Change permission info of all music files.

Hi there,
I dont know if this is supposed to be in the iTunes section or here but this seemed the better place.
The problem is, I cant edit the song info of a LOT of songs in my iTunes playlist wich I copied from my pc to my macbook by external hdd.
The problem is, all the songs and maps the songs are in are read only and the only thing that works is editing every single music file and map.
Since I've got over 3000 songs in over 400 maps... I dont want to do every file by itself.
Now I dont have a lot of knowledge about how a mac works, its kind of new to me so I hope theres just a simple solution.
Ive tried copying the iTunes folder and use the copy but then Ill get some weird error that I cant write on my HDD when I try to add the music to my iTunes library.
I downloaded batChmod but I dont uderstand it so I dont have the guts to use it well.
Please somebody help me with this, I bought all my music legally so I want my whole library to look clean, there are some stupid things wich I cant stand ('disc 1' and 'CD2') and I just cannot change without editting for 30 minutes.
Thanks!

Close iTunes. In the top-most folder containing all your music (probably a folder called "iTunes"), select the folder and choose File->Get Info from the menu. In the Get Info window, expand the Sharing & Permissions section towards the bottom. Unlock the orange lock if it's locked. Make sure you (Me) can Read & Write, and by default everyone else should be Read only. Click the little gear pull-down menu below and choose "Apply to enclosed items".

  • After a backup all music files are invisible and iTunes don't see anything

    Hi,
I got a very strange problem and I'm really lost.
I made a backup of my portable iTunes libray (using a 160 GB Maxtor one touch 4 mini usb) on another backup disk (750 GB Maxtor onetouch III firwire 800). I have my library on a external disk to safe disk space on my MacBook Pro disk. For the back up I use the software Personal Backu4 of Intego Software. The 160GB iTunes disk is Formatted als Mac OS Extended format.
Now all back up data that aren't music files (AAC or MP3 files) was correctly back up, but all music files was like deleted, all artist > album folders looks empty. But, cheking with the disk utility it looks that all files exist and the Used space (36.06 GB) looks correctly and the numbers of files too (some 5942 files). But all files are invisible, folders looks empty. Now is looks that all purchased and CD imported int my library didn't exist anymore: and this in BOTH disks, side by side is the same situation.
How I can come out from this situation, I really don't have any idea how to coming out fron this sad situation.
Hany help is really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

OK, here's what REALLY doesn't make sense.
After manually fixing a lost file, NOTHING in the XML changes. Not one single character changes in the XML file. I diff'd the whole file before and after - no difference. So, basically, it goes out and 'finds' it and updates something that we can't see to repair the connection, meanwhile we are left to think that this XML file has the library data in it.
Mind you, the media file(s) are present and accounted for in the file system - correct name and path and everything - before and after I go Locate the file when iTunes complains about it being missing..
iTunes is so overbloated, we can't even fix stuff when we see precisely how it is broken.

  • Find all music files and move to one folder for all of family to access, find all music files and move to one folder for all of family to access

I seem to have music files in various places on my laptop, on my husbands computer and our main imac.  What we want to do is put all music on imac so when each of us logs on we have the same files availabe in itunes, but we logon seperately so we can have different playlists and checked music. So here is what I want to do:
Find all music files on each computer seperately and put everything in one folder one each computer, so three folders total to start...
Move my husbands itunes library and my itunes library from each of our laptops to our main imac, making one huge itunes folder
I want to store our music on an external hard drive, which I have, so I have a full library for backup purposes.
I want all future music downloaded on any of our laptops to transfer to the main imac computer, again to keep one main library
I want all video, apps, books, etc on each laptop to be available in one file on my main imac also so we can all use them
So mainly I want to organize, organize, organize and put everything in one spot so things don't get all messed up and some items are only accessible to me some times and not my husband or vice versa.  We want to share everything we can so we don't have to pay twice. I have read many instuctions, but nothing seems to be helping me and was hoping someone could...
    Thanks, l

I am totally running into the same issue as well. On top of that, when syncing to my iPhone, it took some of the tracks from my iphone and recopied them to the iTunes library, as new files, so now I have a ton of duplicates, and tons of tracks that can't find the iTunes folder, so they have the little "!" next to them.
It would be really nice to have someone answer this question. I didn't think, moving my iTunes library to a bigger external hard drive would have caused all this madness

  • New version of ITunes installed - Not all music files are being recognized

My system crashed and Itunes was automatically 're-installed.' My music is located on my external hard drive. When I reconnected my music to ITunes about 3000 music files did not appear in my library. Before the re-install all music files were available in the library.
The music files are all still located on my external hard drive. Strangely, when I copied my music on my external hard drive to create yet another back up of my music many music files were missing on the copy. The missing files were a combination of downloaded music from a cd and purchased, no trend.
I welcome any advice on how I can get 1. my ITunes library to read all of my music files (which are in ITunes format) and 2. how do I copy all of my music on my external hard drive to make a safe back up (I-tunes back up is not an option because not all of the music appears in my library)
    Thanks for your help

  • Media Transfer 1.41 deletes all music files

When i updated media transfer to 1.41 this problem apeared:
it first deletes all music files on the phone before it syncs them.
If i sync one mp3 file it takes 1-2 hours for media sync to first delete all files ant then copy all files to the phone.
(I have over 4gig of music on my memory card.)
I did not have this problem with the 1.4 version.

I have a few comments/bug reports (I have also submitted these through the app).
    BUGS:
    1. The app seems to force conversion of perfectly normal AAC files created in iTunes (.m4a). The files are converted to... AAC!!!
There is no need for this conversion as the files play fine on the phone (N95)
Both files created with iTunes standard ACC settings and with a custom VBR settings are converted.
MP3 files are transferred without conversion.
    2. Bookmarked AAC files (.m4b) are not converted or transferred (they are ignored) - many podcasts use this format and they play fine in iTunes and QuickTime.
(Edit - it seems iTunes and OS X treat these files as protected, even though they are not - also the N95 will not play the files if copied without conversion).
    FEATURE/ENHANCEMENT REQUESTS:
    1. User prefence for caching - I have a 4GB memory card and may not be interested in having everything on it cached on my computer. When using USB2 the connection should be fast enough for viewing/streaming from the phone.
    2. The viewing in the browser is a bit confusing - when e.g. the memory card is selected it shows a lot of different files from different folders (I have TOMTOM maps on the card so a lot of useless files are showing) It would be nice to either be able to select which files are shown, or just make the browser work normally, so it is only showing files in the current folder (selecting the memory card would show the root folder).
    3. Options for conversions (e.g. "Do not convert files with a bitrate below xxx kbps").
I look forward to the next version - if the 2 bugs are fixed this is already a very solid app.
Great to see real OS X support.Message Edited by peter321 on 09-Jun-200707:31 PM

  • 7.0.2 How to view all music files on iPod

I upgraded my iTunes version on my Mac and now I am having some issues deleting songs off a playlist. Basically I have a podcast playlist and then I just have all my music dumped on the iPod not on a playlist. After I had finished listening to a bunch of the podcasts in my podcast playlist I would click on the iPod device in iTunes Source Tree and then I would see all music files on my iPod including podcasts. I could then delete them when I am ready. Now with 7.0.2 if I click on iPod I get the new fancy display showing my iPod Stats and stuff. If I click on my podcast playlist and delete the files it removes them from the playlist but they still actually reside on my iPod and no space is freed. How can I remove files off my iPod now in 7.0.2? I had iTunes 6.0 on a Windows machine and I was able to actually get the files off using the old version but I don't have access to this Windows machine too often so I really want to figure out how to remove files off a playlist permanently and gain access in iTunes to remove any files not associated with a playlist.

Hey thanks for replying. That is the way the old iTunes did it but now any songs I move to my Podcast playlist I don't see show up in my Music category. I was using clicking on the chevron for Music but it still doesn't show any new files placed into my Podcast Playlist. If I sort by date added or modified I can't find them. If I search thru all the songs I still can't find the podcast files. I have an old 3G 20GB, I wonder if it is an issue with them because I can't believe nobody else has this issue.

  • I have the new iPhone 4s.  I'm using cloud.  I try to sync my playlists to my phone an it either erases them completely or keeps saying it cannot move all music files over?  Please help.  Also my purchased ringtones will not sync up as well.

I have the new iPhone 4s.  I'm using cloud.  I try to sync my playlists to my phone an it either erases them completely or keeps saying it cannot move all music files over?  Please help.  Also my purchased ringtones will not sync up as well.

iPod touches or any iDevices from Apple sync only to one computer. If you sync to a different computer, all your music will be replace with the music from the new computer's iTunes. If the music were purchased from iTunes, you can re-download them again otherwise the music on iPod touch will be deleted. Do you have iTunes backup?

  • Trying to backup ipod all music files changed to undf. format. Now I can't see them on ipod or itunes

I am not very tech savy, so when my computer died I tried to backup music files from ipod. The "other" had grown gigantic, and it said to restore it. But I knew that I had to save the files first. New ITunes wouldn't find them, so I tried other software. Now the music files are still on the ipod, but I can't see them or play them! Tried playing with VLC media player, it says it can't play because they are now undf. format. I know I need to convert them to something, but I have no idea how. I don't understand tags and such, but I do believe there are programs to reformat files? Please help! Keep it simple, as I am in my 60's and not very sharp about such things.

How do I enable it for hard drive use?
    My story goes thus:
Put movie on iPod hard drive to get it to my laptop (from desktop at home.)
Can watch movie on computer using iPod as an external hard drive. all good, but the iPod can't play it.
So I take the movie off the iPod and onto my Laptop, and use iTunes to put it onto the iPod.
Now the iPod will play the movie but if I go through "my computer" to the iPod, I can't see the files on there. what if I want to watch it at a friends house? Or on my own laptop. I don't want an iPod copy and a hard drive copy on my player, that halves the memory!
Is there some kind of softwre or setting I can use that lets me access the files on there for other use? I've got about 3gig of music on there so far, I know it's on there as it plays fine, but if I'm going to be jumping between 2 or 3 computers, I'd just like access to my files.
I don't want 2 or 3 copies of a movie, it takes up too much space.
    Looks like I need
A: 1 copy on the hard drive to play through Itunes,
B: a Second on the iPod to play round a friends house (or on my own Laptop, negating the need for "A") as a hard drive file, and
C: a Final 3rd copy also on the iPod for it to play itself, which it hides from "My computer"
If I could just get access to "C" through My computer I wouldn't need the first two (it's not a sync problem like someone suggested)
Why have apple made this so impossible?
My last MP3 player, you just copy and pasted the file. It was more like portable hard drive/memory that could also play the MP3 files that were on it.

  • ITUNES DOES NOT PLAY ALL MUSIC FILES AFTER DATA RECOVERY

My external Iomega Firewire 160gig HD, all of a sudden, changed the drive letter from H to F with unknown format.
I recovered music files ( Using Stellar Phoenix FAT)and files/folders are in iTunes but only 20-30 play (out of over 6,000)
I can play CD and rip new music in iTunes, though.
Any suggestions how to get my music play all library files??
    Dell   Windows XP   Media center

    WiseBird,
There might be several causes for that kind of erratic behaviour:
1st use Disk Utility to check your internal disk as well as the external one.
2nd Your Library database might be damaged
    - Quit iTunes
    - Goto ./Users/YourUserName/Music/iTunes
There will 2 files named something "Library" - move them to your desktop
    - Launch iTunes
As you're now starting from scratch, iTunes will offer to search for audio tracks - Don't let it.
    - Your iTunes should be "clean"
    - in iTunes Preferences - Advanced - General:
Point the Music Folder Location to the appropriate folder on your ext hd
Disable "Copy Files to iTunes music folder....."
    - Quit Preferences
    - From iTunes Menu - File choose "Add to library..." + select that folder on your ext hd that contains all your tracks.
    - All your tracks should be back by now in iTunes Library.
    - To get your playlists back: From iTunes Menu - File choose "Import" and open that .xml file that you moved to your desktop (might work but need not).

  • All music files vanish when battery runs out

I bought a 60GB iPod six weeks ago. I use it a lot and as expected have had to charge the battery a few times.
The last two times the battery has run out the clock resets to 1 January 2000 and all the music files disappear.
The music files are still there (I've loaded 45GB so far and the disk capacity shows this) but don't appear or become playable until I next synch with iTunes.
While this isn't a huge problem, it is very frustrating - the first time it happened I was a few days into a 2-week holiday and, not being able to take my PC with me, spent the rest of the trip without music.
Any advice, besides buying a laptop?
    Thanks,
    Ian

    Hi Ian,
Just curious - are you using iTunes 6? In any event, a Restore will probably correct the problem. BTW, I'm not an expert on batteries, but I think I've read that you shouldn't let it run completely out. Here's a bunch of links on the topic:

  • Changed account name and old music files no longer can play

I changed my account name to an e-mail address that I currently use. since I moved the old one I could no longer access any longer. Well they have a feature to do that so I took it so it would be easier to remember the account and password. thing is since I changed none of the songs that I purchased with the old account name can be played any longer. they need to be Reauthorized.
No biggie right just type in the old account name and password and I'll be on my way. Wrong :P
According to the music store the old account does not exist. Well of course not that is because I changed it. I check to see my account history under the NEW account and it has all the files I ever downloaded since I first installed iTunes! If this is the case why on earth can I not play the files purchased under my old account under the new accounts name! did I make a mistake by not deauthroizing my computer before changing account? because it is not mentioned in the instructions to do so! Grrr... normally I'd just say oh well but it's most of my iTunes library!
    Pleas help!

    Problem Resolved!
I was sent back an e-mail stating that I did not make a second account but changed my account name from (accounts will be withheld for security) one to the other. Problem?
Files downloaded from the other account name would not work with the one that I was currently using.
Issues further complicating the matter. My computer recently was having Power supply issues and I reformated my computer several times. Not realizing that this left iTunes Music store saying that I had 5 computers authorized on my account because I had not deauthorized any of the computers each time. Couldn't really, windows crashed out and I couldn't get to it. So when I got everything ironed out on my computer. I couldn't play any of my songs becaus I had reached maximum authorizations! even Deauthorizing and reauthorizing didn't work.
Solution:: Login to your (working) account and go to your account summary. Click on the button that says "Deauthorize ALL computers" This will wipe all computers that you had associated with your account to play your songs. Not that big of deal because all you have to do is log back in. (BIG deal to ppl that don't know your password, which they shouldn't be playing yoru songs anyway!)
Once I resetted my authorization on all computers and logged back in everything was fine.
Now I think the tech that sent me the e-mail did do one thing for me. He must have enabled my old account I used to have and linked it to my current one. Because instead of my old account saying it does not exist it says it works now! yet I still login to and access my account with my new e-mail account!
So even though I would like to say everything was within my power to do myself the whole time. That is not the case. The tech did help me associate the two accounts from withing iTunes. So I can now listen to my songs at anytime I want and not be told I have 5+ computers when I only own 2 LOL

  • Help ! All music files disappeared at once on 5G 80Giga

    Hi,
All my music files on the new iPod 80G disappeared at once from the iPod when I tried to sync a video from the Movies Tab in iTunes 7. No warning message, nothing. iTunes hanged up twice (did a soft Escape to get out of the rainbow wheel of death). When I opened the iPod, POUF, all was gone, and for good, it seems. More than 55 gig of music files went down the drain (no, they were not on iTunes on the computer... Hard disk space is too scarce to spend 50 gigs only on music).
What happened? I tried to recover the files using Disk Utility (no problem found). I tried to get rid of a potentially corrupted iTunesDB (didn't do anything to make the music files reappear on the iPod). The general info notes that the iPod unused space is now more than 73 Giga, whilst it was 75% full before the crash. I can't believe 55Gig of files can be erased in less than 2 minutes. They must be somewhere on the iPod drive but TechTool Pro and Drive Genius didn't find anything (Drive Genius reports a corrupted HFS+: rror : Read error whilst trying to read the Wrapper Master Directory Block
Error : Read error whilst trying to read the HFS+ Volume Header block
Error : Invalid HFS+ signature found in the volume header (0000 - ).

Beside the disappeared music files. All the other iPod functions work as usual.
Any idea how to get my music back?

    That's correct.
If you want to move them permanently over, follow this article to copy your Itunes folder over:
iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751
After you have moved, you may go and look under this iTunes folder structure and check if your movies and Music  are there:
If you music are stored at a different location, you have to move them to the same location on your new drive as well.

How do I transfer music files from my laptop to my Ipod Touch?

The only way to get it fixed is to contact the carrier to whom the phone is locked.  You will need to find out:
    1) IF the carrier offers unlocking.  Not all carriers do
    2) IF the carrier indeed offers unlocking, what the requirements are.  You might not fulfill them.

  • My time capsule change the time on ALL my files by one hour.

On the 29th December all the files on my time capsule went out of sync with my mac by one hour. I use it for backup. I have other backups on a Lacie drive and these were all OK but because it went forward in time my syncronise software saw them all as changes and started copying from the time capsule to my iMac. I stopped it and after recovering the damage it had done I proceeded to copy ALL my data back to the time capsule to reset the syncronise error.
Its been OK since then but this morning it all went wrong again. It started by my backup failing because the network share was not accessable so I went into my backup scripts(chronosync) and reselected the backup drive. I then did a trial sync and lo and behold the whole lot is back out of sync again and this time they have gone back in time.
Did we enter British summer time in the middle of winter or did the earth tilt on its access and caused the UK to be in The NEtherlands? Or did Apple do something that I cant resolve.
Anyone else having similar problems? Ive been googling this and thought I had found it by installing Airport Uitlity 5.6 but I cant do that as I have upgraded all my machines to MOuntain Lion and its not compatible. I think on 5.6 you can adjust the time zone setting.
I need to tell the time capsule which time zone it is in and all shoudl be OK

    Bob
Thanks for that   - Airport utility 5.6 is now working but I cannot see anything wrong. It possibly went wrong on the 29th December and has just gone back to normal again so I think I will have to let the backup recopy all the files.
I looked in the logs and found
No Address for NTP server time.apple.com. and then on Jan 08 at 09:49:38 I got
Clock synchronized to network time server time.apple.com (adjusted +3597 seconds). (thats my hour!!!)
Question no is why - could be a DNS problem but why on the 29th and back on the 8th Jan.
Nothing changed in my network router, maybe something at the ISP.
Anyway now copying all the data back to the time capsule.
By the way I have my DNS as my router 192.168.1.1 and 208.67.222.222 - when I look at my router the DNS is 8.8.8.8 and 4.4.4.4 which is what my ISP told me to use. Maybe I should put 8.8.8.8 and 4.4.4.4 in the DNS for the time capsule?

  • Last iTunes update 10.2.2.12 deleted all music files and all artwork

Within the last month I got a notice to upgrade Apple iTunes and Quicktime software which I did not thinking anything about it.  I have used myiPod since then but not in iTunes at all and no synching.  I have about 225 CD's loaded in iTunes plus some other music from Home Sharing that my son/daughter bought with our account in the iTunes store.  I recently got a new double CD requested for my birthday and decided to load it into iTunes and on my computer.  It had problems automatically recognizing the CD so I checked all the settings and they were correct rebooted my computer and one CD loaded not the other and had to reboot again to get the second to load.  But also I noticed ALL ALBUM ARTWORK was gone.  Both the album artwork I got from Apple and the Album artwork I loaded (the bulk of my CD's are older CD's so the Apple iTunes store does not have the artwork typically) was missing.  I thought that was a little odd but iTunes has done this before after updates but usually ONLY with the album artwork I loaded being missing.  In any case I tried Get Artwork via the iTunes sote and got error messages that Album artwork could not load.  I also then tried to load the artwork manually and iTunes music library rejected it.  Then I tried to play a song listed.  It said the song is not there.  Now all of my music is listed in my iTunes library, but apparently NONE of it is actually there.  I go to where iTuens Music Library and sure enough only the last 4 CD's are there.  Apparently the last Apple Update deleted all the music files, and all the artwork with it, yet still lists them in iTunes but they are nowhere to be found.  Before I go into my backup files on an external hard drive, it appears others are having this issue too, and I am wondering if anyone has actually got a simple fix from Apple or not.  .

Follow up - I could not locate any of the files on my "c" drive of my laptop.  Realizing that I am gonna probably have to reload everything from my external hard drive backup I went ahead and just started the process.  I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes software, which turned out to NOT be required at all as when I reopened iTunes all of the music files were again listed just as before but none of them were actually there or the artwork.  I then copied all the music files/folders over into the iTunes music folder and about 90% of them then showed up with about 98% of the artwork.  The other 10% just had to be matched up as the music was there but iTunes was not looking in the right location for it now, most likely different folder names.  So after about 6 hours I am back to having everything back on the computer and reorganized again.  I am now going to back up again (in multiple locations - 2 hard drives and I may add a flash drive backup too) and then do the inevitable scary Apple sync.  I find it funny that with other company's software that syncs, it actually syncs, where Apple sync software seems to look for items to delete from one source or the other during its sync. They really should rename it because it is not a true "sync".  In any case I was happy and surprised to find that about 98% of the artwork came through with the music which never used to happen in the past, so that saved a lot of time to say the least.  To anyone who ever does anything with Apple or Windows software updates, all I can say from years of experience now is backup, backup, backup, and backup prior to updating.
