Change of file type

I have a fair amount of picture files either stored as TIFF or JPEG in various subfolders. Since I upgraded to Tiger 10.4.3 (I believe but am not sure, anyway since recently) some of the files appear randomly in Finder as a "Unix executable file". Note that these false false types appear among other picture file with the correct file type!
I have, for other reasons, repaired permissions but do not see a reason why this would change a file type.
Since these files are older scanned family pictures from the last and previous century I am most interested to know how this could have happened and whether there is a way to revert the file type back so I can use them for inclusion in a family document and processing (in Adobe PS Elements for example)??
Thank you for any helpful suggestion.

Filetypes are assigned via metadata or extender. In the PC and *nix world the extender (.JPG, .DOC, .GIF) indicate what kind of data the file holds and, by extension, what icon the Finder should display for it. Traditionally, the Mac world has depended on metadata, information contained within the file, that not only indicates what kind of file it is, but what program created it. OS X has somewhat muddied the picture for we Mac users. For a time it appeared Apple intended to do away with metadata and depend on extenders. However it now appears that metadata is on the ascendancy again.
I'm not sure what happened to your files but I'm fairly certain of two things: those files didn't have any extender (or an invalid one) and also either had no metadata or it was damaged.

  • Page Snapshot on Mac using Shift+Command+4, can I change the file type?

Is there a way to have this feature save the screen shot as a .jpg or something other than .png?
    Thanks for The help!

Actually you can change the file type, using a defaults write command in Terminal. Whatever you select changes the file type for all screenshots until/unless you globally change it again. All OnyX does is run this command in the program's interface--if you don't know how to use Terminal you may prefer this. If you want to use Terminal, you would launch it, then copy this command:
    defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg
Paste it into the Terminal window and then press the Return key. I believe you need to restart for the change to take effect.

  • Best point to change picture file type

Is there any way of changing camera file type from JPG to say PNG at the point of import the pictures from my camera to Elements Organizer.  As far I know the camera only sends jpeg format.  It seems like a long way to have to bring them all in to organizer, pass them to edit and resave each file individually as a changed file type?  If someone can give me a better way I would certainly appreciate the information.

At import, you cannot change file types.
It is not clear why you want photos to be .png files. As I understand things, .png files are not a good choice for photographs.
Nevertheless, you can change file types in bulk via the Editor command File->Process Multiple Files. Again, I honestly don't think you are gaining anything by changing .jpg files to something else, so unless you have reasons that I have never heard, I would advise that you leave them as .jpg.

how to change the file type from IMOVIE PROJECT to other types of file??
thank you very much for your help=]

I am not sure what you mean, but once you make a project. Then go to the share menu and you can export the project to iDVD, itunes, mobileme, quicktime.
Share export quicktime movie will allow you to export to a variety of codecs. What specific export are you looking to share the movie in? What is the final source that the movie will be displayed?

  • I uploaded and edited my RAW image, clicked 'Save As', and changed the file type from .psed to .jpg.

I edited my raw image in Photoshop CS6, selected 'Save As', and changed the file type from .psed to .jpg. I also selected 12 and large file when the window popped up, concluding my 'saving as'. My computer does not recognize the file type and won't open them. Can someone help me? Thanks!

When naming files, stick to the letters of the ENGLISH alphabet, numbers and underscores.  Do not use illegal characters like apostrophes, commas, asterisks, ampersands, hatch or pound signs, diacritics or accented characters, slashes, etc.
While the period (dot) is not an illegal character per se, your file names should have only one period and that should always be followed by the file type extension.

  • When replacing an .indd on creative cloud, it changes the file-type

I have uploaded a few InDesign (.indd) files from cs5.5 to my creative cloud account so I can share them with my team for approval / feedback. If I try and replace the file with a newer version (still .indd from cs5.5) it changes the file type to octet-stream and it can't be viewed.
Restoring back to the ORIGINAL version brings back the original, as an indesign file, and it is viewable again.
Am I doing something wrong when replacing a file? This seems like the logical way of doing it (they even refer to them as revisions, as that seems to be the point)

My workplace uses CS5.5. I'm in the process of convincing them to move to CC by personally signing up to the month/month plan (however this isn't helping).
I am uploading using Chrome Version 29.0.1547.66 m.

  • Newbie stuck - how do I change the file type of a photo I am formatting from a TIFF to a JPG?

I am new to Aperture and struggling to figure out some of the basics, even with the tutorials.  I need to submit a photo for an art competition - the master is a TIFF and I need a JPG under 1.8 MB - how do I change the new version's file type and keep it with the master?
    Thank you in advance.

I can't recommend the method proposed by Carolyn Samit; in fact, I recommend ignoring it.
Aperture is large, complex, and can take some time to learn to use.  It is also quite powerful, and can handle nearly all -- or all -- common tasks you throw at it.
I have written a very short guide to Aperture which was intended to provide some firm footing for those getting started.  I humbly suggest that you start with a quick review.
One of the things that presents a bit of disorientation for new users is that, in practice, Aperture keeps your pictures in a kind of limbo.  There are good reasons for this -- suffice it for now to accept that you import image-format digital files into Aperture, you use Aperture to organize and optimize these as Images, and then when need a file to use outside of Aperture, you export you Image.  It is at export that you format your Image: you select the file type, the compression amount, the file name, the file size, and more.
In your case, then, you will export your Version, and set the file type to TIFF (recommended above JGP whenever quality is paramount). There is no way to know the file size in bytes prior to creating it.  Start with a full-size TIFF and, if necessary, knock it down by percentage until the exported file is less than 1.8 MB.
There is no reason to attempt to keep this file with the Image in Aperture.  Send it on its way.  Any time you need another file from your Image, you can create it fresh via "File→Export→Version".
HTH.  If it doesn't, ask more.

  • Change default file types

I have been using Adobe Acrobat to view PDF's and it stoped working correctly. I have decided to use Preview because I don't tend to use Adobe's advanced features. But, I can't seem to get Finder to stop associating the PDF file type with Adobe Acrobat. I tried deleting Adobe Acrobat but Finder simply will not open PDF files. I tried the open with....and checking always use this as a default application, but it doesn't work. Is there some file or app that can edit file types and default applications?
    Thanks,
    Lee

Your personal preferences for applications/files associations are stored here:
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist"
If that file has become corrupt then it wouldn't reflect the change you wish to make. Try moving it to the Desktop, log out and back in and try again.
Additionally, these cache files are generated by system, specifying general application/file associations, and can also become corrupt:
    "/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-014501.csstore"
    "/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-0140.csstore"
If you have additional users there will be additional csstore files, one for each user. They can also be moved to the Desktop. A restart will cause the system to create new ones.

  • Change Default File Type in PSE 9?

    Hi
I recently installed PSE 9 and am a new user.  I import file from my camera in raw format, and did a smart fix edit from the organiser workspace.  the first time I did it, it cam up with a dialogue box asking what type of file I wanted to save the version as, to which I replied TIFF.
I then inadvertently ticked the don't ask me this again box and now it is saving everything as a TIFF file when I do a smart fix.
How can I change this to a different file type, as I wanted a 1 off TIFF file?

In the pse 9 organizer, go to Edit>Preferences>General and
click on Reset All Warning Dialogs.

  • Question about changing a file type into another file type

Hello. This isnt a java question but you guys have been so helpful in the past I hope its ok if I ask this question for a friend.
How can I import a scriptware file into Screenwriter 2000, or change a .scw file into a .tag file?
    Anyone who can help thanks.

I know nothing about scriptware or Screenwriter. But, my only advice is to see if Scriptware can export some other file type (not necessarily a .scw file) that Screenwriter can read. Sometimes, when I have two text editors whose native formats are incompatible (like opening a paper typed in a new version of Microsoft Word using an old version of WordPerfect or something), I save the file as an RTF file, rather than in the native format. Maybe something like that applies to your situation, too.
    Hope that helps.

  • Changing a file type that will not open

sorry if this is  a super simple question but I poked around and can't figure it out. Some time back I rented a Nikon scanner and scanned and saved a bunch of my images to my hardrive. I can see the thumbnails of said photos plain as day. When I try and open said photos in Bridge of PS5.1 it wants to open the file in conjunction with the scanner for some reason. When I click to open an image the icon box from the scanner software pops up as if it is loading then the error message box comes up to say : 'The application Nikon Scan 4 quit' unexpectedly giving the option to Ignore/Report/Relaunch -  In any case - it wants to open the Tiff files I have saved through the Nikon Scan 4. I don't get it as to why that is but in any case I would imagine I just have to save as another file type? When I look to see the type of file it is : 'nikon scan Tiff file'
Because I CAN see the thumbnails in Bridge all I need to do is change the type of file but I see no way to do it as it is not currently saved as any file name suffix - the name of the file is not .jpeg or .tiff - it simply does not have any file type currently associated with them

'The application Nikon Scan 4 quit' unexpectedly giving the option to Ignore/Report/Relaunch -  In any case - it wants to open the Tiff files I have saved through the Nikon Scan 4.
You should also check Bridge Preferences File type association. See what the default application to open in is for the tif files. If this is Nikon change it to PS and it should work.
It might be that when having used the Nikon software there was an option to hide the extension selected.
Any way, first duplicate one file and try to add tif as Tai Lao stated in his post and try if that is working.

  • Script to override Group policy (Disable Addins and change default file type)

    Hi there,
I am developing a solution for our customer that requires Office 2010 64-bit, which I have.
However my company's group policy, (I believe), keeps adding in a template manager for corporate documents, this template is 32-bit and is incompatible with my version of office. This means that everytime I open or close excel I get a warning of incompatibility.
This is irritating, as is the fact that the default new file type keeps switching back of xls, which causes me problems since my macro's need to create xlsx files, for the customer.
Now I believe that both of these are set by the group policy and while they a fine for most people, due to my unusual roll, it causes me irritations I would would rather avoid.
Since I know it will not be possible to change the group policy for the handful of people who are effected like this, I am looking for some help to, e.g. automatically run a script to adjust these settings on my local machine to make my life easier.
    Thanks for your help,
    Vincent.

    Try using
Process Monitor for looking the key.
For example, you may set the required value through the group policy and see what windows registry keys are changed.

  • Changing Track File Type

    Hi there,
How would you be able to change a track's file type or download from iTunes as a different file type? If possible, I'm aiming for .wma and/or .mp3 types.

    Thank you.
Almost all music stores sell their downloads in MP3 format. The only exceptions that I am aware of are 4ad.com and the iTunes Store. If you buy from amazon.com or any of the others you will be getting MP3s and will not have to convert.
If your iTunes library has any files in odd formats that you wish to convert to MP3, you can follow the instructions in this support article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1550
