Change Shared Memory owner

I am running BerkeleyDB on FreeBSD 6.2 ... our application has two sets of processes that share a common set of databases. Each set of processes runs as a different user. I would like to use the shared memory environment option ( DB_SYSTEM_MEM ).
If a process under user A creates a DB which is then later recovered by a process owned by user B ... it will fail. This is because FreeBSD only allows the owner or creator ( they can be different ) to delete a shared memory region which occurs during recovery.
If BerkeleyDB had a means to set the owner / creator as different users that would help.
Any other suggestions ?

Hi,
The easiest solution would probably for your application (in process under user A) were to change the access permissions of the region after it is opened.

    Hi
    This is not possible.
    The shared memory is assigned automatically and this is controlled by graphic card driver.
    But the shared memory is only in use if the applications (i.e game) would require more graphic RAM.

  • Disp+work stop because of shared memory?

    Hello Gurus, I have an SAP server that will not start. It was running previously, but after a parameter update and an instance restart, I cannot get the dispatcher running.
    System is Windows 2012 Server, MSSQL 2008 R2, 16 Core 132 GB RAM.
    I believe it is related to shared memory overlapping somehow, but  I am not sure how to resolve or investigate. I have had issues previously with memory overlap halting SAP servers with Diagnostics Agents, but this server is not currently running any DAA. It is running SAPRouter and some SAP Web Dispatcher instances.
    I will include my trace files below:

    Hi Alwina, here is the DEV_ICM trace:
    From this trace, it appears that it is listening to 65000?
    Netstat shows that the system is listening to 127.0.0.1:65000 .
    Other SAP ports show listening on 0:0:0:0:xxxx , is ICM listening on 127 a problem?

    Those parameters look ok for a 100GB shared memory segment. Also check the following:
    ulimit - a mechanism to restrict the amount of system resources a process can consume. Your instance administrator user, the user who installed Oracle TimesTen needs to be allocated enough lockable memory resource to load and lock your Oracle TimesTen shared memory segment.
    This is configured with the memlock entry in the OS file /etc/security/limits.conf for the instance administrator.
    To view the current setting run the OS command
    $ ulimit -l
    and to set it to a value dynamically use
    $ ulimit -l <value>.
    Once changed you need to restart the TimesTen master daemon for the change to be picked up.
    $ ttDaemonAdmin -restart
    Beware sometimes ulimit is set in the instance administrators "~/.bashrc" or "~/.bash_profile" file which can override what's set in /etc/security/limits.conf
    If this is ok then it might be related to Hugepages. If TT is configured to use Hugepages then you need enough Hugepages to accommodate the 100GB shared memory segment. TT is configured for Hugepages if the following entry is in the /u01/app/oracle/EXALYTICS_MWHOME/TimesTen/tt1122/info/ttendaemon.options file:
    -linuxLargePageAlignment 2
    So if configured for Hugepages please see this example of how to set an appropriate Hugepages setting:
    Total the amount of memory required to accommodate your TimesTen database from /u01/app/oracle/EXALYTICS_MWHOME/TimesTen/tt1122/info/sys.odbc.ini
    PermSize+TempSize+LogBufMB+64MB Overhead
    For example consider a TimesTen database of size:
    PermSize=250000 (unit is MB)
    TempSize=100000
    LogBufMB=1024
    Total Memory = 250000+100000+1024+64 = 351088MB
    The Hugepages pagesize on the Exalytics machine is 2048KB or 2MB. Therefore divide the total amount of memory required above in MB by the pagesize of 2MB. This is now the number of Hugepages you need to configure.
    351088/2 = 175544
    As user root edit the /etc/sysctl.conf file
    Add/modify vm.nr_hugepages= to be the number of Hugepages calculated.
    vm.nr_hugepages=175544
    Add/modify vm.hugetlb_shm_group = 600
    This parameter is the group id of the TimesTen instance administrator. In the Exalytics system this is oracle. Determine the group id while logged in as oracle with the following command. In this example it’s 600.
    $ id
    $ uid=700(oracle) gid=600(oinstall) groups=600(oinstall),601(dba),700(oracle)
    As user root edit the /etc/security/limits.conf file
    Add/modify the oracle memlock entries so that the fourth field equals the total amount of memory for your TimesTen database. The unit for this value is KB. For example this would be 351088*1024=359514112KB
    oracle hard memlock 359514112
    oracle soft memlock 359514112
    THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT in order for the above changes to take effect you to either shutdown the BI software environment including TimesTen and reboot or issue the following OS command to make the changes permanent.
    $ sysctl -p
    Please note that dynamic setting (including using 'sysctl -p') of vm.nr_hugepages while the system is up may not give you the full number of Hugepages that you have specified. The only guaranteed way to get the full complement of Hugepages is to reboot.
    Check Hugepages has been setup correctly, look for Hugepages_Total
    $ cat /proc/meminfo | grep Huge
    Based on the example values above you would see the following:
    HugePages_Total: 175544
    HugePages_Free: 175544

    This error in my experience on Linux/Unix means that the shared segment (SGA) has not been correctly released/closed/destoyed - and according to the kernel this shared memory still exists.
    This shared memory has to be removed in order for the instance startup to (re-)create the SGA.
    The command to use to check shared memory is ipcs -m. E.g.
    /usr/lib/oracle/xe> ipcs -m
    ------ Shared Memory Segments --------
    key        shmid      owner      perms      bytes      nattch     status
    0x0966f45c 26345537   oracle     640        148897792  22         Assuming that the database instance is indeed not running (no processes left), the shared memory segment can be removed using "+ipcrm+". E.g.
    /usr/lib/oracle/xe> ipcrm -M 0x0966f45cObviously, do NOT remove the SGA when there are still database instance processes attached to it. Make very sure that ALL processes for that instance have terminated.

  • Redhat: TT0837: Cannot attach data store shared-memory segment, error 12

    Customer has two systems, one Solaris and one Linux.  We have six DSNs with one dsn PermSize at 1.85G.  Both OS systems are 32-bit.   After migrating from TT6.0 to 11.2,  I can not get replication working on the Linux system for the 1.85G dsn.   The Solaris system is working correctly.   I've been able to duplicate the issue in out lab also.  If I drop the PermSize down to 1.0G, replication is started.   I've tried changing multiple parameters including setting up HugePages.
    What else could I be missing?  Decreasing the PermSize is not an option for this customer.   Going to a full 64-bit system is on our development roadmap but is at least a year away due to other commitments.
    This is my current linux lab configuration.

    The size of these databases is very close to the limit for 32-bit systems and you are almost certainly running into address space issues given that 11.2 has a slightly larger footprint than 6.0. 32-bit is really 'legacy' nowadays and you should move to a 64-bit platform as soon as you are able. That will solve your problems. I do not think there is any other solution (other than reducing the size of the database).

  • Questions about db_keep_cache_size and Automatic Shared Memory Management

    Hello all,
    I'm coming upon a server that I'm needing to pin a table and some objects in, per the recommendations of an application support call.
    Looking at the database, which is a 5 node RAC cluster (11gr2), I'm looking to see how things are laid out:
    SQL> select name, value, value/1024/1024 value_MB from v$parameter
    2 where name in ('db_cache_size','db_keep_cache_size','db_recycle_cache_size','shared_pool_size','sga_max_size');
    NAME VALUE VALUE_MB
    sga_max_size 1694498816 1616
    shared_pool_size 0 0
    db_cache_size 0 0
    db_keep_cache_size 0 0
    db_recycle_cache_siz 0 0
    e
    Looking at granularity level:
    SQL> select granule_size/value from v$sga_dynamic_components, v$parameter where name = 'db_block_size' and component like 'KEEP%';
    GRANULE_SIZE/VALUE
    2048
    Then....I looked, and I thought this instance was set up with Auto Shared Mem Mgmt....but I see that sga_target size is not set:
    SQL> show parameter sga
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    lock_sga boolean FALSE
    pre_page_sga boolean FALSE
    sga_max_size big integer 1616M
    sga_target big integer 0
    So, I'm wondering first of all...would it be a good idea to switch to Automatic Shared Memory Management? If so, is this as simple as altering system set sga_target =...? Again, this is on a RAC system, is there a different way to do this than on a single instance?
    If that isn't the way to go...let me continue with the table size, etc....
    The table I need to pin is:
    SQL> select sum (blocks) from all_tables where table_name = 'MYTABLE' and owner = 'MYOWNER';
    SUM(BLOCKS)
    4858
    And block size is:
    SQL> show parameter block_size
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    db_block_size integer 8192
    So, the space I'll need in memory for pinning this is:
    4858 * 8192 /1024/1024 = 37.95.......which is well below my granularity mark of 2048
    So, would this be as easy as setting db_keep_cache_size = 2048 with an alter system call? Do I need to set db_cache_size first? What do I set that to?
    Thanks in advance for any suggestions and links to info on this.

    I dunno what is this fuckin shared memoryThis fuckin shared memory is how oracle does interprocess communication. When you connect to Oracle, you have to connect to this area. If you tell it the wrong area, it won't find it. You can see the areas with the ipcs command on the server. Since you can connect locally, but can't connect remotely, there is something wrong with how you told Oracle to connect remotely. Remotely can be on the same host if you have an @ in the connect string.

    Well I dunno what to do I didn't think getting a simple login locally over tcp/ip would be so difficult, I am afraid of what will happen after this will work :) As it should be one of the easiest things on oracle what about the hardest :)Well, first try removing the trailing slash from ORACLE_HOME everywhere, including if you have it in the listener.ora. Then compare the tnsnames.ora ORACLE_HOME with your environment ORACLE_HOME. In fact, if you have a listener.ora, try renaming it to something else and restarting the listener.
    That error is normally due to a bad ORACLE_HOME or ORACLE_SID. Since your tnsping works, that indicates the ORACLE_HOME is good. But all that tells you is that the listener responds. Other causes may be inadequate processes in init.ora or case issues with the sid, or just generally not following the installation instructions. But are there installation instructions for debian?
    With multiple databases on one host, some kernel parameters may need to be increased.

  • ORA-27123 unable to attach shared memory segment

    Running oracle 8.1.5.0.0 on Redhat 6.0 with kernel 2.2.12, I keep getting the error ORA-27123 unable to attach shared memory segment when trying to startup and instance with an SGA > 150 MB or so. I have modified the shmmax and shmall kernel parameters via the /proc/sys interface. The relevant output of ipcs -l is below:
    ------ Shared Memory Limits --------
    max number of segments = 128
    max seg size (kbytes) = 976562
    max total shared memory (kbytes) = 16777216
    min seg size (bytes) = 1
    This system has 2gb of physical memory and is doing nothing except oracle.
    I changed the shmmax and shmall parameters after the instance was created, was their something I needed to do to inform Oracle of the changes?

    High JW,
    i had the same problem on my installation.
    The solution is written in the Oracle8i Administrator Refernece on page 1-26 "Relocating the SGA"
    a) determine the valid adress range for Shared Memory with:
    $ tstshm
    in the output Lowest & Highest SHM indicate the valid adress range
    b) run genksms to generate the file ksms.s
    $ cd $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib
    $ $ORACLE_HOME/bin/genksms -b "sga_beginn_adress" > ksms.s
    c) shut down any instance
    d) rebuilt the oracle exe in $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib
    $ make -f ins_rdbms.mk ksms.o
    $ make -f ins_rdbms.mk ioracle
    the result is a new oracle kernel that loads the SGA at the adress specified in "sga_beginn_adress".

  • Oracle Error 'ORA-27102: out of memory' - Shared memory parameters correct.

    Advice please!
    We’ve recently shut down our Oracle test server in order to increase file system capacity.  When we rebooted some of the databases wouldn’t start up.  It started the first 4 instances and then errored out saying “ORA-27102: out of memory“.
    I’m pretty sure it’s nothing to do with the file system because we actually reverted back to the old file system and the databases still wouldn’t start.  I think it’s more likely that something’s gone awry whilst the databases were actually running, and the problem has only manifested itself once we stopped and restarted them.
    I have researched the error and forud this artical and similar:  http://var-adm.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/adjust-solaris-10-shared-memory-to.html
    Everything suggests that Oracle is trying to create a larger shared memory segment than is allowed.  The thing is, we’ve never changed our shared memory settings, and one minute it was working, the next it isn’t.  To confirm this I checked the shared memory, which is as follows:
    sswift4# prctl -n project.max-shm-memory $$
    process: 926: bash
    NAME    PRIVILEGE       VALUE    FLAG   ACTION                       RECIPIENT
    project.max-shm-memory
            privileged      7.64GB      -   deny                                 -
            system          16.0EB    max   deny                                 -
    As suggested in the above article, I checked the alert log and found the ‘WARNING: EINVAL’ message which is as follows:
    WARNING: EINVAL creating segment of size 0x000000005e002000
    Converting this to decimal, it’s trying to create something of 1.5 GB, well within the shared memory settings, which suggests that this isn’t the problem.
    We are running Oracle 10g and 11g on Solaris 10 Sparc. The error does not seem to be instance specific, we have 8 instances on this box all with SGA max of 2000m. The server has 32GB of memory available.
    Any advice would be helpful.
    Thanks in advance.
    Debs

    Thanks for your quick responses - we have now resolved the issue.
    The shared memory value was set on the command line but not saved.
    Therefore once we rebooted it lost the configuration. this has been altered by our UNIX admin and all DBs have started without issue.
    Thanks

  • FATAL: shared memory region is being held at - Error when installing SAP with sapinst

    Hi guys
    This error is kinda odd since i have installed 3 systems under the same OS/DB Conditions

  • Solaris 10 shared memory config/ora 11g

    The ora 11 install guide for spark solaris 10 is very confusing wrt shared memory and my system does not seem to using memory correctly, lots of swapping on an 8GB real memory system.
    The doc says to set /etc/system to:
    shmsys:shminfo_shmmax project.max-shm-memory 4294967296
    but infers that this is not used.
    Then, the doc states to set a project shared mem value of 2GB:
    # projmod -sK "project.max-shm-memory=(privileged,2G,deny)" group.dba
    Why is this number different?
    By setting to to 2G as documented oracle did not work at all and so I found Note:429191.1
    on the solaris 10 memory which hints that these numbers should be big:
    % prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -r -v 24GB -i project oracle_dss
    % prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -i project oracle_dss
    project: 101: oracle_dss
    NAME PRIVILEGE VALUE FLAG ACTION RECIPIENT
    project.max-shm-memory
    privileged 24.0GB - deny -
    system 16.0EB max deny
    Is there some logic in how to get solaris 10/ora 11 to hold hands. The install doc does not seem to contain it.

    system does not seem to using memory correctly, lots of swapping on an 8GB real memory system.We could start (for example) with this question - How big is your SGA or how much of 8GB RAM takes your SGA?
    The doc says to set /etc/system to:
    shmsys:shminfo_shmmax project.max-shm-memory 4294967296
    but infers that this is not used.From documentation:
    In Solaris 10, you are not required to make changes to the /etc/system file to implement the System V IPC. Solaris 10 uses the resource control facility for its implementation. However, Oracle recommends that you set both resource control and /etc/system/ parameters. Operating system parameters not replaced by resource controls continue to affect performance and security on Solaris 10 systems.
    Then, the doc states to set a project shared mem value of 2GB:
    # projmod -sK "project.max-shm-memory=(privileged,2G,deny)" group.dba
    Why is this number different?It's an example how "To set the maximum shared memory size to 2 GB"
    By setting to to 2G as documented oracle did not work at all Docs says:
    On Solaris 10, verify that the kernel parameters shown in the following table are set to values greater than or equal to the recommended value shown.
    If your SGA was greater than 2G I'm nor wondering why "oracle did not work at all".
    So for 4GB SGA (for example) you need allow allocation of 4G of shared memory.
    Note: shmsys:shminfo_shmmax != project.max-shm-memory. "project.max-shm-memory" is replacement of "shmsys:shminfo_shmmax" but function of these parameters differs.
    "project.max-shm-memory resource control limits the total amount of shared memory of one project, whereas previously, the shmsys:shminfo_shmmax parameter limited the size of a single shared memory segment."

  • Shared memory in solaris 10 with oracle

    Hi, I am a newbie to solaris and i have some questions on shared memory, Oracle in Solaris
    My Questions might seem different, however please do read and try to answer. Thanks in advance.
    1) if a solaris server has say 40gb of Ram, what would be the maximum size of a shared memory segment in this machine?
    I know that if the server has 40GB. then max shared memory size is 10GB i.e. one fourth of ram, however not sure
    2) What is the maximum size of a shared memory segment in solaris that a root user can define.
    + i know that its some where near 14 GB not very sure +
    3) Assume i have created a user X and i allocated say 10GB limit for this user for shared memory.
    I login to solaris using X and now, can i increase the size of the shared memory that this user can use?
    I have a situation, where the root user, created a user named DBA and the root user allocated some 15gb for this DBA user as the max SHM limit.
    Now the DBA user has set the max limit for shared memory as 1TB, which is causing hell of problems in the system.
    * I am Not very sure on the concept. I am new to this product and facing this problem. please advice.*
    + Thanks +

    Not sure why your "oracle" user (owner who will be creating the instance) has been assigned the project user.root. I would say create a seperate project may be "dba" and give access to this project to the owner of the user who will be creating the oracle instance.
    and then try to issue the command:
    prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -v 8gb -r -i project dba
    and check to see if you are still facing a problem?

  • SAP HA ASCS Instance service Shared Memory Problem

    Hi Gurus,
    I have completed the setup of ASCS and ERS instance for SAP HA.  The system was working fine, but yesterday when I was trying to start the ASCS instance, it shows following error in the dev_enqsrv log file.
    ShadowTable:attach: ShmCreate - pool doesn't exist
    Enqueue: EnqMemStartupAction Utc=1267507616
    Enqueue Info: replication enabled
    Enqueue Info: enque/replication_dll not set
    ShadowTable:attach: ShmCreate - pool doesn't exist
    ERROR => EnqRepAttachOldTable: failed to get information on old replication table: rc=-1 [enxxmrdt.h   393]
    EnqRepRestoreFromReplica: failed to attach to old replication table: rc=-1
    enque/backup_file disabled in enserver environment
    ***LOG GEZ=> Server start [encllog.cpp  493]
    For resolving this error, I have performed following steps:
    1. cleanipc 04 remove ( where 04 is the instance no for ASCS instance)
    2. saposcol -k to stop the saposcollector and release the shared memory.
    3. Also performed some steps like saposcol -d, kill , leave, quit.
    After doing this steps, the same error is been generated in the dev_enqsrv log file. The only problem with this is the ASCS instance is starting , but while checking the log file available.log, it is changing the staus from available to unavailable every 30 secs.
    Appreciate any response.
    Regards,
    Raj.

    Hi,
    important to know is your NW kernel version and the setup of your file systems.
    The error message could be no real error. It could be just the indication that there is no replicated enqueue table available and therefore the enqueue server of the starting ASCS instance is not able to attach to any existing table. It would create a new one. But: If you start your ASCS on the node where the ERS was running and you see that error message, that indicates that the replicated enqueue table couldn't be attached on your starting enqueue server, which is a critical error in a failover scenario.
    Check following help.sap.com site for details how enqueue table replication works:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70ehp1/helpdata/en/47/e023f3bf423c83e10000000a42189c/frameset.htm
    The available.log has this confusing entries if you have your /usr/sap/<SID>/<Instance>/work directory on a clustered file system which is present on both nodes. In that case, the sapstartsrv of the ASCS on the active node will write to the log file that the instance is available, whereas the sapstartsrv of the ASCS on the passive node will write to the log file that the instance is not available. It's a bug, but there are several possibilities to workaround.
    If you need documentation of SAP HA on SLES or RHEL, I can post the links of the whitepapers here.
    Best regards,
    Matthias

  • Shared memory in /var/run instead of /tmp

    I use shared memory segment on a diskless node.
    This shared memory segment are stored in /tmp.
    Is there a way to put them in a "memory based" directory, as /var/run (solaris 8) instead of
    the disk-based directory

    My problem was especially to change toe location
    of the shared memory on file system. I succeed
    with FIFO but not with shared memory. I
    don't find any solution.
    concerning the definition of memory base vs. file
    based I have no clue but the following extract from
    docset
    ------[Extract from solaris 8 documentation]-----
    The /var/run File System
    A new TMPFS-mounted file system, /var/run, is the
    repository for temporary system files that are not
    needed across system reboots in this Solaris release
    and future releases. The /tmp directory continues to
    be repository for non-system temporary files.
    Because /var/run is mounted as a memory-based file
    system rather than a disk-based file system, updates
    to this directory do not cause unnecessary disk
    traffic that would interfere with systems running
    power management software.
    The /var/run directory requires no administration.
    You may notice that it is not unmounted with the
    umount -a or the umountall command.
    For security reasons, /var/run is owned by root.
