Change pixel aspect ratio

Hi all,
My school requires me to produce all my videos in a format of 768px by 576px, square pixels, PAL format.  I need to know how to change the pixel aspect ratio to 768x576 with the standard PAL format and square pixels.  I can see that when you start a project you can set the size, but the boxes that contain the pixel size are shadowed out and I can't select them to change them. I have also tried to modify the project after it was created, using project settings and sequence settings, but again, I was not able to select the boxes that included the pixel aspect ratio.
Please help soon, as my project is due within hours.

My source material is 768x576 animations from Maya.  The output needs to be .avi format, but it's not going onto a DVD or a DV tape or a web video, it just needs to be uploaded to my instructor's computer.
I am trying to export a file with the correct aspect ratio now.  I set the output to codec=none, and changed the aspect ratio to 768x576.  It seems unable to output the file, as I have tried four times and it has given me an error each time.  Is a codec necessary?  Is that what's freaking it out?
Also, the final video will only be 2:28 long, and I have set the scratch disk to a drive on my computer that has 78 GB free, so I hope it is not running out of processing space.
Thank you for your help and patience with this problem.  I'm not sure I get the reason for the format myself, which is probably why I'm having trouble explaining why this is so important.  However, my instructor told us numerous times that we absolutely had to have a final file that was 768x576, so I figured I had to make every effort to get it done that way.

  • Changing pixel aspect ratio during cropping (LR3.2)

When I crop sometimes the pixel aspect ratio changes here. I.e. the pic get stretched in horizontal or vertical way/or compressed. Any body seeing this also? After some time it does change to normal, but it makes cropping rather difficult when in a hurry.

I'm not sure I understand your problem, but I think what bothers you is the technique that has been in place in LR2 already for switching between landscape and potrait format of the crop, which in LR3 can be acomplished by the X keyboard shortcut.
Moving your mouse horizontally or vertically on a locked aspect ratio, the format will change from portrait to landscape or vice versa. To enlarge or diminish the size of the crop, you have to move the mouse diagonally.

  • Changing Pixel Aspect Ratio with Aperture

i was wondering if aperture has a way of changing the pixel aspect ratio from square to DI/DV NTSC or HDV. so far i am using photoshop to do that but would love to do it inside aperture.

Not that I'm aware of. Pixels are pixels to Aperture. You could always crop your images to the right aspect ratio.
If you're looking to burn photos to DVD perhaps iDVD or DVD Studio Pro could resize your images to the proper size.

  • Change Pixel Aspect Ratio Once Already Started?

I've been having trouble with my video looking extremely blurry -- I thought it had to do with rendering but it looks the same rendered as it did before rendering. I think I figured out that it has to do with the pixel aspect ratio being too small (or is it frame size, or are those the same thing? It's all very confusing for me!). The final output for this video is YouTube, but it also looks blurry within Premiere (mainly when stretching the Program Monitor so I can see it larger).
I helped on a video a few months ago that looked perfect, everything was really crisp in Premiere (after rendering, that is) and when exported to YT. The pixel aspect ratio was 1920x1080 for this video, and the one I'm working on now is 720x480.
So, can I enhance the pixel aspect ratio of the video I'm working on now? If I'm not able to change the pixel aspect ratio once I've started the project, what would be your advice going forward?
Thanks, and please let me know if you need any more information!

You need to be sure your sequence setting matches
the frame size and aspect ratio of your source media.
To create a sequence that matches your footage, try this:
Once you have created a properly configured sequence,
you can copy (Ctrl+C) then paste (Ctrl+V) your already edited
clips into the newly created sequence.

  • How do i change pixel aspect ratio of an image in elements9?

My camera only shoots in one format ratio, i would like to change images to 2:1, or 1:2. Without cropping or letterboxing. (Hence i think it is the 'pixel' aspect ratio i need to alter, not the 'picture' aspect ratio). Is this possible in elements or is it something else i can't do in elements; and just another reason why i should've bought CS5 instead??

You can use a custom crop and Elements will automatically re-sample the pixels. You won’t get any distortion but you will sacrifice part of the image.
In this example the original image was 3872 x 2592
I divided 3872 by 2 and changed the height in the options bar to 1936
Part of the sky had to go but still a pleasing result.

You can position the crop shield anywhere. e.g. depending on the original you may want to loose part of the top or bottom. Simply move the image around to get the best composition then hit the green checkmark.

  • Interpretation rules not working; can't change pixel aspect ratio

    Hi,
I'm following the instructions on the Adobe help site here...
    http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/aspect-ratios.html
...so that I may use custom pixel aspect ratios in the interpret footage dialog box.
Unfortunately none of my changes to this file have any effect, and I'm clueless. These are cinemaDNG sequences and I'd like to keep working with them raw, otherwise I would take the time to export them and stretch them en masse through AE.

Hi Kevin, a mix of BMPCC and 5Dmk3 Magic Lantern. ML raw at 60p has a non-standard PAR, most of my footage is shot in this format. I need 0.65, the closest is 0.9091. I was disappointed at first to find no ability to manually enter the value, then elated to find the Interpretation rules text file, then disappointed again to find it doesn't work...hoping this ends well!

  • Yikes! Need to change pixel aspect ratio.

Hey folks, please be gentle, I'm really new to After Effects.
I created a fairly large composition in AE CS3. The dimensions are correct for the ultimate deployment (1536 x 680) but I've just discovered that my pixel aspect ratio was set incorrectly. I have it set to "D1/DV NTSC Widescreen (1.2)" and it needed to be set to "Square Pixels." So when I preview my project there are black bars top and bottom. When I change the pixel aspect ratio of my compositions to "Square Pixels" it literally cuts off my content on both sides. Gah. I don't have the time to rebuild the entire project!
Any suggestions? All help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Mylenium, thank you! Yeah, pixels are pixels, darn it!
Please let me just clarify ...
In my Render Queue I go to Output Module Settings and choose something like "JPEG Sequence" and render it out. (Will that make, like, a million individual files? I've got 3 compositions and they're all about 3 minutes long.)
Then create a new composition that is the correct size AND pixel aspect ratio.
Then import whatever was rendered out.
Sorry for the need for hand-holding!

  • Change in anamorphic pixel aspect ratio numbers?

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1796
This gives LiveType anamorphic number for DV NTSC as 1.19 as the pixel aspect ratio. The number that has always been given prior to this is 1.25. They seems to produce exactly the same results when imported in Final Cut. No scaling or distortion takes place in either project file when composited in FCP. Why the change in numbers, and why do they both work?
    Thanks.
    All the best,
    Tom

Tom, are you certain the NTSC value was given as something other than 1.19?
At least that's what it's always been according to an older Knowledge Base document link for the same issue, last modified date in 2004.

  • How do I change a pixel aspect ratio from HD 1920x1080 frame rate 25 to NTSC 640x480 frame rate 29.97

I upload files to a tv channel, but for them to air, they need to have a NTSC 640x480 pixel aspect ratio with a frame rate of 29.97. I currently have a .mov file HD 1920x180 frame rate 25. I deleted the original unedited files so all I have is the .mov file. I need to make my file NTSC 640x408 frame rate 29.97
    Thanks please answer ASAP

If you aren't entirely happy with the image quality you get from this in FCP. consider buying Compressor ($49). Down-converting from HD to SD often introduces artifacts. Compressor has a resize filter that does a good job of minimizing those artifacts.

  • How can I change the aspect ratio of an image display

I am snapping a sequence of images and using imgPlot to diplay the images. However, due to my camera specifications [it's a Pulnix 9701 with Pixel Size 11.6μm (H) X 13.3μm (V)], the image I get displayed is elongated in the horizontal direction, i.e. if I snap an image of a square, I get a rectangle on my computer display.
How can I change the aspect ratio of the display on my computer? The only parameters I have seen so far just control what portion of the image is acquired or diplayed, but none actually changes the aspect ratio.
Thanks in advance for any help.

If you are using an analog camera, you can set the aspect ratio in MAX. This will correct for non-square pixels.
If you are using a digital camera, I don't think there is a way to fix it during acquisition. You could resample the image to correct the ratios, but that would be a slow, time consuming process.
One other possibility is that your computer monitor is in a mode which is not a standard 4x3 configuration. For example 640x480 and 800x600 are 4:3 ratios. 1200x1024 is not, which tends to distort your displayed images.

  • Anamorphic Pixel Aspect Ratio

I am confused on all the different ways to get the "cinematic look". There are various ways to do this and  I want minimal distortion. I have PE 10, source Canon T3i in camera settings are 1920 by 1080 23.976fps. Initial project settings are DSLR>1920 by1080>24fps, square pixel ratio 1.0.
    My first question
1- Is shoting anamorphic in itself a distortion of the actual scene?
2- If it is distortion of the actual scene, then it seems like strching the image in post or with a lens shouldn't matter to much?
3-I can right click>Interpret Footage and then select conform to --"D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9 (1.2121)" or "Anamorphic 2:1 (2.0)" or "HD Anamorphic 1080 (1.333)". Which option would be best to get a proper depiction of your scene but also while achieving the "cinematic look"?(if any at all). (to me...it seems like "D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9 (1.2121)" does the best)
-buying anamorphic lens with an adapter that screws onto one of your prime lenses is the best option but it is a pain to have to deal with and is very expensive.
The easiest option is to select a title and put two black rectangles over your footage to mask it. I don't want to do this because you lose some of your footage and I would like to preserver all the footage if possible.
    Thanks

I could be mistaken..I'm not even sure
Premiere says it will "Conform" the "Pixel Aspect Ratio". When I select "D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9 (1.2121)" the pixel aspect ratio is changed from its original 1.0 square pixel to 1.2121. This is a screen shot of what I have been encountering. When this happens you do not lose any of the original footage by covering some of it up via a title and you get the "cinematic look" the wide screen look. So Yes, I am trying to get the 2.35:1 movie frame that you mentioned. That’s what I'm ultimately aiming to get. (the clip as you see it has yet to be changed, have not applied it yet so no black bars.
This is what it looks like with the "D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9 (1.2121)" conversion applied.

  • Stills: Pixel Aspect Ratio from File is Wrong

The photo montage I'm working on is D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9 (1.2121). I shoot the pix with my SONY Z5U and the raw stills are all 1440x810 72 dpi, square pixels. To conform them to my PPro project, I change their dimensions to 720x480 and I change the Pixel Aspect Ratio to D1/DV NTSC Widescreen (1.2). But when I import these stills into PPro they all appear squeezed and their aspect ratio comes up as D1/DV NTSC (09091), so I have to manually change it to D1/DV NTSC Widescreen. How can I get these stills to automatically be seen at Widescreen?

Well, the original pix are 1440x810. If I were to change just the height to 480 and Constrain Proportions, the new dimensions would be 853x480 (thereby maintaining the aspect ratio). And this IS square pixels. So changing the dimensions to 640x480 would just thin out the image.

  • Export Frame - Pixel Aspect Ratio

The video in my timeline is 720 by 480 (1.2121). When I clip on "Export Frame" in the program window it exports a jpg that is 720 by 480 (0.9091)
I know I can right click on it and "modify - Interpret footage" and correct the pixel aspect ratio.
My question is "Why is it doing this and how can I correct it"?
Is their a setting I'm missing? Why does it change the pixel aspect ratio?

The jpeg is not square. The pixel aspect ratio would be 1 and not .9091, if it were.
I have two computers. On one the "Export Frame" exports the jpeg with the same pixel aspect ratio.
The other machine changes the pixel aspect ratio from 1.2121 to .9091.
I can't find any differences in my settings.

  • Custom Pixel Aspect Ratio (After Effects CC 2014)

    Hi All,
How do you create a custom Pixel Aspect Ratio for After Effects CC 2014. I need a PAR of 3.3, as it would help me solve a technical problem i've been having with projection mapping.
I've tried editing the Interpretation Rules.txt file which was hidden within the Users\Appdata\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects\13.1 Folder. To remove the last # so i can at least see that I can set up a custom PAR.
But it doesn't appear in the drop down menu when creating a comp, or interpreting footage.
I've also made the same change to the Interpretation Rules.txt file in the Premiere PRO CC 2014\Plug-ins\en_US\ folder.
And I've restarted my PC after changes just incase Media Core wasn't updating itself properly.
I can see the Custom PAR as an export option out of Media Encoder. But thats not what i need. I need to be able to correct a render which had a PAR of 3.3 without losing pixel information, much like an Anamorphic workflow.
Anyway, Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Evan

    Hi Rick,
You're right, it's no known PAR... completely arbitrary and custom to this particular job. I'll run you through my process.
I have a projection surface (a basketball court) Which needs to have content designed onto it which is viewable from one perspective point (camera 1) in the stadium. The problem is that Camera 1's viewing angle to the court is quite shallow.
This is what Camera 1 sees:
I will be generating like this for the surface so that it looks like a deep 3d surface from "camera 1"
Now, the problem is that when I perspective correct the renders to fit what the projector will be projecting from straight down. There isn't enough pixel information for the height of the image. Meaning the pixels will smear.
This is the image that would be projected from a top mounted projector to achieve the 3d effect from the image above, you can see the loss of information in the the height pixels.
My solution for getting more information into the height is to render out of our 3d packages with a Pixel Aspect Ratio of 3.3. This was the sweet spot I found to get enough pixel information to match the pixel output of the projectors.
The resulting render looks like this (note, the angle of the camera hasn't changed)
As you can see, there is more height detail now, which will mean that that last row of pixels will be remain fairly sharp.
So, at this point, I can render from my 3d applications, and conform to the projector dimensions, with very little information loss in the height of the projected image, and without compromising my 3d persepctive.
I'm using the plugin "Camera Mapper" to project this render onto a plane which gets me the full frame of the projector at the right resolution, 4608 x 2304
The tricky part how to composite elements into the scene in an intuitive way.
If i want a horse to look like its jumping through the scene from "camera 1", like this:
Then in the that contains all the information, It will look like this:
Now that's all well and good, but it'll be harder to create realistic looking effects from this view, because they'll all need to be stretched.
I'd like to retain all the image information and just view the comp as though it's squished down.
I imagine this could be done easily by changing the comp settings to a PAR of 3.3.
That way, all the pixel information remains, but i can design in a realistically proportioned composition.
I hope that gets you up to speed on my issue, and my request for a solution.
So, in summary. I'll I'm really looking for is a way to customise the PAR options so that I have a custom available that I can apply to this, and only this scene.
    Does this makes sense?
    Cheers,
    Evan
