimes work (even after stating it cannot resolve the host) and it will sometimes fail. If I then try a dig for the .local (e.g. ourodserver.local) it also yields the same varied results. However, on every machine that I've tested if I then open a Finder window and navigate to the server via the "Shared" menu and connect I have no trouble connecting and then magically my digs and pings in terminal work. If I revert DNS back to point to our old Windows server the issue goes away. I have meticulously combed through that server many many times now and am not seeing any missed entries. Any idea what could be causing this?

You must have a working DNS service, and the server's hostname must match its fully-qualified domain name. To confirm, select the server by name in the sidebar of the Server application window, then select the Overview tab. Click the Edit button on the Host Name line. On the Accessing your Server sheet, Domain Name should be selected. Change the Host Name, if necessary. The server must have at least a three-level name (e.g. "server.yourdomain.com"), and the name must not be in the ".local" top-level domain, which is reserved for Bonjour.
The primary DNS server used by the server must be 127.0.0.1 (that is, itself) unless you're using another server for internal DNS. The only DNS server set on the clients should be the internal one, which they should get from DHCP if applicable.

  • My modem works just fine, but my airport extreme refuses to connect to the internet.  I even reset it more than once, changed the DNS servers and still nothing.  Help

Ok so recently we were having problems with our phone.  We had to disconnect our modem in order to fix the phone lines and when that happened, our airpot extreme disconnected itself from the internet.  No matter what I did i could not get it to connect back.  I would power down the modem, I would reset the AE and nothing would happen.
I tried changing the DNS server and nothing happened.  I always get the same messages in the airport utility app: No internet connection and no DNS server
Nothing I seem to do works.  I do know for a fact though, that the problem is not the modem.  I have connected it through ethernet to other devices and the internet has worked just fine.
Please please please if anybody sees this help me out!!

Since you feel good about having internet access up to your Airport, I would suggest as a next step checking your Airport's status light to see if it is giving any clues as to what may be going on. Below is some info on what the light can indicate
AirPort Express Status light sequences and what they indicate.
No light (Off) - AirPort Express is unplugged
Solid green - AirPort Express is on and working properly.
Flashing amber - AirPort Express is not set up or cannot establish a connection to the network or
the Internet. Use AirPort Utility to find out the cause. See “If Your AirPort Express
Status Light Flashes Amber” on page 20.
Solid amber - AirPort Express is starting up.
Flashing amber and green - There may be a problem starting up. AirPort Express will restart

  • Dns problems setting up profile manager

i have been experimenting setting up OS X Server (10.8) on a new Mac mini on a network with Time Capsule.   server's host name is "server.me.private" at IP address 192.168.1.100 , Time Machine DHCP server address is 192.168.1.1 .
Open Directory and Profile Manger are on in Server.app.  (Profile Management: Enabled, Signing config profiles using the Apple Certified Push Certificate, w/ Apple push notifications on in Server settings.)
I can not, however, get Profile Manager to open and connect in a browser using "server.me.private/profilemanager" from either the mini itself or from another mac on the nework.  i can get a brower to connect to Profile Manager using "192.168.1.100/profilemanager" but after successfully logging in, the browser is redirected to a "server.me.private/..."  address and shows connection failure.
i HAVE gotten a browser to connect and function properly by changing the DNS Server in the the Network System Preferences on that specific Mac from "192.168.1.1" to "192.168.1.100".  (DNS in Server.app, for the record is also on in this instance, forwarding server to 192.168.1.1 )  this, howerver, is a pain and also doesn't work trying to connect an iOS device.
i'm definitely missing something here.  it seems to me that the Time Capsule should remain the DNS Server for the network and forward "server.me.private" to "192.168.1.100".  it is not doing this, and there are no options for setting this with Airport Utility.
some light on this subject would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks very much!

thanks very much for your thoughts and reply, Thomas.
if i were to change the Time Capsule to use the Mini as the primary DNS server, is this where i'd do it in Airport Utility?
but it won't let me change the DNS Servers fields here.  and if i can change the DNS Serever to my Mini's 192.168.1.100, what address should i keep for the second DNS Server?
    Thanks again!
