Change Rulers in Fireworks CS6

So in photoshop to change the ruler to inches you just go into the preferences and rulers and measurements tab. In fireworks though there is no such tab, so how do I change my ruler in fireworks to measure inches?

If there were a simple way to do this, I think you'd find it within Preferences. It may not be possible.
Fireworks is really all about the pixels, and doesn't have the "print" orientation that Photoshop does (where output is routinely measured in inches).
I was going to suggest using View > Grid > Edit Grid… to set up a custom grid that could approximate inches. For example, if your resolution were at 72ppi, you could set the grid unit to 72px. But this would be an abstract version of inches, much smaller than the actual units. If you knew the resolution of your monitor (e.g. 106ppi), you could set up a good approximation of inches; however, Fireworks seems to have an upper limit of 100 pixels as the grid unit, so you'd need to at least divide your resolution in half (e.g. 53px) to draw a grid line every half inch.

True, no decimal inches option. Well there is metric, but if that's a no-go;
One workaround would be to go into Edit > Preferences > Guides, Grids and Slices and set grid spacing 1 inch with 10 subdivisions. Then in the View menu, Show > Grid or the Ctrl + ' (Ctrl apostrophe) shortcut that will toggle the grid on and off.
This question goes back to CS3...maybe time for a feature request. Odd enough, Inches Decimal is an option in InDesign's rulers.

Fireworks cs6 file is locked after making changes

I am continuing to run into problems when editing fireworks files. I am using Fireworks CS6 running on Windows 8.1.
If i open up a previously saved image in any folder to make edits, when I try to save the file (back to the same folder) it does not allow me to because the file is locked. I can however save the file to a different folder. What causes this?
I've tried a few suggestions in the forums and still can't seem to figure out what the issues are. Any help would be appreciated.

Fireworks CS6

I discover a problem or bug in Fireworks CS6 while ago , posted in Fireworks forum - no answer…report it like a bug to adobe – no answer,….call to technical support,…after been on hold ,described all info, on hold again, I got answer: report it like a bug on adobe side and support forum ,,,,,when I told support person , that I did that already, he told me, nothing else he can do for me…
I just guessing, nobody give a s….t anymore, nowhere, and that seems to be a problem in all around us, that is why economy sucks and…..
I am old enough to still remember old good times, when people still care and if you call from English speaking country, you got help speaking English..
Anyway, problem is, if you create a new document, and create a small slice in the middle, then create a hot spot bigger then that slice, and preview it in MS explorer, you will see some blue borders, frames around slices. Google Chrome or Safari is OK.
You can just create only hot spot in empty document, and it happened too, just first description is better to see.
And old Fireworks is OK, CS5…………….
No big deal for me, just have to use CS5,…just try to help developers fix bags….if they care…

You've already made progress in isolating the problem: It occurs in CS6 but not in CS5. A good strategy would be to create a simple file in CS5, and then export it twice: first in CS5 and then again in CS6. When it comes to HTML output, the answer should be somewhere in the code. Compare the two versions. Use Dreamweaver's code view, or use the View Source option that's available in most web browsers.
I tried this myself, using a simple Fireworks file containing just a single slice. I used the default export options for both CS5 and CS6, then opened both HTML files in Firefox and used its View Source option.
This first graphic below shows the HTML output from CS5. The second shows the HTML output from CS6.
See the difference? The CS5 version is riddled with border="0" attributes on every img tag. The CS6 version omits these attributes. Believe it or not, the CS6 version is probably better, from a contemporary coding standpoint. The use of style attributes on HTML tags (as in CS5) is deprecated in favor of using CSS rules. But then again, the use of slices, in general, is not a contemporary, standards-based method of web development—except, perhaps, in small doses.
The good news: If you're looking for an easy fix for this, I think I've got one for you. Within Fireworks CS6, go to File > HTML Setup... and then under the HTML Style dropdown menu, select "Generic XHTML" instead of Dreamweaver XHTML. (Or choose Generic HTML.) This seems to bring back the border="0" attributes. And once you've made this change, it should become the new default for all your Fireworks CS6 documents.
The bad news: Web development is a constantly moving target. When creating web designs and converting them to code, you're creating instructions for a design rather than the design itself. Each web browser has a tendency to interpret those instructions slightly differently. That's why Internet Explorer is showing you blue borders, where Google Chrome is not.
I wouldn't trust Fireworks as a resource for contemporary web development practices. It's pretty much behind the times. But that doesn't mean it's not good for some things—like design, or certain aspects of the development process. And it's evolving, too.
Much in line with Linda's suggestion (and my own on your previous post), you could instead opt to address this problem by adding a small CSS declaration to the existing style tag within the head of your HTML document, something like this:

</style>
However, this would require modifying the code directly—and may require a bit of tweaking and experimentation—which may not be your preference. So my first suggestion might work better for you.

Fireworks CS6 from CC doens't respond properly anymore-

Hi there,
I'm working in Fireworks CS6 at my office and the problem I have since last Friday is,
that the whole application doesn't respond properly anymore.
The tool-shortcuts doesn't work anymore. While clicking the V and A button on my keyboard
the tools eventually change thru but they're not working. So when I want do select an element
I usually have to just click it when the right arrow-tool is selected but since friday I have to
go through my layer-window to select any element.
The next problem is (just as another example) the type tool. I can't just click it and type the hell
out of that text box, NO (!!!), I have to select a word or a whole paragraph and than shift through it
with my arrow-keys on the keyboard. That's just not working well. Sometimes I can't even do it
like that and I have to restart the whole application.
Another problem appears while the zoom-tool is selected. I just can zoom in and out by clicking the
left mouse button and drag the selection open. Just clicking doesn't work anymore.
Any suggestions on how to solve that problem? I've already reinstalled Fireworks twice (also with deleting
all supporting files and preferences while uninstall the application.)

I am having similar problems. As of this morning, I can no longer use the text tool to select and edit text, using Zoom from the toolbar does not work, though the keyboard shortcut still functions, I'm sure there are other issues I haven't discovered yet, but I'm effectively stuck in the water now and will likely miss a huge deadline today because of this. Adobe, somebody, please help!
Adrian, I am going to try reinstalling and if that doesn't work then I will try the Permissions fix suggested in this thread: Select Tool, Text Tool stopped working in Fireworks CS6 on Mac OS 10.9.3 rendering program useless.... thoughts?
Although, to be honest, I'm not sure how to do that, but I'll get someone to help me. If any of those things work I'll report back. Please let me know if you have been able to resolve the problem since your post and what you did. Thanks!

Fireworks CS6 Drag and Drop?

I recently got the Fireworks CS6 trial to just well...try it out. I was unable to drag and drop images on to the program, instead when I try to the cursor changes to an icon with a circle and a line going diagonally across it..Any solutions?

Are you dragging and dropping an image onto the canvas of an open document? Or are you dragging an image onto the application icon (e.g. in the dock) in order to open the file in Fireworks? I'm able to do both on Mac OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).
However, there's other ways to accomplish both of those tasks—for example, using File > Import or File > Open.

Adobe Fireworks CS6 keyboard problem

Hi everyone,
I use Macbook Pro with Lion system. The same time I have a Master Collection CS6. My Keyboard is F but when I start Adobe Fireworks CS6 keyboard is change. For example; I press F on the keyboard but Fireworks wrote Q. I can't use keyboard shortcuts and other things. Other Adobe application works very well.
How to solve this problem?

Fireworks CS6 won't create editable PSD

My version of Fireworks CS6 installed through the Creative Cloud will not save PNG files as PSD files that are editable in previous versions of Photoshop or other software that supports PSDs. My new PS CC 2014 will open the file with layers and elements editable, but in Photoshop Elements 8.0, the layers of the PSD are locked and not editable. This problem was brought to my attention by another individual that I sent as PSD to. I do not know what software the person used to open the file, but I encountered the same issue on my machine. After several tests and changes to saving preferences, the problem remains. I have tried opening Fireworks PNGs generated on my computer on other computers, then generating the PSD and that seems to work, but my machine will not perform this function directly. I am currently running Windows 7 Home Premium and all systems are up to date and checked as of today.

That is strange. I tested it myself, and I have no issues saving a layered fireworks file as a psd file that I can open in Photoline: all layers are there, even the vector objects and masked bitmap versions of those same vector layers.
Just to confirm: you save the psd via FILE-->SAVE AS, and then choose "psd" as the file format?
Could you share a sample psd that you exported with us?

Fireworks CS6 Error Message "Invalid Checksum"

I'm quite computer literate and know my way around OSX very well, however I'm having issue downloading this trial version of Fireworks CS6.
First I tried downloading it with OSX 10.8.2, and I go the error "Invalid Checksum"...in other words the file was corrupted or incomplete (correct?).
I then updated my OS to 10.8.3 and attempted the download a second time, I encountered the same error.
My hardware: 2012 15" Macbook Pro Retina
Internet is fast enough to play games like Halo and Call of Duty, so this shouldn't be an issue.
Is this a common bug? Do i just need to try and download the file until it finally works? Or is there something I can do?
I also deleted Adobe Install and redownloaded that as well, but it didn't change anything.
Basically I'm out of ideas and am hoping someone else has some helpful knowledge.
*Just tried a 3rd time and encountered the same error. I just can't get this do download correctly, any help would be much appreciated.

Fireworks CS6 Serial Number issue

I've just purchased Fireworks CS6 and went to install it but it keeps telling me that the serial number that I have is valid but it cannot find a qualifying product on my computer and gives me the option to change to CS5,4,or 3. This was a download.

What you describe would indicate you have purchased/acquired an upgrade version, not a full version... it is failing to find the preceding version that qualifies you to activate the upgrade. It is possibly then asking you to provide the serial number for the preceding version as an alternative to having it installed.

Problem editing labels of radio button symbols in Fireworks CS6

Hi,
I'm new to Fireworks, and I am struggling with symbols. I have encountered several problems creating reusable symbols and especially editing the labels.
Problem 1
I can't edit the label of a symbol that I create using a default Common Library symbol as a starting point. Here's how to reproduce:
- Open a default symbol, say RadioButton(win) for editing
- Do changes (font for example)
- Save as a new symbol in the Common Library folder
- Use the new symbol in a new document
- Editing the label in symbol instance properties does not work
Continuing with a rather irrelevant use case just trying to understand what is going on:
- Add a default symbol RadioButton(win) from the Common Library to the same document
- Now try editing the label of the new symbol (added to the document above)
- The label (and other properties) of the default symbol are edited instead
Problem 2
Why can I not enter a number as a label of the RadioButton(win) symbol, found in the Common Library? The workaround is simple though, I can just enter a number followed by a space.
Problem 3
How to create a set of a heading and three radio buttons as a symbol? If I simply convert three RadioButton(win) symbols and a text element to a new symbol, I lose the possibility to edit the labels of the radion buttons. The properties show that the radio buttons have labels from the time before converting to a new symbol, but in the new symbol the radio button elements have labels that say "label", and I cannot edit them.
What is the best way to create radio buttons, check boxes, combo boxes and other symbols with custom look and feel, while retaining all the functionality of the symbols?

Fireworks CS6 on Mavericks: bad color matching

I've just spent the morning telling a client that they must be crazy— the fact that when opening their logo in Fireworks, and sampling the color to build matching elements— the color isn't... *OOPS, oh crap*... matching.
Not only when opening images in CS6, but taking screenshots of anything on-screen (with default OSX screenshot -or- any screenshot app) is giving me bad results in Fireworks.
Try this:
1. Go to the following site: http://www.colorhexa.com/59136b
2. Download the main image there ( http://www.colorhexa.com/59136b.png )
3. Open it up in Fireworks CS6 on Mavericks.
4. Either using the background eyedropper, or create a new rectangle and use that eyedropper, sample the 59136b.png image.
5. For me, Fireworks says this image color is #5A0B6D.

...As pointed out in the comments by Chris and Scott (thanks guys!), there is another method you can use which is the eyedropper in the "Colors" section of the main Tools panel.
All you need to do is click the pencil icon if you want to change the line, or the bucket if you want to change the fill:
Then click the eyedropper just above:
Then click your colour.

Dreamweaver cs4 fireworks cs6 cannot edit between

Hello in Adobe Land.
I have been using DW CS4 with Fireworks CS4 for some years...no problem.
Recently upgraded to Fireworks CS6, still using DW CS4.
Changed preferences in Dreamweaver ... for jpg, png, etc to FW CS6.
One or two of the images in DW will switch to Fireworks, others will not.
I can swith to Fireworks by right clicking, but it is not really efficent compared to what I had with CS 4.
If anyone with greater understanding of these programmes couldadvise how to improve the situation, it would be greatly appreciated.
Help this pensioner in stress.

Further to the above.... which is now solved .....
In case any other unfortunate non techie should experience it.......
When you upgrade, some of your prefernces follow you.... this being one of them.
The thing to do is to remove the exisiting and replace everything in the right hand column.
The fact that the browse button above indicates where you really want to edit, the names below are the edit locations it goes to.

Help! Upgrade Fireworks CS5 (from Creative Suite 5 Web Premium) to Fireworks CS6 not working!

Today I bought and downloaded Fireworks CS6 from the Adobe webshop as an update for my Fireworks CS5 that was included in my Creative Suite 5 Web Premium-set.
But during the installation of Fireworks CS6 the serial number of my Creative Suite 5 Web Premium - needed for the installer to verify that I could 'legaly' upgrade - was not accepted! So now I can use Fireworks CS6 only as a try-out-version...
What can I do? If Creative Suite 5 Web Premium isn't the right upgrade-version: how can I get my money back? Or is there another solution?

Thanks for the reply. but how do I manually weed out the install entries in my registry? could you please guide me with the steps? This http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html is not working I am afraid. I understand that I need to uninstall the creative suite before I run CS cleaner. But as I explained in my first question, the uninstallation is not working at all. Even I could uninstall the software, I am afraid that I may get into trouble if installatin is not working. All I want is that my photoshop error " save for web devices " which was grayed out should work as normal. This error happened after I moved the plug-ins.

Fireworks CS6 trial is very slow on Windows 7

I'm not sure what's going on, but it's bound to be fixable. I've downloaded and installed the Fireworks CS6 trial and it's stalling after performing simple tasks. The only way I know to describe it is like this -- here are a few examples:
Try to create text, type the first letter and it hangs for about 30 seconds. Does the same after every letter I type.
Zoom in, it hangs for about 30 seconds and tries to catch up.
Move a layer in the layers panel, it hangs for about 30 seconds.
In some cases, such as entering text, when it hangs I can minimize the window and then come back and it's ready to go. Of course it hangs again as soon as I type the next letter.
Anyway, it's strange behavior and I'm not sure what to do. I'm on a ThinkPad W510 with Windows 7 Professional and 8 GB of ram.

Thats odd - is the lag only with type objects? Specific Font Face or all of them? Does it occur with vector shape object creation/mainpulation?
Is it possible that you have a corrupt font?
I also use Win 7, though not the same machine specs as yours but do not see the lag as you do.
Hopefully, the engineers drop by the forums to better assist.
